a crime scene as investigators look for clues in the murder of a teenager. and a bizarre twist as police arrest a man as he's on the phone reportedly making a bomb threat. how they tracked him down and who they credit with getting him into custody. news4 at 6:00 starts now. we begin tonight with yet another political storm that put a cloud over what might have been a triumphant moment for the president today. >> president trump flew to the newport news shipyard and lasted on the deck of a next generation aircraft carrier. the seas were choppy due to the crisis engulfing attorney general jeff sessions. sessions is trying to calm the waters. he just announced he will step back from investigations into russian ties into the trump presidential campaign. tracie potts joins us with the late-breaking developments. >> reporter: this came after mounting pressure all day long, not just frome

from republicans who were trying to get jeff sessions to either step back or in some cases step down. late this afternoon attorney general jeff sessions announced he will not be involved in the investigation into ties between russia and the trump campaign based on recommendations from his advisors at the just dice department. >> i have reaccused myself in the matters that deal with the trump campaign. >> reporter: sessions is under fire for saying this at his confirmation hearing in january. >> i did not have communications with the russians. >> reporter: but his office confirms sessions did meet with russia's ambassador twice during the compaampaign. >> my reply to the question of senator franken was honest a

correct as i understood it at the time. >> reporter: because he failed to disclose the meetings under oath, a growing chorus of republicans agree that sessions should not oversee the investigation into ties between russia and the trump campaign. >> i do think he should recuse himself, absolutely. >> reporter: president trump touring an aircraft carrier today, told reporters he has total confidence in sessions but did not know about the meeting. >> should sessions recuse himself from investigations into yourself and russia? >> i don't think so at all. >> reporter: white house aides are said to be huddling tonight to come up with a plan to handle this latest crisis. and they're trying to get ahead of the next set of questions late tonight, telling reporters there was another meeting between the russian ambassador and the former nsa advisor mike flip and jerry kushner, the president's advisor and

moscow's enjoy to washington since 2008. his name came up in connection with president trump's first j national security advisor, retired general mike flynn. flynn was forced to resign after revelations that he misled vice president mike pence about his contacts with the ambassador. those stories have led some people to ask whether he is a diplomat or a spy. a former cia boss says those jobs share similarities. >> he would certainly be collecting information. that's what diplomats and spies do. yeah, absolutely. and he's very experienced at it. >> he has spent his career as a diplomat. barbara harrison interviewed him in january for her report on the annual russian ball. there's also some new reporting tonight about the final days in president obama's white house. the report in the "new york times" cites more than half a dozen former and current officials during the obama

found white house officials scrambled to spread information about russian efforts to undermine the election and about possible contacts between mr. trump's associates and russians. the former u.s. officials had two goals according to the times. they wanted to ensure there is no meddling in future u.s. elections, and they tried to leave a trail of intelligence for government investigators to track once they were gone. breaking na ining news in o maryland, a teenager shot and killed in an apartment complex shortly after the end of the school day. it happened on iverson road not too far from potomac high school. tracee wilkins is on the scene with more. >> reporter: again, we have new information just confirmed by the prince george's county school system. this is a student who was attending the nearby potomac high school, shot here in this apartment complex. it became a homicide shortly after he got t

a woman over come with grief could barely stand after receiving news that a teenager had been shot and killed at the south view apartments in oxon hill. >> about 2:50 this afternoon officers received a call for a shooting. when they responded to the se , scene, they found a juvenile suffering from gunshot wounds. >> reporter: one witness tells me they heard two to three shots fired in mid afternoon. the chief of police was on the scene for a short period of time as detectives combed through evidence left near the body. prince george's county police are working to find any evidence that could lead to a suspect and motive in this shooting. >> we know there must have been somebody who saw something. we're trying to track those people down. >> reporter: prince george's county police have not released the name of this victim. this investigation is just beginning. they're asking anyone with information that could help to contact them.

reporting live in oxon hill, i'm tracee wilkins. a rockville building had to be evacuated today after a man threatened to blow himself up. police say it all started because of over due child support payments. officers caught up with the guy on falls road as he was making his way into the city. more on how a phone call helped track him down. >> reporter: this is information we're just getting into news4 and exclusive to news4. we now know that man was on the phone for more than two hours with a call taker with the state agency he had threatened to blow up. >> he was going to blow himself up in front of the child support office. >> reporter: the suspect phoned the state child support offices about 9:00 this morning, upset about his tax refund being garnished to pay off his

child support. >> he was very angry this morning based on the call taker that spoke to him. >> reporter: the call taker at the state agency notified his supervisors and police, but he remained on the phone as the suspect continued to make threats while he was driving from baltimore to rockville. the suspect told the call taker he would blow himself up at the child support offices in rockville, just steps from the courthouse. he also threatened his ex-wife and their child as well as a judge. >> part of this may stem from a divor divorce, custody situation. >> reporter: for more than two you a hours, the suspect was on the phone with the child support call center, making threats as he drove. the entire time the employee at the call center was relaying information to police. police eventually pulled the suspect over as he was driving on falls road near i-270. >> the sheriff's canine

to indicate there was a possibility of something in the vehicle. that's why they called us to do a further search. but our search revealed no evidence of explosives in the vehicle. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with montgomery county police. they say that suspect is still being interviewed by detectives. and so far he has not been charged. no guns, no weapons, no explosives were found. as for his ex-wife and their child, they have been given police protection. a fairfax county police officer who shot a man near herndon has now been identified. he is officer lance guckenberger. he shot a man outside his home back in january. investigators say the man shot his brothers and refused police orders to drop a knife he was holding. at the same time, smoke was coming from the

man was trapped inside. police are supposed to release the name of an officer involved in the shooting within ten days unless there is a threat to the officer or their family. a judge recently ruled there is such threat. officer guckenberger is a 16-year veteran of the department. he has used deadly force twice in the past, in 2005 and 2010. both those incidents were made public and determined to be a lawful use of force. a big rally in support of federal workers today on the capitol grounds near the supreme court. >> we're not a punching bag. we're not a punching bag! >> that's virginia congressman jerry connolly leading the crowd and chanting "we're not a punching bag." the rally was sponsored by the national treasury employees union. they say they want to protect employees

neighbors are on edge right now as fairfax county police search for possible human remains at a local park after two days of searching. police say they need the public's helped but they're staying tight-lipped on their investigation. chris gordon is at holmes run park with the new developments. chris? >> reporter: doreen, two teenage boys disappeared last fall from their fairfax county homes. could this search be for them? or is it connected to gang-related murder or murders? what is clear tonight is that police

scene in the woods behind me. detectives have found what they believe could be potential evidence. here you can see forensic technicians putting items in evidence bags for analysis. fairfax county police are not saying what the evidence is, but they say no human remains have been found. investigators spent the day here a couple of hundred yards from the park lawn pool rek center on crater place in alexandria. the search is now focused on a heavily wooded area in holmes run park. access to the neighborhood is restricted. the police activity has residents on edge. >> you never know. i worry about it. is this some body behind my house? >> reporter: recently ten members of the ms-13 game were arrested in connection with the murder of 15-year-old alexandra reyes. and six gang members were

christian sosa rivas was discovered murdered in prince william county. police won't say isf this searc resulted from those cases. >> people have reported they've seen gang slogans and things like that. >> reporter: holmes run park has been the scene of two other gang-related murders. in 2013 and 2014, victims were lured here and killed by ms-13 members, who were then charged and convicted in federal court. tonight searchers put on white protective suits as they combed through the crime scene, which may mean they feel they have close to finding human remains here. jim, back to you. there's also been an increase in gang violence up in new york. last night raids led to the ray rest of suspected gang members wanted in seven murde,

teenage girls in long island. 13 members or suspected members of the gang ms-13 are facing federal charges, some of them are already in prison. march 8th is international women's day. this year there is a call for a one-day strike called a day without a woman. people who want to support the effort are asked to wear red to show their solidarity. another way to show support is to spend money at small businesses owned by women and other minorities. women are encouraged to take the day off from paid and unpaid labor. the organizers are planning the day without a woman demonstration they say as a way to lghlight the economic power that women hold. you will have to wait a bit longer for road work on beach drive to finish up. the national park service says the stretch

thi tilden street and rock creek parkway need more work. >> reporter: jim, 12 million vehicles a year use this stretch of beach drive. so it's very very busy. take a look at what it's doing, the road work, to traffic on a nightly basis out here it is absolutely brutal some nights as the traffic just rolls along. beach drive is going to be closed an extra two months because of the work that's needed. really it's because of the trail that runs right next to beach drive. they need to do some more widening of that trail and there are some drainage issues with this project. they want to knock it all out. we talked to the park service about it today. >> what we want to do is get this all done at once so we're not creating further inconveniences in the center. we want to get them done all a
