hospitalize. >> president obama started a news conference with a very kind message to george and barbara bush. >> they are as fine a couple as we know. and so we want to send our prayers and our love to them. >> and just a little bit later, we're going to be going to the live desk a little bit later in the show to talk about some of the other topics that president obama touched on during his final news conference at the white house. we want to begin this afternoon with new information on how our 41st president is doing, as well as his wife barbara. >> the former president is in stable condition, we're told he's resting comfortably in icu at houston methodist hospital. he was taken there and admitted over the weekend after complaining of shortness of breath. the former president was treated for an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia. his wife, barbara, was admitted to the same hospital this morning as a precaution after she experienced coughing a

fatigue. we're closely watching both and we'll bring more information on this story later in our newscast. several of president-elect trump's nominees testified at their confirmation hearings today. >> one of the most contentious, oak attorney general, scott prui pruitt, told lawmakers he disagrees with climate change and he got into an intense back and forth over what he would do about it. and the next u.n. ambassador, south carolina governor nikki haley condemned the obama administration for blocking the administration. on russia she supports, and lacks foreign policy experience, she says she'll bring reforms to the u.n. meanwhile, president-elect donald trump's pick for commerce secretary told lawmakers today he favors sensible

union, and believes his vast business dealings have given him a sort of experience fighting other countries on fair trade practices. wilbur ross noted his endorsement for the united steel workers union, proof he will work to protect american jobs. ross says the north american free trade agreement will be among the first things on his agenda. metro is making changes to accommodate all of the folks planning to attend the women's march on washington. the trains will start rolling at 5:00 saturday morning. that's two hours earlier than normal, and some two dozen additional trains will be added to the red and orange lines. they will run every 12 minutes. there will also be no track work on saturday. and we are working for you to help you november gate around all of the road closures. >> parking restrictions already in place on the national mall, and transportation reporter adam tuss has a closer look at how this is going to impact your commute. >> reporter: the intensy

certainly picked up here in washington. we have plenty of security going into place, these fences here along the national mall. let me walk you around and show what it's like here. we have the scaffolding going up for the big screens, a lot of protective measures put in place trying to protect the grass, actually, so the huge crowds that come here don't mess up the national mall. and a lot of people simply in town just to see the events, see the sights. you're just in the stone's throw from the capitol, draped in the american flag. as far as getting around here, that's getting more challenging. we have seen parking restrictions go into effect, more and more people coming into the city, so trains and buses and airports are getting more crowded. at union station, amtrak says expect heavier security. >> you're going to see increased patrols, increased k-9 patrols, increased identification checks and baggage screenings as well. >> coming up on nbc washington, we'll have much more for you. why local road

at the beginning of his final news conference at the white house. >> yeah, he also talked about the upcoming inauguration, and he defended his decision to commute some prison sentences. scott macfarlane is at the live desk with more on the president's comments. >> reporter: good afternoon chris and pat. the president's news conference part nostalgia and part business. he began by thanking the press for its amendmeyears of coverag working on defending the freedom of the press into his remarks. president obama said it was part of what makes our country unique. he also defended his decision to commute the prison sentence of former army intelligence analyst, chelsea manning. president obama said her sentence was disproportionate with the sentences of others who leaked classified information. the reporter also asked about the decisions of dozens of democrats to sit out president-elect trump's inauguration day festivities. here's what mr. obama had to say about that. >> with respect to the inauguration, i'm not go t

all i know, i'm going to be there. so is michelle. and i have been checking the weather, and i'm heartened by the fact it won't be as cold as my first inauguration. because that was cold. >> reporter: the president ending his remarks on an optimistic note, saying he believes in the country and believes in the american people and perhaps with a message to other democrats and people who don't support the incoming president, he added, quote, we're going to be okay. back to you. >> thank you, scott. now first at 4:00, we are working to get more information about a shooting at pennsylvania avenue northwest near a federal building. it happened at 12th and pennsylvania, just after 1:30 this afternoon. our news4 crew was there as police taped off part of the sidewalk. d.c. police say a man accidentally shot himself in the leg. we're working to determine whether the man was a security guard there. emts rushed him to the hospital. investigators are looking into exactly what happened. >>w

it looks like fewer people are getting frustrated with some aspects of air travel. the u.s. department of transportation says on-time arrivals for airlines were up to 86% in november. just an improvement ino

previous month and november of the last year. lost and damaged luggage rates also hit their lowest level since 1987. and consumer complaints down 34% from the previous year. americans airlines is rolling out new lower fares, but it could cost you in terms of convenience. its new basic economy prices aim to offer cheaper ticket, but you won't be able to store anything in the overhead bins. you're going to be the last group to board the plane and your ticket will not be eligible for upgrades or refunds. now the basic economy fares will go on sale sometime in late february. we are at the halfway point now in the school year for many local districts, and this week, one district in maryland is talking about a big change to year-round school. news4 has learned a frederick county public schools committee will discuss this idea at a meeting tomorrow night. it's not a formal proposal right now, but one the district and the superintendent have discussed before. a district spokesperson sa

new video into the news room appears to show what police are calling a senseless crime. it just came in. i'm scott macfarlane at the live desk to show you some surveillance video released to us late today. if you look at the right of your screen, should be able to see two people running. one of the men appears to be chasing the other one. you see it zoom in here. you can also see someone who appears to be in a wheelchair, 68-year-old vivian marro shot in the 2400 block in southwest washington, d.c., monday morning. she was making her daily trip to the market in her wheelchair. her loved ones tell us she was a fixture in the community and would hand out treats to the children in the neighborhood. one man was also shot and injured in that incident. he is expected to survive. investigators say his role in the shooting is unclear.

that surveillance video will help them catch the shooter. at the live desk, i'm scott macfarlane. >> thank you, scott. parents who have kids at a particular daycare in virginia are very worried and they have every right to be. someone fired a bullet through a window there last week. >> and now those parents are finding out about more bullet holes in the same building, demanding answers a meeting taking place right now. >> kristin wright is following the story in falls church. >> reporter: moms and dads who have children at this bright horizon at leesburg pike are nervous about that. police say a bullet went through one of the front windows of the daycare center last week. and what we're learning now is that there is more than one bullet hole. and police are saying they do not know where they're coming from. no one has been hurt. none of the children were hit. but one of the parentsl

with details you need to know about to keep your information safe. >> reporter: that's right, pat. this is a highly effective phishing scam stealing log-in credentials and it's having a wide impact, even on the experienced technical users. the warning coming from security experts at word fence. so here's how the scam actually works. you get an e-mail that may be from someone you know who has had their account hacked. it includes an image of an attachment you recognize from the center. but if you click on that image, a new tab opens up, and you are prompted by gmail to sign in again. the sign-in page, by the way, is identical to what you're used to seeing. but it is a fake. so to protect yourself, check the location bar. if you see the words "data text html" at the beginning of the url, that's the fake e-mail. delete it. make sure there is nothing before the host name, which would be

news4 reached out to google, of course. we are told they are aware of this phishing scam and they are continuing to strengthen their defenses against it. users can activate a two-step verification process for additional account protection. back to you guys. >> thank you, susan. you know, it's not that unusual to get a pretty warm day in the wintertime. but usually it's just that. it's a day. >> yeah. we have got a long stretch going, and doug, for how long? >> it looks like it's going to last through the day tomorrow, and then on friday, that's when things seem to change a little bit. but still well above average temperatures right on through most of the next week. most of the next ten days as we look outside right now. beautiful conditions. it really is a very nice afternoon. we're seeing partly to mostly cloudy skies right now. a lot more sunshine south. temperatures now in the 50s all day. right now, 57. we got to 60 earlier. nice and mild. even by 7:00 tonight. and then dropping into the 40s by 11:00.

mid 40s and still there. i don't see any cold air in the forecast. 53 at dulles. 57 at quantico because of the blue ridge. we are in the 40s to around 50 degrees. much cooler by 10 degrees. the blue ridge actually helping us to stay on the warmer side today. the winds coming from the northwest. we call them down-sloping winds and they help to warm the atmosphere. and that's why we're warmer to the east of the mountains. radar, nothing to show in our immediate area. and really not much in our region. we did have a couple showers coming through with a little system poking through earlier today. that's what brought us some cloud cover. now we're watching this system down to the south. that's the one that's going to affect us during the day on friday. and your temperatures while they're going to respond to that. 57 d.c. 67 in raleigh. in the 80s in south carolina. 30s back to the north and west. but the cold air not moving our way. it's going to stay just to our west, just to the west of the mountains. and it has been snowing in our mountains, too, today. a little bit of snow back towards snowshoe.

our area. plenty of sunshine. a few clouds from time to time. temperatures around 57 degrees. so another nice mild afternoon tomorrow. but then we get to friday. let's talk about that rain chance on friday. and of course, it's inauguration day. here we are at 6:00 a.m. not much going on, a few showers out there for that morning rush. but then by 10:00, notice a pretty good shield of rain moving in around 10:00. inauguration around 11:30. the rain coming down. it's going to be mostly on the light side, but it is going to be there between noon and 2:00. and then it exits from the time the parade starts, on the dry side. but people on the wet side there after that rain moves on through here. so inauguration forecast, looking like this. 49 degrees, so a little bit cooler. increasing clouds and light rain chances really throughout the early portion of the afternoon. so this is something we're going to continue to watch for you. the one thing to remember if you're headed down, you cannot take umbrellas into the actual event. so think about that one. 56 on

about this topic. nonprofit group has filed a complaint against american airlines over peanuts. what is the complaint? >> so essentially, this is a group of people with food allergy, and the complaint is there is a violation of the air carriers access act. these people want to be able to get on the plane, clean up their environment and preboard. >> okay. but american doesn't even serve peanuts. so why are its passengers so worried about this? >> well, because the peanut residue. nowadays, everybody brings something on the plane to eat, and the concern is that they're going to get a hold of a peanut beforehand. it's a nutrition food that doesn't refrigeration. >> so people want to get on board early and wipe down their tray tables and seats. does that work? >> it actually does. there has been some study of this by the university of michigan that wiping down the tray tables, the seats, the armrest, does work. but here's the key. is it doesn't make a difference when you do it. you don't need to preboard, necessarily, to get that done.

fatigue. president obama offered his prayers to the bush family and also talked about the upcoming inauguration and defended his decision to pardon people and commute prison sentences. thousands of national guard members from all over the country will help provide security during the inauguration and the parade. many of them started arriving today. their first stop is at the d.c. armory in southeast where they're being depressbriefed ong ahead. tomorrow guard members will take an oath, giving them the official capacity to help law enforcement with things like traffic control and crowd management. and early inauguration for the wax donald trump today. madame tussauds's museum lifted the curtain on its presidential figure. the museum says mr. trump is the first president to have already had his likeness in wax. he was fitted for the first version at trump tower in new york in 1997. it took a team of 20ti

>> i will not go, and i will not view it. because to do those things is to support what he represents. and i don't think he's going to represent america as the way that america should be represented. we know our representative john lewis got into a row with the president-elect. has that factored in at all? >> a lot of people it is certainly weighing them. they made their decisions ahead of time. but it didn't help when john lewis and president-elect trump got into this back and forth. but, you know, it -- when he began to talk about john lewis' qualifications during the mlk holiday, that solidified people saying they're not going to go. i talked to lisa earlier today. she lives in green belt. she tells me she respects congressman lewis' decision to call out donald trump, but she feels democrats might be going too far and she also has thoughts about the young people from our area, colleges and

halfway house, but says not in her backyard. >> a proposal to put a halfway house for federal inmates here in this building, in the warehouse district. several hundred yards away, there is a playground with parents and kids and folks who live not too far away from this facility, and they are, of course, very concerned. it's a 50,000-foot square foot facility. 142 beds. the people who live in the town tell me had they known about this proposal or even if it had existed before they bought their homes, they never would have done it. >> i was just concerned about the location, i think. not so much the services. i think there's probably a need in pg county for services like that. but it's a 499 square miles and this is 1.3 square miles full of young families and children like myself. >> reporter: this is just the beginning of the process and there's a whole other side to this argument from the organization trying to open the halfway house

i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> right now, a man is covering from serious burns. he was taken to a local hospital after trying to set himself on fire outside the trump hotel here in washington. he said it was an act of protest over the election. police responded to the hotel after getting a call about a person in distress. authorities haven't yet released the man's name. last night he would only tell us he was from california. one of the groups coming to washington to support president-elect trump is bikers for trump. thousands of bikers are expected to attend his inauguration on friday. news4's chris gordon at john marshall plaza with more on what they have got planned. >> reporter: the bikers for trump are going to be holding a rally here in john marshall park. they say they expect about 5,000, but they really don't know how many bikers from across the country are coming. you see behind me, two representatives meeting with the

currently temperatures now in the 50s from 52 gaithersburg to 57 in the district. we start off thursday right around 39 degrees. so it is going to be chilly early in the morning. but once we work our way toward the late-morning and midday hours, it warms up nicely. low 50s, and, again, less wind. a high tomorrow of 57, and we hit that around 3:00 in the afternoon. tomorrow evening, keeping it dry. 7:00 p.m., temperature right around 50 degrees. so kind of a warm jacket, but not the warmest jacket you have tomorrow. the spring jacket. weather outlook as we look to the weekend and friday for the inauguration, if you're headed down there, you want the poncho as doug mentioned earlier. umbrellas are prohibited. make sure you have a rain jacket or something waterproof for an outer layer. the women's march happening saturday morning. looking good. a little chilly, but we keep it dry. and if you're planning on going skiing this weekend, i was hoping to go. rain in the forecast on sunday.

from registering trademarks that are deemed offensive. asian-american ban that calls itself the slants is seeking trademark protection. the office has denied them, saying the name is disparaging toward asian-americans. after hearing arguments today, justice ruth guarder ginsberg said it isn't enforced consistently. other justices said a need to maintain some limits on offensive trademark names. a victory would be welcome news for washington's team. the team had its trademark protection cancelled in 2014 for the very same reason. and the case is on hold until the court releases a decision on the band name. the man wanted for shooting and killing an orlando police lieutenant spent the night in the hospital. he was injured last night when officers finally caught up with him after a nine-day manhunt. >> do you have anything to say

>> reporter: orlando police led a blooded and bandaged maurkice lloyd into their vehicle last night. he was hurt in some sort of fight with police while they were trying to arrest him. he was found at an abandoned house wearing body armor and holding two guns. one they said had the capacity to fire 100 rounds. they say he dropped those guns, but then resisted arrest. police got him into custody using the same handcuffs lieutenant debra clayton owned before she was shot and killed last monday. outside an orlando walmart. >> many of the officers that i spoke to tonight actually broke down in tears. >> reporter: the manhunt finally over after nine tense days. but the criminal investigation could be just beginning. >> anyone who harbored, abated -- aided or abetted him in way. we know from our investigation that people did. >> reporter: overnight, we saw tactical officers leaving the hospital, but no sign of the

we're continuing to get updates on president bush and his wife, barbara, both in a hospital in houston. >> mrs. bush was admitted today as a precaution following the former president's admission over the weekend, because of pneumonia. more now from nbc's chris clackum. >> reporter: less than two weeks ago, former president george h.b. bush was at the houston texans' playoff football game. by saturday he was admitted to houston methodist hospital, complaining about shortness of breath. by wednesday, the former president was moved to the hospital's intensive care unit to, quote, address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia. also wednesday, his wife, former first lady, barbara bush, joined him in the hospital, admitted as

wait until you see what happened here. more daylight gun violence in our city. monday a 68-year-old woman in a wheelchair, an innocent by stabbeder, shot and killed in a barrage of bullets in southeast. this morning, a suspect fires seven shots at an off-duty police officer. the officer wasn't hit, but it was close, and the chief is not happy about what's going on here. >> this mentality where people feel like they can discharge firearms in our city, that has to stop. >> reporter: this mercedes car, the centerpiece of a bizarre series of violent encounters with the cops. it ended up with three different crime scenes in three different neighborhoods. scene one, the ecington neighborhood in northeast. an off-duty police officer driving a private car sees that mercedes moving

the street. 911 he calls it in and follows it. but that mercedes comes to a stop. a guy gets out and fires about a half dozen shots at the cop. and then that mercedes speeds away. a police helicopter tracks the mercedes to scene number two. the blooming dale enablneighbor. there they say the passenger gets out of the mercedes and in an alley, a d.c. officer fires his weapon. no one hit there. but a gun is recovered and a man is picked up. that helicopter then follows the mercedes to scene number three, ladroit park. here on fifth street, the mercedes tries to elude the cops and ends up crashing into a parked car. the air bag deployed. now, the driver didn't stay put in that crashed car. he continued to run away on foot. he went up around the
