moment. >> first, as we hit the 10:00 hour, want to wish you a happy sunday. i'm adam tuss. >> i'm angie goff. we watched the sun come out then kind of disappear. >> the clouds roll in and we're talking about snow. lauryn, how did you change everything so fast? >> must be because i'm filling in for tom today. i changed everything so quickly so we'd have something to talk about. yes, we're talking about a little bit of snow. seeing flurry activity out there right now. we're going to start to see snow showers develop and possibly a few rain showers after about 4:00 p.m. today. 42 is that temperature right now. you step outside the beltway, we got temperatures in the 30s, even 20s in some spots. good munews is that wind not blowing today. and we're seeing a few flurries, a few rain showers along the chesapeake bay, where we have warmer water. it's changing over to some rain. a few flurries this morning. we're going to time out the snow later on for this evening, let you know what to expect. do think there could be issues monday morning. we'll go through it coming up in about 15 minutes. >> all right, lauryn.

breaking news across the country today as president trump issues travel ban executive orders. protesters have been gathering at airports for about the past 24 hours, raising signs and chanting in opposition to those bans. >> you're looking at footage from dulles international airport. that is where we find news 4's derrick ward. he joins us live this morning with the very latest. what are you seeing, derrick? >> reporter: well, you know what, this is a twist on the typical scene at the arrival area. you see passengers waiting. of course, you see loved ones here that would be here typically to greet some people with balloons. take a look over here now. you have lawyers. that's what it takes for some people to get into the u.s. now after that immigration crackdown went into effect. a judge did issue a temporary restraining order that affected 30, to 40, 50, 60 people held here at dulles. yesterday it was all about protests. the immediate reaction to this travel ban. later today, we expect another protest, about 1:00. the group casa

up here. of course, people want to come out and voice their opinions about this. they're doing that right now in some places. we've talked to one woman who was actually on her way to protest at the white house that felt she had to be here first. this is why she said she had to be here. >> welcome. we want you here. we want immigrants. this is a country of imimmigran. it's made rich by immigrants and diversity. >> reporter: again, at 1:00, another protest is expected here, and there are still some legal wrangling after the temporary restraining order was issued halting the detentions of several people who had been held at airports across the country. derrick ward, news 4. >> derrick, thank you. and just look at some of the video from other major airports. people have been chanting, holding up signs through the night in new york city, dallas, san francisco, chicago. according to a senior department of homeland security official who wished to remain anonymous, in the first 23 hours of president trump's order, 109 people were denied
10:04 am
173 others were denied boarding incoming flights from seven countries that you see on your screen there. here's the response from the department of homeland security about the order from the new york federal judge. quote, the department of homeland security will continue to enforce all of president trump's executive orders in a manner that ensures the safety and security of the american people. they also say that the u.s. government retained its right to revoke visas at any time if required for national security or for public safety. and the federal judge issued the order last night after lawyers for the american civil liberties union filed a court petition on behalf of families from the banned countries. >> we asked the judge to hold everything in place. we believe this executive order is clearly unlawful. but we said to the judge we understand she may need time to figure that out to block the removal of everyone nationwide who's been caught up in this unlawful executive
10:05 am
the government may not send anybody back until she finally rules everyone now who came is safe. >> well, we know that a lot of this might beconfusing. here are four things to know. first, president trump signed the executive order on friday. that puts a 120-day hold on entry of refugees to the u.s. and indefinitely suspends the entry of syrian refugees. the order also suspends entry for 90 days from iraq, syria, iran, syria, somalia, and yemen. now, second things get stickier. yesterday a federal judge in new york issued an emergency order temporarily barring the u.s. border agents from deporting pl
10:06 am
third, the judge's action is important because foreign-born u.s. residents who could have been barred from re-entering the united states under the immigration order have been allowed back into the country. finally, something we've been seeing at dulles international are people with temporary restraining order papers. they were granted by a u.s. district judge and require all permanent legal u.s. residents to be permitted lawyers, as is required by federal law. as we just saw and heard from derrick ward, there are several lawyers standing by at dulles international airport right now. adam? >> thank you, angie. and president trump says his immigration crackdown is not a muslim ban. he was asked about his executive order yesterday, specifically whether the government was prepared to implement it. here's what he said before many of the protests we saw erupted overnight. >> we're totally prepared to work it out very nicely. you see it at the airports. you see it all over. it's working out very nicely. we're going to have a very, very strict ban, and we're going to have extreme vetting, which we should have had in this

10:10 am
dozens of montgomery county firefighters have been working to battle these flames that broke out at this old middle school gym overnight. we know the fire at the old middle school is now contained, but they continue to look and put out hot spots. investigators are trying to figure out what caused this fire. fire crews say there was a partial collapse but no one was hurt. a newly revitalized and expanded middle school opened this school year. a murder-suicide in mcclain. police say a man fatally shot his wife and son before turning the gun on himself. they say the 52-year-old killed his wife shirley and their 16-year-old son james. police say a family member found the crime scene and called police on friday. police are still trying to find out what led to those killings. well, you might have to wake up a few minutes earlier tomorrow. lauryn is tracking how muh

well, protests have broken out at airports across the united states as many people are taking a stand against president trump's immigration crackdown.

to the protest in los angeles at l.a.x. >> reporter: walking out among protesters after ten hours on an immigration hold, this woman is grateful to be back home and free to leave l.a.x. >> it was really hard to stay there for ten hours and do nothing. at first they told us we have to go back to our country. >> reporter: she has been in the country for six years and has a green card. a massive crowd protesting for hours on her behalf at tom bradley international terminal. inside, more confusion and frustration as immigration attorneys continue to work for the release of possibly dozens detained under president trump's executive order. >> if they hadn't deported him by two hours, he would have been here. >> reporter: a federal ruling blocking those deportations came tonight, too late for this man's uncle from tehran.

held at l.a.x. more than 20 hours. >> we can't wait to talk to him and let him know that not only were we there with him in spirit, real l.a., real america was out front. he was not alone. >> reporter: frustration only grew as reports of a visa holding student was put back on a plane to iran tonight. no shortage of frustration out here, but there is growing comfort from what many say is a unifying protest. originally from iran, she has a message for president trump. >> would you do this to your children? muslims are good people. they're not terrorists. >> rick montanez reporting there. we've seen protest across the country. >> and we're expecting more here in the washington area. stay with us and the nbc washington app. even when we're off the air, we're always updating that, especially when it comes to weather. that's the number one reason why people go onne
10:16 am
we're seeing a few flurries right now. we're looking at a few flurries moving through the region. not going to amount to much. we're going to see more snow showers after about 4:00 p.m. there are also going to be more rain showers as well. we're dry for much of the day, especially the midday hours. not expecting much accumulation at all. we're talking about a dusting to an inch. but everybody knows how d.c. works. if we even get a little bit, that could be enough to kind of halt that morning commute. so again, there could be some delays tomorrow morning. we're going to continue to see scattered snow showers through the day tomorrow, mainly a breezy northwest wind. we're quiet into next week. temperatures, low 40s here inside the beltway. outside, we're looking at 30s right now. here is a few flurries that moved through the area. once we got over the chesapeake bay, they turned to a little bit of rain. again, the shenandoah valley, they were seeing a few flurries. that's not going to amount to much. vdot is out there treating the roads. temperatures are going to top out in the mid-40s today,hi
10:17 am
mark. as we get this rain and snow moving in after 4:00 or 5:00, it's just going to be wet for the evening. if you're driving around. monday morning, we could have slick spots as that road temperature drops to about 32 degrees. tomorrow night we're also looking just a little on the wet side. 5:00 p.m., rain showers to the south. a few snow showers there in the shenandoah valley. widely scattered throughout the evening, but after midnight, that temperature drops. this is where we could get a coating to an inch. that is it. a few snow showers around through the day tomorrow. those blustery northwest winds. temperatures tomorrow only in the upper 30s. it's going to feel like the 20s with those winds. again, most areas under an inch but still leave some time for that morning commute. if you're headed out to church or brunch, looking good. everybody do their homework, including teachers, do your lesson plans. maybe a few delays, but for the most part not going to see any cancellations. temperatures in the 30s for tomorrow. scattered snow showers throughout the day. windy on tuesday. we're around 50 on tuesday, maybe rain showers north. we are quiet
10:18 am
maybe a few snow showers sunday into monday of next weekend. >> all right. thank you very much, lauryn. well, president trump is facing a big backlash this morning for his executive order cracking down on immigration into the u.s. >> protests erupted at airports all over the country last night, denouncing the president's move. we want to bring in moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd to talk about this because we know that one lawsuit has already been filed. there's really a big debate over the legality of all this. we know in the past, presidents have been granted the power to decide who comes in and out of the country based off national security. >> there is, and i think look, it's the scope of the order that's in question here. he has some power. the question is did he go too far with the executive order. look, even mitch mcconnell has been quoted this morning as saying, you know, this is probably going to get decided in the courts to decide what laws apply, what is the scope of all this. if you look, for instance, the issue of green card holders. are they impacted or not? i'm going to
10:19 am
preview of my back and forth with reince priebus. hone honestly, it's unclear. he says going forward it won't apply but as far as department of homeland security is concerned, they've been told it does apply. so there's question there. here's the way it's most likely to play out. there will be multiple lawsuits at some point. some judge will issue a stay completely. there will be an appeal. we know where this is headed. it's going to take the supreme court to decide the power, just like with many of president obama's actions. some of them the courts would allow to go through, some they would say, you know what, supreme court needs to make this decision. >> what about the speed of all this? it even seemed to catch the department of homeland security off guard. >> this is where i feel as if the administration here doesn't really have a good answer on the speed. on one hand, they say there's a sense of urgency to this. if there's a sense of urgency, then they left off a bunch of countries that should have belonged on there. if it was so ur,
10:20 am
why did they wait until day seven? the other part is why wasn't there a 72-hour window, something like that, just to deal with the administration aspects of all this, administratively. you'll hear from reince priebus, he has an answer on that, that he believes is a good one when it comes to that. but it doesn't seem to -- i think they could have avoided a lot of this chaos had they at least built in a 48-hour window. >> this executive order is one that's dominating a lot of conversations, but we can't forget there were other executive orders taken, including giving a role to his chief strategist on the national security council. what strikes you about that move? >> look, i think that is something -- and this is sort of a side piece. if people want to understand who is among the chief brains behind the trump administration right now, it is steve bannon. this is steve bannon's world view that was in that inauguration speech. it's steve bannon's that's been
10:21 am
wording these executive orders. it was steve bannon that said, no, green card holders should be a part of this. so he is playing a huge role. he wants to be on the national security council. the president is bringing in politicaled advisers is not unusual. what was unusual is the decision to make the chairman of the joint chiefs and the director of national intelligence less than full-time members. now, the chief of staff, to me, said no, no, no, they can go to my meeting they want. okay. that does not seem to be what the order said. there was some confusion there. perhaps he's saying they can come to any meeting and that's going to be how they manage it. that, to me, was the more striking aspect. bringing on an aide, that doesn't surprise me. david axelrod would be there informally all the time. >> we always say you need more time. today you need more time. >> between mexico, the wall. >> phone calls with russia. there's a lot to talk about. >> the media, tim kaine
10:22 am
wait until you hear from tim kaine. he spent a lot of time on steve bannon. >> it's all coming up in ten minutes. chuck, thanks for stopping by. a reminder, you can see "meet the press" every sunday at 10:30. comes up here after "news 4 tod." ay
