we'll take you live to the georgetown waterfront. first we talk with lester holt about his one on one with president obama. news4 at 4:00 starts now. it's a busy afternoon here. we are learning new information about a shooting at a local high school. first, we're in weather alert mode. before you make plans this weekend, be sure to check our latest forecast. i tell you, even bigger than that, taking a look right now at the temperatures, because that's what's really key here. >> when you have these wintery mix type systems moving into the area, the temperatures are such a key role. that's what makes them so difficult at times. >> going from 32 to 33 degrees makes all the difference in the world on the

you notice just back to the west we are seeing some moisture starting to make its way in towards west virginia. here's the bulk of the moisture. you make a beeline come into the south of d.c., south and west of the area first. there is a winter weather advisory for just about the entire region. we're going to get a wintery mix here out of this. some snow, some sleet and even some freezing rain. look at the numbers here. the current temperature is 54 degrees. we're at 44 in hagerstown. even state college is at 36. that's all well above freezing. that's why we think this is going to be a light to moderate event. >> especially hearing how road crews are already out today pretreating the roads. thankfully the brine is out there. take a look at the roads tomorrow. so many people are asking what are travel conditions going to be like? we really

going to be fine. some slick spots on secondary roads. in the mountains, if you're going skiing, icy out that way. bridges and over passes are where you want to be the most cautious tomorrow. just a week before his inauguration, the president-elect went on another tweet storm this morning as nbc's edward lawrence reports. donald trump is sounding off on everything from russia to a new justice department review of the clinton e-mail case. >> fbi director james comey went to capitol hill for a classified talk about russian hacking. >> all i can tell you is the fbi director has no credibility. >> comey's focus, russian hacking to influence the election. but a new investigation will examine whether he tilted a close race by publicly commenting on hillary clinton's e-mails. demo

they wanted and have new questions about calls incoming national security advisor michael flynn made to russia's ambassador the same day sanctions were announced. >> we really need to have one president at a time. i certainly hope no one on the trump team was trying to under cut what president obama was doing. >> in a flurry of tweets, the president-elect says he will have his own people author a full report on hacking within 90 days. mr. trump also renewed his vow that obamacare will be repealed. the house today moved one step closer to gutting the affordable care act. >> we have to step in before things get worse. this is nothing short of a rescue mission. >> congress will now start hearings to write new healthcare laws so the president can sign

them in the first 100 days. the secretary of homeland security says special precautions will be taken so the swearing in ceremony won't be disrupted. this all comes as president obama gets ready to say farewell in just a week's time. >> lester holt spoke exclusively with the president in a interview for "dateline" tonight. barack obama started his campaign for the white house nine years ago on the basis of hope. as he comes to the end of his presidency, does he have any left? >> you know, he does. he says he has a lot of hope left. that was really the idea of this hour. we wanted an intimate conversation. i met him at andrews air force base on tuesday and flew to chicago with him and spoke to him ahead of his farewell speech. we kind of started the conversation about that moment in grant park in chicago, the

ago. he was talking about hope and the crowd was chanting back at him. the crowd was chanting, yes, we can. he says, yes, we did. and he will tick off a list of accomplishments and he says the country is in a better place today than when he took over. his amazingly optimistic. he admits he was shocked by the election of donald trump. he knows that some of his initiatives will be rolled back, but he feels that -- look, he says, i showed some things that were possible on the environment, on healthcare and some other things. to that extent, he feels good about what they accomplished. >> he mentioned that he hasn't done quite enough, didn't do enough to promote his own programs. did he talk about that? >> he did. he says, you know, i was busy with the office of the presidency. he says, i wish that maybe i could have spend more time kind of building up the grassroots that were a par

propelled donald trump to victory. i said, you know, were you personally wounded by the surprise results that donald trump was elected. he says, yes, he was. >> thank you so much. we can catch the entire dateline special the reality of hope tonight at 10:00. chopper 4 was on the scene in prince george's county this afternoon. a high school student is in the hospital right now after getting shot just steps from the school. this is video of the student arriving at that hospital after the shooting. doctors tell us he is expected to be okay. reportedly the shooting started after people got into a fight in an apartment near the school annex. one of those bullets reportedly hit the building. tracee wilkins is live in forestville talking to students. >> reporter: there are a lot of people here trying to figure out

this is the annex here right behind me. it's a building that is separate from the main building of the school, sits behind the school. this is the parking lot where the shooting happened. police tell us this is one of the areas where a bullet ricochetted off the back of this car. they collected at least five shell casings from this parking lot. one student shot. this all happened just after noon when there was a report of a student shot here. now, according to what we've been told by prince george's county police, a group of students left the school, came out into the parking lot, got into an argument. one student takes out a gun, shoots the other student. that student is then dragged back towards the school. also, in the midst of all of this there was one bullet that pierced a window of a music classroom at the annex. luckily no other students were injured.

making that announcement this afternoon and holding nothing back. in an indictment just unsealed today against three takata executives, it says they schemed to defraud their customers by manipulating testing of its air bags. takata new its air bag inflaters were exploding during testing but wanted to put profit over safety. >> we want them to know if they sell products designed to help consumers, they have to put safety ahead of profits. those who cheat will be held accountab accountable. >> takata's $1 billion settlement will be for restitution. another car manufacturer announces a recall of more than 500,000 vehicles

a spot on the georgetown waterfront, once again, a crime scene for the second time in one week. park police are investigating two separate armed robbery cases. david culver joins us to explain what happened there. >> reporter: i want to set the scene for you while it's still light outside. this is the capital crescent trail. a very popular area. you've got runners and joggers already out there. up here you've got the old aq aquaduct bridge. what's most striking about these armed robberies is that one of the suspects was using a machine gun. it's that perfect spot for a bike ride, a jog or just a midday stroll. the paved trail runs along the potomac. >> it connects to the trail. it's a commuter route. there's a lot of fun stuff to do

doing that. >> reporter: that feeling not likely to return until detectives find who's behind two bold robberies. >> one of the weapons was described as a machine gun and the other one is a handgun. >> reporter: the second incident, this past wednesday, middle of the afternoon, still light outside. this time, two suspects. >> it's two men, both armed again with a machine gun and a handgun. >> reporter: we did notice detectives were back out here today. they were focused in on the potomac boat club. not clear if those cameras actually caught anything. the investigation, still ongoing. just before noon, chopper 4 was over the scene of an accident whein burke where an s crashed into a building. there were folks inside the

came through. we're told there were several injuries. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. the slick weather headed our way could make driving a little tricky out there. earlier this afternoon chopper 4 spotted four maryland road crews spreading a salt solution along i-270. these pictures are from bethesda. the maryland department of transportation says it's pretreating roads and bridges before the winter storm expected tomorrow morning. however, officials are also urging you to drive and make smart decisions about your travel. stay off the roads when conditions are particularly snowy or icy. >> a lot of that just comes down to timing, listening to the forecast and knowing when it's going to go out. >> what's the timeline? >> this moves in overnight tonight. most likely in about the next 6-12 hours. maybe even after 11:00 tonight we start to see some moisture moving in across our region. right now we still have the

temperatures into the low 50s. 54 degrees still the current temperature there. 46 by 7:00. dropping into the 30s by around 11:00. that's still 38. hard to get frozen precip at 38 degrees. we have that winter weather advisory for everybody across our area, the exception fredericksburg and down towards extreme southern maryland. your temperatures should stay above freezing. you may see sleet, but not too many effects on the roads. we may start off with light snow and then transform over, but this is mainly a sleet event. the difference between sleet and freezing rain, sleet will bounce off of your car, bounce off the road. you will be able to get traction on the roadways. freezing rain is just a sheet of ice. you won't be able to get traction on that. sleet better than freezing rain. you folks

to deal with it a little bit longer. back to the west, starting to see the moisture moving our way. you can see a lot of rain back towards kentucky. look at parts of the west virginia. sleet and snow developing here. but with temperatures this warm, it's going to be really hard to have any problems on the roadways, at least during the early part of the storm. the cold air is not racing on in here even as the storm system is trying to do that. the clouds are here. by 11:00 tonight, notice here's our computer model with snow on the northern side. maybe just some rain showers down to the south. by 5:00 a.m. this is interesting, this has almost all snow d.c. to fredericksburg. i'm not really buying this. again, i think this is mostly a sleet event, maybe snow at the onset. that's why we have the winder weather advisory because i

snow, maybe some freezing rain for you folks back to the mountains. you see the warmer temperatures coming up. that's why it's just plain rain by late tomorrow afternoon. sleet to an ice/rain mix during the afternoon. mainly rain down to the south and a little bit of ice. this is the area back to the west where we could have the bulk of the ice, sleet, possibly into freezing rain. i want to show you tomorrow morning's temperatures, dropping to the 30s. we are below freezing in many areas. but those road temperatures may stay above freezing. not a huge event but still a weather alert for sure. temperatures bounce back to 45 degrees on sunday. another chance of some rain, maybe some sleet mixed in on monday. then look how warm we are next week. inauguration day, 61 degrees. tracking the flu. could it be worse this year than last? om

states are in new england, the mid atlantic and the northwest. more than 15,000 cases of the flu have been diagnosed so far and three children have died. this year's vaccine appears to be a good match for the circulating virus. doctors say there's still time to get vaccinated. an 8-year-old girl is being hailed a hero after she saved two of her brothers from a raging house fire in baltimore. the 4 and 5-year-old boys along with their mother are still in the hospital still in critical condition. sadly, six other siblings died in the fire on springwood avenue early yesterday morning. neighbors are still in shock about what happened. but they're amazed at the poise and bravery of this little girl. >> she came here to do her job on earth and her job was to save a life. >> my heart right now, it crumbles every time i'm talking about it. it keep crumbling because i could try to do more. my daughter said, dad, you couldn't do no more because there was too much fire. >> the little girl's mother

maryland congressman elijah cummings. after talking to witnesses and sifting through the evidence, investigators in baltimore are getting close to pinning down the cause of the fire. >> they think a space heater may be to blame. >> reporter: charred remains now reduced to so much rubble. this house is beyond saving. fire officials say the first equipment got here within three minutes of the alarm going in. but that wasn't enough time to save the six children who died here. we talked to maryland's fire marshal. he says that just goes to illustrate how important time is in a case like this, how important it is to have a plan of escape. practice and plan. >> when that smoke alarm goes off, you have a very short window of time to get you and your family up and out of your house. i think that's the most extremely important thing. >> later on news4, more about what you can do to keep yourself safe as the investigation continues into just what c

the blue, sleet changing to rain, maybe some spotty ice. back around the i-81 corridor, more of an ice concern out that way. currently we're well above freezing so we have a long way to fall. by tomorrow morning we will be right at that freezing mark. tracking sleet at that point. we're going to hover right around the freezing mark for this event. if you're traveling tomorrow, you still want to be cautious for slick spots. if you're skiing, unfortunately not a great ski or snowboard day. freezing rain in the forecast out there.

until sunday. it's looking nice. it's the side roads that get kind of cooler that you'll want to watch out for tomorrow. we're kind of in between that okay and bad level tomorrow, kind of a moderate impact on the area. maybe even low, especially as we head into the afternoon hours. it's only on and off showers during the afternoon. some dry time as well. sunday it's dry. the roads are going to be just fine. the roads for the most part should be just fine, but we'll see some wet roads out there on monday. maybe some isolated slick spots, especially up in areas like montgomery, loudoun county. sunday, 45. we have diminishing clouds throughout the day. it's actually looking like the best day out of the long holiday weekend.

by tuesday we're in the mid 50s. near 60 on wednesday and thursday. maybe some rain around on wednesday. there's really no snow in this forecast. as we look to the inauguration on friday, 61 degrees. so probably one of the warmest inaugurations out there. then the weekend after that, we're keeping it dry and highs in the mid 50s. in the automotive world they don't have a reputation for being very exciting, but that could be changing for the minivan. >> here's some of what's on display at the detroit auto show. the latest chrysler pacifica has a back seat navigation system. the kids can see for themselves if they're there yet.

so this statistic is sobering. every day and a half someone dies at a railroad crossing trying to beat a train. tom costello has more on a warning out today from safety officials. >> reporter: monday night on long island, a female driver killed, her car sliced in half after she drove past the crossing gates and into the path of an oncoming train. december 30th in orlando, a driver pulled to safety minutes before his car is crushed. nationwide it happens every three hours, a car or pedestrian hit by a speeding train. 200 people killed each year. and with fewer daylight hours, more accidents occur this time of year. now the government is out with an urgent warning. >> if you think trains will stop if they see a car on the tracks,
