the tweet that got a local school district employee fired. an outraged family is putting up their own reward money after a man in his 70s, a vietnam veteran, is robbed in broad daylight. the freezing rain is gone, but the icy spots could still be tricky, could still be an issue overnight and even into early tomorrow morning. thanks for joining us tonight. i'm erika gonzalez. meteorologist amelia draper has your outlook for tonight and when you wake up. >> this just in from the national weather service. they're extending the winter weather vezry for all the counties pretty much in maryland that border pennsylvania until 4:00 a.m. for the potential for slick spots out there. take a look at the map out there. freezing rain advisory still in effect for northern montgomery, howard, and baltimore, will be coming down momentarily. but the areas here in purple, this includes hagerstown and

frederick. under that winter weather advisory until 4:00 a.m. if you're traveling late tonight, early tomorrow morning, especially in those areas, you want to watch for bridges and overpasses. main roads, though, i think will be just fine. and take a look at the radar. most of the area dry. a few sprinkles out there starting to push out of the area by midnight all of this activity is gone, some patchy fog in. throughout the day tomorrow we're completely dry. erika, i've taken a look at road surface temperatures in maryland. the good news, just about every monitor coming in above freezing. so again, it's the bridges and overpasses. you really want to be cautious of. notice frederick and hagerstown right around freezing. everybody else just above that freezing mark. tomorrow morning most of aus boff freezing but you can see gaithersburg. major improvements. coming up in my full forecast. breaking news. after 146 years the curtain is coming down

on earth. ringling brothers & barnum and bailey circus breaking the news late tonight. their shows will end for good by may. company executives cite a number of reasons for calling it quits. they say declining attendance, high operating costs are a factor, and the circus has been embroiled in prolonged battles with animal rights groups. you can catch the last shows here in d.c. in march. and we'll continue to follow this breaking news and bring you details as they develop. nearly 7,000 dominion virginia customers lost power after a car hit a utility pole in fairfax county. this happened around 7:30 this evening on cedar lane. most of the customers have their power back, and dominion expects everyone to have their power restored before 3:00 a.m. cedar lane between hilltop road and willowmere drive is going to be closed for several hours so that crews can repair the pole and the power line. new at 11:00, a maryland family absolutely outraged after

thrown to the ground in broad daylight. and what angered them most is that he was trying to help the very man who robbed him. darcy spencer has the story that you'll see only on news 4. >> reporter: james copps went to the cvs story wednesday afternoonfor an errand. >> when i got out of the car he's standing there against the wall and he asked if i could let him have a couple bucks. >> and what did you say? i said sure, i'll let you have some. >> reporter: this 72-year-old vietnam veteran reached for his wallet, then was taken by surprise. >> i went to open it up and he just reached up and grabbed it real quick. the wallet was thick. i guess he figured it was a good grab. >> reporter: there was a struggle as the robber tried to get away. cox was holding on to him and the wallet. >> so he hit me or pushed me real hard and i fell

asphalt, and he kept on running. >> reporter: mr. cox says he had everything in that wallet. his military i.d., his medical cards and information. not to mention $1,000 in cash he had just gotten from the bank. his family is so outraged they're adding $500 to the charles county crime solvers' $1,000 reward fund. relatives contacted news 4 to draw attention to the case. >> he's helped the country. he's done everything he can. it's just sad. >> reporter: police tell news 4 there's no surveillance camera footage but cox was able to pull the headphones off the robber during the struggle. they're checking for dna. darcy spencer, news 4. turning to the presidential transition, the inauguration is just six days away. today dozens of people gathered at the metropolitan a.m.e. church in northwest d.c. for a pro-immigration rally. ma o

john lewis. earlier the georgia democrat said donald trump was not a legitimate president. given the possibility of russia's involvement in the election. tonight the president-elect tweeted that representative lewis should "focus on the burning and crime-infested inner cities." his earlier tweets critiqued the congressman's handling of his own district and suggested he was "all talk, no action." even conservative lawmakers are challenging that last claim. nebraska republican senator ben sasse tweeted "john lewis and his talk have changed the world." representative lewis sits down with "meet the press" moderator chuck todd in the morning. that coverage starts at 10:30. a maryland school district employee has been fired because of a tweet. the woman ran frederick county school district's twitter account. earlier this month a student tweeted to the account asking that schools be closed the following day. but the student misspelled the word "tomorrow." and the woman

today people gathered for a civil rights march and rally in the district ahead of monday's martin luther king day holiday. civil rights leader al

police arefth a woman named gloria williams, who raised kamaya as her own. that newborn, now aw teenager, found living with williams in the small town of walterboro, south carolina. neighbors describe williams as well respected in the community. >> this woman has taken care of her. she has mothered her. nurlt yured her. that's all the biological mother would have done. >> reporter: now 200 miles south in jacksonville, florida kamaya's grandmother velma akin is overjoyed. >> i haven't seen her since that day she was taken from the hospital. so i've just got a big, big hug for her. that's all. just hold her a few minutes. >> reporter: akin says it was difficult to see images of the teenager at a court hearing for williams crying. >> i saw her telling her mom that she loved her. but that was the mom that she knew. >> reporter: she says she understands how confusing it must be but wants kamaya to know she's been loved and missed by her real family, who never gave up hope.

>> that's an incredible story. meanwhile, a massive rock slide closed part of a scenic drive at utah's zion national park. this happened friday. good news here is nobody was hurt. but crews are going to have to clear 200 tons of boulders and debris before they can reopen that road. icy roads sent cars skidding across the midwest today. gosh, that is so dangerous. they may be to blame for a 20-vehicle pileup near wichita, kansas. at least two people were hurt last night. and that area is expecting more freezing rain. and ice is the problem tonight in missouri as well. people there worried about losing heat and electricity if the power goes out. the ice that melted earlier today is going to freeze back up tonight. and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> and that same system impacting us here. but thankfully the ice nowhere near as bad. an update. the national weather service has also decided to extend the

northern montgomery and howard counties and up around baltimore until 4:00 a.m. so if you're in the purple or pink and you're traveling late tonight, early tomorrow morning you want to be especially cautious for some slick spots out there. again, i can't say it enough. mainly on bridges and overpasses. road temperatures in maryland for the most part all coming in above freezing. so really good news there. throughout the day it's really nice tomorrow after a cold start. as you look to monday the forecast also improving. mainly dry for martin luther king jr. day. then the upcoming workweek, we're in the 50s from tuesday pretty much right on through next weekend. wait until you see the numbers on the ten-day. right now we're at 36 degrees. tomorrow morning we'll kind of be right around 36 through about 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 a.m. potentially some patchy fog out there. isolated fog out there right now. but by 10:00 a.m. it's all about the sunshine and warming up into the 40s. upper 40s for highs tomorrow. but if you are out driving early again, you want to be cautious for some

mainly north of town. exercise, though, long sleeves you're going to be just fine. if you're hitting the slopes, looking really great tomorrow. but make sure you have the sunglasses or the goggles because of the sun glare. and then on monday again mainly dry right now. isolated showers mainly on the corridor. here's your planner. during the early morning hours we're in the mid 30s. by lunch time low 40s and afternoon highs near 50 degrees. around 47 tomorrow night. it's still dry. and we're around 40 degrees. as we look to monday a high of 41. i want to take you hour by hour throughout your day on monday. 9:00 a.m. we're right around 37. maybe an isolated shower. but with new information coming in it's looking completely dry for just about everybody. best chance of a shower would be back around the mountains. now, there is plenty much clouds in the forecast. and through the midday and afternoon hours we're kind of hanging out right around 40 degrees. definitely chilly out there. not too bad. on tuesday as we head back to work and school make
