remain on the scene as others are in the hospital. here's what we know. >> fire officials say six young children are now presumed dead, the youngest 9 months old, the oldest just 11 years old. three others have been rushed to the hospital. just a short time ago, one of them was released. the children's mother also in the hospital this afternoon. >> reporter: first let me tell you we've just now been able to get a closer look at the scene. all day long fire investigators have kept us away from the house why they go through the very difficult process of recovering those bodies. like you said, six children were initially unaccounted for inside that house. just a few minutes ago, fire investigators briefed us, letting us know they found the sixth and final body

recovery operation. that child was just 9 months old. now, this fire was being described as nothing short of an inferno. the mom, katie malone was with her nine children. her 8-year-old daughter had to rescue her two little brothers. but the rest of the kids were trapped in that house. no one could get to them. the boys and the mom remain in critical condition at the hospital. the father of the children was at work at the time. investigators have not begun to try to figure out the cause of the fire, but they're looking at the possibility of a space heater being involved. >> the home itself was fully engulfed in flames. they immediately went into a blitz attack, trying to extinguish the fire to make an entrance, but it was just overwhelming at that time. the fire got so far ahead of

it made it very difficult to ooer even get inside. >> reporter: you can see investigators remain here. the street is closed off. they're expected to go in and start digging through this debris to try to figure out what caused this fire. a little bit earlier today we were able to speak to a man who lives across the street. he saw the flames, he heard the children screaming for help. he describes what he did to try to rescue some of these children. >> how awful. thank you very much. first at 4:00, the justice department's watchdog will investigate how the fbi and d.o.j. handled the investigation into hillary clinton's private server. >> the probe will include a review of fbi director's news conference in july and his letters to lawmakers in october.

senate confirmation hearings are still going on on the hill. they have been grilling mike m pompeo. he called russia's hacking an aggressive action. the senate armed services committee overwhelmingly passed legislation allowing james mattis to run the pentagon. service members normally have to be out of uniform for seven years after serving as defense secretary. a local teenager will have to stay behind bars after being accused in a deadly double stabbing at whaeeaton mall. >> reporter: the young man is charged with two counts of first degree murder. he maintains his innocence but the judge said given the nature of these

the suspect is a student at richard montgomery high school. 17-year-old angela lamont jackson was arrested yesterday at his home. police were called to the mall tuesday afternoon and found two hispanic males fatally wounded. the suspect, jackson, got into a fight with a group of young men who were using broken bamboo sticks from a planter in the lower level of the mall. police say the suspect left and returned with a knife, stabbing two of the men. >> angelo lamont jackson stabbed the two young men and they later succumbed to their injuries. it's a very very serious crime that carries a life penalty. >> reporter: his mother tells us his side of the story. that's cg

members of a church now looking for a new place to worship after a fire destroyed their building this afternoon. you can see flames shooting out of the windows. the blaze quickly spread to the rest of the church. >> reporter: pat, we're at mt. olive church where the fire broke out earlier this afternoon. we've got some video of what those flames looked like. this came from the prince george's county fire department. i'm told the fire started in the basement and then spread to the first floor. no word yet on what caused the fire. the building was empty at the time, so no one was injured. i spoke to the pastor of almost 30 years here. he told me this church is his life. >> i don't even know. i'm surprised and hurt. but in all things, we have to give god th

metro leaders just announced a new round of safe track work. adam tuss has details. >> reporter: another busy day here at metro headquarters. this is the first board meeting of 2017. metro is in heavy planning for the inauguration. five stations are going to be shut down for next friday's inauguration. you should know what they are. pentagon, mt. vernon, smithsonian, federal triangle and archives. they're also going to have rush hour fares in effect for most of the day. secondly, safe track, we knew new safe track dates were going to be announced and today they were announced. the bluene

the u.s. called in air support and wound up killing 33 civilians in the air raids. four u.s. soldiers and 11 commandos were also wounded inning that fight. tsa says thousands of guns were found in bags at airport last year and most of the guns were loaded. the agency released sobering statistics today. the agency says 3300 guns were discovered in carry-on bags last year. four out of five of them were loaded. that's a 30% increase from 2015. it also discovered concealed knives. paul ryan says lawmakers will move quickly to repeal and replace the affordable care act. on wednesday president-elect trump said he expects to see nearly simultaneous plans to repeal and

we're talking about a dusting to around two inches of snow and sleet mainly during the morning hours, transitioning to freezing rain during the midday and afternoon hours. maybe a glaze of ice out there. the mountains really seeing the biggest concern for freezing rain. that include fauquier, cullpepper, shenandoah county and parts of the panhandle of west virginia. southern maryland, down around fredericksburg and the northern neck, mainly spotty freezing rain changing over to plain rain. take a look at the numbers because it's going down from here. 34 on saturday, 42 on sunday. maybe some rain around during the early morning hours. maybe some more showers around on martin luther king, jr. day and a high temperature of 40 degrees. vice president biden right now being honored at the white house. this is a

rebecca cooper is here to try to help us understand why this could be such a controversy. >> yes. there are a number of conflict of interest issues that were brought up regarding the hotel. the most recent one is emolumen, the it basically means benefit or comfort. the idea is that payments that foreign dignitaries staying in trump's hotels are making to that hotel are the benefit for the president. mr. trump and his attorneys don't think that it constitutes an emolument. whether or not this constitutes a benefit that the constitution says the president should not be recin

>> what is he doing to try to maybe get out ahead of this before it starts to become a bigger issue? >> we already know certain delegations here in washington have started throwing parties there and everything. yesterday mr. trump's attorney announced that he was going to donate all of his profits from these foreign government payments to the hotel, back to the u.s. treasury. so any payment for a party, any payment for a hotel room that comes from a foreign government, the profit margin of that amount is going to be donated back to the u.s. treasury. >> in light of that, i understand the trump organization leases the trump international here in d.c. so for that hotel and others like it, won't giving the money to the government cut into the revenue? >> sure. so the hotel -- you know, the trump organization won the right to develop its hotel based on certain financial calculatio

profits would be. they decided how much money they would spend to renovate it based on those calalculations. when you start to remove some of the profit, you're changing the bottom line. the hotel industry experts are certainly more optimistic about the future of the hotel under a trump presidency than they were under a clinton presidency. but it does still remain to be seen, at any time the trump organization could try to renegotiate that contract with the federal government if it's not looking in practice like it had on paper earlier. >> something tells me you're going to have a very busy four years coming up. thank you very much. >> thank you. new today in northern virginia, a burglary ring hitting nine homes in fairfax county while the residents were on vacation. police arrested two men. two juveniles are also accused in the crime. the group hit homes in the fair oaks district in late december.

there will be more charlote buses coming to d.c. for the women's march than for the inauguration. today we learned more about how the city is going to handle the crowds and any emergencies. >> mark is at the inauguration desk with the latest developments. >> four times as many tour bus permits have been issued for saturday than for friday. that was just one of the new details we learned today from the head of d.c.'s homeland security and emergency management agency. we also learned a major request that district officials made to the federal government concerning the safety of the women's march was denied. under oath the man in charge of the district's homeland security told a d.c. council hearing, he asked the u.s. secret service and the u.s. department of homeland security to include saturday's women's march as part of the inaugural events, meaning added security and funding would be provided by the federal

but the request was rejected. >> this may not be an official sanctioned event by the presidential committee but it's an event that's happening because of the inauguration. >> the district will use local police and national guard to patrol the women's march. the cost will likely be covered by another federal grant. as for the number of tour buses coming to d.c. and what that means for crowd sizes, as of today there have been 390 permits issued for the day of the inauguration and more than 1200 issued for buses the day of the women's march. that's not the only indicator of crowd size. >> i can't tell you which is going to be more or less people or how many people from the 20th are going to stick around for the 21st. >> the private ambulance company that already transported noncritical patients is being paid $160,000 to provide

disp dispatchers. >> we've done a request to our surrounding states to have an additional 150 ambulances on a four-hour standby. so if something catastrophic happened, we have the ability to surge additional support in. >> now federal officials are always reluctant to estimate the size of crowds before or after these big events. but the district is preparing for as many as 800,000 to 900,000 on friday and as many as 500,000 or more people on saturday. as for permits for saturday's march, they estimated about 200,000 people. one big factor will be the weather. while we know there will be a lot of police watching the protesters and

watching the police. it's time to make plans for the inauguration, especially if you live in the district. what are your plans? you leaving town or staying in town and not going? most people say they're not going anywhere. they're going to stay in town but they will not attend the inauguration. the day after the inauguration, the grounds of the national mall could become a sea of pink. many attending the women's march on washington will be seeing and wearing these pink knit hats. it's a project organized by a group of women encouraging those who knit but can't go to the march to whip out their yarn and needles to make hats for the women who will be

the hats are flooding this distribution center in reston, virginia, coming from all over the world. >> we had denmark, belgium, japan, australia, canada, france. it gives you a purpose because there are people out there that have voices to be heard and this is their way of being heard for the very first time. >> now, the goal is to distribute more than a million of those pink knit hats for women who wear during the march. so whip out your needles and your yarn. could be pretty chilly that day so the hats could come in handy. they may need some waterproof hats because as we get towards the end of the workweek next week, we've got some rain. we've got pretty unsettled weather. it was beautiful out there today. it was very warm. we had records at dulles. i think we're about to have a

d.c., we didn't get to a record. that was set back in 1890 of 76. it is just a very nice evening. if you didn't get a chance to go out today, it's going to be fine throughout the evening. at 11:00, still in the upper 50s. now, could have a few isolated light showers later on tonight. i would say really after about 10:00 and throughout the overnight. this is all with this frontal system. unfortunately this frontal system is going to put an end to this very warm weather we have. it's going to scoot through the area tonight without much fanfare, but maybe bring a few showers. you can see all the cold air right behind this front. st. louis at 33, chicago at 25.

temperature in the 50s. that's most likely going to be overnight tonight. temperatures gradually falling tomorrow. in fact, we end up in the 30s by late tomorrow night. tonight just fine. enjoy it. friday we're going to be dealing with falling temperatures but still dry. and saturday temperatures staying right around 30 degrees. in fact, we could have that wintery mix. we could even have some spotty freezing rain as we get into sunday. once that front goes through, it's going to stall to the south. it's going to pull some old air in. since we're already cooling down, a dusting to about 2 inches of snow expected for us and areas north. just to the south through prince george's county and charles county, southern maryland and the northern neck, a little ice, but mainly rain in that area. out towards the blue ridge, we're talking about a

like a freezing rain event. if a lot of people are headed out skiing, doesn't look like the best conditions on the slope as it is going to be a little ice mess. not only on saturday, but we could have freezing rain on sunday and also into monday, martin luther king, jr. day. again, temperatures are going to be around 40. of course, saturday is a weather alert day. we're going to keep you updated on that. but most likely moving in during the morning time and continues throughout the day. amounts are light, but enough to cause problems. dry on tuesday. look how temperatures go up through next week. it is a favorite in america and even bigger hit in italy and it's a legend in pat's pantry. but there are concerns that an ingredient in nutella could cause cancer.

that family slept, trapping ten of them inside. >> i heard the kids crying. my daughter heard them. they said, help, help! couldn't save them. couldn't save them. >> two children and their mother remain in the hospital this afternoon. a third child has been released. let's get to darcy spencer. >> reporter: this is a difficult story for everyone involved, from the fire investigators to of course the family, to neighbors, and even those of us here covering this with the loss of six children. this is the house here. you can see the charred out debris left behind. investigators spent the entire day today with that very difficult process of locating the six children who died inside that home. now their focus, finding the cause of the fire. they are looking at the possibility of a space heater being involved.
