starts now. now at 11:00, counting down to the inauguration of donald trump. thanks for staying with us after the game. the ceremony is friday, but you'll start to see the impact days before. news4's darcy spencer is live on the national mall with what's being done to get ready. darcy? >> reporter: well, erika, it looks like there has been a total transformation down here on the national mall. you know, they have spent years restoring the grass here on the mall, and they don't want to get it destroyed in the next several days with all the people coming here. so you take a look here. they have put down this protective decking to make sure it doesn't get trampled by the thousands attending the inauguration. construction crews building the stage at the lincoln memorial where the voices of the people concert. it will be held here on thursday. they're working around the clock to make sure everything is ready in time for the inaul

workers are taking care not to damage the granite or marble on the memorial. >> national park service has monitors out there working with the contractors to make sure that when all is said and done, the lincoln memorial is in just as good of shape when it's finished as it was before. >> reporter: gates will open at 10:30 in the morning. many roads around the memorial will be closed starting 4:00 thursday morning. the teddy roosevelt bridge will close at 10:00 in the morning. some of the memorials will also be shut down until after the event, which runs from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. >> it is going to be tricky to get around, especially the downtown area. so plan accordingly. check those lists. give yourself some extra time if you're moving downtown wednesday, thursday, or friday. >> reporter: with the inauguration just five days away, a dress rehearsal was held at the capitol. there were stand-ins for the president-elect and first lady. it's a preview to make sure everything goesig

brotman. new tonight, a driver clipped a police officer's cruiser as he was responding to a call on marlborough. prince george's county police said one of their officers had their lights and sirens on when this accident happened. the other driver clipped the back of the police officer's cruiser. the officer and all four passengers of the other car had to go to the hospital with some minor injuries. that crash is now under investigation. a soccer game led to a stabbing in fairfax county today. if you've got our app, you got the breaking news alert this afternoon. police tell us two young men were hurt. officers say there was an argument during a game on the field at south lakes high school in reston, and then one person pulled out a knife. one dad says he will not be bringing his son to this same area the next time they go out as a family. >> i wouldn't expect a double stabbing to evolve from a soccer match, a neighborhood

match. a great deal of concern. >> officers say the victims are 22 and 23 years old. neither of them are seriously hurt. the police believe the incident is isolated, that there's no threat to the community. they believe the suspect may be driving a blue subaru sti. it's curtains for the most famous circus of them all, ringling bros. and barnum & bailey deciding to close after a 146-year run. the circus is calling it quits for good at the end of may. the company that operates it says ticket sales have been on the decline for years and dramatically dropped when the elephants were taken out of the show. ringling has been embroiled in long and costly legal battles with animal rights activists. fans of the circus sad to see it go. but activists say it's long overdue. >> we are so glad that this is finally coming to an end. >> it's just another thing that they don't get to experience, something from our childhood that we did.

night. officers tell us the girls are cousins, 10-year-old timyea callaway is on the left, and 16-year-old mi'easha callaway is on the right. police call police if you can help officers find these two girls. we've got some breaking news for you tonight. insurance for everybody. that's a quote from president-elect donald trump. in an interview with "the washington post" this weekend, trump said he's close to completing a plan to replace the affordable care act. trump wants to cover everyone. he didn't get into specifics, but his plan is likely to run into opposition from republicans who are against the expansion of government in the health care system. before we learned about trump's interview with "the washington post," nbc's kate snow talked to senator bernie sanders about the future of the health care law. >> president-elect trump has said that he wants to repeal it and replace it pretty much simultaneously. speaker ryan has said the same thing. can they do that, do you think? >> well, the devil is going to

right now as it stands, if you repeal the affordable care act, you're throwing over 20 million people off of health insurance. >> so what do you do as democrats? do you oppose whatever replacement plan they come up? >> no. >> do you see a scenario where -- >> kate, this is not a difficult proposition. what sane people will do is sit together and say, okay. are there problems with the affordable care act? yes. how do we address those problems and work together. what you don't do is say, we are going to repeal the entire affordable care act, and we got nothing to replace it. but i think there are some republicans who are getting a little bit nervous understanding you can't throw 20 million people off of health insurance without having some type of replacement plan. >> do you essentially think donald trump is overpromising here? >> i don't know. i mean, look, let's be honest and say that mr. trump is a very unusual president-elect. i frankly don't know what he talks about. when he talks about we're going to have -- what is it? a terrific health care plan

wonderful. what does it mean? >> and it's those big questions that brought thousands to rallies today. he will be our president on friday. what do you think of him? >> he makes me very nervous. i think that he told the american people one thing and that he was going to stand up for working families and the elderly. but since the election, i haven't heard too much talk from him about the campaign promises that he made that he will not cut social security, not cut medicare, not cut medicaid. >> as we continued our conversation in downtown burlington -- >> we can transform this country. >> -- it was clear sanders still has a fan base. >> nice to meet you. >> but he's uncomfortable when people ask if he'll run for president again. he wants to focus on the issues, not the fame he garnered running for the nation's top office. >> what media does is focus on personalities, and u

way too fast on the icy roads this weekend. they've been dealing with freezing rain for days near wichita, and the roads are very slippery. frightening moments for players inside a sports arena saturday night. they had just seconds to run before this happened. the roof starts to cave in. the whole thing captured on surveillance cameras. this happened at the sports complex in the czech republic. there were about 80 people inside that arena, and it only took a couple of seconds for the roof to come crashing down. luckily nobody was seriously hurt. the cause is still under investigatio investigation. there was about 10 inches of snow on the roof at the time of the collapse. three big smiles as a family met for the first time in 18 years. kamiyah mobley is in the middle, and she was hours old when a woman posing as a nurse kidnapped her from a hospital in florida. that woman raised kamiyah as her own for nearly two decades, and a rece t

area, but with new information coming in, the good news, the forecast improving. it's continuing to look completely dry just about everywhere. you can see clouds, though, plenty of clouds around during the afternoon hours even as we get into the evening hours. still mainly dry. then as we head on into tuesday, well, we'll be tracking showers around, especially for the second half of the day. so travel tomorrow looking great. dry roads. if you're heading to ski liberty or round top tomorrow, it's looking great there, and you don't have to worry about the sun glare either. if you're heading out to wisp, there is the chance for some light showers, maybe a bit of freezing rain out that way. if you're heading to martin luther king jr. day, a walk or parade, you'll definitely want the warm jacket. and dinner out, may be a sprinkle or two. but new information coming in, continuing to keep it dry for the most part throughout the day tomorrow. on tuesday, though, we're significantly warmer. so tomorrow, again, we're in the 40s. tuesday we're in the 50s. a high

a little boy gets the surprise of his life when he unwraps a present left outside the family home in fort bragg, north carolina.
