how this crash happened and why. a single car crash at the intersection of smallwood drive and st. niklas drive in waldorf. it happened just after 12:30. it was as quick as it was deadly. this man was waiting for the light to change when the car came by. >> the speed was super fast. my truck shook. >> reporter: there were about four or five others cars as that speeding car came on. >> there was a car in front of him. what i'm guessing is to avoid hitting the car, he must have turned to his left. >> reporter: the car hit ra utili -- a utility pole and broke apart. emergency responders arrived. >> they had two individuals deceased inside the car. there was a third individual located. he was transported via helicopter also with life threatening injuries. >> reporter: those who travel this road and who work around this intersection say this isn't

this is getting out of control and we need to stop it. >> reporter: julie carey joins us live from the holmes run park neighborhood where police tell us they are determined to stop gang violence. julie? >> reporter: you know, as you said, two bodies, both of them found in the woods there about 300 yards from where i'm standing. what's even more troubling, it is the second time this kind of discovery has been made in this park. this area was blocked off with crime scene tape for days as investigators collected evidence, evidence of two homicides. today we were able to climb to the hill top to see where the victims were found. police say the bodies had been here for less than a year. for neighbors it's unsettling news. it's upsetting. you don't wake up every day thinking, did anyone die behind my

case. this evening we are working for you with how police hope to stop the deadly increase in gang activity. they say it won't end with arrests. instead they're going to start addressing parents. but ahead, a major obstacle that's making residents uneasy about reporting crimes. we're following new developments this evening about those threats to jewish groups here and across the country. federal authorities say a man seeking revenge on an ex-girlfriend is behind at least eight of the threats. juan thompson was arrested in st. louis, charged with cyber stalking. he appeared in court late this afternoon and ordered held without bail until his next hearing on wednesday. now, according to the federal complaint, thompson made some of the threats in his ex-girlfriend's name as part of a sustained campaign to harass her. federal officials have been investigating 122 bomb threats across the country. three schools in our area received threats this week, but

get the best. get fios. an intense fire left a man dead and destroyed a house here in rockville. this blaze broke out last night on willow lane. many neighbors called 911 after looking out their windows and seeing these pictures. >> fire, fire, fire. it was way too engulfed in flames. >> tonight we're learning more about the man who died in that blaze. meagan fitzgerald is in rockville. she spoke to a family member and neighbors today. >> reporter: yeah. jim i can tell you family members are devastated. they're still in shock. they came out here this morning and this is what they saw just behind us here. their father's house literally reduced to nothing. just the chimneys on either side

standing. 71-year-old larry in this home. >> a sweet and gentleman. very private man. easy to talk to. people liked him. >> reporter: the loss of larry pollyeye is one so many who knew and loved him don't want to believe. >> very good man. >> still shocked. >> reporter: his brother-in-law says larry was a loving father to two daughters and an extremely proud grandfather who continued to work as a cpa. >> we called his office this morning. his secretary said he hadn't showed up yet. >> reporter: family members rushed to larry's house, only to realize their worst nightmare was true. >> distraught. this is horrible, you know? >> likely the fire burned for a while before it was noticed. >> reporter: fire investigators say just before 10:00 last night a fire ripped through larry's home.

investigators say it's a lead they are looking into. that transgender teenager suing a virginia school to use the bathroom of his choice. attorney generals general from 18 states have now signed a brief in support of gavin grim. they filed that friend of the court brief with the supreme court last night. it argues that allowing transgender people to use the bathroom matching their gender identity creates no public safety threat tor financial burden. grim is suing the gloucester county school board for the right to use the boys bathroom. we've seen what appears to be an increase of gang violence in our region. our northern virginia bureau reporter david culver is in woodbridge with a look at what that's going to take. >> reporter: in talking with local and federal law enforcement and those who specialize on the regional gang task force, when it comes to

these are going to across the blue ridge toward portions of loudoun county there. we had a lot earlier, but once again as they move over the mountains kind of hard for them to stay together. this morning we had good ones come through right around frederick. even some black ice and issues out there on the area roadways earlier this morning. snow even came through the d.c. metro area a little bit earlier. something else coming in is the cold. we have not seen a map like this where everybody is on the cold side. tomorrow, a cold day. high of 42 degrees. that's the average high for tend of january. we'll stay cold right on through the day on sunday. monday, a high temperature of 60 degrees. we do get warm again. on tuesday, tracking some rain. could even see a thunderstorm or two with highs in the 70s. next weekend looking chilly as well.

now there are new technologies like 3d reduce false positives. accuracy obviously is very critical. but what about radiation? is there more of it with 3d mammography and how does the procedure differ from a traditional procedure? >> there can be, pat. it works very similar to traditional mammography. your breast is still compressed. instead of getting a top down and a side view of the breast, the scanner goes all along around the breast so it takes about 15 different pictures of the breast. so the radiologies then can see the breast from all answerl ang. one of the problems with the 2d traditional mammography is that

>> reporter: we take a ride with the street sweeping crew live desk. montgomery county police have arrested a school bus driver for having inappropriate contact with students. his name is salvador rodriguez. last month, investigators say, he had inappropriate sexual contact with two 11-year-old girls. police say rodriguez has been driving a route that includes rock view elementary school, newport school and albert einstein high school. police arrested him this morning when he showed up for an appointment with detectives. they say rodriguez admitted having contact with the girls. now detectives are asking parents to talk with their kids to see if there are more victims out there. five people are recovering now after being shot in the district. d.c. police working two separate shooting incidents. last night two men and a boy were shot on rhode island avenue not far from the met troe statio -- metro station.

♪ ♪ she went to visit family in west africa. she wound up imprisoned for near a year. now a maryland woman is home and she's thanking all of the people who worked tirelessly to help bring her family. friends and family were at the airport to greet her after a long journey home. >> reporter: safe and sound and back on american soil. fanta darboe jawara arrived at bu dulles after a long flight, nearly a year in the making. >> i'm so glad to be hope. >> reporter: she lives in frederick with her husband and two daughters, spent ten months in a gambian prison. she was arrested during a protest against a vick dictator.

last year these street sweepers picked up more of trash and debris off the streets of washington, d.c. >> we do not want that litter in our stormwater drains. >> reporter: while it's important for you to pay attention to those street sweeping signs those crews can pick up all that trash that could otherwise end up in our streams and rivers, it could also save you from getting one of those $45 tickets or your car getting towed. >> please abide by the signs. even in cases where the sweeper has already swept the block, you asked that you abide by the signage and not park on that side of the block between the hours marked. >> reporter: to give you an idea of how big a problem dpw has with drivers not paying attention to those signs, last season d.c. issued more than 77,000 tickets for a total of $3.5 million in fines. the city will issue warnings until march 10th.

after that, they'll issue in the district, mark segraves, news4. news4 at 6:00 starts now. the fbi is calling our area a gang hot spot after the discovery of two more bodies. >> that is a total of four people now dead in connection to recent gang violence in northern virginia. the human remains were found after a tip led investigators to search holmes run park in fairfax county. julie carey tells us this isn't the first time a discovery like this has been made there. >> reporter: well, there is an unsettling sense of deja vu for neighbors here because back in may of 2014 the bodies of two men were found in these woods. their killer is now serving life sentences. but it's happened again. now two sets of human remains found in the woods about 300 yards from where i'm standing.

it has the fbi and fairf police promising to find the latest killers to try to stop this surge in gang violence. a tip led police to dig here for two days. late thursday night their made their troubling discovery. we were able to go to the spot where the bodies were bury. the medical examiner will determine the victims' identity police want to know who killed them. >> this problem is horrible. this is four murders this this park. obviously we've had other murders in the region in the past few weeks. this is getting out of control and we need to stop it. >> reporter: the other recent murders, those of 21-year-old christian sosa rivas and 16-year-old accelexandra reyes. the discovery of more bodies heightens concern of other missing teens in our area. these two boys haven't been seen since last fall. >> we see nationwide hot spots across the nation.
