skipping donald trump's inauguration. more fallout from the split between the president-elect and congressman john lewis. >> so this the tipping point. a mother and grandmother killed in a shooting she had nothing to do with. the plea tonight from d.c.'s mayor to find her killers. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. first tonight, fairfax county police say the suspect in a hostage situation was armed when officers shot and killed him. >> yeah, we've got new audio and video of what happened outside the home in herndon. here's what we saw this afternoon from chopper 4. the house on covered wagon lane burning. the suspect in a standoff with police through the open door, and eventually he starts shooting. >> news 4's dorothy spencer is live with new details about what led up to the shooting and what the neighbors saw and heard. dorothy? >> reporter: well, doreen, fairfax police are still

conducting their investigation. let's show you what's happening right here. you can see detectives are right outside the front door of the home where that shooting went down this afternoon. fairfax county police just put out a press release saying they are still trying to identify the suspect. chopper 4 captured these exclusive images. the fairfax county police s.w.a.t. team tossing a flash bang into a home where a gunman was holding a man hostage. the suspect came out then went back inside. police say when he came back outside, he was armed with a knife, was shot and killed. >> less lethal forces both in the form of taser and a 40-millimeter foam bullet. >> reporter: and a regular bullet? >> the deadly force was that from a firearm. >> reporter: police were first called to the home on covered wagon lane in herndon for a shooting. the suspect had allegedly shot two brothers in a heated dispute. the men drove themselves to the hospital. when police got to the home, the

with the hostage. >> in the bathroom. we need to get him out. >> reporter: the suspect had allegedly set the house on fire and fired several shots. >> the hostage also got in touch with our 911 and said that he couldn't breathe. >> reporter: once police shot the suspect they rescued the hostage who was treated on scene for smoke inhalation. one neighbor shot this video on her cell phone. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: you could hear shots and police telling the man to get down. smoke was billowing from the home. >> like a boom, boom. i don't know how many, but it was not -- it was not the police that were shooting. something inside the house was happening. i don't know what was going on in there. >> reporter: many neighbors were scared. >> we just heard shots and we were like, oh, wow. that was very shocking to us. >> reporter: now, police are telling us they're still trying to figure out the relationship between the gunman and those two

okay. the hostage was okay as well, wasn't even hospitalized. now, the officer who fired that deadly shot is on routine administrative leave. we're live in herndon, darcy spencer, news 4. new tonight, dozens of protesters rallying outside the trump international hotel on pennsylvania avenue. this group started at 14th and t streets northwest then marched to the hotel. they carried signs that said, stop the trump regime before it starts. officials in the district are getting ready for all of the protests that could happen on inauguration day. some protest groups even practiced. d.c.'s mt. pleasant neighborhood today for what they hope will be disruptive tactics on friday. fences and barriers are up on the national mall to keep pro-trump and anti-trump

federal officials across our area are preparing for the inaugural with one purpose. >> our job is to make sure that people can come here to their nation's capital, be able to express their views in a safe, law-abiding way. >> on thursday bike lane barriers and traffic lights will be removed from pennsylvania avenue for the parade along with trash cans that could be misused. dr. martin luther king jr.'s son said he had a very constructive meeting with president-elect trump today. the two met at trump tower after trump canceled plans to visit the smithsonian museum of african-american history and culture. despite trump's war of words with congressman john lewis, he said that the president-elect has plans to unite america. >> i believe that's his intent. but i think also we have to consistently engage with pressure, public pressure. it doesn't happen automatically. my father and his team

i think that americans are prepared to do that. >> vice president lekt mike pence met with tim scott. >> president obama and the first lady honored the day by participating in a project in southeast washington. they joined the naylor road family shelter, then headed out to playground where they greeted children from the community. tonight two local congressmen are joining a growing list of lawmakers who say they won't attend donald trump's inauguration. at least 30 democrats say they're not going. many of them because donald trump attacked the civil rights icon. representative john lewis has said he doesn't consider trump a legitimate pretty. derrick ward has been getting reaction down at the mlk memorial. >> reporter: yeah, reaction here and a lot of other places around town. you

to be some issue that falls around the time of martin luther king's birthday. this year is no exemption and is rather close to the civil rights icon because it's one of his contemporaries who is at the center of this. take a look. there were parades and wreath layings on this observance of martin luther king's birthday. this year it happened at the crucible of this post-election period leading up to the holiday a statement from one of king's contemporaries congressman john lewis questioned the legitimacy of the incoming administration. >> i think the russians participated in helping this man get elected. >> reporter: the tweeted responses from the president-elect. >> this was the tipping point. >> reporter: maryland congressman anthony brown has joined the list of legislators, lewis among them, who will not attend the inauguration. >> not only did the president-elect disrespect john lewis the man, the civil rights hero and icon, but he also disrespected congressman john lewis and the office he holds and the p

is saying tonight about the killing of a d.c. grandmother. she was a fixture in her community. she lived in her southeast d.c. neighborhood for decades. she used to hand out candy to the children on her daily trip to the market today she was caught in the middle of some kind of a turf battle. she was in her motorized wheelchair on alvins road when it happened. her son called the violence ignorant and messed up. >> i don't get how the young boys up there get caught up in this war, whatever they call it, and kill somebody innocent like her. >> d.c. police say a young man was also hurt in the shooting. he's expected to recover. mayor bowser says this violence must stop and she's asking the community for tips to help police track down those involved. new at 11:00, campus police have issued an alert for students at american university they're being warned to watch out for a few men driving around in a black audi. police believe they stole the

new video shows fbi agents moving in to arrest the wife of the pulse nightclub shooter. accused of aiding and abetting the attack. people were killed when her husband omar mateen opened fire. mateen died in the shoot-out with s.w.a.t. officers. investigators questioned salman extensively afterwards. she since moved to san francisco and that's where agents arrested her this morning. she is expected in court tomorrow. a developing story in another nightclub attack in turkey. police say they've arrested the man who killed dozens on new year's eve. richard engel is in istanbul with the dramatic arrest. >> reporter: turkish police have caught the man they believe was responsible for the terrorist attack on new year's eve that killed 39 people at a popular istanbul nightclub. they say this ma

national, was captured outside of istanbul and he was staying with a friend of his and was detained along with a friend and other suspects. police say they've been monitoring him for the last four to five days but decided not to act then. they wanted to follow the suspect to see if he was in contact with other people and then around midnight local time they moved in. there was apparently no gunfight. and this was announced in a very dramatic fashion. all of the state sponsored televisions here in turkey immediately started broadcasting his photograph, a bruised face. he was held by police by the throat. also video of the suspect being marched in something of a head lock through the streets. police clearly want to show that they're on top of this situation, that this militant is in custody, that decisive action was taken. it was a lot of criticism in this country

police took so long to respond to the terrorist attack and why it has taken them so long to find this suspect. tonight, turkey is answering decisively saying that terrorist is now in custody. richard engel, nbc news, istanbul. the last man to leave his mark on the moon has died tonight. this is video of gene cernan speaking at a memorial service for astronaut neil armstrong. cernan spent three days on the moon in 1972. while there he traced the initials of his 9-year-old daughter in moon dust. on the return home he offered a message of peace and hope for all mankind. cernan flew to space three times and to the moon twice. he was 82 years old. tonight d.c. firefighters packed into an animal hospital to watch over a sheepdog they just saved. i was so struck by this i shared it on my facebook page. caesar's 3 years old.

from a burning home in northwest d.c., when firefighters got him out of that house on clingle street, caesar wasn't even breathing. firefighters tweeted out videos as they performed cpr. they managed to get caesar's lungs working again but he's still in critical condition. caesar's family was out of town at the time. and investigators don't know how that fire started. >> hopefully he's going to be okay. a massive winter storm that swept across the middle of the country has killed at least five people. >> yeah, it spawned at least one tornado in texas, and you can see here how the winds blew apart an entire patio in houston. this film started out west and dumped nearly 12 feet of snow on california's sierra mountains, then froze america's heartland, coating several states in a sheet of ice. roads looked like ice rinks with cars spinning out and crashing. right now thousands are still without power. here in our area, all we've got to worry about is the rain, but it could

>> doug's been tracking it in the storm center and we've even got some showers on the radar right now. >> we've seen a couple of showers out there during the evening hours, now a couple more coming on through the area. temperature wise we're still quite mild for this time of year. at least at 11:00 at night. we saw high temperature early today in the mid-40s. tomorrow we get into the 50s. right now looking at 43 degrees, wind out o of the south at 7 miles per hour. we're seeing rain in some parts of the area and that will continue for the next hour or two. temperatures only in the 30s to the north and west. ft. meade and clinton coming in at 30. we're tracking rain mostly in through northern virginia but coming right on into the district right now, you probably hear that on your rooftops if you were out and about, but not much in the way of heavy rain tonight and not tomorrow either. chicago and the ohio river valley, but for us we'll wait for this boundary to make it our

the future timing of this. not much around 6:00 a.m., but watch what happens around 7:00 or 8:00, we see the showers coming through. 270 starting to see that around 8:00, 9:00. that morning rush will be impacted by this. noon tomorrow still shower activity. know this, it is not everywhere. this won't be a complete washout, but still a good idea to keep the umbrella handy. by 5:00, clearing out just a little. we're not expected to see much in the way of sunshine, but we'll still see clearing as far as the radar is concerned. look at the numbers. temperatures to the north much colder. to the south and west, much warmer. 60 in atlanta and back towards eastern kentucky. that's the warmer air that will try to move in with this storm system. won't be completely warm but a lot more mild than it was today. temperatures tomorrow five to ten degrees above those temperatures with a high near 54 in the city. showers likely. nothing too heavy. but you still want to take the

umbrella. if you are heading on out. tomorrow's impact will be on the low side. not expecting too much tomorrow. light rain. the jackets and the umbrellas. you won't need the heavy coats or the large umbrellas. you can take the smaller jacket, the smaller umbrellas and that will lead to smaller commutes with wet roadways out there. now, wednesday and thursday temperatures in the mid-50s, looking good there, but look at inauguration day, 50 degrees. right now pretty good chance for shower activity. if you're heading to the inauguration around that time, mid to upper 40s for the most part. increasing clouds, p.m. showers will be possible. so once again you may need the umbrella there, too. then up to 58 on saturday. 52 on sunday. another chance of showers next monday. one thing you notice here, average high temperatures in the 40s. we're in the 50s most of the next ten days. >> not bad. >> yeah, i'll take it. still ahead, a hockey score. some football team
