>> thank you. it's 5:02. now to a developing story out of the white house. international security advisor michael flynn has resigned. this marks the first major departure of president trump's senior team after less than one month in office. flynn's resignation comes after reports that he had misled vice president mike pence and other officials about his conversations with russia's ambassador to the u.s. about sanctions. he wrote this in his letter. unfortunately because of the fast pace of events i inadvertently briefed the vice president elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the russian ambassador. he says he has apologized to the president and vice president. we want to talk about what comes next here. >> multiple possible replacements here. >> we are looking for three people on this list starting with the top trump

retired general keith kellogg, a vietnam veteran who commanded the western coalition during the second iraq war. after retiring he worked for familiar contractors in this area. retired vice admiral, robert harwood is a navy seal. he is the second one being considered. he served as deputy commander of the u.s. central command. he also commissioned the national counterterrorism center and here is a picture of him. and finally, we do want to go to four star general david petraeus who was considered for trump's secretary of state. you might recall the meetings he had shortly after being elected. the former cia director resigned in 2012 after admitting to giving classified data to his mistress so perhaps the most controversial among the three picks up for consideration according to our sources. back to you. all right. thank you. also this morning the washington post reporting that the

department warned the trump administration that michael flynn could be vulnerable to russian blackmail. we'll have more on all this in our next half hour from capitol hill. >> also developing this morning the trump administration will not be able to implement its travel ban in virginia. a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction yesterday. the judge noted that the administration offered no justification for the travel ban and wrote that the president's executive power quote, does not mean absolute power. virginia's attorney general shared his thoughts on what the trump administration could do next. >> i think we've all seen from these last few weeks it is difficult to predict what the president might do, but what i've got in front of me as attorney general is an executive order that was unlawful, unconstitutional and un-american. >> the injunction only applies to people who live, work or attend school in virginia. a federal court has also suspended the immigration

meanwhile, february 13th has become a noteworthy day for mark herring. virginia's ban on marriage for some same sex couples was struck down exactly three years ago yesterday after herring successfully argued for that in court. five minutes after the hour now. she's been missing since december. now a 15-year-old girl's death is a homicide. fairfax county police identified the remains of damaris reys rivas, the teenager was found dead in springfield over the weekend. there were fears for rivas' safety because she had contact with gang members. justin finch is working to find out more. we'll have a live update in about ten minutes. today the montgomery county council will take what they learned from a deadly explosion at an apartment complex and use it to prevent similar tragedies. the council will discuss its final internal audit on that explosion last year that killed seven people

lessons the county learned about responding to this type of emergency situation. news 4's chris gordon will be tweeting from inside that meeting. a fairfax county school principal is the second administrator at the same school to go on leave. a letter went out to parents at west potomac high school letting them know that assistant principal jessica stats will be filling in for the principal. they declined to say when they went on leave or why. supporters of a popular loudoun county principal are rallying to get him reinstated. john brewer has been on leave since december and the superintendent is recommending that he be fired. the loudoun county sheriff's office is investigating accusations of inappropriate behavior by the school's former band director. when he left the school, brewer

last year, but the teen did not tell anyone until august. we are also learning new disturbing details in the child sex abuse case against jeffrey sandusky. he is the adopted son of former penn state football coach jerry sandusky. prosecutors say that jeff sandusky asked teenagers to send him nude photos and perform sex acts. one of the victims was a 16-year-old girl. his father is serving decades in prison for molesting boys while at penn state. new details are being uncovered in a case that's haunted a maryland community for decades. two sisters were abducted from a mall. the children were never found. lloyd welch jr. goes on trial in april for their murders. now, new court documents are uncovering alarming details about his past. prosecutors plan to include 15 different victim accounts that allege rape, attempted abduction and domestic violence against

welch. those cases have never been tried in court but will be part of evidence if he's convicted. a church deacon is in critical condition and police are trying to figure out if the other driver was racing before the crash. on saturday night dee icaacon hernandez was turning on to den feld avenue in kensington. he was broadsided and his church family is praying for the best. >> he's always there for the people. >> i have never seen him when he wasn't filled with excitement. you walk into the room, he'll run to embrace you. >> this crash happened at the same intersection where maryland highway officials launched a traffic study in january. there have been accidents there before and numerous safety complaints. nearly 50 cars have been broken into in arlington. police say the break-ins happened on two different days last week. they say the

vandalism around 3:00 sunday morning. they're encouraging owners of those cars to reach out to police. prince george's county police are trying to figure out why a driver ran over a man in a parking lot killing him. >> the man drove off. he hit him. >> that video you're watching shows some tour de franof the c happened after a range rover hit a man. the victim was armed with a rifle. police say they did recover a weapon at the scene there. they say the driver is not cooperating with police. the victim's name has not been released. a murder victim's car might hold answers to what led to his death. prince george's county police found a man shot to death inside a car yesterday morning. a sticker for the ride share service lyft was also found in that car. it's not clear whether the man was working as a driver when he was killed. police are hoping to use neighborhood surveillance cameras to help solve this case. today the montgomery county
