block of hawk run terrace. police appear to be taking several others into custody but it's unclear what role, if any, the individuals had in the shooting. we have a ground crew headed to the scene. have you heard what happened outside a d.c. public school today? >> betsy devos is responding to the angry protests outside that school this morning, her first visit to a public school since taking office. >> reporter: it was meant to be a peaceful vigil organized by the washington teacher's union. but as the crowd grew, the vigil turned into a protest, with people blocking vehicles including secretary devos's motorcade. at one point, protesters stood in her way and

whisked to another entrance the the secretary spent more than an hour inside the school observing classes and speaking to teachers and the chan . devos later issued a statement saying she respects peaceful protests but will not be deterred. >> i just want to say i had such a great visit with chancellor wilson and principal doleman this morning and some incredible teachers, awesome students. students in loudoun county walked out of class to protest the president's travel ban. our cameras were at broad run high school in ashburn where we saw about

participate. administrators got wind of the plans earlier this week on social media, so they were prepared to help keep students safe. president trump welcomes japan's prime minister to the white house today. >> president trump and prime minister shinzo abe talked about the strong bond between the u.s. and japan. the president promised free and fair trade and continued defense against north korean aggression. both leaders head to florida this weekend for bilateral talks and a round of golf. michael flynn isn't sure that sanctions didn't come up during his discussions with russia's ambassador last december. flynn had no recollection of discussing sanctions but said it may have come up. vice president pence previously denied sanctions came up during the talk. it is illegal to try to influence u.s. foreign policy

georgia congressman tom price has been sworn in as the new secretary of health and human services. president trump teased some big developments in national security. he could announce some new steps to keep the nation safe as soon as next week, but didn't elaborate. he also said he has no doubt his executive order on immigration will prevail in court. the president promised to continue his fight after a federal appeals' court ruling on his travel ban. the justice department has two choices. it has 14 days to ask the ninth circuit court of appeals to reconsider its rules.

with the supreme court, but some legal scholars say that could be an uphill battle. even if the government were to win its appeal, it would only lift the temporary respratraini order. today nbc news also learned the white house is working on rewriting the executive order so it could pass legal muster. sources say the president's legal team still believes the ridge order will prevail in court. but they're considering signing a new immigration order in the meantime. lawyers for the state of virginia are also challenging the president's executive order on immigration. arguing in federal court that its seven nation travel ban violates the constitution and is the result of animus towards muslims.

the government argued virginia failed to show any medicimmedia harm because none of the students or faculty in question have immediate travel plans. the judge in this case says she will rule as soon as possible. still ahead, tracie potts is going to break down donald trump's first three weeks in office with a look at some of the challenges of his presidency so far. first at 4:00, we're learning at a close call with a drone at dulles airport. a pilot on an air france flooig had to land at the airport and apparently spotted a drone on his descent. the flight landed safely and the tower warned off some of the other flights. it's illegal to operate a drone within five miles of an

a former national guardsman from virginia who admitted trying to provide material support to isis learned his fate. a federal judge sentenced him to 11 years in prison. he is from sterling. in july he was arrested during an fbi sting and later pleaded guilty to plotting to help the islamic state. today he said he made the mistake of his life. police are asking for your help to find a girl missing in wood brij. s the last time anyone saw her adams was wearing a maroon and black hoodie with a yellow symbol on the front. let's go to doug kammerer in the storm center. >> not too windy. right now 5-10 miles per hour, but even t

still gives us a windchill. it's a cold day across our region. take a look. right now look at these windchills, 28 in d.c., 26 gaithersburg, 31 culpepper. it's a cold one and it will be cold tonight. look at this, the radar showing snow. and yes, it is snowing but it's not hitting the ground in many locations. notice this circle right here, this is the hole, it's called a snow hole. it's actually drying out before it hits the ground. it's snowing aloft and then it evaporates. what is this doing? this is actually a warm front coming across. i'll tell you why we're seeing snow, at least aloft. i'll tell you what's behind this in just a minute. chopper 4 was up over a home completely engulfed in flames. we just spoke with prince george's county fire officials.

the home. that fire was moving so fast, firefighters had a hard time. it's not clear if anyone was home when the fire started but the fire department says no one was actually hurt. investigators are trying to figure out how this massive fire start. the glover park whole foods is back open again after a health scare. there was a sign on the door last night indicating the store violated d.c. health codes. whole foods put out a statement reading, we take this matter seriously and there's nothing more important to us an that health and safety of our customers and team members. we feel confident our store is ready to reopen and we can assure the community the store is safe. just a little to the forth of us, folks are digging out after they really got dumped on. >> this after the biggest snowfall of the year so far. what airlines are doing to get stranded travelers to their destinations after thousands of flights were cancell

my son just stopped throwing up after a rough few days. dozens of kids in arlington were too sick to go to school for a third day in a row. 152 kids called out sick today. the school system says a lot of them stayed home

maryland's democratic party is investigating saying the republican governor owes his constituents answers. a spokeswoman said she thinks political operatives were behind some of the recently removed posts. for the second time inless th than a year, crooks have stolen a batch of weapons from the fbi. the san francisco field office just posted a $5,000 reward for the return of a high powered firearm and a bulletproof vest. the fbi tells us someone stole them from an agent's vehicle. the feds also say they're searching for a cache of firearms stolen from an agent's car here in the district back in july. we're in for a cold one tonight. the winds pretty light right

prime minister shinzo abe are headed to florida. the two will hold bilateral talks and take in a round of golf. both leaders promised to continue the strong relationship between the two countries. two people managed to escape a fire that ripped through their capitol hill rowhow is this morning. now they are fighting for their lives. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked the blaze. two men are listed in critical condition. dozens of kids at oakridge elementary school called out sick. the health department say there is they be a norovirus outbreak at that school. 152 students were absent today. the school says it did a deep cleaning last night to keep the virus from spreading. allegations of a maternity ward blunder. one

her the wrong baby to breast-feed. >> she's wondering if parents of the mystery baby even know their newborn was drinking another mother's milk. >> at the center of this baffling baby mixup is 4 month old scarlet richmond. scarlet was hungry in the nursery at the valley hospital in ridgewood, new jersey. it was just before 5:00 a.m. when her mother called for scarlet to breast-feed. that's when melissa says the nurse brought the wrong baby. >> nobody ever checked. >> reporter: nobody ever checked hospital wristbands. so 20 minutes into breast-feeding she says the nurse burst back in with startling news. >> she actually said there was a terrible mistake. this is not your baby. th >> they gave her someone else's child. she breast-fed this child for 20

minutes. >> this was like a hospital catastrophe. >> reporter: now she is suing valley hospital. they said the baby mixup wasn't just a harmless mistake. >> it's not a simple error. >> reporter: after she breast-fed the wrong newborn, she says she ran out of colosstrum. >> she was frustrated and upset because there was nothing left for her. >> reporter: a rep from the hospital declined to comment. the richmonds say they are especially troubled by their hospital records. they say the mystery baby started feeding between 4:00 and 5:00 in the morning.

fired. police say they received many 911 calls. officers and fire personnel arrived on the scene. they found a man dead in the parking lot. police say they have detained some people who live here where the body was found. what does that mean? are they suspects, persons of interest? at this point police say they are just questioning them. detectives are trying to figure out exactly what happened here. police have not identified the bodies, so we don't know who this man is. they're waiting for the medical examiner's office to arrive. we don't know if the man lives in this neighborhood. that is one thing that many people have been asking. i explained to them that police are still gathering details. this is the third homicide in montgomery county this year. now possibly unrelated, i do want to let you know that there was a man who walked into a hospital. he had a bull let wound. i asked police about that.
