a cold day across our region today. more cold tomorrow and then something else. we've got the forecast. news4 at 4:00 starts now. firefighters managed to get that massive blaze under control at a trash recycling center but right now you are tit's still s. >> this is what it looked like last night. huge flames lit up the sky. it was too dangerous for firefighters to go inside. this is what it looks like right now. a live picture from chopper 4. as you can see the damage -- extensive doesn't even begin to describe it. do they have any word on a possible cause, chris? >> reporter: well, i spoke to fire chief richie

he tells me it will take quite a quite to determine the cause of this fire. he tells me they have to dig down deep into the ashes of the solid waste and figure out burn patterns. it could have been batteries or ashes that were thrown out in the trash, he says. he adds it's going to be a difficult process. the massive blaze began just after 9:00 last night in lorton, var var. fires in this area can usually be put out with water. >> this one got out of control and it's just we're not exactly sure why. we're doing an investigation. >> reporter: it took 60 fairfax county firefighters to bring the flames under control. >> fortunately with the number of workers that were in the building at the time of the incident, no one was injured,

none of our firefighters are injured. >> reporter: the chief says it will take a few days to put the fire out completely and even longer to determine its cause. today the plant is still smou smoldering. smoke drips into nearby neighbors and communities. >> are you monostoitoring the a quality? >> reporter: and you were told? >> both answers were air quality was fine. there was no concerns right now and that they had monitors out there and they were going to maintain those there until they got the situation fully under control. >> reporter: but some residents tell me they are having a hard time. >> i get asthma when i get around smoke and this has been really bad for me. >> reporter: now, you're looking live at pictures from chopper 4 over the

virginia. we have seen small pockets of flames still. they are still working to put out this fire. exactly how long it will last and what it means to this community, we will have more answers for you coming up on news4 ahead at 5:00. there was a similar fire a couple months ago in maryland at an incinerator plant in dickerson. even after firefighters got it contained the embers continued to smolder for several days. officials warned nearby neighbors with breathing problems that they should probably stay indoors. president trump capping his second week in office with a get-away to his mar-a-lago estate in florida.

president said iran is, quote, not behaving after signing two orders to weaken obama era financial regulations. today the trump administration announced new sanctions that target iran's ballistic missile program. on a possible military response, white house spokesman sean spicer said he thinks the sanctions will be very strong but that nothing is off the table. president trump also responded to this morning's attack outside the louvre museum in paris. he tweeted that americans need to get smart in light of the incident. police shot and wounded that suspect. a top aide to mr. trump admits she misspoke as she attempted to defend the president's travel ban. her interview spawned scores of

scathing corrections and jokes. >> president obama had a six month ban on the iraqi refugee program after two iraqis came here, were radicalized and were the masterminds behind the bowling green massacre. it didn't get covered. >> it didn't get happened because it never happened. today conway tweeted that she meant to say terrorist not massacre. she also linked to the story about two iraqi citizens who were actually living in bowling green, kentucky. 60,000 visas have been revoked in a single week. the number came to light in a courtroom in virginia where a federal judge allowed the state to join a lawsuit that's challenging that immigration order. julie carey was in the courtroom

argued the ban is harming college students and faculty. >> reporter: that was just one revelation that came out of today's hearing. we also learned that at least 60,000 people who were outside of this country right now have had their visas revoked as a result of the trump administration executive order. these were people who were holding visas poised to come into this country. in court arguments a lawyer representing the virginia attorney general told the judge the commonwealth should be allowed in the case because of the real harm being done, especially at public universities and businesses. they're still counting, but already 350 students or faculty from the seven countries targeted by the ban can no longer go home or travel abroad for scholarly work. and we learned two students have been stranded by the travel ban, unable to return to their studies. one is a young woman from libya who goes to george mason university. she was

here are four things to know. the trump administration has just imposed new sanctions on iran. it impacts 13 people and a dozen companies in response to iran's recent missile tests. the sanctions do not appear to reverse the obama administration's decision to suspend sanctions as part of the 2015 nuclear deal. virginia will be allowed to join a civil suit challenging the administration's immigration order. a justice department lawyer in that case said 100,000 visas were revoked since the president signed it. but the state department says it's around

the fire at a trash and recycling plant in virginia is now under control, but it's still burning. the fairfax county fire chief says it will take a few days to put it completely out and longer to determine what caused it french police are raiding paris in connection with a foiled attack outside the louvre museum. the would be attacker who was shot by french soldiers is in the hospital. police believe he's egyptian. covering prince george's county, two people are in critical condition after they were pulled out of a burning home in clinton. >> the rescue was caught on video. news4's justin finch was there and spoke to a first responder who played a big part. >> reporter: moments not often caught on canmera. this video which was following prince george's county firefighters when the calls came in, including this one this morning. >> i happened to be coming northbound

we could, probably talking about a whole different topic right now. >> reporter: the fire remains under investigation. firefighters say it likely started in the kitchen and spread. we asked the corporal who made him not only call the fire in and stick around, he says clinton is his home and he always works in a public safety mindset. it was closed for more than 15 years but the community center opened today after half a million dollar renovation. as mark segraves discovered this new center was going to be a technology hub where residents cannot only get computer training but buy a computer for $25. >> reporter: this is the frederick douglass community center here in congress heights, washington, d.c. it just reopened after 15 years of being closed. it will be a new asset for the community after a renovation

immigration has been wrapped in house for the way in which it was rolled out, calling it hastily executed. also in court, we learned of at least two students from our area who are stranded overseas. and the visas of tens of thousands of people have been revoked. julie carey was in court for today's hearing. >> she joins us live from outside the federal courthouse in alexandria. what have you learned? >> reporter: not only is the commonwealth of virginia going to take the lead in this case, but the attorney general wanted to broaden the challenge. he's hoping to argue that it was not only those visa holders that were detained and turned around at dulles last weekend who were harmed but anybody holding a student or work visa in virginia who comes from those seven targeted countries. it's on virginia's college campus that is the string of the trump administration's executive order is already being felt.
