meanwhile, protesters get up and dance. their message to incoming president mike pence. >> and the latest tonight on the health of our 41st president. when george h.w. bush and his wife barbara could get out of the hospital. good evening, everybody. we're just over 36 hours from donald trump being sworn in as the 45th president of the united states. >> d.c. is preparing for up to 900,000 people to pour in the city this weekend. some to show support, others to protests. >> already two large protests tonight, this one outside the temporary home of vice president-elect mike pence in the chevy chase section of d.c. the group work for peace held what it called a dance party protest against homophobia. the group was more than 100 strong to want. hundreds of anti-trump

ku klux klan style hoods and donald trump masks, others carrying signs calling trump a fascist. this group has been protesting every night this week. so far no reports of any arrests. meanwhile, the president and vice president-elect are kicking off their inaugural festivities tomorrow. >> donald trump will participate in a wreath laying at the arlington national cemetery in the afternoon then he and mike pence will appear at a lincoln memorial welcome celebration. >> streets around that area will close in just a couple of hours. news 4's thshomari stone with t leadup to the inauguration. shomari? >> reporter: good evening, i'm at the foot of the arlington memorial bridge and at 3:00 a.m. it will be closed. it will be closed for tomorrow morning's commute so plan accordingly. on the other side of the bridge is the lincoln memorial. right now crews are working, making the final preparations for tomorrow morning's inauguration concert.

that means they can make arrests and those arrests can be prosecuted in court. we're also going to see thousands of bikers in our area for the inauguration and tonight bikers for trump say they're ready to stand with police and keep protesters back. the group will hold a rally friday in john marshall park along pennsylvania avenue. that rally will be during the inauguration luncheon. >> we're trying to keep this about the unsung hero so we're just going to be celebrating the people that have been working hard on the campaign for the sole purpose of seeing donald trump elected president. >> the group expects about 5,000 but says it doesn't know how many bikers will be coming. if you're downtown tomorrow, you'll really notice that first wave of road closures as early as the morning rush, closures along pennsylvania avenue near the capital begin at 3:00 a.m., then at 4:00 you heard shomari mention the arlington memorial bridge will shut down. more closures around the lincoln memorial start at 5:00 a.m.

and 23rd streets closes at 10:00 a.m. then closures around union station from 2:00 to 11:00 at night and everything begins shutting down around capitol hill at 5:00 p.m. here's a secret service map showing all the street closures, parking restrictions in the green zone start tomorrow morning at 7:00 and last until saturday. parking is restricting in the red zone. streets will be closed all day friday. then saturday the women's march. the streets you see in red near the capitol will be closed most of the day. the streets in yellow will have rolling closures during the march itself. metro announced today it will open early saturday for the women's march. for more on how to get around friday and saturday, search "inauguration metro" in our nbc washington app. >> no umbrellas around friday and if you're going to the

two days before the inauguration of a new president the country's attention is focused on a former president. president george h.w. bush is in intensive care in the how about tonight because of respiratory issues. >> former first lady barbara bush is in the same houston hospital as well suffering from fatigue tonight. nbc's chris claklakham with an update on their conditions. >> reporter: less than two weeks ago, former president george h.w. bush was at the houston texan's football game. by saturday he was admitted to the hospital complaining about shortness of breath. by wednesday he was moved to the intensive care unit to "address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia." >> the president was having problems breathing due to some obstruction in hiss lungs and so they had to put a tube in there to get the obstructions out. >> also wednesday his wife, former first lady barbara

in virginia. it happened just about 90 minutes ago but the commonwealth's lethal injection drugs have sparked a lot of controversy. rickey gray was convicted of robbing a family in richmond in 2006. he tied them up in the basement, slashed their throats and set the house on fire. a mother, father and two little girls four and nine years old were killed. his defense team filed an appeal saying the state didn't give him enough information about the drugs it would use to kill him. they argue that the sedative midazolam has failed to render some people unconscious and it could torture gray to death. a lot of the big pharmaceutical companies stopped selling lethal injection drugs so states like virginia started getting them from so-called compounding pharmacies which are not subject to the same federal regulations. at the live desk. chris lawrence. new tonight, we've learned a man from sacramento, california, is the one behind bars for allegedly shooting at an off

intersection of third and u streets in northeast about 9:45 this morning. police say edward bowling, jr., shot at the off duty officer who had been following him. that led to a chase throughout northwest d.c. fortunately nobody was hurt. new video from d.c. police appears to show the shooting of a grandmother in a wheelchair. 68-year-old vivian mara was killed monday morning in the 2400 block of elvins road southeast. video shows a gunman chasing another man there. it also shows who authorities believe is marrow in her wheelchair. they don't believe she was the intended target. marrow's family says she was a fixture in the community and handed out treats to children in the neighborhood. investigators hope the video helps them catch her kill er. next, a local mother taking a child out of her

purdue owns an agriculture business and is a veterinarian. his nomination completes trump's cabinet two days before the new president is sworp in. according to nbc news, his cabinet does not include any democrats or latinos. now an update to a story you saw first on 4. a d.c. police officer is out of the hospital after being hit by a car that was in vice president-elect mike pence's motorcade. the officer was conducting traffic when he was hit. he had a minor injury but he is expected to be okay. two burglaries and a quarter of a million dollars in damage and tonight police are looking for the people who vandalized historic bancroft elementary school in northwest washington. as you can imagine parents are pretty upset, jackie benson talked to some of them tonight. >> reporter: a construction fence surrounds the ssive modernization project at bancroft elementary school at

d.c. police reports reveal the complex where two smaller buildings are in the process of being demolished was burglarized not once but twice in two weeks. on the weekend of january 7, someone broke into the construction equipment shed and stole the keys to a bulldozer and backhoe. a week later the burglars came back and used the heavy equipment to vandalize the school's soccer field, playground and security cameras. they also used spray paint to deface the brick walls of the school built in 1923. >> i didn't even know that happened. i can't imagine. i live a block away and i didn't even know that happened. >> reporter: students have been relocated to another school during the multiyear project but are dropped off and picked up at bancroft each day. parent lisa spencer expressed dismay upon learning of the costly damage estimated by police at between $200,000 and $250,000. >> i don't know who is doing that but they run around the city vandalizing the playground. >> it's not

vandalism has delayed the project which was scheduled to be completed in summer of 2018. tonight, parents have concerns about safety after somebody fired a bullet through a day care window in falls church. more bullet marks were found on the other side of the building. police say multiple shots with fired thursday. one came through the window of a pre-k classroom at bright horizons on leesburg pike. children were in the room taking naps when it happened. nobody was hit. we spoke to one mother who has pulled her son out of the center. i'm so thankful that nothing happened and what would the conversation be if something did? >> bright horizons declined to talk to us on camera but told us they aren't letting the children on the playground and they say they've increased security. the washington redskins could end up winning their trademark battle without going back to court. today the supreme court raised doubts about whether the government can deny trademarks
