11:19 am
>> the mediterranean diet is a diet where you're limiting processed foods and sugars. it's a diet that is rich in protein and you're having lots of leafy vegetables and eggs and olive oil, et cetera. this is a diet that's been shown to be helpful for numerous health issues, including heart health. now there's more studies, including this one showing benefits for mental health as well. >> tell us about the study. >> this was a relatively small study, 70 people. 35 in each group. the treatment group went and saw a nutritionist every week for serve weeks and followed with their diet and given nutritional advice to get on this mediterranean style diet. the other group met with somebody and played checkers or chess. all were suffering with depression prior to being in one of these two treem arms. what they found, the group that went on the med ter rare yan diet, one

remission, which is a big deal. the group that just got the social therapy so to speak, only 8% of those people got better. now the problem is this was not a perfect study because many of the patients in each arm of the study were on anti-depressants. you can't completely isolate it and attribute it to the dietary changes but in study does provide more evidence to back up what we've seen. diet makes a difference. >> there's a definite connection between what you eat and not just your physical health but mental health. >> you eat garbage, you're going to feel like garbage. the reason behind this particular diet helping is because of three things. number one, when you're eating this way you're increasing omega 3 fatty acids and balancing the bio -- >> exactly. >> and decreasing sugar, which is pro inflammatory and we know for many people with depression, it's in part a prm

11:22 am
>> that was my next question. this is not something you replace with proper treatment and medical care but this is a first step towards finding a wholistic approach to feeling better about life and yourself? >> absolutely. i say to people, this is a lot like other fields in medicine. i believe that so many of the things that people are getting treated for, obesity, high blood pressure, type ii diabetes, many have a behavioral component to them. if you fix the underlying behaviors, generally it's diet and exercise, you're going to get healthier. >> dr. joshua weiner, thanks as always for that good advice. >> we have details on a medical study that's sure to gain a lot of interest. the local university recruiting volunteers to

11:37 am
absorbed but that's a good thing because the fragments bind to cholesterol and it could help to flush some of it out of your system so it doesn't land in arteries. pick up some apples. also, lentils rock. they are convenient, they are budget friendly but they are also packed with protein and fiber. again, fiber helps to flush out extra cholesterol. the other cool thing about lentils, you serve them up at the meal in place of a fatty meat, you're saving your body from the saturated fat you would get from fatty meat and getting the protein and fiber from the lentils, like a win-win for your arteries. avocados fabulous and they are creamy and luxurious and everybody loves the taste but they also have a special type of monounsaturated fat that helps to increase the good cholesterol. so it has fiber to low

good cholesterol so if you eat avocados, no matter how you eat them and enjoy them, in moderation, of course, you can really enjoy your entire cholesterol profile. another one is oats. oatmeal never goes out of style and oats have a special soluble fiber. it's like a tongue twister and it creates a gel within your system and it's like a cholesterol magnet. so it could help to escort some of the cholesterol out of your body as well. it doesn't have to be for breakfast if a bowl of oatmeal. i like to pulse rolled oats in the food processor and then you can use that for muffins and use it for pancake batter. i also roll those in smoothies and grinds right up, you get this thick luscious smoothy. so you really want to experiment with oats and the last food is ia
