donald trump. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm erika goseles. >> no one was predicting crowds this enormous. the scenes here playing out across the country, and indeed around the world. we kick off our coverage of the historic women's march. >> reporter: the turnout so large it couldn't be contained on the national mall. surrounding streets jam packed. demonstrators from all over the country with signs reflecting concerns. on the main stage, celebrities like alicia keys, madonnmadonna promt promising to push back for women's rights. >> we will organize, we'll fight and we will march on until victory is won. >> one of us can be dismissed. two of us can be ignored, but together, we are a movement, and we

compassioned speeches from michael moore mocking a newspaper's heed line reading, trump's power. >> i don't think so. here's the power! here's the majority of america right here. >> reporter: as the audience cheered, moore ripped the headline in half. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: blocked away from the main stage, demonstrators waited patiently for the chance to march. the majority here, women mostly, but many men. in some cases, whole families stepping into the crush of people. >> people will have to start listening a little bit more when they see how many people came and how far we came. >> reporter: but in the end, the size of the crowd made it impossible to move along the pre-planned route, so some demonstrators headed home. most set in different d

creating a series of marches. >> there are so many people here so -- >> reporter: both organizers and demonstrators say this is only a success if people follow it up with action once they get home. in downtown washington. and developing right now, white house secretary sean spicer wrapped up his first press briefing since president trump took office. he had strong defensive words about coverage of the crowd size during yesterday's inauguration. >> president trump saying to him, it looked like a million and a half people had attended. just a few minutes ago, spicer questioned the reporting on the crowd's size. >> the inaugural proceedings were intentionally framed in a way to minimize the enormous support that it gathered on the national mall. this was the first time in our nation's history that floor coverings have been used to

that was highlighting places where people were not standing and grass was in the visual in the past. >> it doesn't provide an estimate of crowd sizes of any of the seventevents. today was an extremely busy day. >> we saw the pink hats, signs and cheering crowds on the way to the metro station in springfield. it's time for them to head back home. darcy spencer continues the coverage. how are crowds looking there? >> reporter: it is thinning out, but hundreds of thousands people attending the women's march, and they are trying to get back home pretty much at the same time. we are just outside the metro station. about an hour ago, it was packed out here. not so much now. let's show you the video that we shot right around 4:00 this afternoon as people were flooding inhe

here at metro centers and this is happening all across the system as people are trying to make their way back home, make their way to r.f.k. stadium to getn on the buses to head back home after a successful event today. down inside the station, you can see that the platforms were packed with people on both sides. the trains going in both directions and they were packing into the trains. some of them, you know, you couldn't fit any more people in there, so they had to wait for another train to come up. metro tweeting out earlier today, as of 4:00 this afternoon, nearly 600 riders -- that is huge. i don't know if it's record-breaking, but it has to be somewhere near there. that is not your typical saturday. let's hear from some of these riders had to say. what's it been like? >> coming here wasn't bad. the issue will be going home. >> it's been great. a lot of walking. i can't wait to look at my fit bit when we get back to the

and see how many steps we took. >> traffic was leaving downtown new york city to washington. it took seven hours. that's very unusual. >> r.f.k. stadium is where our bus is, so far transportation has been fine. slow coming in. yeah. >> reporter: and we're showing you video from this springfield metro station from earlier this morning. people were cheering as they were heading to the march and they were cheering on the platforms this afternoon. still very exhilarated from the experience that they had today at the women's march. so metro telling folks, don't try to go home right away if it's very crowded. go ahead and enjoy the downtown area for a while. delay your trip until things clear out. it is looking pretty good here at this time, and they are working on the road closures and getting everything opened back up. back to youe, erika. >> thank you. a whirlwind of

constitution avenue that was supposed to be open to traffic when a sea of peaceful protesters traveled near their car. >> we didn't know. >> reporter: they were not on the official route, including pennsylvania avenue where d.c. council members opened up the inauguration reviewing stand at city hall to cheer on the marchers. metro stations wiere jam packed today with more people today than president obama's second inauguration. this is more than law enforcement predicted there would be. pennsylvania avenue wasn't supposed to be part of the march. >> this wasn't just here. hundreds of thousands of people around the country, and even around the world, holding huge demonstrations. there was global. we'll take you to those rallies. plus we took a

the national mall to get reaction. check out our app by searching white board to see what that was all about. it may be the sign of a fresh start between president trump and the intelligence community. this afternoon, the president visited the cia headquarters, and he has repeatedly criticized them. he skipped many of his daily intelligence briefings, but he began his address today by calling the members of the intelligence community special. >> very, very few people could do the job that you do. i want to let you know i am so behind you. >> reporter: the president later talked about his inauguration. he claimed the immediate why was dishonest in its coverage of the crowd size. president trump also reminded the cia he had been on "time" magazine's cover more than a thousand years, and he felt young in his 30s. the cathedral hosted the

comes. >> trying to show you many of the sights and sounds of the women's march in washington, but this live image here comes from new york city where the signs of the crowd not only fill the streets, but these aerial views that we have had, filling the screen, and we have been seeing these crowds from fifth avenue up to 55th where if i'm not mistaken, it's a location of trump tower. >> certainly is, and that has been all afternoon with the sunsetting. congressman john lewis joins big crowds in atlanta this afternoon. they walked from the center for civil and human rights to the state capital. he boycotted trump's inauguration, saying he didn't consider him a quote, legitimate president. dozens of democratic lawmakers joined that after president trump attacked the civil rights icon on social media. many people were expected in chicago. this is the impressive size of

grew to roughly 250,000 people according to organizers. and due to the large record crowd numbers, the march transitioned to a rally in grant park in downtown chicago. hard for these people to put one foot in front of the other. look at the crowds in london today. thousands of people hitting the streets in support of the women's march in washington. more than 600 marches took place on every continent around the world. many people can be facing felony charges. prosecutors in d.c. are going through yesterday's arrests now. >> scott mcfarland spent the day in court as ten defendants faced the judge. >> reporter: those charges were announced just a short while ago here in court. at least ten people facing felony riot charges and there could be more later tonight.

protesters you saw outside moved inside to a basement hallway to await the news, but while outside, there were protests. there were musical performances, but no act romorimony or words exchanged. they will be back here for a hearing february 16th. scott mcfarland, news 4. and right now, currently our temperatures coming in in the 40s. 48 in washington. 46 up in frederick, and we'll have fog developing overnight, and it will be with us during the morning hours. i wouldn't be surprised if a fog advisory is issued once again 48 degrees tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. kind of hovering in the low 50s throughout the rest of the day. showers early tomorrow morning, but most of the midday hours are looking dry, but

we're at 53 degrees and tomorrow evening, 7:00 showers are likely. here's a chance of rain overnight. this area of rain moving toward us. and i think a lot of this activity in west virginia is going to fizzle out, but this rain here is moving out of the north carolina into virginia that could bring showers to the area. especially washington and areas to the south. i want to time it out with future weather. notice the rain around at midnight, and 7:00 a.m., we see the showers pulling out. notice it's cloudy. future weather brings the rain in early. you can see it has rain in ear by 11:00 a.m., noon. i think it's going to hold off by what i'm see a little bit longer. this rain starts to move in around 2:00, 3:00. so if you want to get something done, go with the midday hours. but in the late afternoon and evening, we will be tracking rain and then look at this. this is monday morning at 8:00 a.m. some heavy rain

really situated on inauguration day. i started my morning at the reviews stand and was later at the first top of the parade route, and what was really, like, a cold and dreary day, you know, rain in some parts of it, we had the opportunity to speak to so many people, jim, that were so excited to see this now, you know, billionaire businessman turned 45th president of the united states of america. one man came if from chicago, and said, i drove ten hours, packed my lunch, and we're staying with a friend, sleeping on the couch. we have never been to washington, d.c. before, and we didn't want to miss that inauguration. >> some people couldn't get in, and some people had to wait -- did you find a lot of people had to wait hours? >> absolutely. the security checkpoints were very, very heavy volume people through the security checkpoints, and we had, you know, people we ran into that were for the re

have not wanted to miss a single inauguration regardless of who i voted for. >> what a day it was for the history books. back to the top story. the women's march on washington, and the similar walks all over the country today. many participants have been tweeting out pictures of their boots. we're seeing a lot of captions like, quote, these boots were made for marching. >> we're also seeing a lot of pictures and the creative signs that people were bringing to the marches today. we saw the slogans from hillary clinton's campaign. i'm with her, and references to a comment that president trump made on the campaign trail about nasty women. >> and tomorrow, we're going to need rain boots and monday, too it sounds like. the heavy stuff. >> especially on monday. there is a chance for showers, and especially here in washington, and thick fog. around lunchtime, it's looking dry tomorrow, but

on a saturday night, millions march. the huge rallies led by women in washington, around the country and around the world. mostemanding president trump respect their rights and human rights. cia admission. the president visits the spy agency with nothing but praise for the intelligence community he once openly criticized. plus his executive order on obamacare and what it means. no way out. the tornado ripped through mississippi in the middle of the night killing at least four people and causing widespread destruction. one of the several tornadoes tearing through the south. and let's dance. the glitter and glamour of the first couple and those who came before them as they take the presidential stage.
