reject as false. our political team is ready to go with complete coverage this morning and we will talk trd president trump's deputy press secretary. but we start with peter alexander. >> reporter: president trump accusing president obama 45 accusing 44 of tapping his phones at trump tower which if true would be one of the most scandalous acts in political history. but not only is there no evidence that it ever happened, the head of the fbi wants the justice department to publicly refute it. this morning the fbi director is looking to set the president straight. a senior u.s. official tells nbc news james comey has asked the justice department to publicly knock down president trump's explosive claim that former president obama ordered the wiretapping of mr. trump's phones during the 2016 election. comey's argument that

is false and needs to be corrected because it implies the fbi broke the law. late sunday kellyanne conway challenged comey to reveal any information he might have. >> if mr. comey has something he'd like to say, i'm sure we're all willing to hear it. if he knows, of course he can issue a statement. we know not shy. >> reporter: it comes after president trump unleashed the highly charged allegation on twitter. a move he compared to mccart mccarthyism, personally attacking mr. obama as a bad or sick guy, all of it without offering any evidence. president obama's office dismissing the claim as simply false. still the trump white house is calling for a congressional investigation to see whether the w obama administration abused its power, adding that they will not comment further until such oversight is conducted. shortly after, a trump spokesperson qualif

distraction. >> reporter: this weekend's outburst punctuating a tense week. president trump some say was furious that jeff sessions recused himself in investigations. an animated discussion appears to be having inside the oval office friday. still trump supporters came out in force in cities across the country this weekend, standing behind the president. one of those rallies turned violence as trump supporters were met by protesters near the university of california at berkeley. atte at least ten were arrested. and there is plenty of speculation about where the president may have gotten the information for the tweets. mark levine on thursday evening talked about what he called a big scandal raising questions whether the obama separation surveilled members of the trump campaign and by friday morning

some have said that he's trying to deflect. but to what? because the conversation at large is still about russia, which is not a conversation he wants to be having. he had a successful speech. he doesn't want to be talking about this stuff. >> if you want to understand it, i think you look at the history of the practice and psychology of the president. he wants to be shown being aggressive and showing strength from his point of view after a week which are tstarted on wels his speech and then having the attorney general recuse himself, feeling like his staff wasn't defending him enough. so you say he's not great at deflection. from his point of view, it shows him on offense. but he needs to stable liz washington and the world again. i think they hope these allegations into away. i think his staff is sorry it happened because it is a distraction. not so much from russia, but from the

that's why he's there, to try to actually pass things. >> and it's a big ahead on that, as we would. thank you. another major story out of the white house today, the trmpd administration preparing to unveil a revised travel ban after his first one was met with controversy, confusion and protests. hallie jackson with the latest for us. >> reporter: good morning. a senior administration official tells nbc news that details about this revised executive order are expected to be revealed at the department of homeland security today. the president himself is not expected to be there. all of it marking the start of a relaunch on one of the president's most controversial pledges. today the administration expected to roll out the president's new immigration executive order. this one among his most controversial, a revised version of his on-hold travel ban, changed to try to keep it from getting tied up in legal battles like the original. that one

temporarily banned immigrants from seven mostly muslim nations. now new questions about the new order. will it allow immigrants from iraq for example. or refugees from syria. previously banned indefinitely. the original executive action sparking protests across the country, confusion at some airports. the trump administration defending how quickly it moved that first time. >> if we waited five days, ten days, six months, to begin establishing the first series of controls, we'd be leaving the homeland unnecessarily vulnerable. >> reporter: since then, a noticeable slowdown despite the president tweeting on february 4th that the court action putting a temporary hold on his move meant many very bad and dangerous people may be pouring into our country. on february 9th, a circuit court upheld the temporary hold. the next day, president trump hirnted at the timing of

that is simply false. meantime fbi director james comey has asked the justice department to publicly reject president trump's allegations. the fbi is joining the investigation into the shooting of a sikh man. he was approached by a man in his driveway, they got in an argument and he was shot in the arm. the suspect apparently said, go back to your own country, before the shooting. and 20 million people across parts of the south and midwest are bracing for severe storms that includes the possibility of tornadoes from northern arkansas to missouri. now, to a scandal that's rocking the u.s. marine corps. the defense department now investigating hundreds of marines after nude photographs of their female colleagues were discovered on a secret facebook page. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer has more on that this morning. >> reporter: despite the phrase, th

proud this morning. hundreds in its ranks appear to be caught up in a social media scandal, first brought to light by a veteran who is speaking out this morning. mistrust rocking the marine corps, following troubling allegations of cyber betrayal. pictures of more on two dozen naked women, surfacing on a private facebook page called marines united, with almost 30,000 followers. the network allegedly solicited photos of female service members, who were identified by their full name, rank and duty station. some of the photos apparently taken without the women's knowledge. more than 2,500 comments, which contained graphic language and condoned rape, was revealed by the war horse, a nonprofit news organization, run by marine veteran thomas brennan. brennan found the photos scrolling through facebook and recognized a former marine. >> seeing a
