we are dealing with just a little light snow chance early this morning. really right along the pennsylvania/maryland border here up in the mountains of west virginia. not many of those are going to live east of the mountains and i don't think we'll have to worry about that at all in and around the city. a few flurries around, farther north you live or travel the more likely to see a few flakes this morning. everybody gets a nice south to southeast wind later on this afternoon. it will make it a milder wind today. not much of a rain chance, but rain chances tomorrow generally 30% or less later on in the day. now, sunday keeping a little more close eye on sunday. still not a lot of confidence in exactly what we're going to be facing but it could be a rain/snow combination, particularly late sunday night into early monday. we'll worry about that as we get closer. for now, the details of the day come from sheena. >> temperatures, are cold this morning, the wind making them feel colder. everyone is feeling at or

there. beltway looking good. live shot here of the american he john bridge and you don't have any big problems there and 66, 95 should have been showing you 270 here. we'll do a live picture of 270 coming up in just a minute. developing this morning president trump not backing down over his controversial immigration executive order. late last night he fired the acting attorney general who refused to defend legal challenges against that order. it comes on top of another night of protests here in d.c. and around the country calling for an end to the ban. former acting attorney general sally yates is not convinced the executive order is lawful and told the justice department's attorneys not to defend it. >> president trump accused her of betrayal and insubordination and fired her. this morning the justice department has a new acting attorney general. dana boente, and he is likely to be in the job for only a few days now because his permanent replacement, senator jeff sessions could be confirmed by

>> justin finch is live at the department of justice with a deeper look at the new acting attorney general. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. boente stepped into that spot late last night. his first order was to overrule his predecessor who questioned the legality of the president trump's order restricting travel to the u.s. from those seven largely muslim nations. boente is a name that some may already know having served as u.s. attorney for the eastern virginia district. he was chosen for that post back in 2015 by president obama and he went on to make headlines for his corruption probe of former virginia governor whose conviction was later overturned by the u.s. supreme court. the 62-year-old has also served under republicans and democrats in his three decades with the department of justice. but his tenure as you mentioned will likely be brief serving only until jeff sessions steps in. he's up

soon as today and could be confirmed by the end of this week, which means should that happen in sequence that boente would only serve in that post as acting attorney general for only a matter of days, less than one week. back in to you. >> all right. justin finch live for us at the department of justice. with senator jeff sessions likely to been the attorney general here are a few things to know about him. he's been a senator since 1997. before that he served as the state's attorney general. sessions has faced accusations of racism. he was denied a federal judgeship in 1986 partly over accusations of racist remarks. sessions denied those allegations. coming up, we'll have the latest on the protests of president trump's immigration order and the nomination he's expected to make to the supreme court today. in prince george's county, police are searching for the man who walked into a gas station in district heights and shot and killed another man.

>> those are the cries from a heart broken family who showed up to that station on walters lane. police hope surveillance cameras may have captured what happened. this is the second homicide at that gas station in a little more than a year. police do not think that they're connected. five minutes after the hour. canadian prime minister is among more than 1,000 people honoring the victims of a mass shooting. you're looking at video from a growing vigil in quebec city. six people were killed inside a mosque there the other night. they were shot while they were praying. 17 other people were hurt. we told you two people were detained in this case. now police believe only one was the shooter. they charged 27-year-old alexandre bissonnette with six counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. he will appear in court next month. you may notice extra police officers in several mosques in fairfax county. the police department tweeted it is standing strong with the

the tweet used the hash tag engagement and building trust. police are asking for tip if you notice suspicious activity. this 15-year-old girl is missing from germantown. they're worried about her physical and emotional welfare. they say she could be in the district. she has black hair and brown eyes. if you've seen her call police. >> and we thought this next story was something parents in fairfax county needed to know about. there has been a case of whooping cough reported in the school district. an e-mail went out to parents at the secondary school yesterday suggesting they monitor their children for the illness. they also want to make sure all the immunizations are up to date. it's a bacterial disease that begins with cold symptoms and can be treated with antibiotics. a wild bob cat is very likely wandering the

really about gaithersburg northbound today. up across the northern parts of the valley, so couldn't rule out a little snow flake or two early this morning. our computer model carries any chance for snow flakes out of here before 8:00 in the morning. then this afternoon a mix of clouds and sunshine around, but noticeably breezier for today. as a result, a little bit of a windchill to deal with early this morning. temperatures in the 20s and low 30s but the feels like factors are down in the teens and 20s this morning. feels like 19 in gaithersburg and 27 in culpepper. know you'll need to layer up. chilly here through the morning hours but easily get temperatures in the low 50s this afternoon. it will be quite breezy. then for tomorrow, mostly cloudy and maybe a drop or two tomorrow. not enough to post a percentage on there. trending cooler as we finish out the weekend and a cold start to the weekend. maybe a little chance of

>> a scary encounter for people taking the bus home in kansas city, a man attacked a female bus driver. you heard her scream for help and that's when a passenger started beating the attacker with his cane. he hit the man so hard that he broke the cane on his back. the bus driver was able to run off and call police. the attacker was arrested. the transit authority says they are looking for the good samaritan so they can replace his cane for him. police hope that some newly released surveillance images will help track down a man who kidnapped a georgetown suntuden. he forced the student into the car and tried to make him withdraw cash and make large purchases. this happened last thursday afternoon. this all started near 34th and o street. they say this is the vehicle that the kidnapper was driving.

metro area but northwest of the washington area. a chance of light snow showers here this morning. southerly winds will increase this afternoon. that will help turn it into a mild stretch of weather. we'll start cooling back down again tomorrow. turning downright cold and keeping a close eye on sunday afternoon into sunday night. there could be a little rain/snow combination we need to be concerning ourselves with so we'll be giving you the whole ten-day forecast at 5:51. the other thing to know about is winds could get gusty at times. southwest winds could gust 30 to 40 miles per hour particularly in the higher elevations. as far as temperatures let's go over to sheena and find out more about the day that way. >> it is a cold start to the morning. feeling below freezing through the area for really everybody and we're also watching some snow flakes on the radar. here is a look at that radar now. we've been watching this area of snow up north along the pennsylvania/maryland border and we're going to keep watching it.

to all d.c. charter schools tomorrow. renting out your home on airbnb and other online sites could come with new restrictions in the district. a council member will unveil a bill today to renting out one unit at a time. it also calls for that rental to be in the host's permanent home. some law machers in annapolis are trying to pave the way to make maryland the tenth jurisdiction to legalize recreational marijuana. two different measures, one would make it legal for adults over 21 and regulate production similar to alcohol. the other would put taxes on nonmedical marijuana. marijuana is already decriminalized in maryland. eight states in the district have some form of legal recreational weed. coming up on 5:34 and covering prince george's county, the man police say

the hospital this morning. he shot himself twice trying to run away from them sunday morning. they say earlier that day he killed his bosses at blue sunday bar and grill in bowie. sources tell us the shooting was a result of a dispute over money. people who work at that restaurant are still in disbelief. >> i've been shaking all day. i couldn't sleep last night. i know a lot of other people couldn't sleep, so it's hard. >> police believe that he worked as a bartender at the newly opened restaurant. he is expected to survive and be charged. a man is dead, his body found inside an apartment building in arlington county and now police are trying to figure out what happened. someone called police to the apartment on 7th road south yesterday afternoon. officers found the 57-year-old dead inside. they say his death is suspicious, but they're not giving out many more details. they interviewed at least two witnesses. those two are said to be cooperating and there is no ea

the latest decision by the boy scouts of america could create some controversy. they will allow transgender children who identify as boys to enroll in boys programs. the organization previously relied on the gender listed on the child's birth certificate. ten people will begin a marathon contest to win a new car at the washington auto show. they have to keep their hands on this car until february 5th at noon. the winner will drive off in a hyundai tucson. if there's more than one person left standing at noon on the 5th the winner will be decided by a random key drawing. >> this is harder than it sounds. it really is. you have to stay so focused. you move your weight off the car, you're out. >> both hands, right? i don't know if i could do it. >> good luck. >> well, if you are in the other room cooking maybe breakfast right now, take a look at the current temperatures outside. most of

transit systems around the country, take a look at this list here. metro's fares are highlighted in yellow and while the system's base fare is similar to other cities, metro has the second highest max fare. take a look. it's close to $6. san francisco bart system is higher at more than $7 for that max fare. in canada they are honoring the victims of a mass shooting inside a mosque. overnight the prime minister visited this vigil in quebec city. more than a thousand people have gone there. they placed candles and signs to remember the six people who died. those victims were shot during evening prayers. we're learning more about them as well. some were fathers, one was a businessman, another a university professor. a 27-year-old college student was charged in this attack, alexandre bissonnette. he appeared in a hearing yesterday and will be back in court in three weeks. his peers described him as a loner with anti immigrant
