we have crews spread out across the region this morning as we help to get you to work and to school on time. so far, no word of any school closures or delays due to the weather. >> take a look at all the people we have working for you this morning. we're going to check in with the latest conditions where they are, but we want to start things off with chuck and sheena for a look at your forecast. good morning. >> and good morning. yes, indeed. we are tracking what will soon be a developing nor'easter off the delaware coast. for now, main area of low pressure just to our south. those are thunderbolts down there just south of southern maryland. that's how intense this storm is. we have thunder and lightning on the other side of the water from st. mary's county and now rain changing over to some heavy, wet snow, especially up across parts of northern maryland out into the shennendoah valley. so a mix of rain and mostly snow now from winchester to martinsburg to haegerstown and across the northern parts of frederick and c

the transition from rain to snow is essentially right along the maryland and -- or the montgomery and frederick county border. so just know that this is going to be a wet good around here for the next little bit because it's going to be raining for the next little while. speaking of rain and getting wet, let's go to my colleague, sheena parveen. >> good morning, chuck. it's raining out here, that's obvious as we look at the radar. look at these temperatures, though. nobody is at freezing until you get to the higher elevations, of course. but the rest of the area coming in in the mid to upper 40s. these temperatures will be hard to get near freezing by the morning commute. we expect most of the area to be well above freezing for the afternoon. so that is good. and then we go later into the day today, we get some quick drying. but this morning, we are looking at rain out here. as far as your planner is n

early this morning. then we dry out maybe even during the morning commute, honestly, and then temperatures start to get colder as we go through the day today. chuck will have a closer look at your commuter forecast, your bus stop planner, as well. let's take a look at the roads with melissa mollet. >> we're talking about wet roads at this point this morning. pretty much, no matter where you look in our viewing area. so 70 just east of 270, it's nice and wet there. i was on 270 this morning, looked very much like this here. taking a look here at the beltway, no problems right now on but, again, all of this green means we have rain falling across the area and definitely will need those windchill wipers perhaps later in the day in certain areas. you'll need a bit of an ice scraper. >> thanks, melissa. we are heading out to a very different feel in the a

megan mcgrath. how is the scene there? >> well, it is definitely wet and just within i'd say the last 10, maybe 15 minutes, we started to see some very light snow picking in. if you look at the lights behind me, perhaps you can see some of those snowflakes mixing in with the rain here this morning. still above freezing. i checked just a little while ago. we're at 39 degrees in frederick. we're not seeing any of this light snow doing much of anything. so not spenexpecting a major prm here, but there could be some slick spots. and, of course, this is all just starting here. we had record breaking temperatures for two days. the ground temperatures are pretty warm at this point. so while we are expecting a sloppy morning, a raining morning with some of this snow mixing in here in the frederick area, not expecting a major snow event here. so don't panic, folks. but you can expect to see some of these rain showers as well as the snow coming
4:05 am
so just take illustrate easy out there. >> our team coverage continues in northern virginia now. >> that's where justin finch is in leesburg this morning. justin, we know you're inside the truck. how is it looking there? >> we have heading west on the leesburg pike. first, your wind with shield wipe withers getting a workout this morning. however, we're seeing a lot of wet roads out there about 3:30 or so. saw a heavy rain come down, lots of splash back on the cars on the highway as a result. i want to point out we're seeing lots of d.o.t. crews at the ready, at the median, circling the road cell here, seeming to be ready just in case this weather system changes from that rainey thing we're seeing right now into a slushy or perhaps
4:06 am
morning. so, again, be careful as you're out there because the roads are already wet and we know the temperatures are dropping which means it could turn to that snowy, slushy stuff very soon. back to you in the studio. >> thanks, justin. temperatures have stayed above freezing and that may be a good thing. road crews had to delay putting down salt. officials say they couldn't pretreat the roads for this storm since all this rain would have washed it all away. they say fighting the storm is all about timing. we have enough trucks and vans and salt and all that to combat anything that happens. >> we're going be as prepared as we can. if people can delay their travel, that would be awesome. >> you heard her. vdot says if you don't have to get on the roads until after 9:00 a.m., that would be helpful. >> cities to our north, including philadelphia, new york and boston are expecting as much as two feet of snow and single

declared a snow emergency for today. new york city is under a winter storm warning until noon. students in new york, philadelphia and boston all have the day off since public schools are closed. it's now 4:07. we're going to get another check on your weather and traffic. >> let's check with chuck bell and sheena parveen. >> 70s back to back. all week we've been going, how can we do it? there's just not enough cold air in place. what a cold air challenge this has been, sheen ma. >> yeah, that's right. the rain/snow line is struggling to get into the district. we're around 50 degrees in the district. and i don't see temperatures dropping to 50 gris in the next hour. that does not seem possible. they're going to
4:08 am
closer to the district. that's where we start to see some of it changing over, but there is an edge to all this where we start to see a quick end. >> we'll be watching for the end. >> most of the heavier, steadier precipitation, rain or snow should be coming to an end by about 7:00 or 8:00 this morning. though i couldn't rule out some passing snow flurries or a snow squaw or shower later on tharchb as the winds get howling. we'll talk about the impact of all those winds coming up in a few minutes. >> taking a look at the traffic right now, everything is nice and light here this morning. we don't have any big worries. i want to show you a live camera right now. we're going to do this a lot through the morning, just taking a look around town. so 66 west of 29. in gainesville, you can see nice and wet. all of the green here looks like slime there in the background, that is snow falling across the area. beltway, p

and outer loop this morning. we'll have a lot of live pictures throughout the morning. we'll take a look at 95 in maryland and in virginia and then a look on the beltway. >> thanks, melissa. our coverage on this storm team 4 weather alert day doesn't stop here. we want to give you another look live from northern virginia. we're going to check back in with the latest in just a few minutes. today would be a good day to download the nbc app. search nbc washington in the itunes store or google play. >> i couldn't do anything. i was helpless. >> also ahead, a man franticly watches and waits as his 95-year-old mother try toes escape their burning home. how she finally managed to get out. and president trump try toes take on the democrats. take them out to lunch.
