tells news 4 she's praying it's not her son. and new technology improving the accuracy of mammograms. and hopefully reducing the fear of a false result. news 4 at 11:00 starts now. hello, everybody. first up at 11:00, our frigid friday night is just the start of what will be one of the coldest weekends of the season. >> what a shock it is after we hit 80 earlier this week. doug, how long is this cold going to stick around? >> it's kind of hard to imagine. temperatures right now, it feels nearly 60 to 70 degrees colder than it did just two days ago. absolutely amazing how it just hits you when you step out the door. it has been so warm and now look how cold we are. current temperatures in the 20s. but look at the wind chills. 22 kuscurrently in d.c., feels e 16 in hagerstown, 9 in state college. and an incredibly cold night across our region.

school students. michael miser is the school principal. >> the two young men who lost their lives are two good men. a good circle of friends. always smiling gentlemen, happy. >> reporter: the horrific one-car crash that kills the two teenagers and leaves caleb marshall in critical condition happened this afternoon on smallwood drive near st. nicholas drive. a commercial area not far from their high school. the silver sedan appeared to be traveling fast when the driver swerved to avoid rear-ending another car that was waiting for the traffic light, then truck a light pole. >> we're, what, three months away, probably maybe 60 school days or so to graduation. it's really a gut shot to the families and to the school, the community, the teachers, the staff. >> reporter: the crash is under investigation by the charles county sheriff's office. anyone who mha

in waldorf, jackie bensen, news 4. a local mother is hoping for the best and trying not to fear the worst, after fairfax county police found two bodies in a park near her home. her 14-year-old son has been missing since september, and tonight she spoke to shomari stone about the agonizing wait for information. >> reporter: imagine how this mother must feel. you haven't received any text messages, phone calls, knocks on the door at your apartment from your son. she's been waiting to figure out what has happened to him. she's been missing for six months. and police found the bodies of -- the remains of two bodies here in this park and she's concerned that one of them could possibly belong to her son. >> this has been a very much sadness. waiting to know something about my son. >> reporter: carla tremino's eyes

worry, wishing she could wipe away the pain. she's waiting to see if her son serg sergio's remains have been found in holmes run park. >> translator: i think that anyone like this will be worried and as a mother, i want to believe that my son will be fine. >> reporter: they live in an apartment about ten minutes from the park. fairfax county police found the remains of two people after receiving a tip. crime scene investigators collectsed evidence of two homicides. investigators believe the deaths are more than likely gang related. the bodies have been here for less than a year. karla says on a night in mid-september at 8:00 her son walked to this dumpster to throw out the trash. she hasn't seen him since. >> translator: he never came back. karla said sergio is not involved in gangs. police say gang members have used the park in the past for crimes. in 2014, the bodies of two men were found in the park. the gg

those crimes were convicted last year and they're serving life sentences. >> translator: i hope to know that he's somewhere safe. >> reporter: also missing, 17-year-old edmund escobar mendez. he also hasn't been seen since last fall. i tried to get information from police and ask how long will the medical examiner's office report take, and they don't have any word. but one thing is clear, you have this mother waiting to see the outcome, waiting to see who belongs to the remains that were found in the park behind me. live here in alexandria, i'm shomari stone, news 4. >> just awful. thank you, shomari. as gang growth increases in our area, police find a gang mentality itself is difficult to crack. so is the deep rooted mistrust that latino communities have for law enforcement. that's root in police corruption some immigrants experienced in their home countries

compounded by fears of deportation. >> have information about a crimep. >> yeah, they're not going to call. >> they'll say we'll protect you. >> right. >> but they don't trust that? >> no, they don't trust that. everybody saying to people, don't open your house. if it is a police knocking on your door, don't open only if they have a warrant because you don't know if i.c.e. is working with the police. >> groups like the gang response intervention team in prince william county are working on rebuilding trust between police and latino communities. they focus on stopping gang growth through education and prevention. reformed gang members are also involved teaching parents and young people how gangs think and how they recruit. >> a teenaged girl is missing tonight in northern virginia, but so far there are no signs her case is gang relate. the fbi, fairfax county police and national center for missing and exploited children are all looking for jamia holland.

franconia area. 5'2", weighs 230 poubdnds. she was last seen tuesday in alexandria. detectives tell us they're concerned for her welfare, but did not go into details. we checked tonight the center for missing and exploit children reports 45 active cases of missing teens in northern virginia since january 1st. flames swallowed a home in rockville and the damage was so intense investigators say they may never know what actually caused this fire. as crews tried to beat back the flames last night, part of the home collapsed. crews worked on hot spots through the night and dug through rubble searching for the homeowner. he lived in the home on willow lane for decades and often built fires in his fireplace. investigators aren't ruling that out as a cause. >> it's like the police said, we all know it, is that he runs his

fireplace. but he's been running his fireplace for, i don't know, 40 years. >> tonight fire crews continue to douse the debris with foam hoping that hot spots won't reignite. gymnasts dedicate their lives to represent the united states. tonight a court wrote pages about how they handle sex abuse complaints against their coaches. the file shows usa gymnastics didn't ban some coaches until years after. conversations about allowing a convicted sex offender to keep his coaching status. the indianapolis star filed a motion to release these records as part of an investigation that helped uncover allegations against longtime usa gymnastics phci

he has denied all wrong doing. today usa gymnastics says it had banned 37 of the coaches mentioned in this report and audited its entire safety program, but we should note the organization did fight to keep these records under seal. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence. >> chris, thank you. a d.c. judge tonight has made sure a convicted rapist will never leave prison. this is surveillance video of demetrius banks of riverdale. in the summer of 2015 he stalked women late at night as they walked home from the brookland or fort totten metro stations. he assaulted all five of them and raped two. in addition to life in prison, the judge handed down another 82 years for banks without the possibility of parole. police say a school bus driver in montgomery county admitted he had inappropriate contact with two 11-year-old girls. salvador rodriguez f

investigators arrested him today. they say he had sexual contact with the girls on the bus this school year. his bus routes included rockview elementary, newport mill middle school and albert einstein high school. detectives want parents to contact police if they think their child might have been a victim. the district placed rodriguez on administrative leave last month after learning about the allegations. a jilted lover is behind eight bomb threats across the country that rattled the jewish community. police are calling him a copycat. they say juan thompson of st. louis is not responsible for the larger wave of bomb threats placed to more than 100 jewish sites. the fbi says thompson made some threats in his ex-girlfriend's name, then some in his own name and he claimed his ex was racist in trying to set him up. thompson was charged with cyber stalking and is due in court next week. the fbi still hasn't figured out who is behind the bulk of the

anne thompson introduces us to technology that's dramatically cutting down on those health scares. >> reporter: kathy fogerty readies for a day she postponed for too long, getting her annual mammogram a year late because of a frightening false positive last name. >> everybody immediately goes to that picture of a cancer patient with no hair and a bloated face. i won't see any girls get married. >> reporter: she didn't have cancer but did have a classic reaction to a false positive, anxiety, confusion and stress, but doctors say what's most troubling is false positives cause women to put off the next screening, an average of 13 months. kathy switched imaging clinics in search of a more precise technology, 3-d mammography. instead of taking a top and side view of a compressed breast, it takes multiple x-rays as it moves around the breast to give radiologists like this doctor

becomes an anchor for the downtown area. the massive modernization project includes a transparent entryway, sculptured stairs and a rooftop event space. the library has already been a refuge for the city's homeless population. according to "the washington post," the district plans to offer alternatives to the homeless including expanded daytime services. this time tomorrow safetrack surge 13 will be under way. this new phase affects the blue and yellow lines. surge 13 runs from march 4th to april 9th. the two lines will run less frequently because of a 24-hour work zone between braddock road and the huntington/van doren street stations, all blue and yellow line trains will be single tracking through the work zone. additional yellow line trains running between mount vernon square. find alternatives in the washington app by searching metro al
