what we're discovering about a rollover that went up in flames. >> incredible video there. also, airport shooting rampage. police are now uncovering about the suspected gunman who opened fire at a baggage claim. folks, on this saturday morning january the 7th, a busy morning. a lot going on here at news4. we're going to bring that all to you. but first we've got to start with the weather outside. >> good morning, everyone. angie goff here with david culver. a lot of our team members joining us on this saturday morning. the snow is here and storm team 4 is working for you. we are tracking the latest road conditions as well. >> as you look at the screen, you see derrick ward in virginia. megan fitzgerald on the roads. but we begin with meteorologist tom kierein. >> it's a close call. we're coming close to a heavy snow event here in the metro area. the heaviest snow 30 to 40 miles south and east of us. any change in the tra

but for us, it's going to be just some light snow. live look from the tower camera looking into northwest washington. tiny flakes are coming down. it looks like fog. that's actually snow as our live tower camera is looking over toward roslin. the heavier snow, this area in the bright white is falling in st. mary's county and bands of those snows coming down in the northern neck of virginia. getting into some light snow in the gray zone across northern virginia, maryland, and the district right now with more likely on the way honeybover th few hours. >> we have team coverage for you this morning on this winter weather. it will depend on where you are to how much snow you're going to see. >> we're already seeing that across social media. megan fitzgerald is live with our drive cam this morning on her way to st. mary's county in maryland. how are the roads looking so far

>> reporter: good morning, angie and david. yes, road conditions right now pretty treacherous. the further south we go, the worse the conditions are looking. want to show you a live look of what we're seeing. you can see the snow continues to come down steadily sticking to the roadways. making for some slick conditions. we know officials in st. mary's town tells us they have been treating the roadways. but they're asking folks to stay inside. you can see why. very slish roads. we're seeing the snow packing to the roadways right now. we've seen some crews out here salting the roads. but it's certainly slow going. as i mentioned, the further south we go, the worse the roads are getting. the folks in st. mary's are looking to see up to 5 inches of snow this afternoon. so they are encouraging people to stay inside. we're making a u-turn here now. we did see some emergency crews

look of what we just saw. not quite sure what's happening up here. if it was some sort of an accident or something. we're going back to check it out right now just to get a better idea. but as you can see for yourself out here, slick conditions on the roadways. so angie and david, the best thing to do is just to tune into news4. we are monitoring the roadways for you so you do not have to get out here. >> all right. stay safe out there. thanks so much. >> parts of virginia also going to be hit by the snow. actually feeling it already. could make for a mess on the roads this morning. >> seeing a good amount of flakes out there, derrick ward. we continue with derrick who joins us live from centerville. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well, v.d.o.t. is asking everyone to stay off the roads. they do have some plows out. i want you to look at the surfaces. this is an untreated surface. this is here in centerville. what you get is a little over an inch. then beyond, that's

west toward manassas. and you can see the surfaces have been treated. cars are moving at speed. it's smart to treat it like a rain incident. we have seen several plows out on the roads. no problems with accidents between here and the district headed toward manassas on 66. it's expected to get a little heavier later. you do need to know that fairfax county schools have canceled all official school events that have been happening before 2:00 today. there could be some later on as this incident continues. but roads are passable here. 66. definitely want to drive with some cautious. at least the space between you and in front of you. v.d.o.t. says you don't have to come out if you don't have to. >> all right, derrick. thanks. preparing for this blast of winterweather in d.c. the city's snow team is already out. already deployed.

this is the day you want have that storm team 4 washington app at your hands. just download it now on the app store. we will be pushing out that will help you along the way. >> we want to move to other headlines this morning. this is in the district we're headed to now. police there trying to figure out how a fiery rollover crash happened in northeast. d.c. fire and ems were called to put out the flames. that's what you're looking alt-right there. happened before 4:00 this morning. two people killed. another person taken to the hospital with critical burns. new developments out of ft. lauderdale right now. started shooting inside. five people died and eight others were hurt when the suspect fired off shots near a baggage claim area. pete williams tells us new details about the suspect who is now in custody.

>> reporter: esteban santiago was complaining he was hearing voices. they say a few months ago he walked into the fbi's office in anchorage complaining the cia was trying to get him to fight isis. his a aunt and uncle in new jersey near where santiago was born, say they believe he developed problems after a military deployment overseas. he was on duty as a combat engineer for ten months in iraq. returning five years ago. he was discharged last august. family members say he went to alaska looking for work where he had a son and is receiving counseling there.

a bizarre string of crime in prince georges county. you're seeing crooking smashing into a gas station to steal what's on the ground there, it says it, atm. put it in the back of the u-haul. prince georges county police say after leaving this scene, the crime was repeated at another gas station just a few miles away. at least six gas stations in the county have been hit like this over the past two weeks. police believing that the cases might be connected. one of last year's most popular christmas gifts now being blamed for a house fire in d.c. authorities tell us that a kid was charging his hoverboard when it caught fire and it burned this duplex last night. three people made it out safely. we're told the hoverboard was a christmas gift.

dunkin'. happening today, family and friends will gather to say good-bye to charlotte zaremba. she was the 16-year-old kill bid another teenager on new year's day. charlotte's mother was hurt in that incident. the suspect shot himself and died the next day. charlotte's funeral is in howard county and the viewing is in less than an hour. funeral at noon. funeral services being held for a prince georges county man killed last month. rayshand cotton was killed just before the christmas holiday. two teenagers were arrested and charged with his murder. cotton's service starts at 10:00 this morning. today we could learn the names of two people involved in a double shooting. we know one woman died and ama

police are calling a domestic incident. this happened on oakwood drive. you're looking at the scene right there. it happened just before 3:30 yesterday afternoon. neighbors telling news4 that the couple's 13-year-old daughter called 911. one neighbor says the father's behavior seemed odd at times. >> he didn't want to socialize with us. if we -- he mainly kept his children -- if they tried to play with a friend, the other one would tell on them for playing. you know, he was controlling. >> neighbors go on to say that the couple also has a young son. police say there was no threat to the public. it's gone through my family and perhaps yours. a lot of folks talking about it this morning. the flu season well underway. according to the cdc, every state is reporting outbreaks and they look worse than last year. flu is most widespread in the northwest and the parts of the northeast and mid-atlantic. obviously including us. flu usuallyi

and the very old. depending on the season, it kills anywhere between 4,000 and 50,000 people a year in the u.s. >> wow. okay. so some people, they're going to see the first real snow of the year, right? in our area? >> yeah. especially those who live in the southern suburbs, prince georges, st. mary's. already you've had up to 3 inches there with more to come. here in the immediate metro area, not a lot going on yet. we just have some teeny tiny flakes coming down. we'll have updates on nbc4, nbcwashington.com and in the nbc washington app. right now tomorrow team 4 radar showing light snow falling. just some light snow from manassas through fairfax. and right into washington, clinton over to bowie.

that stretches into st. mary's county. all of this advancing to the north and east. the heaviest snows right now are virginia tide water from parts of the northern neck and lower eastern shore. then it's mixing a little bit of sleep now around norfolk as mild air is trying to come in. we're not quite done with the bands yet. these bands will likely make their way up into the metro area here in another couple of hours. now, the heavier snows here in eastern north carolina and southeast to virginia, that is the zone that is going to get hammered with as much as 10 inches of snow. here's some of the photos we've seen so far this morning. st. mary's county. wrenn posted that on my twitter page. about 3 inches there so far. and maybe have added another inch since that was posted about an hour ago. this also st. mary's county. toni sent that in about an hour or so ago. an inch has fallen on

that. hour-by-hour into the latter part of the morning, another band coming in from the south and west coming through here. then it moves off to the east. all of the snow ends in the metro area around 3:00 this afternoon as southern maryland. it's still snowing. but after around 5:00 in the afternoon, that's when that snow will taper off and move away and will clear out tonight with a gusty wind. we'll have windchills near zero. we have this winter weather advisory. purple zone here. metro area, the winter storm warning in pink farther south and east. that's where certainly a lot higher amount of snow is going to be falling. just a dusting to maybe a couple of inches, our far southern suburbs. and 1 to 3 inches along the 95 corridor. and farther north and west. hardly any at all. just a bit of a light coding in montgomery. and just about an inch in our nearby suburbs south and east of the metro area. temperatures right now only hovering ne

protect some historic treasures hidden in the potomac river. public comments will be taken about plans to create a national marine sanctuary in maryland. the sanctuary would stretch 52 square miles along the potomac river tidal area. there are more than 100 ship wrecks in that region including vessels used during world war i. fascinating. this is also fascinating here. imagine this. an iceberg the size of delaware. it exists and it's getting ready to break away in antarctica. >> wow. and this could actually, they say, lead to a collapse of a massive ice shelf on that continent. take a look. we have some video. a long-existing crack in that rice shelf known as larson sea suddenly crew by 11 miles in december alone. now the iceberg is only attached by a thin thread of ice about 12 miles long. scientists have been keeping an eye on the

a busy morning here on this saturday, january 7th. we welcome you back into news4 today. i'm david culver. >> and i'm angie goff. we have this weather alert day covering from beginning to the end. looks like tom kierein went outside to see it first hand. >> let's see how it looks out there. coming down. >> it really is. in fact, the flakes are getting a little bit bigger. we have a light coating here on the sidewalks and any untreated surface so watch your footing as you're heading out the door this morning. it's a weather alert day and that snow advancing from the southwest to northeast. you can see the brighter bands there in the white colors. that's where it's coming down harder in southern maryland, southeastern virginia. there are some bands around roanoke. those are getting closer to us by later this morning. we could get up to an

the metro area. a look at totals elsewhere and the timing coming up in a few minutes. >> all right. new this morning, that snow and sleet making for dangerous driving conditions in the south. take a look at this video here. states of emergency are in place from alabama all the way north to north carolina as millions brace for the winter storm. this is what it looks like in georgia where sleet and snow are falling. several car crashes have been reported just outside of atlanta. and this dangerous storm hitting spots like norfolk, virginia, right along virginia's coast. >> that's right. and that area is expected to be dumped up by about 10 inches of snow. >> that's a lot for them there. tammy lightner joins us with a look at what drivers are dealing with there. wow. and the wind's blowing heavily there. -- >> yeah. you know, this is just historic. we don't get weather like this in the

people. as you look over here, they've been out plowing since very early this morning. keep in mind, this is a small town. we spoke with the emergency manager. one of the big concerns they have out here is that they're not going to get the roads plowed or all of them for quite a while. another concern, keep in mind this area was hit by hurricane matthew. they're very concerned with the snow coming down. that these branches could fall down which is extremely dangerous. this blizzard warning is in effect until about 10:00 tonight. back to you guys. >> all right, and no doubt that will be crippling for the hampton roads area. hopefully can get warm soon as well. a $30 toll to go about 15 miles an hour. well, we've learned transurban plans to work with those customers who were impacted by an express lane slowdown. some drivers may get their money back and we're finding out what caused toll prices to jump.

lane built to keep you moving. so what happens when v.d.o.t. plow trucks slow you down? >> this is the first time i've heard in the history of the 495 express lane saw two plow trucks slowing everything down as they tried to treat the lines. >> reporter: transurban manages the express lanes. he said the tolls started climbing as traffic lined up behind the plows. >> the more people on the express lane, the tolls are going to increase to manage that traffic on the lane. >> reporter: would you ever pay that to go on there? >> never. i never that much. i never pay that much. >> reporter: drivers we caught up with, surprise. ed by the spike. have you ever taken the express lane? >> take them all the time. >> reporter: louise kanter filling up for about $35 today. can't imagine that for a one-way toll. >> i've never seen it that way. >> reporter: v.d.o.t. tells me the timing was unfortunate.

happening today, a ribbon cutting for a new transitional housing that is soon to open in the district. the transitional home is on 19th street in northeast. it's going to operate under a grant from the d.c. department of human services and offer services for lbgt youth between ages 18 and 24. the mayor will be at the ceremony. it's official. donald trump is the next president of the united states. congress tallied the electoral college votes yesterday. as you could imagine, democrats did not sink quietly as the tally was read. >> even with the -- >> there is no debate in order. >> no senator signed onto the objections by democrats. that meant it could not officially be heard. the 304 electoral votes

it's a no brainer. right now we have some light snow in the immediate metro area. but that snow is advancing from the southwest heading towards the northeast. and it's going to be with us here off and on into early afternoon. i've got new timing, new totals coming up in just a couple of minutes. we do have team coverage for you this morning on this winter weather. it's causing some treacherous road conditions outside there this morning. >> and news4's meagan fitzgerald is live with the drive cam on the way to st. mary's county. what type of accidents are you seeing this morning? >> reporter: guys, i can tell you just driving along south here in charles county and where we are in st. mary's county. we have seen several vehicles

roadway. we passed one a couple of minutes ago where a vehicle just lost control. police are there trying to assist that person. we know that these roads have been treated. we know that snowplows are out here. we've seen them. as you can see from the road conditions here, it's certainly just not enough. the snow continues to pack the road making it very slippery. this was near meadowland lane on 5 south in charles county. this vehicle drove off the side of the road smacking into a pole. sheriff's deputies tell us they had to cut the driver and his 8-year-old son out of the vehicle. of course they were then transported to the hospital. but it's a reminder of how dangerous these roadways are, how slippery they are, no matter how slow you're going. so officials in the area are asking foks to stay off the roads if possible while crews are out here trying to clear them and

because as we see as we drive here, road conditions are very dangerous. back to you. >> thank you, meagan. we want to head to the commonwealt virginia state police warning drivers to take it easy. if you don't have to be out on the roads, stay off them this morning. >> we want to continue our conch with derrick ward who joins us live where the flakes continue to fall. derrick? >> reporter: good morning again. well, it's not coming down as heavily as it first was in this snowstorm. take a look again. here is an untreated surface. maybe about -- maybe an inch, inch and a half of snow. but if you look beyond down 66, you can see that there is clear pavement on the traveled roadways. we've seen no shortage of plows out here today. i'd say at least half a dozen, maybe more since we've been here at this rest stop in virginia. now, a lot of folks are out. v.d.o.t. is asking folks to stay of

you can take a look at the plows we've seen on the road out along 66. that does offer a level of reassurance to drivers. don't get too sure. they can still be a problem. we talked to one truck driver who said that, you know, he's been around and he's seen a lot of trouble on the roads and other places. not here, not so bad. but he does have a warning to folks that were out here. take a listen. >> just be careful. be safe. you know, get home alive. there's no rush, really. i mean, i've been through the entire united states and it can get pretty bad. i've seen some pretty bad accidents. so just be careful. make it home to your families. >> reporter: good advice any time of the year but especially now with the roads like they are now. take a look at this traffic. you can see it picking up some. people are behind some of these plows. so if you're noticing the traffic bunching up, it's not going to hurt. ha

kierein. tom, as far as folks heading out, what are you anticipating timing here? >> good advice, want to get around, metro is a good call. any untreated surface, the snow is sticking. take a look now at storm team 4 radar. showing the snow falling lightly in the metro area. coming down a little bit harder farther south and east. that snow advancing to the north and west. you see the areas in the dark, it's not hard. the bright white, that's coming down harder. that's in southeastern virginia as well as this band here that's coming out in the western north carolina and southwestern virginia. this band is going to come on through. if you haven't had much snow yet, that's going to be adding generally the totals i'm expecting. and as we look at the slick side streets here, this is in sterling, virginia. post your pictures on twitter and instagram. st. mary's county, lexington park there. they've had several inches now. we'll continue to see the snow falling. drifting away quickly by late
