over, windy and cold, temperatures way below freezing on friday morning it will indeed mean it could be very icy. so a couple of very tricky mornings coming our way. winter storm watches are issued for northern maryland, frederick county, virginia. i fully expect a winter weather advisory that will include all of the d.c. metro area will be issued later today. a low to moderate impact on your thursday morning commute is to be expected an a couple of inches of know is a real possibility. i'll give you the exact amounts that we're forecasting, but right now let's go out to sheena who's enjoying this nice start to a wednesday. >> yes, it is a beautiful start to this wednesday and yes, i am live in bethesda, and a lot of people already starting to come and grab their train and you know, the light jacket is typically what we're seeing this morning.

very mild for this time of the year compared to what's considered normal and we are close to 10 degrees warmer than we were yesterday morning. temperatures mostly running in the upper 50s to around 60 degrees currently, but as we go through the day today another unseasonably warm day yesterday. we smashed that record with a record high temperature of 73 degrees. today we'll be in the mid to upper 60s. your planner for today showing dry conditions. unseasonably warm temperatures. you don't have to worry about the umbrella today. late tonight we start to see some precipitation move in and that changes to snow in the morning. more details on that. let's check the roadways with melissa mollet. >> taking a look at chopper 4, we do have an issue on the left side of the roadway. it is slowing things just a bit. it looks like there may have been a tow truck on the scene. you can see those backups building. northbound 95 after 17, that is

of about one otwo miles are quickly dissolving so that is good. 66 and the rest of 95, no major issues there. and northbound/southbound here on 270 is okay as well. it is 6:03 and developing right now for the second night in a row, with senate democrats are pulling an all nighter. here's a live look at the senate floor. democrats have been making speeches all night voicing their opposition to their colleague senator jeff sessions who has been nominated for attorney general but it's what happened to elizabeth warren that has people talking this morning. >> you're likely to see it onli online. senator warren has been silenced for the rest of the debate on senator jeff sessions. this all started last night when warren was speaking against sessions' confirmation including the letter written by coretta

ago. this letter opposed sessions' confirmation for a federal judgeship at that time. mcconnell stepped in and warned that warren broke the rules of the floor. something that warren took issue with. >> mr. president i am surprised that the words of coretta scott king are not suitable for debate in the united states senate. i ask leave of the senate to continue my remarks. >> well, senators rebuked warren's push to overturn the ruling but that did not stop her. she later took to facebook live to finish the reading of king's letter and last check, in the last six hours or so it has already gotten three and a half million views. thank you. so the rule that senator mcconnell says that senator warren broke was rule 19. it is a

another senator. she will not be allowed to speak for the rest of the debate on jeff sessions' nomination for attorney general. we should note that a spokesman for leader mcconnell says warren was warned several times. democratics though called it selective enforcement of that rule. and just as contentious as the senate is, social media exploding about news about senator warren, the ha#let liz speak is trending right now. she posted a facebook life video reading mrs. king's note outside. it got 3.5 million views but republicans say that warren violated a very clear rule. senator mcconnell saying extreme democratic obstruction has made confirming nominees the slowest since george washington. developing right now, devastation down south. take a look at this damage from

whether the people who live in that house are okay. we are going to bring you more as we get it. but for now, back to you. thank you. 6:07 and today elementary students forced to leave a bedbug infested school are heading back to class. >> savoy elementary students will be bussed to a new temporary school in southeast washington. justin is live outside of the new school with a look at what's planned today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. their first day back to school in two days and given the distance between savoy and their new school ferebee hope here, d.c. public schools will bus their students to and from both campuses for as long as needed. that first bus to leave this morning just before 8:00 in the morning. taking you now to video here, this all comes after school officials found the school did have a bedbug and rodent infestation. savoy dad showed us what he believes to be bedbug bites on her daughter's arm.

the city's former mayor was arrested in a sex for drugs bust. he was arrested last year after police say he tried to trade meth for sex with an undercover detective. he resigned shortly after that arrest. we are one year away from the 2018 winter olympics in south korea. this time around there will be events you've never seen before at the games. the four new sports are snow boarding big air, mass start and speed skating, curling mixed doubles and a nation's team event for alpine skiing. ice dancing will return. the american team features a brother and sister ready to make a name for themselves. >> 2014 was our first olympics and we've improved so much since then so we're looking to be the best in the world. >> we're lucky to be doing

this morning temperatures are mostly in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. what you need to wear though. we're not talking about a heavy coat, not today. we are still going to be unseasonably warm. leave the winter gear at home, but tomorrow that is a different story completely. if you like the weather today you're probably not going to like tomorrow. snow moving in and temperatures dropping well below normal for this time of year, about the upper 30s for a high. so yes, a big change is underway. chuck will have a closer look at the snow in the forecast and i'll talk more about those temperatures straight ahead. thank you. 6:15 now and thousands of people don't have power this morning. today there's going to be a major cleanup effort from a devastating storm. >> tornados touched down in louisiana. the weather channel is live in new orleans for us this morning. what are you seeing? >> reporter: see ago lot of destruction here. about seven tornados. one of them hit this area in new orleans east about a two mile

as you can see the destruction here. one of 250 homes severely damaged in this area. this is the front door right here. if you come over here you can see where aball wall once stood. this is where the light switches were. i want to show you right over here, this is how powerful these winds were. blew this roof off and also the shingles right off of here. currently right now here in new orleans there are about 950 people without power. they at one time had 9,000 people without power. the governor has declared this a state of emergency here in louisiana, so you have national guard out here in this area making sure to keep everything safe out here. and the really -- the real heart break of this area is that during contrakatrina in 2005, af people had come back here after rebuilding only to have something like this happen. so really it's terrible to see the devastation here. back to you. >>

thank you. 17 after the hour. news for your health, a maryland family urging people to get vaccinated for the flu after losing their daughter. 17-year-old kayla lynnton was not vaccinated. this comes as a new cdc report shows the number of states with wide outbreaks of flu has risen to 40. so far 15 flu associated deaths with children under the age of 18. that's a 67% increase compared to last year. how would you feel if another woman breast-fed your child? this happened to one north carolina woman and she wants charges brought against the daycare worker. >> as a mother, knowing that you put my son to your breast, it's just -- it's a big violation. and it's abuse to me and it's assault. >> the daycare worker says she was concerned that the three month old was constipated and offered to help. the mom said ,

breast-fed the infant anyway. that night the baby started vomiting and had to be taken to the emergency room. doctors ran several tests and determined that he is lactose intolerant. the worker was fired and police are looking into the incident. a sad update to a story that we covered last month. >> elijah young lost his battle with stage 4 brain cancer yesterday according to this post on elijah's fight facebook page. you may remember that we told you that he serves as an honorary prince george's county police officer last month. his mother said that he'd always wanted to be a police officer. very sad. >> well, today, this woman is going to show off her skills for the washington capitals. look at that. she is a hockey wizard and when the caps saw how good she was they invited her here for e

ice for practice and then tomorrow she will drop the ceremonial puck at the game against detroit. hockey is for everyone month. the team said it was a great time to invite her here. even if you can't ice skate it's always fun to watch. >> she gets to see d.c. when she comes to visit. she's going to practice with the women's junior league. >> she's coming tomorrow? >> she gets to go see snow too in addition to being a hockey fan, she gets to be a snow fan just like me. outside the weather will not have a big impact on your day today so that is the good news. super mild again staying dry, all through the daylight hours for today. problems begin as we get into tomorrow. tomorrow is when things are going to start to slide back down to the problematic range. tomorrow morning, heavy wet snow during the morning commute.

for tomorrow. there could be a slushy one to as much as three inches just at the height of the thursday morning commute. then we turn our attention to friday morning. could have a serious refreezing issue. there won't be any snow after about sundown tomorrow, but all that moisture on the roads, temperatures dropping back down into the low 20s. a black ice issue will be a real concern on friday morning's commute. so enjoy the easy ride in and back today. winter storm watch is already posted in northern maryland. no advisories as of yet here in the d.c. metro area. that's likely to change as snowfall amounts, probably an inch or less in the southern suburbs, one to two inches right around ton but maybe as much as two to five inches, hagerstown, frederick, those are the areas with the bilgeggest problems fo today though. let's go to sheena parveen who is sitting outside in the mild s

36-year-old david phillip jones is now charged with second degree murder. d.c. police say he's been arrested for dui twice in the last five years. well, you remember the story about that plane crash and the pilot who survived. well, he walked away after crashing that plane into a tree in fort washington on monday. >> the story you'll only see on news 4. 64-year-old spoke with our prince george's county bureau chief and he says he doesn't remember everything but he knows what he was thinking when that plane went down. >> took off, i hadn't climbed out very far, and the engine just stopped. there's not much time to think. it happens very fast. so really you're just focusing on a couple of important points like where am i going to land, how am i going to get there. >> he has some minor injuries, nothing serious though and he's already thinking about getting back into the sky. the first call that he made before

explain what's next for savoy elementary school students. >> reporter: good morning. savoy students will adjust to their new digs here starting today. they will be bussed from savoy in the mornings to ferebee hope for the morning schooling and then back from ferebee to savoy in the afternoon and that will be the routine for the next few weeks. we just saw workers positioning a sign for savoy students just above the main entrance here and while those students have been away, crews have been at work sanitizing savoy's classrooms and hauling out rugs and blankets. this all after they were found to have a bedbug and rodent infestati infestation. the health department will grant final approval to restart those classes and school officials hope to have savoy students back in their home school by the end of the month. back live, perhaps you can see that sign is still getting into place over there. buses will start

boulevard there at dennis avenue. we just have the right side of the roadway getting by. southbound is unaffected by this and the earlier problem on northbound new hampshire avenue ramp to the inner loop, that has cleared out of the way. 93 north with the right side of the roadway blocked. 66 is just fine, inbound 95, no worries there. eastbound at the 9th street tunnel, a crash there on the right side. still have that left lane blocked on 295. when you saw the beltway there, overall nothing terrible right now. new crash there, bottom of the beltway, those routes in and out of town are okay. 270 northbound/southbound looking good. a little slow top of the beltway. 66 inbound. it's okay and 95 northbound looking not so bad right now. o
