it is cold. >> you heard tom. don't go outside unless you really are prepared. derek ward with that hat, you are very prepared. you're there in dupont circle at the farmer's market. what is everyone saying? >> reporter: well, you know what, it is pretty cold out here. there's no doubt about that. that's what people are saying. take a look at the clock. it's not often you see it in the digits below 20 degrees. 14 degrees is what that's reading. we're used to transposing those numbers. it's over on the other side of the circle they have their sunday farmer's market. we got there just as folks were setting up. they're making amends for this cold. they have a lot of propane. that's the key. propane heaters set up to keep themselves and some of the produce warm. you know, they say that they're going to be out here. this is important to the farmers who were there. they come whether it's rain, shine, or cold. take a listen. >> all these farmers have come in from surrounding states

way up to the attic in the house overnight. still not clear how it all started. d.c. fire and ems says no one was hurt. and there were really slick roads out there. heavy snow in southern maryland reported. situations like this as a result. take a look. it caused multiple car crashes in charles county yesterday. in one of them, a man driving with his 8-year-old son, he slid off the road. they rammed into a pole. crews had to come and cut them free out of their car. we're hearing both are supposed to be okay. good news. and there's a lot to clean up in the commonwealth. it was pretty much an endless shower of snow with dangerous conditions. virginia state police said they responded to more than 500 crashes yesterday. now, this morning vdot crews are out there again treating the roads. mean while, it was especially bad in the hampton roads area. cars stuck, more crashes there too. virginia and north carolina were both under a state of emergency. if you're driving, please make sure you bring at least the snow scraper, maybe a shovel, fls,

in handy if you get yourself in an emergency. and this morning we now know the name of a man who was killed in a crash in prince georges county. ibrahim sow lived in bowie. he was 29 years old. maryland state police found him in his car, which was overturned in an icy pond yesterday. this was near the ramp from route 50 to collington road. we want to make sure you stay safe out there. before you leave the house, always check the latest forecast any time on the nbc washington app. new at 9:00, breaking news in jerusalem. someone drove a truck into a crowd in jerusalem. we're told four people were killed, at least 13 others hurt. this is new video here. you can see the huge security response. a witness said the attack was against israeli soldiers who were getting off a bus. it is not clear if any civilians were hurt. the driver of the truck was shot and killed. as we learn more, we're going to let you know where the details are and you'll have it here in the nbc wain

story, the united states is now seeking the death penalty in the ft. lauderdale airport shooting. the suspect was previously known to law enforcement, as nbc's sara rosario reports. that information is raising questions about whether this deadly attack could have been prevented. >> reporter: complete pandemonium friday at the ft. lauderdale international airport. a heinous shooting from a mentally ill person or an act of terror? >> we have not identified any triggers that would have caused this attack. >> reporter: police say esteban santiago flew from anchorage, alaska, to ft. lauderdale specifically to carry out the attack. >> there have been concerns raised about where mr. santiago was not placed on a no-fly list. i want to be clear. during our initial investigation, we found no ties to terrorism. >> reporter: in november, he walked into an anchorage fbi office saying the government was recruiting him to isis. >> although he stated he did not wish to harm anyone, as a result of his erratic behavior, our

take a look at this. right now crews are working to clear away black ice at the raleigh-durham airport in north carolina. that state was slammed by the snowstorm that we've all been dealing with. southwest airlines canceled all operations there today, and on top of that, more than a dozen other flights were canceled this morning. the airport says arriving flights should be coming in on time. no pants, no problem. it is a revealing tradition that's continuing today in d.c. >> yeah, we are live on facebook right now. they're loving this one. for nearly ten years, a group of people have met up to ride on metro without their pants. they strip down to their undies, keep their shoes on. every year the group seems to get a little larger. at least she had stockings on. that's smart. >> are they warm? >> i don't know, they were fish nets. but ty'

three tractor trailers, a tanker truck, more than a dozen cars here involved in a crash in connecticut. amazingly, through all of this, no one was seriously hurt. that's just one of the scenes playing out from a massive winter storm that's having an affect all across the country. we see the storm's impact across the southeast, including norfolk, virginia. >> reporter: wicked winter weather causing this pileup in middletown, connecticut. 20 cars, tractor trailers, and a tanker truck dumping fuel on the interstate. unbelievably, no one seriously hurt. snow blanketing airports from new york to raleigh to atlanta. thousands of flights canceled or delayed. weary travelers trapped. this relentless storm unleashing snow and ice across the south. in georgia, accidents on icy roads bringing traffic on the interstates to a stop. >> we were sat two hours on 75, standstill, didn't move. >> reporter: south carolina hit with five inches overnight.

take a look at this surveillance video. it shows a man wearing a t-shirt, standing near a security gate. as the car of the official pulled up, the man pulls out a gun and shoots the official through the windshield. authorities say the unidentified official is in stable condition. this morning support is still pouring in for a mentally disabled teenager whose brutal beating was broadcast on facebook live. a go fund me campaign had a goal of $10,000. we checked it, and we found out that it raised more than $116,000 as of this morning. police in chicago say that four people tortured that victim and taunted him with profanities against white people and president-elect donald trump. the suspects face charges, 2fjmr including kidnapping and hate crimes. time right now is 9:41. you're going to want your hats, your gloves, your heavy winter coat, and double it up. tom is

the windchill in southern maryland, where they got all that snow yesterday, is 2 below zero. fluffy, dry snow. a lot of the wind is blowing it around. there actually may be drifting of that snow here today because of gusty winds in southern maryland. our temperatures right now are in the teens. reagan national now is at 18 degrees. going forward, our windchills through late morning will still be in the single digits. then by 2:00, windchills still pretty cold. right around 10 degrees for the windchills much of the afternoon. then by sunset, the windchills will start to be a little more tolerable as we'll have the winds diminishing. storm team 4 radar scanning the sky. we have no snow anywhere in the vicinity. all clear now. won't get any snow here today. as we look here over the next ten days, quite a change on the way. tomorrow, though, still another cold day. we'll be in the low 30s. then up near 40 degrees on tuesday afternoon. a lot of clouds around. then maybe making it into the mid-50s on
