newsham to be the chief of police. he has been acting as interim chief since cathy lanier left. he rose up through the ranks, commander of the second district, promoted to assistant chief in charge of office of professional responsibility and later headed the investigative services bureau, most recently as the interim chief he handled security during the inauguration. again, sources telling news 4 that peter newsham is going to be named by the mayor any minute now. we'll inside and we'll be bringing you the latest and i'll hae comments from the mayor and new chief coming up at 11:30. >> megan thank you. developing right now, we're learning a 21-year-old man found dead in the potomac river was murdered by gang members. prince william county arrest arrested five people for the rd

police say he was killed for posing as an ms 13 gang leaders and also revealed 15-year-old alexandra reyes was the last person to see him alive. it was through the investigation into his death that police were able to solve her murder. she was found dead in springfield earlier this month. in southeast washington, police officers spent the morning scouring tal bert street for evidence. the suspect rammed the officer's cruiser as he got out during a traffic stop. the officer shot at the suspect as the car drove off. it is not clear whether anyone was hit. the officer was taken to the hospital. northbound 295 after a crash that really tied up traffic this morning. our crews were at the scene as drivers were being diverted most of the morning. several cars were involved in this crash just after 3:00 a.

days in a row with mid-70s and normal highway down here 49 degrees and look at these records. we could be within a few degrees of record high temperatures. coming up we'll talk more about how long this is going to last and rain for the weekend straight ahead. >> sheena, thank you. i murder in frederick, maryland happened between two neighbors in the same apartment complex on west south street last night. men both lived there and police say there was some kind of incident that started in an apartment and went outside. after the shooting harriday locked himself in the garage and turned himself a few hours after that. he was charged with two counts of murder along with weapons charges. >> two people escaped a fire but it's not clear when they'll be able to get back inside this home. these flames seen all down the road in fort washington. if you live in that area you may still be able to smell that smoke. the fire spread to the

garage and looks like it left a lot of damage behind. we don't know how the fire started but when we do find out we'll let you know right here on news 4 and through our nbc washington app. we're learning more about the house fire in lorton that claimed the life of a little boy. fairfax county five says the 5-year-old died in the house fire on tuesday night. investigators say that he started the fire while playing with a lighter in the garage. his mom and two neighbors, a retired firefighter and off-duty firefighter tried to rescue him but flames made it impossible. two dogs and two pet birds were also in the fire. >> the metro board is meeting to talk about how safe you are at metro stations on metro buses and on trains. the findings of the annual safety report. another key issue, metro's money problems. the transit agency predicts a $125 million short fall in

parking. fewer people are using metro which means less money to keep the system running. adam is at the meet and follow him on twilter for updates. watch out for more red light cameras in fairfax. new cameras are being installed at four locations this spring. may street at woodland drive and lee highway and jermantown road and both the eastbound and westbound side. traffic signs will be put up when the cameras are activated. right now secretary of state rex tillerson is in mexico, expected to meet with the country's foreign secretary at this hour. the trip is being seen as an attempt to smooth over tensions sparked by president trump's plans to build a border wall. while the president insists mexico will pay for it, president enrique pena nieto says it's not going to happen.

international anti-doping system. challenges its faces and ways it can be improved. a new health warning for the 15 million americans who use a specific prescription drug for acid reflux and heart burn and ulcers, there are dangerous consequences if you do not follow specific instructions. kristen dahlgren has more. rpts when kim hingele's daughter told her to take a pill for acid reflux. >> take it once a day. >> reporter: she had no idea later that year her kidneys would be silently shutting down. doctors have known pro ton pump inhibiters sold over the counter under brand names like nex yum and pref sid can cause kidney damage in some patients. a new study focusing on prescription strength ppis says more than half of those who develop kidney problems show no obvious warning

that the martin luther king junior memorial library in d.c. is a big music venue. the library will close for a major renovation and won't reopen until 2020. your last chance to hear live music in the library is tomorrow night, for the benefit and release party for the d.c. public libraries fundation. joining me now, two people who helped head up the project, anna furman and kevin bailey. you're really celebrating the release of which compilation album. can you tell me more about this. >> yeah, so alb rock the stacks is a compilation album and party and it is a fundraiser for the library foundation and came about when my friend annie bailey berman, kevin's cousin and i were serving together on the board and wanted to shine the light on the creative community in .c

musicians and writers who are so much a part of the fabric of our city but don't always get the attention that the politics and federal government do. we wanted to highlight that as well as highlight the fact that the libraries are such an amazing resource in the city and they are really fun things to do there. creative things to do. people tend to still think of it as a quiet stuffy place. we thought having a big party among the books called rock the stacks would be a way to high light that. annie passed away last spring but we have brought together friends and family who have put together, she is the alb of rock the stacks. >> you're her cousin. tell us about the music and how it reflects her personalty and passion. >> exceptional making introductions and making creative people together. we use the inspiration to get as many on board. her friends and assoat

warm weather may have you thinking of planning a beach trip. as it turns out, one of the top beaches in the country is just a few hours away. >> that's right, congratulations ocean city, maryland came in tenth on trip adviser's travel choices. the winners were base on reviews and ratings collected during the past year. siesta beach, florida, nabs the top spot. most of the others are in florida and hiawaii. we posted this on nbc washington facebook page in case you'd like to share it as well. sheena is here to gloet about the fact she's from one of those beautiful areas. >> i post this on face book, my people are saying they are

really surprised about ocean city. >> i haven't been to ocean city yet. i've been to virginia beach, the beaches in new jersey, but i will say, siesta key beach on the list, it's south of tampa where i'm from. beautiful, beautiful beach. the sand is just this nice white sand, shells all over and water is beautiful. anyways the weather outside probably having you think about the beach and it should because temperatures will be in the mid-70s this afternoon. it will feel more like may when we start thinking about those kind of plans. 64 is the temperature right now in the district, look at warring ton, 69 degrees and gaithersburg coming in at 70 degrees. we are unseasonably warm today, a lot of people wondering where is the arctic air. well it's way up here in canada. the reason why it's not going to be down here for a long period of time is because of the air currents right now. there's nothing to pull it down. watch what's going to happen as go

24 people are now facing charges for the widespread protest in southern california. this is video from anaheim where hundreds of people were in the streets last night. these were the protests in l.a. protesting against los angeles police, this video show anz off-duty lapd officer firing his gun during a fight with some teenagers. police say the argument started when the officer asked the kids to get off his lawn. the officer says he heard one of the kids say i'll shoot you and the teenager says that he was saying i'll sue you. the officer involved is now on administrative leave. news right now for the police department here in d.c. as of 20 minutes ago the interim chief is now the chief full-time. megan mcgrath was there for the announcement and joins us live at the wilson building with more. megan? >> reporter: well,

may mayor bowser wanted to pick someone that the residents of d.c. know they can rely on and trust and someone who understands and believes in community policing. just a little while ago, less than a half hour ago, she named inter interim chief peter newsham, a familiar face who joined the force back in 1989 as a rookie and rose up throw the ranks. chief newsham says he's honored and humbled by the position. he recognizes this is a very coveted position in policing and as chief he's committed to serving all of the citizens of the district of columbia. let's listen to a few of the comments made by the mayor and chief. >> since taking over as interim chief, peter has proven that he is committed to transparency and being available to his officers in the members of the public. >> when you call us, w
