political news cycle get a lot faster while i was gone? >> it's cruising. we have a story that involves it today. it's our top story. president trump coming to the defense of attorney general sessions amid a legal and political firestorm over his meetings with russia's ambassador. and we're now learning about even more talks between the trump campaign and russian officials. we have it all covered, beginning with nbc's hallie jackson who is at the white house this morning. good morning. >> reporter: hi, matt, good morning to you and this morning president trump is now aiming his anger at the democrats, demanding jeff sessions resign. the president also lashing out at leaks, but emphasizing he has total confidence in his attorney general. repaying sessions' long time loyalty with some of his own. this morning, a defined defense of his attorney general. president trump calling jeff sessions an honest man after the revelations sessions as a senator

ambassador, but didn't disclose it at his confirmation hearing when asked about campaign contacts. >> i have been called a surrogate at a time or two in the campaign and i didn't have communications with the russians. >> now -- >> i should have said i did meet one official a couple of times. >> reporter: he could have stated the response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional. then blaming democrats. quote they lost the election and now they have lost their grip on reality. ending, it is a total witch-hunt. >> i think it was hyped beyond reason and it was unfair and i was glad to address it today. >> reporter: hours earlier the president was asked if sessions should recuse himself. >> i don't think so at all. >> reporter: but ultimately sessions decided to do that to avoid the appearance of a

campaign. >> reporter: the move, pacifying members of the gop after some republicans pushed for the recusal. >> i think it's just best in this case if he recuses himself. >> i do think he's going to need to recuse himself at this point. >> reporter: democrats dozens of whom who called on sessions to step down still unsatisfied. >> the recusal isn't enough. there's more to be done. >> reporter: news of more kremlin contacts with the white house confirming another member of the president's inner circle met with the same russian ambassador before inauguration day. jared kushner, donald trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, sitting down with sergey kislyak at the russian's request, along with former national security adviser nike -- michael flynn. the meeting at trump tower in december and the administration describing that 15 minute talk as routine, introductory, all of it as the vice president faces

e-mails. the indy star reporting that mike pence used a private e-mail account to conduct public business as governor of indiana, discussing sensitive matters, adding that personal account was hacked. but the vice president's office says he fully complied with indiana law regarding e-mail use and retention during the campaign. the then governor slammed hillary clinton for her use of a private e-mail server. >> here we have hillary clinton and her team trying to delete almost 18,000 e-mails. >> reporter: but his spokesman called any comparison absolutely absurd. the vice president's office tells nbc news pence that then governor at the time did take security measures on that personal account and we are hearing from moscow about these contacts or communications between members of the trump administration and folks back at the

the russian foreign minister echoing the same language president trump used, calling it a witch-hunt. the president today gets back on the road, heading to orlando to talk education reform before spending another weekend at his mar-a-lago estate. >> thank you very much. good morning to both of you and politics questions, i'll start with you, ari. just the mechanics of this. jeff sessions recuses from the investigation so now the deputy attorney general is in charge of it. but the deputy attorney general answers to attorney general. how does it work? is an independent counsel still a possibility here? >> normally the deputy attorney general does report to his attorney general and he's out of the job, that's supposed to create independence. fuller independence could come if you have an independent special prosecutor who would start up the ent

tape. this is carter page a former trump campaign adviser being questioned last night on msnbc about a potential meeting he had with that russian ambassador. listen. >> did you meet sergey kislyak in cleveland, did you talk to him? >> i'm not going to deny that i talked with him. >> so you did talk to him? >> i will say i never met him anywhere outside of cleveland. let's just say that much. >> the only time that you met him was in cleveland? >> i may have met him possibly -- might have been in cleveland. >> we have more and more people who are being questioned about contacts with the russians and we have two people at least who had to admit they misled others about their conversations or meetings with the russians. i'm going to put you on the spot. explain this away for me. you're team trump. tell me why this is much ado about nothing? >> it's inexplicable that so many people had so many meetings with many

tell us was trying to undermine the united states. you expect the administration to want to get to the bottom of it. the other important headline is that jeff sessions said he's only recusing from the campaign piece. that stops at november 8th. but the fbi looking at conduct during the transition period in the transition period. >> there's no firm evidence that the trump campaign or associates in any -- had any collusion with the russians. if you're jared kushner and you listen about his discussions with the russian ambassador, wouldn't you raise your hand in an effort of full transparency and said, by the way, i want to get on the record i was at a meeting between the two of them as well. >> yeah, here's the reason why, that meeting, the one you're talking about, happened in december. the day after, the week after president obama announced sanctions against russia. so there's the appearance that perhaps some of the

to discuss the sanctions -- >> why wouldn't you raise your hand to say i want to get ahead of this. >> it gets back to forgetfulness or trying to cover something up. >> we don't know he did so in the white house, but we just learned about the jared kushner aspect of it. thank you both so much. now to breaking news overnight. the u.s. conducting a series of air strikes against al qaeda in yemen. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely has the latest on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. this is one of the heaviest u.s. attacks on yemen in years. u.s. aircraft carrying out a series of air strikes over the past two days. the first since a u.s. navy s.e.a.l. was killed in the same area in january. and it may be evidence of a new aggressive campaign by president trump against al qaeda in yemen. the pentagon says there were more than 20 raids yesterday. using drones and apache helicopters targeting the militants and weapons in three

morning reported by reuters say the air attacks have continued. the pentagon though won't confirm local reports that u.s. commandos were dropped on the ground to fight the militants. senior intelligence sources tell nbc news these raids are the result of new orders from the white house. described as an aggressive gloves off attempt to defeat al qaeda and they come five weeks after the first operation authorized by president trump. an operation in which a navy s.e.a.l. william ryan owen was killed. he gave the tribute to his widow saying that ryan's legacy is etched in eternity. he said it was a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence. although the latest raises were in -- raids were in the same area where owens was killed they're not the direct result of the intelligence. the targets were known weeks

ago. now yemen and al qaeda poses a direct threat to the u.s. the bomb makers have targeted u.s. planes and the intense new raids suggest that president trump and the pentagon are on a new fast track to try to end that threat. matt, savannah? >> bill neely, thank you. back to washington now. a couple of high profile cabinet picks to tell you about. rick perry was sworn in thursday as energy secretary. the senate confirmed him by a vote of 62-37. also on thursday, dr. ben carson sworn in as the secretary of the housing development. president trump has all but two of his cabinet picks confirmed. let's go to tennessee now and the urgent manhunt for a killer wanted for the murder of a 23-year-old nurse. nashville police hope this surveillance video will help them crack the case. they say the hooded suspect seen here was checking for unlocked cars early tuesday morning. minutes before he snuck in to the apartment and stabbed

that's something that then senator sessions did not acknowledge during his confirmation hearings to be attorney general. president trump called him an honest man but said he could have stated his response more accurately. for his part, the attorney general has announced he's recused himself from any investigation with ties to russia. the trump campaign and the election. and we're also learning more about another preinauguration meeting between russia's ambassador and a member of the trump team -- jared kushner. the president's son-in-law, senior adviser, met with sergey kislyak at the ambassador's request at trump tower back in december. former national security adviser michael flynn was also there and the white house says that meeting lasted just 15 minutes and describes it as routine. a new arrest warrant tied to the killing of kim jong un's half brother has been issued for a man who works for north korea's national airline carrier. officials say he arrive in malaysia several weeks before the attack on kim jong nam. so far, the

two women accused of smearing a nerve agent on to the victim's face. i want to talk about the former president, barack obama. six weeks after leaving house, the question is he looking to make a comeback. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. now after eight years in the spotlight, matt, and devastating election cycle for democrats, the question remains -- how will the former president stage his return to public life? nearly two months after leaving office, barack obama is planning his return to the spotlight. named this year's winner of the john f. kennedy profile in courage award. mr. obama tweeting he is humbled to be recognized. in part for his leadership on climate change and expanding health care. two achievements now at risk with the election of donald trump. this year's award is especially significant being presented in may on the 100th anniversary of jfk's birth, to be awarded by caroline kennedy who he appointed

assassination of her husband. the letters reveal a close relationship with david onesby gore, a long time kennedy friend. the british aristocrat wanted to marry her, but after we learned from the recently discovered letters how she turned him down. everyone knows the story of camelot, the beautiful, but troubled love story between a young president and his captivating life. the tragic end the recent subject of a hollywood movie "jackie." >> it's too much to ask of a girl. >> reporter: but another one emerged, a story of unrequited love. 18 long lost letters discovered this past january in two locked cases belonging to the late david onesby gore, and now part of an auction of items from his

estate in london. he was the influential british ambassador to the u.s. and a confidant to the kennedy clan. here he is introducing jackie and the children to queen elizabeth in 1965. two years later, jackie and robert kennedy would attend the funeral of his wife who died in a car accident. >> they had a lot of tragedy and loss and that made them very close. but you see as it gets to the later date that the relationship does develop further. >> with mrs. kennedy -- >> reporter: the two travelled to cambodia together in 1967, sparking rumors he proposed, but jackie declined. and the following year, jackie married greek shipping magnate aristotle onassis. onesby gore anguish is obvious in a draft letter when he talks about plan he had for the relationship and her rejection. all had become irrelevant trash to be thrown away in a few

williams classic you have called one of the great female roles in theater. >> it is. yes. >> you have called it the one that got away. apparently it didn't. but you thought it had. why? >> well, i did a production of it -- i don't know how many years ago, over ten. at the kennedy center. and we couldn't bring the production in because there was a production already coming in. and then there was a production after that. and so i thought well, that's pretty much it. only so many productions of "glass menagerie" that could be brought into broadway. that's because sam gold -- really incredible young director on broadway now, and off broadway as well. he wanted to do it. and so that's how this happened. this isn't everybody's glass menagerie. let me put it this way. >> he said something amazing about you

rehearse the hole 24 hours a day. he thinks by the time you get to the theater you have done it in the living room many times. do you go into the role like that? >> oh, sure, i think we all do. it's such a massive piece. and complicated and sam has taken -- sam gold has taken a very complicated play and made it even more complicated. >> so how do you get through that eight times a week? >> i don't know. we'll find out. >> it's a challenge. you said a second ago raising kids on another coast. you kind of became bicoastal not long ago. >> yes. >> from what i have been reading, you took to new york -- you put it like a college freshman. what have you soaked up of this city so far? >> just as much as i can. it is -- it's that -- i grew up on the west coast obviously in los angeles and the valley and all those places. it takes so ng

"today's food." if there's one food to know how to make it's lasagna. >> word on the street is you make a mean vegetable lasagna. >> i like the meat, but i like to do a few meatless meals a week. here's the recipe grid. we have zucchini and peppers and onions and garlic. take a box of lasagna. i don't mind the no boil lasagna, to be honest. because it saves a step. but anyway, heavily salted water. bring that to the boil. while that's happening, you have your chopped up veggies. a couple of different kinds zucchini, squash, onions and garlic and there's few things as good as the smell of garlic sauteing in your house. you're going to cook this until it gets soft. don't want to brown it or

you're good. come up front here, you have your cooked veggies. you can add a -- a store purchased marinara sauce. another thing to do, get a can of crushed tomatoes and just saute that up. >> any kind of spaghetti sauce will work. >> if you used the crushed tomatoes there's less sugar in there. you saute up the basil and let it get nice and toasty. for the filling, take ricotta cheese, eggs, salt and pepper. >> what if you find yourself halfway through and you don't havanrittchse >> cottage cheese will work too. then you throw pepper in. mix that up. nice, almost like cheese batter dough. now you have your noodles that have cooled off a little bit. >> i understand the noodles, don't cook all the way
