commute on this friday morning. fingers crossed. we know you'll update us on that in just a minute. first chuck and sheena have some great weather news to kick off the weekend. >> it is fantastic weather. >> no complaints from us, that's for sure. i've made up a new word for today a fan tabulous friday. it's a word because we're using it. it's what it's going to feel like. flirting with record high temperatures yet again on what is likely to finish up as our warmest february on record. some saturday afternoon showers and thunderstorms are a possibility and sunday, blustery and cold. it will be a sunday shocker and some much more needed rain chances coming our way next week. for today all sunshine all the dime with a bit of a gusty southerly breeze but afternoon highs today well up into the mid and upper 70s. sheena is talking more about those saturday issues. >> we have some issues on

good. second half, temperatures on the milder side but we have rain moving in and some thunderstorms possibly. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning we're looking at a very mild start. upper 50s. again, by noon, mid-60s but we start to see the rain getting closer and by 3:00 p.m. we're talking about thunderstorms possibly and that will be the early part of the afternoon and quickly cooling down once the rain leaves. as of now it does look like the timing of this rain is only going to be within a few hours so your saturday night looks on the drier side but it will be getting colder as we go into sunday so keep that in mind, very different temperatures across your weekend. let's look at that friday commute this morning. >> so right now, taking a look here at the beltway, inner loop at gw parkway, a crash blocking the right lane. northbound 95 in springfield, brand new crash there. no doubt going to cause some problems if it sticks around too long.

quite good. still have this work zone northbound 295 at benning road. work zone there blocking that right lane here this morning and 270 at montrose. no problems northbound or southbound. back with travel times in ten minutes. thank you. now back to that breaking news we've been telling you about this morning. two d.c. police officers are in the hospital now after being shot by a suspect in the trinidad section of northeast. >> we have team coverage of the shooting from the scene to the hospital. in just a few minutes megan will have more on how this unfolded but we begin with news 4's justin finch at med star washington with an update on the officers' conditions. >> reporter: eun, we know there was a very fast effort to save those officers moments after they were shot. both were brought here to med star washington. both we now know suffering from lower body wounds after being shot. both are in stable condition. among the many visitors was mayor bowser. she

now acting police chief peter newshan stopped by as well. both officers did come here to med star at least one we hear in the back of a police cruiser. one officer we now know did require surgery and we hear that may have been to dislodge a bullet. a second officer was treated here as well and as they recover, they will be speaking with detectives. >> the two best witnesses that we have that we know of right now are the two officers and they're at the hospital being treated. >> reporter: and overnight the d.c. police union treasurer speaking. back in to you. and we continue our team coverage now with megan mcgrath. >> you're in the neighborhood where this happened there in northeast. i know

exactly what happened but what do we know so far? >> reporter: well, just a few minutes ago i spoke to a woman who lives in the neighborhood and she was actually lying down last night when she heard about four bangs. at first she thought it was fireworks, but of course, that turned out not to be the case. it was a shooting. a shooting that happened behind me here at the intersection of holbrook and morse street. it happened at about 10:40 last night. officers with a crime suppression team, they were in the area for shots that had been fired earlier in the evening. they were at this intersection when shots rang out again. two officers were hit. the suspect was killed and police said that they did find a gun that they believe belongs to the suspect. they found that gun here on the scene. anc commissioner cathy henderson, she heard the shots from her home. she was upset to learn what had happened. >> i turn

said two officers were shot and i'm -- i'm shocked. i'm disgusted. this is just unbelievable. >> reporter: and there are still a lot of details that need to be sorted out. we don't know exactly what happened in the moments before the shooting obviously being able to talk to the two wounded police officers will help with all of that, but we are expecting to get an update later on today. back to you all. >> thank you. five minutes after the 6:00 hour right now, and this shooting we know happened just hours after d.c. major bowser announced her choice for police chief. >> we continue now with erika gonzales at the live desk. >> you heard from acting chief peter newsham a moment ago and you probably heard his name a lot in the last 24 hours. this was his first night after getting officially tapped for the new job. he still has to be confirmed by

expected to happen next month. mayor bowser mentioned how he involved police involved shootings. he joined the police department back in 1989. he became assistant chief in 2002 and he's got a law degree from the university of maryland and currently lives in ward 6. here's the question for you. what about body camera footage? do we have any? we'll talk about that in a few more minutes. stay with us for that. this is not the only shooting we're following this morning. the shooting involving these officers brings the total number of people shot in d.c. last night to seven. four people were hurt in three shootings on wheeler road southeast. that happened just within two hours of each other. one witness we spoke with said he heard eight gunshots. police have not released any information on the victims or the suspects. it is 6:06. today president trump is set to take the stage at the

conference. the white house has been rel wented at the conference. you're throwing a little rain, that means we're already worried about mosquitos and the zika virus. the results are in for some 200 women who had to be retested here in the district after a botched batch of testing. seven more pregnant women who were told they were not infected with zika were told they had a false negative. that brings the total number of women in d.c. given the incorrect test results to nine. the race is on to develop a vaccine to protect us from the zika virus. a vaccine that would provide protection from all diseases transmitted by mosquitos. the top

now to that breaking news we've been following for you all morning. two police officers are in the hospital after being shot by a suspect in the trinidad section of northeast washington. >> justin finch joins us live from outside the hospital where fellow officers have been breathing a sigh of relief really this morning. >> reporter: much earlier we saw officers hugging, shaking hands, a true sense of relief after getting some terrifying news of two officers shot. now from police sources we hear those officers are in stable condition. there were many visitors here overnight. among them major bowser and acting police chief peter newsham. police are telling us that both wounded officers are suffering from lower body wounds. one did require surgery. a second officer here was treated here overnight. both were brought here awake and able to breathe which were promising signs for their recovery. again, we are hearing that both officers are here in stable condition

and both will speak with detectives about the shooting that injured them. back in to you. all right. thank you. 6:15 now and there's a possibilities that we could see video about how this all happened. >> we've heard a lot of news about body cameras many the past. what they could mean in this situation. >> well, all d.c. police officers now use body cameras. the chief says the force has more body cameras than any other department in the country. there are 2,600 cameras. when officers respond to calls they are supposed to turn them on. so there is a good chance there is video from one of the officers who was hurt overnight. back over to you guys. >> a woman is dead after being hit and killed in reston last night. chopper 4 was over the scene of this deadly crash. police say she was walking along reston parkway. the driver involved in the accident stayed on the scene. more maryland lawmakers a

right now. it is 6:30 and it is a busy morning as we're following a shooting investigation in the district. >> normally we would get straight to the weather and traffic, but first the breaking news. around 10:40 last night officers with a crime suppression team were investigating a call of shots fired. then shots rang out again. two officer were hit. >> police recovered the gun at the scene. they believe it belonged to the suspect. how those officers are doing. >> and take a look atz this. this is the inner loop of the beltway. we have the crash on the right side of the roadway. the problem is we still have a pretty big backup. it's gotten better in the last couple of
