channel. there are new developments tonight on the president's immigration order. the trump administration will challenge the ruling that temporarily stop restrictions on travel to the u.s. the department of justice filing a notice of appeal tonight. once that appeal is filed, a judge could put the order back into effect. if not it's likely the trump administration will appeal to the supreme court. for now expect normal travel. but there could be continued protests surrounding the travel restrictions. the effect of people coming to the u.s. from seven majority muslim nations. the trump administration says they are necessary to keep americans safe. all new at 11:00, a george mason university student is back on campus tonight after being stuck overseas for more than a week because of that immigration order. news 4's darcy spencer's live at dulles international airport with her story. >> reporter: erika, this college student tells me that she had the highest

in libya, and because of that she was awarded a full scholarship. she chose to study here in the united states. so how does it feel to be back home? >> the nightmare's over. >> reporter: she's back on american soil at dulles international airport after spending a week overseas in limbo, not knowing if she could ever return to the united states. >> i would say it's just the worst experience i've ever had, and i hope it won't happen again. >> reporter: najwa elyazgi is from libya. she's a senior at george mason university, here legally on a student visa. she was on her way back to virginia friday, a week ago, trying to board a connecting flight in turkey, when she was told she could not board, she could not enter the united states because of the president's executive order. >> i searched for universities to try to apply for other places because i may never be back here again. >> reporter: she was able to come back saturday aft

order. virginia attorney general mark herring was at the airport to greet her. >> i was in northern virginia. really -- i thought it was really important to help welcome her back. >> welcome home. i'm so glad you're here. >> reporter: she says she was heartened by the welcome she received and those who've been protesting the travel restriction. >> i felt loved. i felt that the american people are all really nice. >> reporter: elyazgi is studying international relations. she plans to perhaps improve diplomacy one day between libya and the united states. >> do you plan to stay in the u.s.? >> definitely no. i was planning to do my master's. but now, no. i'll probably go to canada to continue there. >> reporter: because of all of this? >> yes, definitely. >> reporter: she tells me she missed a full week of classes. she's carrying a big load. 20 credits this semester. i said what are you going to do next? she said go back and hit the

books again. back to you. >> darcy spencer at dulles international airport. thank you. the developments in the immigration order are enough to make your head spin. so we asked nbc news's justice correspondent pete williams, who has the final say? >> right now it's in the ball -- the ball is in the courts. they'll decide whether the president can enforce this order. but congress in essence has the last word because they could change the law. unless the courts say that this executive order is unconstitutional. in that case there's no recourse. >> so to learn more about what we can expect next in the immigration order controversy, open our nbc washington app. the story's right there on that front page. well, it could be a tough path to confirmation for president trump's pick to fill the supreme court vacancy. but today vice president mike pence said that he's confident judge neil gorsuch will be confirmed. mr. pence spoke to a conservative legal group in philadelphia, and he

successor to justice antonin scalia, if you'll remember, who died last february. >> we will work with the senate leadership to ensure that judge gorsuch gets an up or down vote on the senate floor one way or the other. >> the nomination is expected to be contested by democrats, angry that president obama's supreme court pick was never given a hearing last year. vice president pence and house speaker paul ryan will be among the guests on "meet the press" with chuck todd tomorrow morning. you can catch that right here at 10:30 after news 4 today. we are learning more about the woman killed outside a bar in waldorf. this happened this morning at the beer for you on crane highway. police say some suspects assaulted a man inside that bar. he immediately left with miakita gray. her mother sharing her picture tonight. she was killed when police say one of the suspects opened fire in the parking lot. the man was hit in the leg.

the flight attendant knew something was wrong. she said she saw a greasy-haired girl with a well-dressed older man and that contrast between the pair set off alarm bells in sheila frederick's mind. she tried to talk to them, but the man got defensive, and so frederick left a note in the bathroom for the girl. the girl wrote back, "i need help." frederick works for alaska airlines and was on a flight from seattle to san francisco. and as soon as they landed in california, the man that she was -- that the young girl was with was arrested for human trafficking. airline ambassadors is an organization dedicated to fighting human trafficking. the founder wants airline staff across the country to use frederick's story as an inspiration for them to keep their eyes open and be alert. hundreds of people gathered in georgetown today for a fund-raiser in honor of yeardley

love was a uva lacrosse player killed by her ex-boyfriend in 2010. the fund-raiser at town hall restaurant raised about $17,000. and that money will go to the one love foundation, to raise domestic violence awareness. nbc 4 is committed to that very cause. we call it our safe at home initiative. the campaign also highlights solutions to domestic violence. and you can learn more by opening our nbc washington app and searching safe at home. you may want to take an uber, lyft, take a cab, whatever you've got to do to get to that super bowl watch party tomorrow because metro is going to be tied up with a major work project. there won't be any trains between foggy bottom and eastern market. and there will be some slowdowns along the entire orange, silver, and blue lines. so if you've got to take metro downtown, the agency says you should allow, get this, 45 minutes, nearly an hour, to get through the area. so plan your route accordingly. and you can see a complete list of closed stations as well

luxury cars swiped, stolen right off the dealership floor, and police in chicago think an organized crime ring is behind it. this is some surveillance video of the thieves smashing through that glass, taking bmws, porsches from the dealership. th

and then just calmly driving off with them. the same thing happened at a chicago-area jaguar and land rover dealership last week. luckily, some of those cars have gps tracking. new at 11:00, a night of hanging out takes a dangerous turn. home surveillance video shows a laptop exploding not once but four times on camera. nbc's steve patterson shows us what happens next. >> reporter: a close call on the couch as a family laptop bursts into flames and then does it again and again. >> it's really scary when it exploded on me. i wasn't expecting it. it was really loud. >> reporter: 17-year-old devon johnson was home with a friend as surveillance cameras rolled. the dell laptop had been charging on the couch just feet away. after blowing out the flames, unplugging the computer, and placing it on the patio, it burst into flames again. after devon thinks he's extinguished it for good, he moves closer and boom. >> no warning. it didn't heat up. iid

it literally just exploded. >> reporter: the sudden combustion seems to be caused by the lithium ion battery, the same kind found in hoverboards and cell phones that have caught fire, prompting nationwide recalls. >> that's a big fire. and it could have been worse. if those guys weren't there, wow. >> reporter: ucla scientist bruce dunn is an authority on lithium ion batteries. he says cases of laptops lighting up like this are extremely rare. >> fact they have it on a couch meant it couldn't dissipate heat. but really it means that all the protection that should be in there, it wasn't working. >> reporter: the johnsons have returned the laptop to dell. the computer company says safety is their highest priority and will investigate. tonight the johnsons are just happy no one got hurt. >> it could have been so much worse. and we're just so thankful. >> reporter: steve patterson, nbc news, los angeles. >> oh, and get this. video from the family's surveillance camera shows that that explosion and fire lasted nearly seven minutes. well, it's sure to be a touching moment at

your pictures with us on facebook, twitte instagram, snapchat, all of the above. all over the place. as we continue into tonight, not as chilly. in fact, those temperatures are going to kind of stay in the 20s and 30s as opposed to dropping into the teens mainly because we're having clouds roll into the area. look at that beautiful view of the kennedy center. tomorrow clouds with peeks of sun. i do believe we're going to have a little more sunshine, especially by tomorrow afternoon, and then we've got warmth on the way, record warming. thank goodness because of the temperatures out there right now. and also rain on the way. no rain tonight. temperatures settling down into the low s. in fact, d.c. has come up a little bit. we were at 33. now we're at 34. we're going to bottom out around 30 degrees in the beltway areas in the 20s. we've got clouds rolling in but that's about it. you pump out the radar a little bit more and you can see some showers down through tennessee and down through the deep south. but for us we are dry. and that's how it's going to remain. 50 degrees for daytime highs tomorrow. again, warm.

there. now, i can't rule out a sprinkle mainly north of d.c. but again, for the most part we're going to be dry tomorrow. just a little on the cloudy side. when you wake up tomorrow morning, it is going to be chilly. might want to have that fire burning early. definitely the heat on. temperatures are going to be in the 30s tomorrow morning. if you've got plans early tomorrow morning, it might be a good idea to maybe brew some coffee at home besides going out for it because it's just going to be so chilly. but by tomorrow afternoon we are warming up. exercise looking good and dry. of course i was talking about this earlier. the moisturizer alert. it is so dry out there in terms of the moisture in the atmosphere. your skin is probably dry. reaching for the hand lotion, reaching for the chap stick. going to do a little better as we get into next week and get some moisture in here. super bowl parties, no travel issues. if you're headed out for super bowl parties, by the time you leave temperatures in the 30s with clouds clearing. we will get some sunshine tomorrow. we're mild on monday. tuesday and wednesday, ag

once again, a redskins great did not get the nod. joe jacoby, a member of the 1980s all-decade team and a three-time pro bowler for the redskins was a finalist to make the hall of fame for a second straight year. jacoby started in four different super bowls and won three of them. wizards hosting the pelicans, looking for their 17th straight win at home. john wall in a giving mood from the start. he finds marcin gortat for one of his 14 assists. wizards open the game on a 14-2 run. pelicans fly back into the game. rookie buddy heeled knocking down a jumper. giving new orleans the lead. in the final six minutes that's when the gave belonged to wall star. you saw him getting the steal then finishing on the other end for two of his team-high 24 points. another theft. he finished the game with five steals. wizards finish the game on
