we begin with a traj ig situation in northeast washington. two people critically hurt in a fire and their rowhouse gutted. on maryland avenue they are trying to determine what happened. derrick? >> reporter: well, indeed they are. take a look behind me. we're in the 700 block of maryland avenue in northeast. you can see the obvious signs of the fire that raced through this house early this morning. take a look. a neighbor called 911 alerted by the smoke and flames. firefighters arrived at the 700 block of maryland avenue northeast at about 5:00 in the morning. they found the flames had already begun to consume the capitol hill rowhouse from within. >> found a rowhome with fire in the basement and first and second floor and through the roof. >> reporter: there was three people in the house. one in the bext and two on the first floor, the moef seriously in

inhalation injuries. >> two transported in critical condition. one was in minor condition. >> reporter: two firefighters also suffered minor injuries and they were also taken to an area hospital. one of the residents of the home was taken to a nearby convenience store initially to keep warm and later taken to a hospital for observation. houses in the block are close together with common walls. there was a danger of the fire spreading but firefighters were able to prevent that and though damage was heavy to the front and rear of the home. the cause of the fire has yet to be determined. >> back with you live now, the saving grace with this fire, as you can see this building and the building next to it are joined. with that joining what set back several feet from the main structure where most of the fire was concentrated. that's one of the reasons that no other buildings were damaged and of course the quick work of firefighters also contributed to that. five people hospitalized, two of them in critical condition. we're live in northeast, derrick ward, news 4. back to you. >> thank you.

winter storm that's has people in parts of the northeast cleaning up this morning. that storm was the big eflt snowstorm of the season. >> folks are digging out from philly to new york. but their cleanup could seem minor compared to what's happening in new england which got the worst of the storm. back here at home it's plain cold. sheena parveen joins us to tell us about a weekend warm-up. >> believe it or not, we have a warm-up in store for us as we go into the weekend but for the rest of today, we're talking about a cold end to the week. look at the feels like temperature across most of the mid-atlantic states and up in the northeast. we're looking at the 20s and teens even an hour earlier, feels like 22 in the district and 19 in leesburg, to ends off the work, we're not going to see the warm-up today just yet. we'll be mostly around 40 degrees this afternoon. we are going to stay dry though but then we go into saturday and sunday.

some breaking news, a former national guardsman is going to be spending the next 11 years in prison. jalloh was sentenced for trying to help isis. he was arrested after an fbi sting last year. he tried to give isis money and buy guns here in northern virginia. in court today he said he made the mistake of his life and did not intend to harm anyone. this morning the search is on for a serial burglar in northern virginia. deputies in both loudoun and falkier counties believe this man is the one who hit homes across the area. they think he took several guns from homes in that area. according to deputies in one

they are also worried with both the suspect and many homeowners armed that things could escalate if the thief hits while somebody is home. >> a high school student in kensington is facing second degree assault charges. police say there's cell phone video showing her attacking another student and we warn you that the video may be disturbing. police say a 15-year-old girl attacked a 17-year-old girl at einstein high school. it happened on monday. the victim has changed schools fearing for her safety. now the school is responding with this message. >> we always encourage students to stay in our school system. we want to provide them with a safe place to learn. the behavior in this video is disturbing and disheartening. >> the parent who shared the video thinks it's unfair the victim had to change schools while the accused attacker was suspended.

for a few seconds can have life altering effects. that's the message that students are getting as police aim to crack down on distracted driving. news 4's christian wright says distracted teen drivers were involved in more than 500 crashes in the county last year alone. >> we take a car that was destroyed in an accident by a drunk driver and put it in one of our grassy areas right in front of the school so that everybody can see it. >> students in fairfax county -- police agree that one new way is to try many of the same methods used to fight drunk driving. >> we need to do more of that -- we can catch up. i think we're slightly behind and i think some of the great ideas they gave us will help get us to where we need to be. >> senior is student representative to the school board.

ways scammers target pro inspective home buyers on a special edition of american greed which airs monday night at 10:00 on cnbc. bob mcdonnell's legal defense fund raised $20,000 in the last quarter. they started the fund for mcdonnell convicted of public corruption and had the sentence overturned by the supreme court. the fund had more than half a million dollars in cash at the end of last year. mcdonnell has since rejoined the virginia beach law firm and he is teaching at regent's university. larry hogan is facing criticism over his social media accounts. criticizing the president's travel ban and urging the governor to condemn the order. some of those comments were then deleted. hogan's spokesperson says he believes political operatives were behind some of the comments that were removed. 400 people have been banned from

then we have afternoon rain moving in. if you have the weekend plans, keep in mind it will be milder, you're not going to need the same jacket you have on today but you'll need an umbrella if you're out and about sunday afternoon. 42 degrees and cold with increasing clouds. then we go into your weekend and here's the breakdown. saturday morning we're still going to be starting off cold, 36 degrees by 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m., clouds continue to move in. we'll stay dry, 8:00 a.m. on sunday, 49 degrees we're cloudy and then through sunday afternoon, that's when we start to see the rain moving in. before the rain gets here we're talking about a high around 67 degrees. these temperatures are running around 20 degrees above normal for this time of year, especially as we go into sunday. that's going to be the warmest day again. unseasonably warm again. there you see the 60s across the weekend. we go into monday and we will be cooling down quite a bit windy, 49 degrees. then we're around 50 tuesday and wednesday. by thursday, that's when we

we just talked about how cold it is outside this morning which gives us great opportunity to talk about keeping your pet safe in the winter weather. stephanie shane, the humane chief operating officer is here to tell you about winter weather and your pets and you brought one with you. >> good morning. >> thank you so much for being here. i want to start first talking about the cold. cold temperatures in general, some people unfortunately don't understand the cold and what it has to do with pets and leave the pets outside. >> you know, really easy way to remember this, if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for your pet. too cold for you to be

it's too cold for your pet for any length of time. bring your pet indoors, get them inside, because they need to be warm like you do. >> i think a misconception, they have the fur coat, perfectly warm, they are outside enjoying it. >> that's not true. they are domestic animals, not wild animals and not equipped to be out there in the cold weather without some sort of protection and home is the right protection. >> unfortunately we see a lot of cases like that and hopefully that comes to an end. ice is a huge issue and my dog personally has walk on salt and snow and whimpers and a lot of people don't understand what's going on. >> it really burns their feet. i've had the same thing happen with my dog. they lift their foot up. it's very painful. so first, if you do have that happen while you're walking your dog, wipe your feet off as soon as you get home and clean them really well and make sure you are cleaning their

well. fw it's at your home we w recommend a pet safe salt product. our friends at the big bad wolf set us up with all of this today. even if you don't have a dog, it's good to buy the pet safe because we're a pet loving country, pet loving community. somebody is going to have a dog walking around. >> i even have the plastic booties like rubbery and go on my dog's paws and she let's me put them on her feet but you have other little booties here. >> same concept of what you're using them for. they are to protect their feet. and not all -- most dogs probably don't love them at first but it's amazing how they do get used to them and figure that out. this doesn't hurt when i go outside. if you want to try them, give them a try. if they don't love them, distract with treats and keep trying. >> hopefully the pet safe salt, keep an eye on your pets. antifreeze, what about this. >> highly

the winter. but if you notice a leak under your car, you want to make sure you get that fixed right away. antifreeze has a bright green color. if you see it anywhere on the street in front of your house, maybe it's not from your own car, it's really important to clean up. it's very toxic. it has a very sweet taste so all kinds of animals are attracted to eating that antifreeze. >> i didn't know it had a flavor. >> the compound has a sweet taste. if you see it, cat litter is a perfect thing to put it in that, soak it up and make sure you sweep it up. >> jackets for the dogs, especially in windchills where we're in the teens they need jackets. >> not just for little dogs, big dogs, a short coated dog, they need that jacket. >> also, fur and the dander that comes from their skin and we're talking about fish oil, right? >> this is just like us but our skin tends to get drier in the winter. this is a real easy
