media, while the white house defends a decision to keep certain reporters out of an informal briefing. and we'll show you how people are raising money tonight to research rare forms of cancer. news 4 at 11 starts now. good evening, everybody, a d.c. police officer is home from the hospital tonight, another still getting treated after they were both shot about 24 hours ago. it was breaking news as we came on the air last night, two officers hit, a suspect killed while we wait for police to review and potentially release the officer's body cam video, tonight we're learning more about the man who died. news 4 is at the scene of the shooting last night in northeast d.c., jackie? >> reporter: doreen, we've learned this man had an extensive criminal history. timothy williams is the man seen on the ground in this video of the shooting posted on

portion where shots are fired because of the graphic nature, court records shows williams, with a criminal history dating back to at least 19 # 9, he was sentenced to at least eight years in prison after crashing a car into a police cruiser, clocked by radar at 143 miles an hour. in 1994 he pled guilty to armed robbery and weapons charges in prince george's county, and sentenced to ten years in prison. what he was doing in the street last night and the exact circumstances that happened remain unclear. >> i can't say i know everything, but i know exactly what happened and i caution people not to jump to conclusions until they have heard after the evidence and gathered all the evidence. >> reporter: police say all the evidence they heard, and the crime suppression team, they were called to the area last night. this man says he is a relative of timothy

>> i want to see justice, i want them to thoroughly investigate what happened. why he was shot. >> police tell us the gun was recovered and has been taken into evidence. live in northeast, jackie benson, news 4. jackie, thank you, tonight we're a step closer to learning the name of the police officer who shot and killed a man in herndon last month. we were told the officer wouldn't be at risk if the name was released. police say they willñi release e man after they speak with a federal judge. the investigators say the suspect shot his brothers and refused police orders to drop a knife he was holding. last year fairfax county changed police policy and said it would release the names of officers involved in deadly shootings in no moreh

forecast, doreen. >> thank you, a woman's son is dead after angelique chase admitted shooting her son, christopher perry, after a heated argument. the suspect's grandson was in the house at the time and said he tried to break it up. soon after he heard a gunshot and then dialled 911. her son died at the hospital, police say it was another example of domestic violence in the county. >> and with the underlying stresses that families are under, the lack of support that so many of our working families have. >> angelique chase is held without bond on second degree murder charges. i'm chris lawrence here at the live desk where president trump is escalating his war with the media, and insinuating

reporters pose a threat to the country, and he said fake news medianolo media knowingly doesn't report the news. the president was speaking to the largest gathering of conservative activists in the country, and told them unethical reporters are phoney, peddle fake news and should not be allowed to use anonymous sources, but the press reports that they should be allowed to use anonymous sources to protect safety, in just a few hours, several news outlets were blocked from a media briefing. tonight we're getting a look from behind the scenes as white house press secretary sean spicer explains why. >> they're not here because you're unhappy with the reporting, why are they not in here? >> because we added a pool and expanded it and asked for some folks to cover it.

we've actually gone above and beyond with making ourselves and team more accessible than prior to any other administration, i think you can take it to the bank. >> now president trump did say not all reporters are bad, but he did promise to do something about the fake news. and political director chuck todd joined us on the set during news 4 at 6:00 tonight, we asked him about the president's constant back and forth with the media. he said the white house has made it clear that is part of a deliberate strategy. obviously, it's been good for the base and it fires up his supporters. the problem with this is that his supporters don't make up a majority of the country. they're somewhere between 35 and 40%, when you do this, you start to do selective censorship, which is what they did today, keeping out cnn, there are folks in the middle saying yeah, maybe the media makes me mad sometimes

fight with the islamic state. he was arrested last january after driving his friend to the airport in richmond. and metro trying to get safety back on track, the troubled transit agency wants to limit overtime for its workers to prevent train and bus oper e operator fatigue. it wants to prevent operators from working several days in a row, but metro's bargaining with the union requires them to give employees as much overtime as they want. right now the transit pays employees not to work extra days to avoid safety concerns. this year, hundreds of people across the area will work up a sweat to raise money for cancer research. the annual cycle for survival started in the district, continuing on sunday with events that could raise more than a million bucks. news 4's shomari stone has our story. >> i'm

she is a survivor of domestic violence. instead of keeping the struggle to herself, though, a local woman says telling her story is like therapy. and now she is amplifying the voice her abuser once tried to silence. news 4's erica gonzales continues our safe at home campaign with this next story. >> i'm sorry, i recall a lot of those, i'm sorry, i'm sorry -- i will never do it again. >> but he did do it again. tameka bradshaw has lived through domestic violence, she was 17 years old, when a much

her children, first put his hands on her. >> the beatings started in the living room and ended in the hallway, you crawled my way to the bathroom and he noticed my face, that is when he stopped. >> when he saw your face, he saw what he did to her. >> reporter: and her abuser did in fact serve time on more than one occasion for the beatings. >> every time one black eye or busted lip, bloody nose -- went away, and clear up, there was another one. >> reporter: some days she fought back. eventually making matters worse. >> he said -- if i ever take his kids from him he will find me and kill me. >> reporter: she took him seriously. and made a decision she still wrestles with to this day. >> i said i'm walking out there. alive. and then i'm going to come back

>> reporter: tameka lived on people's couches until she could regain stability and safety and when she does she regained her relationship with her kids but it has not been easy, the children spend time with both their parents. tameka keeps her communication with her ex limited. >> you at some point have to say you're tired and i got tired. >> reporter: almost 40 now, tameka says she is a different person. >> and i love myself more than i ever did before. >> reporter: so different, in fact, she now helps d.c. police and the domestic violence unit by sharing her story. >> and sometimes things can happen to you and it's a message. it happened to me because i needed to save her. i needed to save him. >> reporter: officer lisa warel knows her well. >> the road she is traveling i would have to take my hat and badge off to her because that is a super hero to me. >> reporter:

"keeping the faith" airs at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and on our nbc washington app. >> while we spent this day enjoying the springtime warmth, parts of the midwest are still dealing with snow. look at this, a winter wonderland in rochester, minnesota, look how the snow came down making it tough for drivers all day long. maybe not so much of a winter wonderland if you have to shovel it. is that storm system for us? >> it is, the same storm system is heading our way but we're getting the warmer sector of it, bringing us a chance of thunderstorm activity during the day tomorrow, some of the storms could be on the strong side, so tomorrow really a day of change. and it's going to be hour by hour so take a look at this

so many people out and about tonight at area restaurants, the restaurants love it. they were opening up all the windows and doors, temperatures right now still 61 degrees at 11:00 p.m. winds out of the north at 17 miles an hour, it's still 64 in leesburg, if these were the highs we would still say look how warm it is. no rain now, but take a look just back to the west, again, our area for the most part on the clear side. here is the line of thunderstorms, there is a severe thunderstorm watch in parts of ohio, this line is what is moving our way. now the snow still back here towards minnesota, wisconsin and making its way towards chicago. you can tell there is much colder air back here, take a look, 80 degrees in columbus, ohio, 81 in nashville, look at chicago, 40 degrees, 74 here, 34 degree temp

and only a couple hundred miles and we're going to see that tomorrow come into our area. we will see about a 30 degree temperature drop from where we were today to where we'll be about this time tomorrow night. so it will get fairly chilly. future weather, timing out. 6:00 a.m., on a saturday, if you're up i don't know what you're doing. but if you're up at 6:00 a.m., maybe going through at 9:00, saying i'm getting out of bed, you will be fine if you want to get out and do any activities. even through about noon, most of the area dry, right around noon through the blue ridge seeing that line of thunderstorms developing. and watch what happens at 2 p.m., some of the storms could be on the strong side tomorrow, i don't think anything severe but we'll watch these things closely through the d.c. area and over towards chesapeake. so behind it cold and windy again, the storm impacts, big threat will be high winds, but they're just a medium
