♪ here in the district, a pretty intimate crowd at the voices of the people eept neven the lincoln memorial. we have a team of reporters fanned out across our region this evening with less than 24 hours to go before the big ceremony. let's begin with news4's mark e segraves live. what's the scene where you are? >> reporter: things are just getting underway here with the make america great again welcome celebration. just a few minutes ago president-elect and mrs. trump came down the steps of the lincoln memorial to thunderous applause from the crowds here. but i can tell you the crowds here all day have been much smaller than anticipated by organizers. the

where several bands from around the country performed, there were really only dozens of people who showed up for that. right now we can show you the crowds here much smaller, again, than what organizers had anticipated. the crowd goes about halfway down the reflection pool. we talked to several people who were here today and they said despite the small crowd, they're very enthus i can't say tiiasti here to support the next president of the united states. what made you want to come here? >> donald trump. >> i'm just here to see trump. >> to be a participant in the future of american history and say i was here. >> we're here to support donald trump. we voted for him, we support him. we like him. he's our president. >> reporter: i can tell you the moment donald trump's picture came on the big telescreens here, the

trump, trump, trump. he gave a wave, a salute to the president lincoln statue. he is now seated in the front row watching this concert underway. he's expected to make a speech in about 45 minutes before this crowd. if you're still planning oncoming down, a lot of room to get up close and move around. the finishing touches falling into place on the national mall. by this time tomorrow, we will be in the thick of things. there's a lot you need to know if you plan on getting around the district tomorrow. news4's meagan fitzgerald as more on that. >> reporter: a lot to know. the park service tells us be sure that you bring some comfortable walking shoes because you'll need them. if you take a look behind us here, you can see these truckloads of roadblocks coming into the downtown area. they will be put in front of road

this means you're going to have to do a lot of walking. here's a new development. you can bring an umbrella, but it has to be that small tote style size, not the big golf umbrella. but they can't stress enough of making sure you know what you can bring and what is not allowed on the mall. the countdown begins. we are just hours away from the 58th presidential inauguration. last-minute preps in the mall are underway. crews are putting roadblocks in place and securing the perimeter around the mall. this morning secretary of homeland security jeh johnson took a walk arounds pennsylvania avenue near freedom plaza to inspect security measures. he says he's impressed. while crews worked to ensure that things are in place for the hundreds of thousands of people expected on the mall, the national park service says be sure you know exactly what you can't bring before you arrive. >> no coolers, no glass bottles. certai n

keep you safe. fedex field was filled with thousands of national guardsmen today where they took the oath of duty. >> constitution of the united states, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. >> all together, that's a chorus there. this oath is given before every inauguration so these guardsmen and women can help support d.c. police with crowd control and traffic management. 3500 police officers from around the nation will assist d.c. police at this inauguration. they were sworn in today at the d.c. armory. in total, there will be nearly 30,000 law enforcement fanning out across the city over the next couple of days. our coverage continues to let you know more about what you need to know as you get around town the next few days. the main entrance to union station is

trip card in advance. you can do that at any metro rail station this evening. also you can go to cvs or giant stores and pick up a metro card. >> reporter: pentagon, smithsonian, federal triangle, mount vernon scare and archives will be closed tomorrow. the women's march on saturday is also drawing equal attention from transportation leaders. listen to the comparison on tour buses. >> the inauguration is probably hosting about 400 buses at this point in terms of reservations. then the women's march, they've sold out rfk and a lot of other lots in the district. so that's north of 2,000. >> reporter: again, 400 tour buses tomorrow, 2,000 scheduled for saturday. still people will be driving and flying in for the event. right now it's hard to say which day will be busier. right now the tips to keep you safe

the rescue efforts underway to find dozens of people who are still missing. >> reporter: disaster striking in the dead of night. the massive avalanche burying a mountainside ski resort. this is the terrifying aftermath. the indoor pool inundated by debris, windows blocked, the hallways unpassable. dozens are still unaccounted for. heavy snowfall complicating the search. even plows had trouble clearing the roads. this region was devastated by a deadly quake just five months ago. 300 people died. historic towns obliterated. yesterday a series of earthquakes jolted the area again. beneath the snow, a luxury spa and ski resort. the four star chalet was popular with families. now a scene of devastation. 22 guests were registered at the hotel, six or seven staff members. most are still missing. relatives are desperate for news of loved ones.

. >> reporter: this is a new popular store called the outrage. customers waiting as long as 90 minutes to get into the store. they've already gotten thousands of customers. they offer all kinds of democrat nis products, t-shirts, sweatshirts, posters. nasty women is a reference to a name trump called hillary clinton during the campaign. the outrage store says they donate part of their profits to women's rights organizations like planned parenthood. >> some people come in the store. we've got posters everywhere. people just walk in. they're like yes, this is amazing. it's been incredible. >> she tells me the store's lease goes to the middle of february. they're hoping to find a permanent location so they can continue selling these products for at least the next four year

she even broke into a tearful apology. the former attorney along with her husband convicted last year in a brutal home invasion from november 2014. one that targeted her former boss and his wife. andrew schmule held them hostage in their mcclain home. alicia was in her car communicating with her husband through go phones. she said i would just like to tell them i'm extremely sorry for my actions. i hope that someday you'll be able to forgive me for all the harm that has come from this. her defense is arguing she didn't know what her husband had planned the night of the attack. we expect the judge to sentence the former lawyer any minute now.

there is a battle in prince george's county over funding for a new regional medical center in largo. state law passed last year mandates that a certain amount of money has to go to that project. some lawmakers say governor larry hogan stripped money from the project in his latest state budget. the governor says the funding allocated in the budget is exactly the amount hospital officials requested. a recall of 3 million washing machines after reports some of them exploded. >> now more problems for customers who say they're not get it cting the help they need the company. more live images from the trump welcome celebration down at the lincoln memorial.

arlington national cemetery. now tote style umbrellas, the ones that collapse down, will be allowed on the parade route as well as at the national mall for the inauguration. the revision, however, doesn't apply to you who are going to be in the ticketed areas. you are still not allowed to bring umbrellas in those areas. >> some of them paid big bucks for those tickets. hundreds are honoring the outgoing commander in chief at a thank you obama concert at arena stage in southwest right now. nbc 4 responds to viewers' complaints concerning samsung's recalled top loading washing machine. they recalled nearly 3 million washing machines in november after reports of them exploding. viewers are telling susan hogan they're not getting the help they need from the customer

>> some customers paid as much as $1500 for a new samsung washing machine. now fallout over the potentially dangerous appliances has turned into what viewers are calling a remedy nightmare. colleen has three kids, two dogs and a ton of laundry. when she heard about the samsung washing machine recall, she was hoping hers wasn't on the list. >> took a picture of the model number in the back and then i prayed that that number wasn't going to be one of the ones recalled. sure enough the number matched up online. >> then she saw this, pictures of samsung washing machines just like hers exploded into pieces. the consumer product safety commission's website shows the dangerous destruction. >> they're terrifying. >> reporter: colleen says her washer is just three years old. she paid $850 which included a warranty. >> the reason we bought it was the higher

>> reporter: samsung blames excessive vibration during the spin cycle as the problem and instructed consumers to only use the delicate spin speed to avoid injury. customers have three options, refund, replace or repair. as colleen learned the refund is prorated based on the age of your washer. she was furious when she was told just how little she'd get back. >> it was only going to be $157 toward a new washer. after paying 850, we felt like that wasn't a fair amount. >> reporter: so you chose to do the repair. >> yes. >> reporter: the repair option, a sticker that covers the option for the high spin cycle. >> it's a sticker that doesn't let you choose these options even though that's why we bought the washer. >> reporter: samsung would also reinforce the brackets to hold the lid down. >> i've seen so many people on facebook with

>> reporter: colleen's complaint is one of many we received across the country. our nbc stations have heard similar complaints. some consumers say samsung is not spooresponding. others complain about rude customer service reps, unfair rebates. we've also heard inconsistent information given to consumers about the recall. we asked the cpsc about the complaints pouring in. it told us it's working with samsung to ensure better over sight of the contractors hired to fix the washing machine. >> this isn't fair. an $850 product that they're ignoring us. >> reporter: not anymore. in a statement samsung tells us it is listening to and learning from every consumer's experience in order to constantly improver its processes. its priority now is to reduce any safety risks in the home and provide safe choices to consumers affected by this recall. samsung says consumers who chose the free

also receive a one-year extension of the limited manufacturers warranty regardless of the age of their washer. no pressure, but as we like to say, tomorrow is kind of a big day around this town. >> so i don't feel any pressure about the forecast tomorrow. what's difficult is when you have a forecast for a very important day and you don't know if it's going to rain or it's not going to rain. >> we know it is. >> it's going to rain. you want to prepare for that. it's going to be a chilly rain. we're going to see a steady rain for a few hours most likely starting around the mid to late morning hours and winding down during the afternoon. if you're headed out tomorrow, make sure you have the rain gear handy. for saturday, it's a dry day, but there is going to be some really thick fog around during the morning hours. i'm talking about really low visibility. so if you're driving saturday morning, m y

down to the women's march. you do want to keep that in mind. sunday and monday we have a nor'easter impacting the area. that's going to bring more rain, a steady heavy rain at times. sunday into monday, we could see about 1-3 inches. 49 degrees in washington, cloudy overnight. tomorrow we start off the day at 41. maybe a light shower around during the morning hours. it's really the late morning and midday hours when we've tracking showers, upper 40s at that point, upper 40s at 3:00 p.m. still impacting the area. starting to wind down by 7:00 p.m. it is dry at 48 degrees. your outlook for tomorrow, if you're heading down to the inauguration, showers are likely down there. if you're heading to the parade, showers starting to wind down at that point during the afternoon. and if you just want a friday night out, well, we're talking about some fog starting to

for the most part, you should be just fine. i'm more worried about the potential to find an uber. i think it might be a little difficult with everyone in town. here's what you can expect on saturday at the women's march. 7:00 a.m. you're dealing with that thick fog. we're in the mid 40s. around 50 at 10:00 a.m. as the march is getting underway. still patchy fog at that point. by 1:00 a.m., we're at 55. that's not bad for this time of year here in the district. we would normally be talking about a high around 43. sunday, maybe some light showers around during the morning hours but we'll definitely be tracking some rain for the afternoon and evening hours. if you want to head out of town and go skiing this weekend, as we look to monday, it's rainy, windy and a high of only 44 degrees. on tuesday, still a little breezy but we'll have
