i love the auto show. this year the talk isn't as much about engines and sleek lines. it's about politics. >> reporter: it is. good morning matt and meredith. i don't want to say i didn't draw the short straw being at the auto show but i get a bit of an eye roll when i talk to the executives. i want to talk about donald trump and the pressure he's putting on them to keep manufacturing in the united states. what i'm finding is virtually no one wants to get into a fight with the president-elect. so ford, after making announcements last week about investing money in michigan announced it's bringing back the ford ranger the mid sized truck. it's bringing back the bronco. it hasn't made that since 1996. chrysler bringing back the jeep grand wagoner. it had beautiful wood panelling along the sides. everybody said they made the decisions without donald trump. before donald trump. i spoke to the michigan

stabenow said these are long leads. >> i'm talking about the big self-driving cars. they're on display. when will they be on the road? >> reporter: yeah. probably we'll see them on this floor by 2019 or 2020. in the car dealerships by 2020 or 2021. we're in the first stage of autonomy. cars can park themselves. they can avoid collisions and leaving the lane. a stage four autonomous car can drive in a busy congested city and without a steering wheel and without brakes. there could be a driver in it but they don't have to do anything. everybody is talking about this. that seems to be a reality that'll be upon us within three to four years. the issue is regulation and how much insurance it'll cost to have one. the car manufacturers say one thing, meredith. they say cars driven by computers will have fewer accidents than cars driven

"today" live to 100 series. a big wild card in the equation health care expenses. according to fie telldell -- fidelity. it doesn't include long-term care. something 7 in 10 people are likely to need in their lifetime. so how do you plan and pay for it? ge lifetime. how do you plan and pay for it? jean chatzky, good morning. >> good morning. >> last week, we did a segment on retirement. the last tip you had was stay healthy. now we know why. >> that's right. long-term care can cost you anywhere from about $44,000 to $96,000 a year, depending on what kind of care you need. you need a plan to pay for that. >> let's talk about the plans. there's traditional, long-term care, insurance. who is this good for? >> this is good for people who have more than $500,000 in

in assets. >> that's a lot. >> and that's not including your house, by the way. and the reason for this, and it's true of all long-term care policies we're going to talk about today, if you have less than $500,000 in assets, you're going to spend down. and you're going to, at least the way things stand right now, qualify for medicaid, which will step in and help pick up the slack. if you don't spend down your assets, you need to cover it yourself. traditional long-term care insurance, covers care when you need it. >> but -- >> not cheap. >> a policy for a 60-year-old couple, looks like it's going to cost about $2,000 a year. and it's limited. it's not going to pay for every single year you need care. it will cap out about three. >> that's one option. there's something else a hybrid plan. who is this good for? >> the same people, over $500,000 in assets, but you pay for it in a different way because it leaves something to your

the things that people don't like about long-term care is you pay thousands of dollars a year, if you don't use it, the money is sunk. it's like traditional insurance. you can use the benefit to pay for your care. you dip into the death benefit. if you don't use it, it's there for your heirs. but it's a more heavy up front cost. >> i can see people trying to remember what you said about long-term care. put them side-by-side and see how they stack up. >> right. with the traditional policy, like i said, you have a premium a couple thousand dollar a year, to start. with the hybrids, we're looking at $10,000. but you'll only pay the premiums over ten years. or you can pay it at once. the use it or lose it is the downside of the traditional policy. here, if you have unused money, it can go to your heirs. and there's a death benefit with the hybrid policy as long as you don't eat it up.

retirement years. when do you start shopping for this? >> you want to start about age 50. and ramp up your shopping quickly. by age 60, chronic conditions start to set in. and that's when the insurance either say, it's going to cost you more money or we're not going to cover you at all. you want an a-rated insurance. you want to shop around. >> you mentioned earlier, some of the options were for people with $500,000 in options and above. a lot of people haven't been that fortunate. haven't been able to save that kind of money. what do you say for them? >> first of all, you got to look at medicaid and what you do to qualify for that. longevity insurance. you put money away to buy yourself a paycheck at age 65. if you have a paid off mortgage, you can look at a reverse mortgage. complicated. we should do a segment on them. it's an option. you can pay for care yourself. or what most people do is rely on friends and familybe
