terms of setting the stage for what will be a tremendous debate. and yes, it will be all hands on deck trying to get this person confirmed as it always is for a supreme court nominee. >> do you think democrats will be able to put ideaological and separate it from personal anger? >> i don't think they will be able to do that but they should really work very hard. i think they should see this as a constitutional responsibility rather than a political opportunity. this is a constitutional opportunity that do what's best for the country. president obama clearly -- when he nominated a nominee to the supreme court, there were republicans that thought it was a good thing to do and they wanted to see the process go forward. it didn't go ford. that's behind us. it wasn't done politically it was done at the end of a term. that's not an unusual thing to have happen. i can remember when the democrats were calling for

someone on the supreme court because there was an election coming up. i think the process should be serious. i'm glad the judge is going to go up to capitol hill and starting his visits. the process is deliberative, slow. you have to develop personal relationships and answer questions. i hope it can be done respectfully. i think it's an outstanding choice. it's a choice from the future, not the past. i think it should be the democrats should give the president the benefit of a doubt and do their responsibility as senators. >> it's going to take 60 votes for confirmation. that means the republicans have to get eight democrats to come across. they'll target red state democrats who are facing reelection. do you think it's possible if this goes badly that mitch mcconnell will do away with the 60 vote threshold and go to a simple majority. >> i'm hoping the senators will re

is not to play partisan politics but to do the right thing. if that does happen, i'm confident there will be 60 votes to allow the nomination to go forward. if they don't. if politics is going to rule the day, then i do think the republicans should say, we're going to take advantage of the so-called nuclear option and change the rules. the nuclear option is not one i would invite but it's one the republicans should have in the wings if they need it. this shouldn't be a partisan issue. this is not politics. >> think about the position that puts mitch mcconnell in. if he goes to the nuclear option he's guaranteeing four years of war in washington if he doesn't, he faces the wrath of president trump. >> well, i'm hoping president trump will not exhibit wrath on the republican leader in the senate. mitch mcconnell has a tough job to do to lead the senate and do it on behalf of the president. b

discussion group, they go around the circle or the room. they should their name and their pronoun. and so i thought, we're seeing something transformational happening here. i went to yale, i talked to some young students there about the new language of gender, the's an entirely new vocabulary and i crisscrossed the country. >> you look at the science side of this as well. let's talk about the some of the conversations. you talked to the parents of i think a 4-year-old. >> 5-year-old. >> yeah. born as a boy. who i think at four said to them in my heart and my brain i'm a girl. >> that's right. >> a lot of people hear stories like that of a child at such a young age and they say it's too early to know. >> i know. in fact, i really try today put myself in the shoes of people who weren't that familiar with the topic. and i visited with the wonderful family in washington, d.c. and their son did at four say i'm a girl in my heart and my

no one understands the struggle that they go through. and i asked how does somebody know when certainty they feel this way. they get a lot of professional help. they know their child. the fact of the matter is, you know, some kids just feel that way. it's a social transition, by the way. they're not doing surgery or any kind of sort of pharmaceutical intervention in this case. but they see their child completely change when their gender is affirmed. 40%, matt, of transgender people attempt or commit suicide. so this is a matter of life and death for these families. >> let me go from a 5-year-old boy to a couple. they've been married for 45 years, linda's husband, bill, tells her he's transgender and now goes by kate. yes, ma' >saonw to ll you this, but all my life i believed i'm a woman and i'm

female. and that i am transgendered. i looked at her and she started crying. >> the reason why i was crying was more out of sadness for the struggle. >> people have a hard time in general understanding what it's like to be transgender. and i think they have a hard time, linda, understanding what it's like to be a partner of someone who decides to transition. >> sure. >> they are like, wait. you all are staying together? >> yes. >> how do you explain it to them? >> well, the way i kind of looked at it is that we all are given challenges in life. and this is one challenge that i felt that i could deal with. >> it's an extraordinary statement. to say challenges, that's an almost an understatement. >> i think it took linda some time. i've been fascinated when i hear about the partners remaining as a couple. and i thought they were -- they're an extraordi

but she prayed a lot about it. and, you know, i think for those of us of our age who grew up in a very strict binary construct, it's hard for us to wrap our heads around it. but, you know, they are really happy. they're in love. and their children are also very supportive. >> you know, i think a lot of us think of caitlyn jenner and what she did in the last couple of years. we're also of an age where we remember some of the pioneers in this area. >> you'd get a kick out of this. i went golfing with renee richards and she is the tennis legend who was on the front lines of this. she got gender confirmation surgery many years ago. and i talked to renee and a young transmodel actor. what's interesting is there's such a generational divide here. millenials, 50% of them believe that gender is on a spectrum. so to see
