dark cloud that tends to follow you around everywhere. almost anywhere could get a quick little rain or even a snow shower later this afternoon as a cold front comes through. may want to grab the umbrella to keep it on the safe side today. but again, better rain chances down to the south. gusty northwest winds come back into the picture and we'll be very cold for tomorrow as well but we are talking about a big-time workup in time for the weekend. president's day weekend at that. >> we do have the rain around the area, but it is mostly south of the district so at best i think if you're in the district or surrounding counties at best you'll see some sprinkles this morning. the rain is mostly near fredericksburg and even points farther south. even off into the points of maryland but closer to delaware. there you see it. the northern edge where temperatures are quite a bit differ

17-year-old returned home. the teen was last seen leaving her home on january 15th. >> her family hadn't seen or heard from her since then. justin finch is live with more on how this emotional reunion came together. >> reporter: good morning. what a valentine's day for this mom and daughter. venus missing for a month now home safe with her family. let's take you now to video of that moment one more time. she came back to her alexandria area home back at 9:00 last night just as news 4 crews were interviewing her mom about her being missing. then she walked into the door into her mother's arms and for a fight that she says drove her to run away. the teen assured her mom that she had been safe and she had gone online for details after realizing there was a search for

her. she says she also tracked news of other missing young people. >> i'm really sorry because i know she was very scared about what could happen to me. and i love you, mama. >> reporter: now, she did not say just where she had been immediately but did say that she was safe and also revealed ties to those other missing persons cases. she's also speaking with fairfax county police. back in to you. >> thank you. and this morning we're learning more about why the 17-year-old disappeared. this all goes back to january 12th of this year when a body washed up in the potomac river. that was the body of christian alexander rivas. he had been murdered. he is the ex- boyfriend of venus. she ran away from home after learning her ex- boyfriend had been murdered. >> werou

this deadly shooting. so far police have not released the victim's name. they haven't released any details on the search for a gunman but stay with news 4 and we will bring you the latest as we get it. back to you. it's 5:05 now and developing this morning new reports that trump campaign officials had repeated contacts with russian intelligence officials in the year before the election. at the heart of this report are phone records and calls that were intercepted at the same time they discovered evidence that russia was disrupting the election by hacking into the democratic committee. nbc news has not confirmed the details of the times report. the fallout over michael flynn's resignation is growing this morning. members of congress want to know more about his ties to russia. meanwhile u.s. officials

officer justified the shooting saying the victim was reaching for his gun. he was licensed to carry a weapon. fairfax county officials are promising more transparency from their police department. richard schott is a 27-year veteran of the fbi. he will be monitoring fairfax county police. he will be a watchdog monitoring cases where an officer's use of force leads to injury or death. this is one of the ways the county is responding to the fatal shooting of john gear outside of his home. in just three weeks from now, people will once again be able to explore

but for now it still feels cold outside. a windchill of 34 across the area. where there's rain coming down it's noticeably milder. light rain in st. mary's county. 41 degrees. planning out the day then, 30s and 40s now. not a big rise in temperatures. most areas, mid to upper 40s. a lot of clouds around at least through the first half of the day. gusty northwest winds will come in behind it setting the stage for a rare cold day tomorrow. there on radar, this little plume of moisture is pointed to our south so we could get a little light rain around washington but better rain chances down to the south of the city and future weather, little opportunity for some sprinkles and showers the front half of the day in washington. then later today we may get a little quick burst of a rain shower which could include a

well, yesterday the fairfax county police, they elevated her case to a critically missing person. and our reporters went to the family home to interview her mom and it was during that interview that this happened. there was a knock on the door and in walked venus. she said she came home because she knew her mother was so worried. and coming up at 6:00 this morning we are going to tell you how this case is connected to a murder in prince william county. now back to you. >> thank you. a grieving father is pleading for answers in his son's murder this morning. he was shot to death inside his car on monday. there were at least two bullet holes in the driver's side door. his father henry wants people to know that his 28-year-old son was a good man who was preparing to be a father himself. he had a tough time holding back tears. >> all i want to know is who did this to

>> detectives are still working to find a motive and a suspect. we now know that it was intentional when a driver hit and killed an armed man at a shopping center. prince george's county police say nathan mckinnon had an ak-47. sources tell news 4 that the driver knew the victim who was his daughter's boyfriend. it is now 5:33. good news in northern virginia about this fire that sparked nearly two weeks ago. finally the flames are out at the waste energy facility in lorton. firefighters have been working around the clock to put that fire out but it was difficult because there was so much trash. still not clear how the fire started. a huge push in loudoun county to get a principal his job back. the message from

welcome back. a teacher who was arrested for child abuse inside a school is no longer facing charges. that's because of this potentially upsetting video from the orlando area. police said the teacher put a 15-year-old in a choke hold and dragged him down the stairs. bu

there are actually two similar cases but in one they didn't get the machine. first, three suspects in a van stole an atm from an exon station in laurel. in another case the suspects damaged an atm, and they're not saying whether those cases are linked. you may be getting ready to head out to work or school and on the way you may go oempb a bridge, but how safe is that bridge? a new study is shedding some light on that answer. >> we're live with more information. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, you know, the bridge you cross every day and we all seem to cross at least one of them in our travels could be on a long list of those in need of repair. a federal analysis found more than 1,200 of the bridges across the dmv are deemed structurally defishts. we put up a few of them for you to see. re
