december. many of the robberies are happening in one specific area. we're talking about the part bordered by queens chapel road. the suspects are targeting latino men leaving for work at this time of morning. the robberies are happening between 4:00 and 6:00 a.m. on weekdays and more frequently on fridays. this is making life for those living in that area uneasy. >> from nowen i'll be watching who's behind me, who's in front of me, who's on the side because it's terrible. >> police believe there could be more victims but some may be reluctant to come forward. >> this morning we're learning how two recent murders and three disappearances are tied to one dangerous gang in northern virginia. 15-year-old's body was found in springfield. police zeroed in on the

while investigating a different murder in pcounty. a 21-year-old man was killed and left in the potomac river last month. everyone involved in both crimes has ties to the same gang. and officials say these crimes show how gangs are recruiting teenagers to carry out their violence. >> justin finch live at fairfax police head quarts on what they're trying to do to top this problem. >> reporter: they're teaming up to take down these gangs. officials say these gang influences are closer than you may think. now, this all comes through a new regional report on gangs that focuses on ms 13 finding that it is increasingly recruiting juveniles and young adults especially those that speak spanish and there has been an increase in violent activity. the mother of reyes

daughter was targeted by ms 13 before she was found dead in springfield last weekend. they haven't confirmed that direct tie but they find that gangs are recruiting in our high schools and middle schools promising protection and security. and if anyone sees something suspicious on campus, they are asked to speak up. >> the gang crime knows no boundaries. and this is difficult to combat, but we have great detectives, great advocates who support our work and we will be tireless in making arrests. >> reporter: and given the wide range of gangs in the reyes and other cases in the area police are asking for as many tips as possible. we are live at police headquarters. back in to you. >> if you're worry about your child falling into the wrong crowd, here's a few things to look out for. are they

talking to known gang members. have they made a drastic change in appearance? and if they insist on wearing certain color combinations. you can find a complete list of warning signs on our nbc washington app. and right now in loudoun county the sheriff's office is searching for this missing 16-year-old. her name is stefani lieu sucero. she left her home on february 9th. call the sheriff's office if you know where to find her. and the search is on for this man. he's 59 years old. his name is turner joseph stevenson and police say he has dementia. he was last seen on tuesday around 4:00 p.m. he was leaving his residence at apartments in silver spring. i just posted this picture on twitter and facebook. call police if you have any information. >> firefighters are watching hot spots after a massive multialarm fire. take a look at the flames here and the smoke. the flames erupted at

warehouse in baltimore late last night. the fire and thick black smoke forced crew to shut down streets and light rail in the area. the wind is taking the blame for a house fire in arlington. the homeowners told firefighters they had a fire pit going in the backyard last night and the winds kicked up sending flames toward the house and catching the siding on fire. no one was hurt in this incident. now, wind should not be a factor today, but the sun will. right? >> you betcha'. sun's up before 7:00 a.m. this morning between now and then it is awfully cold out there. temperatures in the teens, 20s to around 30 degrees now but yes, indeed, full sunshine coming our way this afternoon. today we go back above average and that weekend is looking warmer all the time. stay with us. >> zika virus test botched. first, a day without immigrants. now a

examined again. now, so far two false negatives have been discovered. those two pregnant women, but health officials say there will likely be more. >> assuming there may be some in there and we are also hopeful that the ma jor oi of those will continue to be retesting as being negative. >> reporter: and those two women have had their babies. it's unknown whether or not there were any health problems with respect to those babies, those deliveries. now, the botched tests were done between july 14th of last year and december the 14th. testing, retesting understoway could take four week to get those results back. back to you. well, given the developmentes in the district we wanted to remind you of the signs and symptoms of zika. red eyes, fever, joint pain or rash, people can also e

symptoms are usually mild and many people don't get sick enough to go to the hospital. symptoms last a week. zika is commonly spread through mosquito bites from mother to child, through sex or through blood transfusion. zika poses a much greater risk for unborn babies. it can cause birth defects including microcephaly. women are discouraged from traveling to areas where zika is pref len prevalent. doctors say it's not too late to get vaccinated. the flu vaccine is nearly 50% effective this year. they say the vaccination has reduced the number of flu associated medical visits by roughly half. health care

>> last year five students took their own lives and now a theater group is reaching out to those families hoping to save a life. >> reporter: between the singing, the movements and remembering their lines, it isn't much of a reach to say these cast members are stars. but the real star of this show isn't in the room at all. will robinson, 17 years old, a ge junior. >> he was the guy giving people hugs in the hall in the morning the cheer them up. he was the guy that so many people went to with their problems. >> reporter: nobody knew but beneath that smile was a form of depression and in january of last year he took his own life. >> we didn't realize what was going on with him

and an easy commute for everybody feeling the pain of going to work. you can see moving along quite well here this morning nice and green. 66 here, inbound, outbound, no big worries there and montrose road, no problem northbound or southbound on 270. police in northern virginia are raising concerns about violent gangs that appear to be targeting students in schools. a regional law enforcement task force put together a new threat assessment and one of the gangs they're focusing on is ms 13. erika traveled to el salvador and she joins us more with what she learned. >> we were invited by the northern gang task force and we learned that the problems that police are seeing in central america are making their way to virginia.

ms 13 is a gang that start t in l.a. sergeant of the police department told me that over the past ten to 15 years the gang has started moving into schools recruiting members as young as 13 even. social media playing a huge role in how gang members in central america communicate with members in the states. some of the video you were just seeing there was when we were able to enter the detentions there in san salvador. we'll have more on how police are trying to combat this problem. back over to you guys. all right. thank you. it's 5:32 now. a prince george's county police officer will be sentenced today after taking inappropriate pictures of unsuspecting women. he pled guilty to the charges last month. police say they began their investigation of him after an offduty officer said sims tried to take a picture of

police found inappropriate photos on his cell phone. also today, two prince george's county police officers have been indicted for misconduct. 14 year veteran george merkell is accused of striking a woman during a call. prosecutors also said he had a relationship with a prostitute while on duty last year. both men have been suspended from the job. take a look at this car. it is riddled with 13 bullet holes after being shot at during rush shower on route 50. police are trying to figure out who shot at that car yesterday afternoon and why. police had to shut down eastbound 50 for nearly five hours yesterday. the three men inside that car being treated for gunshot wounds but they are expected to be okay. the 95 express lanes have been given the green light to extend north to the d.c. line and south beyond

here's what you need to know if you drive either of those areas. hov lanes will change to toll lanes. that means if you don't have three people in the car you will have to use the lanes at all times and pay for it. the conversion will be complete by 2019. the expansion could help a bottleneck area in the area. right now the express lanes end at garrisonville road and traffic backs up in both the toll lanes and the regular lanes of 95. the expansion is expected to open in 2018. voters are electing a new governor and democrats have the inside track for the job. it says if the general election were today, the democratic candidates for governor would beat all the republican candidates running. the democrats are pretty much deadlocked for the nomination right now. the poll says 61% of voters have not decided which one of

we haven't seen any reports that anyone was inside. there is going to be a big cleanup effort once the sun comes out today. the wind helped fuel this house fire in arlington. the homeowners told firefighters they had put a fire pit in the back last night when the winds started to kick up catching the siding on fire. no one was hurt in this incident either. if you see flames like this, most of us would probably get pretty worried but there's an elderly man who was trapped inside a six alarm fire and he stayed calm. that's the attitude fire officials hope others will have if you end up in a situation like this. the man casually recalled his escape after recovering his injuries with the firefighter that appeared like an angel he said and saved his life. >> i felt safe. >> it never crossed my mind that we weren't going to accomplish what we set out to do. >> there was only one way down here, a dangerous rope rescue that was c

66 is ramp to the inner loop of the beltway, take a look here, right side of the roadway is blocked. we have just the left side getting through so this is really causing some slowdowns there this morning. no big worries there. on metro, single tracking on the yellow line through reagan national airport, so a warning for you there. travel times, 270 south, no big issues. top of the beltway, 95 over to 270, you can go 60 miles an hour. 66 inbound again, starting to get very slow because of the problem we just showed you there. 66 as you're approach the beltway. so from fairfax county parkway to the beltway going to take you 23 minutes. 95 to the beltway is okay. 5:54 now. today is our final day of tax week here on news 4 today. >> we are working for you, keeping you informed about a major problem affecting millions of taxpayers.

bills tied to the affordable care act and there are a couple of different versions making the rounds right now. susan hogan explains what some people are getting in the mail. >> scammers are sending fraudulent versions of what's called the cp 2000 notices for tax year 2015. here are a few warning signs that a notice is a fake. if it is from an austin, texas address, if the notice says the issue is related to the aca and if it lists the letter number in the payment voucher as 105c and requests checks made out to the irs and be sent to the austin processing center. bottom line, whether you get a notice or a call from someone claiming to be from the irs, if you have any question about the legitimacy of it call the irs directly to verify that information. don't use the number listed on that letter or the caller
