trump's first 100 days where we are now at the beginning of what could be a big battle over a supreme court nominee. >> last night the president nominated neil gorsuch to replace scalia. >> the qualifications of judge gorsuch are beyond dispute. he is the man of our country and a man who our country really needs and needs badly to ensure the rule of law and the rule of justice. >> now, in the judge's remarks gorsuch promised to uphold the same principles as the conservative late scalia. >> he was a lion of the law. agree or disagree with him, all of his colleagues on the bench share his wisdom and his humor. >> senate democrats already lining up in opposition to this nomination. senate minority leader chuck schumer saying last night that approving gorsuch will require 60 votes. as soon as president trump

erupted outside of the supreme court. people carrying signs that say oppose gorsuch voiced their opposition against the president's pick. civil rights, human rights and gun violence groups are questioning gorsuch's record on gun rights, religious freedom and police brutality. here's a closer look at neil gorsuch's background. he's a 49-year-old denver native. he attended georgetown prep while his mother led the environmental protection agency under president ray deagareagan. he's also a graduate of harvard law school, one of his classmates there, former president barack obama but he also has ties to the current supreme court. he was a clerk for anthony kennedy before going to oxford for a philosophy degree. if confirmed gorsuch would not change the makeup of the court very much since he would be replacing justice scalia who was al

>> much more ahead on the nomination of neil gorsuch. we'll check in with edward lawrence on capitol hill for a look at the chances for his confirmation. maryland democrats will be watching to see whether governor larry hogan takes a stand on any trump administration policies today. the republican governor is set to gave his third state of the state address at noon. he has not taken public positions on any of the president's policy so far. his aides say the speech will focus on his agenda which could include issues such as tax credits or his environmental plans. getting word about raids in germany with a new arrest. >> what's going on here? >> we're talking about a massive raid, one that was very, very widespread. you mentioned that arrest. it's of a man suspected of trying to coordinate and plan attacks. take a look at this video we got. this is after wards. more than 1,000 soldiers we know involved in this huge r

dozens of homes, businesses and mosques. the 36-year-old that they arrested is suspected of recruiting for isis they said in germany since 2015. he was taken into custody. police now accusing him of creating a network of supporters that plans to carry out more attacks within that country. all authorities are now investigating 16 suspects, some as young as 16, we're told. people are still on edge after that attack back in december at that christmas market where 12 people were killed. back to you. thank you. new this morning brand new crash tests for the hybrid and electric cars you drive. these new safety ratings come from the insurance institute for highway safety. it looked at four cars, two of them the chevy volt and the prius, both received top safety picks plus ratings. that is the best possible result and it means they received good

case anymore. so let's take you back to the beginning. we're talking mid january. and her mom wakes up to find that the teen and the baby are no longer in the house. so she calls police, she files a missing persons report. a family friend that we spoke to says the pair left with nothing on but their pajamas. they didn't take anything with them. fast forward now two weeks. no phone calls, no sightings, nothing. and the one thing they do know, the baby's father, an 18-year-old is out of sight and police now think this has turned dangerous. >> as time has passed we're starting to believe that she might have left out of fear of the father. we're learning that there might have been some issues of contention between them and also too, you know, we believe that he has some gang ties. >> reporter: they just don't know if that plays a role

they just don't think it adds anything good. we're going to keep updating you on this story. we're live in springfield this morning. back to you. 5:16 now. the woman at the center of that discredited rolling stone article about a gang rape at uva is back in the headlines. a newspaper reports a judge is ordering the woman known as jackie to turn over documents related to that 2014 article. jackie says she should not have to provide those materials. the fraternity named in the article is suing rolling stone for defamation. this is the third lawsuit to emerge from the debungt article. metro is investigating why another one of its trains failed to stop at a red signal. this happened just before 11:00 yesterday morning. no passengers were on board at the time. metro says the train stopped a few car lengths beyond the signal. those red signal violations

unconstitutional and un-american. virginia senators tim kaine and mark warner are cosponsoring a bill to rescind the executive order saying it does not reflect american values. more fallout from an i-team investigation. a bill requiring reporting of misconduct more quickly is moving to the general assembly. fairfax public schools waited years before working to revoke the licenses of teachers who admitted to sexual misconduct. a viewing of the i-team investigation was held. members then voted to require school districts to formally report teachers suspected of illicit befave your havior to s officials within ten days. arlington police have arrested 28-year-old heber and charged him with killing his roommate. they say they got into

don't know whether anyone was hurt in this crash or how it happened but we do have calls out to police right now. you can see here from the video, the crash caused a whole lot of damage to the house and the car. when we checked out the scene this morning police and firefighters were no longer there. well, if your commute takes you across the key bridge there are major repairs that might affect your drive. >> those repairs are expected to take a couple of years to complete. >> justin finch is live with a look at why that bridge is getting this facelift. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. we're talking about two years of repairs here. the key bridge has linked georgetown and linking thousands of passengers a day. no surprise it's due for a tuneup here. the repairs started back in september and became more visible with scaffolding up and crews hard at work. barges are being brought in to reach those

spots. as to what's getting fixed here, concrete patches and about 2,100 feet of concrete cracks. they underscore the bridge may be old here, but it's also strong. >> no risk of the bridge falling. fortunately, these are cosmetic repairs. it's the surface. >> reporter: and looking live here at the key bridge, by fall crews will shore up the bridge walls and also repaint the iron fencing here so you may see some lane closures in short order. back in to you. well, you know driving in our area isn't always fun or easy and this morning we're learning it can also be dangerous. d.c. received the highest ranking in our area in a new highway safety report card that's out. advocates for highway and auto safety gave us a green for having a lot of safety rules in place. the group gave maryland a yellow ranking. tougher seatlt

ranked in the bottom of our area getting a red ranking. advocates say it needs to boost the number of highway safety laws especially when it comes to cell phones and booster seats. a lot of people hate this when people are driving slowly in the fast lane and now it could cost you big bucks in virginia. >> the house of delegates have approved legislation that would add a $250 fine for people who block that left lane. police can pull you over for driving too slowly but there's no real penalty for it. lawmakers hope this fine will encourage drivers to move over and in turn cut down on road rage incidents. the bill still needs approval in the senate though. if you drive a hybrid car, some good news this morning about your safety behind the wheel. the insurance institute for highway safety just released brand new ratings for hybrid and electric cars. two cars, both hybrids received a rating of top safety pic

the prius plus. they received good scores in all five categories measured by iihs. two other cars, the bmwi 3 and the tesla model s received good scores in only four of the five categories. a huge theft in an apartment building in d.c. at least a dozen or more bikes were snatched from a secure locker over the weekend. photos show multiple bikes missing from inside that bike cage sunday morning. you can see some broken cut locks here lying on the ground. one renter says he is surprised this could happen. >> everything was cut and just -- they didn't even leave any parts of my lock so i don't know how many they did actually take. >> now, d.c. police are still investigating how these bikes were stolen. no surveillance cameras in that storage camera. this is in the mount vernon square area but they plan to take another look at cameras from the property. federal prosecutor

good morning. we saw some of this play out yesterday in senator jeff sessions' hearing for attorney general. what's likely to happen today? >> reporter: it played out in dramatic fashion actually. democrats trying to filibuster the nominees that are coming up now. in fact, senator jeff sessions was waiting for a vote in the committee to go to the full senate there. what happened is democrats actually invoked the two-hour rule where the committee cannot last longer than two hours once the senate is in session. they ended up speaking forever on the stage there taking up all of the time. in essence filibustering and then had to adjourn. so at 10:30 today we'll probably expect the same to go on. republicans are going to try and maneuver around that in order to get a vote in the committee and get jeff sessions moved on to the full senate. >> and rex tillerson's nomination for secretary of state likely to come to a full vote today too. we expect he'll be confirmed? >> reporter: you know, this one is going to be a tough one. we do expect he's g

confirmed. there are 52 senate republicans but rex tillerson has had some criticism about his ties over russia. so it might be a tight vote, but again, republicans are still the majority. >> all right. thank you. 38 degrees now outside our studios here in upper northwest d.c. another chilly start, but dry. >> yes. >> not too windy. >> not too windy at all and it will be dry, maybe a strength sprinkle but i think it's going to be a nice day. >> well, good. >> and the weekend will feel like winter. >> i like how you slipped that in there. >> i tried at least. nonchalantly, that's the way to go. today back into the 40s and we're already climbing in the district. the wind not bad. not much wind out there north west at 5 miles per hour but as we go through the day today, we will be warming up a little bit above normal for this time of the year, but still a cool afternoon. 37 degrees in gaithersburg.

but then you go to leesburg, 43 and down to fredericksburg 47. and quantico at 32 degrees. here is what's going to happen so i mentioned it's going to feel like winter this weekend. today we'll be close to 50. tomorrow closer to normal. friday 43 and then we're in the upper 30s on saturday. and that will be the case as we go into sunday. still on the cold side, but chance of some rain and snow showers too. locally we're dry. area of moisture off to the west will provide sprinkles by midday. clouds around today, we're dry tomorrow, we're dry friday. we're dry saturday and then by sunday there's that chance i was mentioning of some rain and snow starting to approach the area. for your super bowl sunday it looks like so far it's a chance we'll keep watching it but any accumulation would be on the lighter side, if any, but again it's something we'll be updating as we go through the rest of this week and then next week, look at that. 60 degree temperatures out there.

roadways out there. >> good morning. so a new problem, all lanes shut down here this is 108 just north of sundown road there where you hit griffith road. all lanes shut down both directions right now. we are starting to see some delays. chopper 4 is on the way to show us what's going on from above. broken down vehicle there in the right lane if it hangs around. going to start causing some delays. eastbound 66, the ramp here to 15, crash, car versus deer this morning. northbound 110 at memorial bridge, they have gotten that oversized truck out of the way. >> all right. thank you. doctors are warning about potential dangers to your health if you use pills to help you sleep. according to a new survey, many people take those pills more than they should. 18% of people who took over the counter sleep aids told consumer reports they did so every day. 41% said they used those pills for a year or more. doctors say
