some snowfall there and it could be lowering visibility for a time. if you look farther out west right near 81, white post, front royal, this is where we have another round of some snow but again they're going to be passing through. north of the district we are at or below freezing. it is a cold start this morning. bundle up especially if you're standing at the bus stop. >> absolutely. as we go through the morning the winds aren't exactly out there right now but they'll pick up after 9:00, 10:00 a.m. so the kids are not going to have to worry about the winds but they are going to have to worry about going to school on time because i don't think there will be any delays or anything. chilly definitely. 33 at the bus stop. 34 at 8:00 a.m. when you go to pick up the kids this afternoon that's when we'll start to see that wind really amp up. windchills in the 20s and 30s by this afternoon. so it is going to be chilly, but just wait until the next couple days. right through the weekend we'll be chilly.

crew is there on the scene. they're trying to get their spot established so we can report to you live from the scene of where 75 firefighters had to be present overnight to be able to put this massive fire out and we are hearing that it is in fact, a total loss. this is on the 16000 block of willow lane. the big concern this morning for fire officials is they have not been able to find the homeowner. so again, this happened last night. firefighters declaring this home a total loss. as soon as we can get megan for you we'll bring that to you in a live report. >> thank you. developing right now, violence overnight in the district. police are investigating several shootings. you're looking at footage at one of the scenes from the rhode island avenue metro shot. five people were shot in this area around 9:30 last night. now take a look at this map.

shooting on brentwood road and another on rhode island avenue. just a few hours before, police say two people were also shot on fairmont street northwest. police have not released any suspect information. we're told that all seven people have nonlife threatening injuries. >> this morning counselors will be at potomac high school to help students cope with the loss of a classmate. an 11th grade student was shot and killed yesterday at oxon hill. police are searching for a suspect. >> more calls this morning for attorney general jeff session to resign after revelation he spoke with the russian ambassador during the presidential elections. a small group of demonstrators gathered outside of the white house last night holding signs that read lying jeff and sessions lied. this morning it is unlikely president trump will ask for sessions' resignation after

him an honest man. in a series of tweets the president acknowledged that sessions could have quote, stated his response more accurately to congress. he went on to say that all this political fallout was quitote, way for democrats saving face for losing an election everyone thought they were supposed to win. he said the real story is the illegal leaks of classified information. >> jeff sessions will not be involved in investigating ties between russia and the trump campaign. he refused himself yesterday from any current or potential investigation. all this follows reports that he spoke with the russian ambassador twice during the election. that contradicted his confirmation statements that quote, i did not have conversations with the russians. he said those were part of his duties as a senator. >> in retrospect i should have slowed down and said, but i did meet one russian official a couple of tim

northbound ramp is open. it was not open earlier. a look at 66 coming up. all right. thank you. 5:14 right now and police in prince william county have arrested a 15-year-old boy for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl. the assault happened last month at the kid's choice sport and fun center in wood bridge. the girl told police an assistant swim coach has touched her inappropriately during practice. the 15-year-old is being held at a detention center on multiple charges. a man is accused of threatening to blow himself up outside a child support office. he called the office yesterday because his tax refund is being garnished. he said he wanted to hurt his ex-wife and three-year-old child. the worker stayed on the suspect as the suspect drove from baltimore to rockville. police spotted him, followed him into rockville and pulled him over. >> onef our bomb teches in a

breaking news now montgomery county where firefighters are watching hot spots after a large fire. >> megan just arrived on the scene to tell us the latest. what's going on? >> reporter: well, we're here in the 16100 block of willow lane in rockville and this was a devastating fire. all that we have left of this home is just a pile of charred debris, all that stands is a brick chimney that was on the left-hand side of this house. now, there was real concern here this morning because the person who lives in this home is still unaccounted for. just a short time ago i spoke to the public information officer with the fire department. he says that investigators in talking with neighbors in the area, they told firefighters that they believed that the homeowner was home at the time. they had no reason to believe that he was elsewhere. but they have been unable to locate him at this point so a real concern this morning. crews ha

this fire broke out around 10:15 last night. that's when the call came in. they put it out in about 20 minutes or so, but there are hot spots still smoldering here so crews have been here all night long hitting those hot spots with water. investigators, when the sun comes up they will return here to the scene and they will begin the process of taking a closer look here. they'll have to go layer by layer and try and figure out if a homeowner is still inside that home and of course, way too early to talk about cause. we are expecting the chief of police to be here later on this morning as well. or the fire chief later this morning. back to you. in northern virginia fairfax county police are identifying the officer who shot a man near herndon. the officer shot a man outside his home back in january. investigators say that he shot his brother and refused police orders to drop a knife he was holding. at the same time smoke was

another man was trapped inside. the donald trump is supposed to release the name of an officer involved in a shooting within ten days unless there is a threat to an officer or their family. the officer is a 16-year veteran of the department. he's used deadly force twice in the past. in 2005 and 2010. both of these incidents were made public and determined to be a lawful use of force. some neighbors are on edge after days of police combing the area near their home looking for human remains. the fbi and fairfax county homicide detectives remain tight lipped about what possible murder or disappearance they're investigating. a recent tip led them there and recently more than a dozen gang members were arrested for two murders in northern virginia but police will not say if those arrests are connected to this search. so far, no remains have been found. pieces of an army uniform are stolen many the middle of the night and now the

are looking for the burglar. this man was caught on surveillance camera. investigators believe he is armed. he stole uniforms, shoes, socks and ties from a locker at the army career center in oxon hill. he also took a black hyundai elantra. he has tie to fairfax, virginia. if you know who the person is, call police. giving back is a big part of what we do here at nbc and a special series called give help us do just that. the show partners with celebrities to spotlight charities around the country. one of them is called the armed services arts partnership. they offer free comedy classes to veterans. the other charity is called bunker labs. they teach veterans how to start businesses. >> it's very healing to be able to express yourself and develop -- have the
