the bizarre dispute between president donald trump and sweden. the war of words escalating. >> announcer: news4 at 11:00 starts now. a family losing everything to an early morning fire, but things could have been a lot worse. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm erika gonzalez. a police officer raced to the scene and helped residents escape the flames. news4's darcy spencer spoke to people who are thanking the officer for helping save their lives. >> reporter: the family that lived in this home on persimmon ridge road in clarksburg had just moved in a couple of weeks ago. now everything is gone, even the present from their daughter's recent birthday. neighbors are already pitching in, collecting money, toys, and clothing for the family. >> we had a carful of donations already ready for them, and they were just overjoyed with the support that they received. >> repor t

everyone was asleep. the parents and their two children escaped. montgomery county police officer john roark was on duty nearby and responded to the call. he woke up the families on either side of the home and made sure they got out. >> there was a big plume from the back corner. when i first got here, it was pretty significant. like i say, this is the first house i went to. by the time i left the front porch to go knock on that end door down there, the whole roof was engulfed, and the second floor was blazing. it went up quick. >> reporter: the heat from the flames melted the siding on homes next to and behind the house that was destroyed. >> we feel very blessed. >> reporter: this woman lives in one of those homes. she said she and her family were asleep when officer roark woke them up. >> i say thank you. great job and much appreciated. >> reporter: a montgomery fire and rescue spokesman says the fire was caused by improperly discarded smoking materials

the loss, $700,000. a family devastated, escaping with only the clothing on their backs, trying to figure out a way forward. darcy spencer, news4. we now know the name of the man shot and killed at a house party in arlington, and police are still looking for his killer, somebody they're calling armed and dangerous. arlington county police say michael gray from manassas was shot during the party on north 29th street. he died at the hospital. tonight they're looking for jason johnson, a d.c. resident. they say he's wanted for his role in the murder. the shooting has left residents rattled. >> this is an extremely quiet neighborhood. really family-oriented, really, really quiet. never a disturbance. just really out of character for the neighborhood. >> the suspect, jason

was last known to be heading towards maryland, and we've had his picture up on our nbc washington app and a story there that you can see and share as well. police say that you should dial 911 immediately if you know where he is, and they say do not approach him. well, what another wonderful day out there. i think everybody was out and about today, walking around, taking in some of the city sights. oh, man, if you didn't get out today, i think we're going to have a couple more days where you can enjoy this wonderful weather. i mean it is february 19th, and we are still in the 50s right now, upper 50s. 58 here in washington. you can see we've got some 40s here. 49 in manassas, we've had some temperatures already falling into the low 50s right now. i think we're all going to take it into the 40s tonight with clear skies. it is such a wonderful night out there, and it's going to continue to be wonderful as we go through the overnight, even into tomorrow morning. now, temperatures are actually going to fall into the 40s

come right back up. for your monday, we've got a few dips in the forecast. but do we have any winter left on that ten-day forecast? we're going to show you those temperatures. that's all coming up in about 15 minutes. >> all right, thank you. we'll see you then. d.c. police arrested a woman for murder after finding the victim unconscious in a closet. they made that discovery on friday at a home on 21st street in northeast. officers found 63-year-old walter clark in that closet. he had been beaten and died at the hospital. 76-year-old thomasine bennett is now charged with first-degree murder. according to the police report, bennett told officers that she hit clark with a bat. new at 11:00, lights out at the washington monument. earlier tonight, national park service had to have e electricians go out there to help turn the lights back on, and they managed to do so by about 7:00 tonight. those red aviation lights worked normally

there's been a problem with the lights. the washington monument, if you will remember, has been closed since august due to elevator problems. it's slated to reopen in 2019. the trump administration is poised to roll out a revised version of its travel ban this week. tonight we are getting our first glimpse of a draft memo outlining mr. trump's new plan. the white house saying the memos are just suggestions. but as nbc's kelly o'donnell reports, immigrants rights groups are already concerned. >> reporter: behind the scenes at the president's mar-a-lago home in palm beach where a high-level help wanted sign is out, president trump is interviewing four job candidates today to replace the fired national security adviser, michael flynn. all with military and national security backgrounds. the white house chief of staff insisted the president's choice will not be forced to keep

council team. >> the president has said very clearly that the new nsa director will have total and complete say over the makeup of the nsc. >> reporter: the trump administration is also poised to roll out new enforcement plans on immigration. >> general kelly, now secretary kelly, he's really doing the job. you're seeing it. >> reporter: new draft memos signed by secretary kelly from the department of homeland security read like a blueprint for the president's priorities. at a saturday night rally, mr. trump emphasized deporting criminals. >> get them the hell out of here, bring them back to where they came from. >> reporter: the draft memos recommend hiring 10,000 officers and agents for immigration and customs enforcement, deputizing qualified local law enforcement to assist with deportations. other priorities, expedite the removal of undocumented immigrants in the u.s. for two years or less. undocumented

there wasn't. president trump tweeted today that his comment was referring to a fox news report friday which detailed the impact of immigration in sweden. within hours, the embassy of sweden tweeted back. it looks forward, they say, to informing the u.s. administration about swedish immigration and integration policies, end quote. d.c. police need your help finding two young girls. both missing from neighborhoods in northeast. this is 16-year-old talisha cole. she went missing from maryland avenue near 10th street in northeast. then there's torri marie gibson, missing since saturday morning. she was last seen in the area of 6th and buchanan streets. she's just 11 years old. she's smiling here in this picture. you can see she's got braces with blue bands on her teeth. if you've seen either one of these young ladies, please call d.c. police. a close call for two children and their

friend on a snowmobile and told them that the ice was solid, so he went ahead. and there you go. more dramatic video now. a small plane crashing into a new jersey neighborhood. it did a lot of damage, but incredibly nobody was killed. and all of the homes were spared. watch this. the single engine piper went down just before 10:00 this morning. it narrowly missed a gas station. the plane mangled some power lines and damaged parked cars. the pilot was alert and talking to rescuers despite the chaotic scene. >> the vibration was like a rumbling like an earthquake. i thought it was like a tanker truck. you know when a tanker couldn't stop for a light and all of a sudden it just boom. >> it was so loud, and everyone was just in shock. then everyone started screaming. >> that is so scary. nobody on the ground was hurt. the pilot went to the hospital with a broken leg. an invga

years. kerry sanders, nbc news at the kennedy space center. >> just incredible. let's switch gears now. a federal election commissioner told us the agency she works for is broken. now she's quitting. commissioner ann ra develop sent her letter of resignation to president trump effective march 1st. the fec is supposed to investigate complaints, but back in september, the i-team shows it takes an average of 22 months for the commissioners to even decide if they will investigation. and the commissioners' vote is often along party lines, resulting in a deadlock. in her resignation letter, she said the campaign finance system should promote citizen engagement and participation in the political process. she then urged president trump to prioritize campaign finance reform. new tonight, a telephone once owned by hitler sold for more than $200,000 at a maryland auction today. bidding started at
