the roadway, take a look at these backups. right now, it's about a mile and a half and it is growing quickly. this is a tractor-trailer that lost some fuel. had a spill there. that's the problem and why that right lane is blocked. branch avenue, we have that situation hanging around there. 66 is fine. 95 is fine. no big worries. taking a look at 270, you can see you're slow here from the clarksburg area about down to germantown or through germantown, i should say. rockville then gets pretty clear this morning. we'll take a look at travel times, coming up. >> thank you, melissa. it is 6:02. and we're following breaking news right now in dmrar. two employees held hostage at a prison. we're looking at live pictures from the james t. vaughn correctional facility. it looks quiet now, but it is locked down. >> police are trying to negotiate to get those people freed at this point.

>> this hostage situation has been going on for more than 18 hours now. two corrections officers are still being held hostage at this hour. two others were released yesterday, including one who was treated for nonlife threatening injuries. overnight, more inmates were released and moved out of the building where this is happening. the situation started just after 10:30 yesterday morning. and through family members inmates made their demands known to a local newspaper. among their concerns, their treatment in the facility and access to rehabilitation. so for now, the standoff continues. the delaware governor was here last night helping out with this hostage negotiation. negotiators are also. a lot of the workers live around this area, so of course we've been talking with neighbors who say they are just hoping and praying for the safe return of these two correctional officers. now back to you. coming up on 4 minutes after the hour and developing this morning, d.c. police are

fired shots into an suv. you can see the car here on your screen now. police say the shooting happened last night near the corner of eastern avenue and hunt place in northeast. the man inside that suv was killed. a woman was also shot. she will survive. we want you to see this now.. we have brand new video of a kidnapping suspect. take a look. police tell us the man you see here in the dark suit is accused of kidnapping a georgetown student one week ago. >> justin finch is live with more details on this. justin, what can you tell us? >> hey there, good morning. this video gives us and police our best look yet. this kidnapping suspect, he is wanted for picking up that georgetown student on 34th and "o" streets north and west last week in broad daylight. off this corner here. also, police say the motive here appears to be for cash. now, the video comes from stops the suspects and victim made at td and sun trust banks off thursday in the tinley town and

suspect pacing behind the victim as he franticly fusses with that keypad. the transactions did not go through and the suspect did let that georgetown student go. we have one more although at that suspect. he's wearing a black suit, black shirt, black shoes and gray tie. now, he was last seen driving a white chevy crossover suv. police say if you know him or that car, to give him a call. we're live in georgetown, i'm justin finch, news 4. back in to you. let's go to the live desk with some breaking news. >> someone just tried to rob a cvs. what happens, adam? >> that's right. an attempted robbery of a cvs store in the 1200 block of virginia avenue. police showed up about 4:15 this morning. they have a suspect in custody. this comes after a string of drugstore robberies in montgomery county. although it's now clear if these are all connected.

this is video of a recent robbery at the cvs store in bethesda. in that indicates, the man actually assaulted a clerk. we are working to find out if there is a connection between these robberies and the attempted robbery in silver spring today. we'll bring you any information when we have it. back to you. also developing right no now, a lockdown at the university of california at berkeley is now over after some violent protests. >> if you take a look here, these protesters fought with police overnight. this is all because the school invited a controversial speaker. milo from the bright part news. >> police say the protests were peaceful until about 150 people enmass started all this violence. that talk was canceled. several hundred demonstrators showed up for a rally at reagan national airport last night protesting president trump's executive order on immigration. protesters say even

reagan, they wanted to demonstrate at the airport used most by members of congress. >> i'm not going to -- i'm not going to comment on a conversation between myself and the president of the united states. other than what we have said publicly and you can surely understand the reasons for that. >> that is australian prime minister malcolm turnbull being tight lipped about his conversation with president trump over the weekend. the two leaders talked about a deal maik made by the obama administration that would allow the u.s. to take in over 1200 refugees from the detention center. president trump cut short that call. turnbull wouldn't confirm that, but told him the u.s. would continue with the agreement. >> more now on the president's first 1 hurn days the today, we are watching for what president trump says at the national prayer

it is his first time speaking at the event as president. the goal of the breakfast is to serve as a break in the middle of partisan battle. 3,000 people from 130 countries are spec'd to attend. and there is a big question this morning on whether education secretary nominee betsy did he vos is in danger of not being confirmed. two republicans announced yesterday that they cannot support her nom nation. that would make it a 50/50 tie. if it stays 50/50, then vice president mike pence spec'd to break the tie in her favor. but if one more republican votes no, she will not be confirmed. secretary of state rex tillerson was confirmed by the full senate yesterday. the vote was mostly along party lines. his confirmation means six of the president's cabinet nominees have been confirmed. more than 10 nominees are awaiting approval. the cat came back. it just couldn't stay away been we're talking ollie the bobcat returning to the national zoo.

see here. about ten of the injured were said to be in critical condition. that factory makes prefabricated house parts for export to japan. back to you guys. a family in chesapeake, virginia, is demanding answers about why a 60-year-old man was killed while playing pokemon go. they say that man what a retiree and was in his car.. a security guard approached him and fired through a windshield. it's not clear why. chen was playing pokemon go which he used to interact with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews. no one has been charged in this case so far. right now, police are investigating an accident of a dump truck that hit and killed a man in an elementary school. the truck was backing up in silver spring when it hit and killed the man who was using a walker. so drivers stayed on the scene. police haven't released the victim's name, but believe he was in his

to vandalizing a historic schoolhouse in ashburg, virginia. these teen spray painted vulgar messages on that schoolhouse last september. it became clear na none of them knew the significance of what they were spray painting. as punishment, they're required to write a series of book reports and visit the u.s. holocaust museum and american history museum. the smithsonian is putting on various special programs and events to commemorate its first black history month. it was a screening last night of a film called "i am fought your negro." apparently a very powerful film and so much work that he did in terms of civil rights early on. >> an opportunity to learn something there. 6:17 right now. we look for opportunities to learn from professor bell this morning. >> and it's just important to know on groundhog day that if you

this is happening in dickerson, maryland, in montgomery county. dozens of firefighters showed up, but there's no hydrants there. everyone made it out of that house okay. death of a mother of four is prompting the city of alexandria to make some immediate changes to its roads. rose cruz die last month crossing the street at mt. vernon avenue and west glebe road. following her death, the city adopted the vision zero plan. this aims to eliminate deadly traffic accidents. this week, road crews started adding pedestrian signs and changing traffic signals at that intersection where cruz died. >> we think it's important to have a bold goal. we think that because this is such a public health concern that we need to throw everything we can at it. >> i think anything they're doing to improve the safety around here with various intersections is only a plus. >> in 2016, there were four bed deaths and 242

rally at reagan national airport last night. protesting president trump's executive order barring new refugees. protesters said they wanted to demonstrate at this airport, the one that is used most by members of congress. and there is a battle brewing between congress and d.c. over the death with dignity bill. utah republican congressman jason chaffitz says his committee will vote today to kill that bill. democrats admit they don't have the votes in the house, but they plan on lobbying the city to block this measure. it is now 6:50 and montgomery county police are investigating a robbery at a cvs on georgia avenue in silver spring. police say they have one person in custody. this morning, the robbery comes after a string of drugstore robberies in montgomery county over the past two weeks. it's not clear whether they're connected. police are scouring the area for the man who shot someone on the d.c. maryland line. police say someone fired into a car last night neare
