some of you under a severe thunderstorm warning tonight. not just for the storms that we've been talking about but for strong winds moving in. now, i want to show you a look at the flags at union station. as storm team4 meteorologist amelia draper joins us with the latest warnings and what we'll be up against in the next 24 hours. >> already tracking damaging winds in part of the areas, getting reports of trees down in parro parr parts of gerrit and loudoun. these are very powerful and potentially dangerous winds moving into the area. we're talking about gusts in hagerstown. these strong winds pushing into washington within the hour. so here's the latest. the orange is thunderstorm warnings, not for storm but for wind. kind of a lot of confusion on social media right now. nonetheless, as this line of rain moves through, this is marking the leading

very strong winds. again, already getting reports of trees down across the area. this will continue to be the trend not just overnight tonight but throughout the day tomorrow. so here's the arrival for damaging winds. bethesda at 11:10, annapolis, 1130. the counting in orange are under a very serious high-wind warning running until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow evening for wind gusts around 60 miles an hour. not only wind damage, but we'll be tracking some spotty power outages and wait until you see how cold it's going to feel tomorrow morning with these winds. we are tracking breaking news out of northern california. water overflowing at one of the nation's biggest dams. emergency officials saying the oroville dam could fail at any moment. everyone at a nearby town of 16,000 people have been asked to leave. the water began flowing over the emergency spillway yesterday after heavy rain damaged the main spillway. it is, in fact, the first time in th

that has happened. the dam supplies water for agriculture in the central valley and to residents and businesses in southern california. d.c. police are looking for a young boy. miguel escobar. he's 14 years old, and he's been missing since wednesday. escobar was last seen on hole brook terrace in northeast. he was wearing a black sweater, khaki pants and red and black shoes. if you've got any information on his whereabouts, you're asked to call police. the music world is mourning the loss of a jazz legend. alger row died this morning in a los angeles hospital. he announced he wouldn't be touring anymore, citing exhaustion. his career spanned half a century. his biggest single, we're in this love together, hit the charts in 1981, and he also sang the theme song for

"moonlighting." he was splated to play the hour theater on friday. he was 76 years old. actors, musicians, and lovers of jazz all paying tribute on social media. and many of you offering condolences through our nbc washington facebook page. we've got more on his life and music in our nbc washington app. plus we'll bring you highlights from tonight's grammy awards. that will be later in the broadcast. 12 stay with us for that. anti-trump protests in our country and across the border and hundreds of undocumented immigrants in this country arrested during raids. news4's darcy spencer spoke to local advocates who want to make sure people know their rights. >> reporter: reports of possible i.c.e. arrests here along richmond highway in the alexandria area of fairfax county have people concerned. that's according to

some are afraid to go to church and school. >> i'm not clear what basis these agents have to talk to anybody. if they're going to go up and start talking to everybody that's latino, that's the kind of stuff the ss and the soviets do. this isn't how we operate in this country. >> he held a well attended town hall meeting saturday. he said many wanted to know how they could stop the trump administration's crackdown. >> there was a lot of people in my district who asked what they could do to stop these raids, to give people comfort, to make it known that nobody wants people to be arrested, taken away, deported. >> reporter: members of casa went door to door at an apartment complex with a large latino population in herndon. they're letting immigrants know their rights. >> the first one is you don't have to open the door when the police or i.c.e. officers come to your house. you don't have to open the door. you don't have to sign up anything. you can remain silent.

out these cards to immigrants making sure they know what to do and what not to do if they're stopped by police. it's in response to i.c.e. raids taking place across the country. i.c.e. said the majority of those arrested had criminal convictions. >> if we don't know our rights, then that's going to lead us to fall in a mistake. so for us it's very important to let the community know about their rights. >> reporter: in alexandria, darcy spencer, news4. an autopsy will be done tomorrow on human remains found in springfield. fairfax county police say a woman's remains were found on whim set road yesterday. detectives say they don't think there's any threat to public safety. a towson basketball player injured in a drive by shooting last night. john davis was shot outside his family's home in philadelphia. that according to the school. davis was in philadelphia for a game. in a statement,

the city overnight for the dedication of the bith of his son. he was treated at the hospital and later released. it's unclear, though, when davis will return to the court. monday, president donald trump meets with canadian prime minister justin trudeau. the two leaders at odds over some of trump's policies. and as nbc's kelly o'donnell shows us, it's just one of the latest challenges the white house is now dealing with. tomorrow prime minister justin trudeau meets mr. trump at the white house. trudeau directly criticized the president's seven-country travel ban, tweeting a message for refugees. welcome to canada. defending that travel ban across morning television today, the president's senior policy adviser stephen miller lashed out at the courts. >> we have a judiciary that has taken far too much power and become in many cases a supreme branch of government. >> reporter: the white house weighing options. >> to ensure that our immigration system does not become a vehicle for admitting people into our country who are hostile to this nation and its values. >> reporter: miller's boss liked what he heard. the president tweeted, great job. but miller was clearly unprepared to answer for mr. trump about controversy around national security adviser michael flynn, who told mike pence he had not discussed sanctions with russia but monitored calls suggest he did. >> if you were caught

the vice president of the united states, would that be considered a fireable offense in the trump white house? >> it's not for me to answer hypotheticals. it wouldn't be response. it's a sensitive matter. meanwhile, the president is hoping to have more members of his cabinet on board this week. senators will vote tomorrow evening on banker steve mnuchin to lead the treasury department and david shulkin to be promoted to lead the department of veterans affairs. meanwhile, a note here to explain to you that nbc news has lost an important member of its family. sheldon fielman. we called him shelly, died overnight. he was a photographer whose career spanned more than 50 years. starting back in the john f. kennedy administration. on his first day, he covered the lee harvey oswald shooting in dallas. he also captured those historic images of john hinckley's assassination attempt of ronald reagan. those of us who were fortunate to know and work with shelly

amazingly talented co-worker. shelly was 80 years old. two people subject to a month-long search in fairfax county are home safe tonight. lizzy colin dress and her son a aidan showed up at their home last night. they're looking for the baby's father. no word yet on where the missing mom and baby were for the past few weeks. trouble just before takeoff. passengers forced to deplane because of somebody on board. we're going to see what had travelers fearing for their safety. and another blast of winter weather pounding the northeast. some areas could see up to two feet of snow. don't go anywhere if you want your end of the weekend dose of excitement. the caps start their week with a smile after giving a week to remember to one super stick handler. the biggest move of the sports week belongs

this is the scene just outside poughkeepsie, new york, where they're expecting up to eight inches before it's all over. driving along i-84 is expected to the treacherous and the situation is only getting worse in parts of connecticut where up to eight more inches of snow is being added to the 20 they already got. the state has had three winter storms in four days. >> crazy. this is crazy. >> a driver navigating through the heavy snow in maine. some areas could end up with two feet before this stops tomorrow. portland issued a parking ban so that streets could be plowed. vehicles were getting stuck, though, as drivers tried to crawl up the city's hills. new at 11:00, a bizarre situation for passengers taking a united airlines flight last night. many of them got off the plane in fear after the pilot started rambling. nbc's kristi smith reports.

>> reporter: just after 9:00 passengers landed from austin from sfo explaining when they boarded their flight, the pilot had some unusual announcements. >> the pilot is late. the captain is late and she shows up dressed like a civilian and asked us to take a vote to see whether we should have her change into her uniform or fly as is. >> pam o'neill says passengers weren't sure what was happening. >> she started off by saying she had not voted for either trump or clinton because they're a bunch of liars. >> reporter: passengers say she mentioned a divorce and some other issues and at that point some of them didn't feel comfortable enough to fly. >> after that hand, half the plane probably deplaned. then yeuned acted accordingly. >> reporter: a youtube video was posted and taken down of a woman believed to be the pilot in a baseball cap talking to passengers. we contacted the woman who shot the video but she

publicized, echoing other passengers' concerns for the pilot oh well bel. >> i feel very bad for her and the situation she's under. >> reporter: united offer a statement. >> we hold our employees to the highest standards and have replaced this pilot with a new one to operate the flight, which is scheduled to depart shortly. we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. >> some of the passengers talked with the pilot as she left the plane crying. she apologized to them and one even hugged her and said that it seemed like she was having a nervous breakdown. nearly three months after a boating accident on potomac river, crews have recovered the body of a missing fisherman. the boat sank in st. mary's county, but today roger grissome's body washed ashore 63 miles away on the virginia shoreline. that according to maryland police. grissome was on a boat with three other fishermen when it sank in november. only one man survived. a localrc

save one of the last pieces of a long gone community in bethesda. crow hill along river road was settled by former slaves just after the civil war. the macedonia baptist church is the last piece of history there of that community. members say that a burial ground near the church is under this parking lot that you're seeing. they don't want a developer to further destroy the site. today they marched to make a point. >> no to equity one. you will not build a garage or anything else on our bethesda african burial grounds. >> we will respect the people who came before us and honor their lives as they should have been from the very beginning. >> plans to honor those buried in the cemetery range from a plaque to a park or even a museum. >> announcer: and now, here's storm team4 forecast. again, we're under a storm team4 weather alert as we track dangerous, damaging winds moving into the

checking my phone, the latest from the national weather service, getting reports of trees down on a house in winchester. also the national weather service reporting trees down in parts of damascus. also storm reports coming in in frederick county, washington county. so we're going to continue to track these very strong winds not only tonight but throughout the entire today tomorrow. the counties here in orange, this is the d.c. metro area now, under a severe thunderstorm warning until 11:45. this is kind of rare because it's not for lightning or for storms, but it's for these damaging winds. gusting close to 65, 68 miles an hour, moving through the area. so we're seeing these moving into the district right now, moving into annapolis around 11:30. what you can do, make sure your phone is charged, don't park by a tree if at all possible as you head throughout the day tomorrow as well. take a look at the current gusts. 58 right now in hagerstown. gusting up to 48 in winchester. you can seee

in the district right now at 37 miles an hour. so we'll have wind gusts tomorrow at times up to 60 miles an hour. that's why it's a weather alert. winds this strong produce some wind damage as we're already seeing, some power outages, actually seeing our lights flicker here in the studio. as this line is moving through, i suspect that's the reason. also windchills tomorrow in the 20s and 30s. as we look to the rest of the work week, it's mainly dry but chilly, and then next weekend it's a long weekend. president's day, and it's actually looking really nice. but we have to get back to the winds. so this evening they were breezy. as we move into the overnight hours, extremely windy, feeling like temperatures are in the 20s and 30s. take a look at the feels like temperatures right now. i mean what a dramatic change. fra about 55 still here in the district and then feeling about 30 in hagerstown, 32 in frederick and 28 degrees back in winchester. we talked about the change earlier tonight and yesterday as well. it is arriving as we speak. tom

you're heading to work. the kids are heading to school, and it's bitter out there. the winds are brutal. so many people on facebook and twitter saying the winds are absolutely howling outside right now. this is going to continue to be the case again, not just tonight but throughout the day tomorrow. this is what greets us tomorrow morning. definitely want the gloves. feeling about 14 in hagzer town, 21 in manassas, 22 in annapolis. the one good thing about the forecast tomorrow, at least there's plenty of sunshine in it. but we'll have temperatures in the 40s throughout the day. look at our city camera shaking with the winds in the background. 7:00 a.m. we're around 39 degrees. around noon in the low 40s. a high tomorrow at 44. still windy form at 3:00 p.m. then 7:00 p.m. the winds start to come down a little bit. it will be breezy and around 40 degrees at that point. as we look to tuesday, a high around 51 degrees. it will be valentine's day on tuesday. wednesday, plenty of clouds. it's breezy as well. not too bad, pretty normal for
