saturday for shortness of breath. he is responding well to treatment, and his doctors are pleased. >> reporter: former president george h.w. bush hospitalized in houston after experiencing a shortness of breath. overnight, his office chief of staff saying he is in stable condition and, quote, doing fine. president bush is now 92 years old and needs a wheelchair to get around. his public appearances have become increasingly rare over the last several years. his most recent, 11 days ago, appearing alongside family at a houston texans playoff game. earlier this month, the family spokesperson told nbc news the 41st president and his wife, barbara, now 91, would not be attending friday's inauguration, siting their advanced ages and, quote, all that entails. the couple who celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary also didn't attend president obama's inauguration in 2013. this latest hospital stay marks the fourth in the

the white house said because her sentence was more severe than that of other leakers. the secrets she disclosed were not that harmful and shown conviction unlike edward snowden. this is a decision opposed by defense secretary ash carter. this morning president obama's decision to release convicted army leaker chels maea manning drawing fire from republicans. house speaker paul ryan calling the move outrageous. john mccain calling it a grave mistake. senator tom cotton, saying we ought not to treat a traitor like a martyr. she was known as bradley at the time of her arrest but announced her transgender identity the day after she was convicted. manning's attorney spoke about it on today. >> the goal is to be comfortable in her

it's part of a four year efficiency plan which included a larger number, $2.9 billion in investments last year. >> we've seen the power of these tweets. look what happened with boeing when the president elect took on the cost of the new air force one. their stock nose dived. it's happened with other countries. how are the companies preparing for the hostile tweets and are they worried what it does to their stock price? >> they're worried because we see momentary dips although most of that comes up fairly quickly. companies are willing to deal with it as a pr issue. they're reacting or rolling out announcements in order to try to avoid any bad basically twitter attention from donald trump. they have stressed just about except for the carrier deal which involved some state benefits from a state government they have stressed they're not changing their business model. >> let's go back to where we started. if you had to rate the president elect's

or job preservation over the course of this two month transition how would you rate it. >> very small or non-existent. there's a fantasy football aura to all of this. when companies do thing he's selectively respond to it. these countries have a legal obligation to basically pursue shareholder value. they cannot respond to a politician. even the president. and put some sort of political or pr messaging above the legal obligation they owe to their shareholders to do what they think is best in the long term interests. another point, as you know, many of these companies stress their hiring and investment decisions are months if not years in the making. they are not responses to a couple days of internet attention. >> good to put this all in

coverage on the inauguration, it starts 7:00 a.m. an update on a story we've been following since early last week. the manhunt is early for mar keith loyd, the man wanted in the shooting of an orlando police officer and his pregnant girlfriend. he was put in the handcuffs of police sergeant debra clayton. he was transferred from the police department to an orlando hospital for injuries he sustained during that arrest. we have brian williams from overseas this morning, a series of three strong earthquakes hit central italy in the span of about an hour. shaking the same region that suffered a series of deadly quakes last year. the strongest of the three had a magnitude of 5.7. there were no immediate reports

i'm in houston where mr. bush has been hospitalized since saturday. this morning our nation's 41st president resting comfortably after experiencing a shortness of breath. overnight his office chief of staff saying he's in stable condition and quote, doing fine. president bush, now 92 years old needs a wheelchair to get around. his public appearances have become increasingly rare over the last several years. his most recent 11 days ago appearing alongside family at a houston texans playoff game. earlier this month the family spokesperson told nbc news the 41st president and his wife, barbara, now 91 would not be attending friday's inauguration citing their advanced age and all that entails. they just celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary also did not attend president obama's inauguration in 2013. the latest hospital stay marks the fifth in the past five years. he

be happy, it's glad. this morning on today's food we have a one pot pot roast with a slow cooker. >> curtis stone is the chef and owner of gwen restaurant and butcher shop in hollywood. curtis, good morning. >> good morning. how you doing, guy? >> great. what are we making today? >> a mexican style pot roast. a tin of tomatoes. easiest thing in the world. chipotle, garlic and oregano. cumin. >> you pronounce it cumin? >> cumin. how do you pronounce it? >> cumin. >> so you blend that up. it's a spicy tomato broth effectively. you get the point. it comes out looking like this. then you start with a big piece of pork shoulder. season it generously. >> right. >> salt and pepper.

you don't need too much pepper because y same on the other side. it's a big piece of pork. i've taken the bone out. make sure you get -- the good thing about a shoulder it's inexpensive because it's usually tough. a little bit of flour. then into a nice hot pan with a little bit of oil. you throw it in like this, al. >> you're going to brown that off? >> brown that off. once you get a nice crust on it we'll go up the front where i've cheated and done one. you want to get the caramelization until it looks like this guy. >> oh, yeah. >> see how that's beautiful and brown. in the same pan, throw some peppers and some onions. you're going to develop some of the flower. >> got incrunthe crunchy bits. >> pick up your tomato pixtumix all right,i st tt .
