it will be another very mild afternoon and even with the rain chances here early this morning we are definitely looking for a mild finish to the day. current winds though, winds out of the west and the northwest gusting as high as 30-mile-per-hour or more at times. so as the kids are going out to the bus stop, between now and 7:00 a.m. still a risk of a couple of passing showers but we should be blowing the rain drops out of here and blowing the clouds out of here as well by late into the afternoon. a peek at the weekend forecast because i know that's what you're caring most about, coming up in a few more minutes. it was the march that sparked a movement and today the organizers are encouraging women across the country to stay home from work and there are a lot of ways the march could impact you. we want to give you a look at what you need to know about today's women -- a day without a woman event. the organizers of the

march on washington want women to stay home and take the day off from paid and unpaid labor. the group wants to call attention to wage inequality, gender discrimination and job insecurity. across the world day is international women's day. women in more than 50 countries plan to strike to raise awareness about gender violence, reproductive lights, labor rights and environmental protection. women are also asked to avoid shopping and in stores and online. the exception is shopping at local small businesses and women and minority owned companies. now, women and men are being encouraged to wear red today as well. red represents revolutionary love and sacrifice and has a history with the labor movement. men are also being asked to help with domestic chores and care giving. they're being encouraged to rally for equal pay and other work place issues for women, with women and you can also find a list of all the different events happening today on the nbc washington app.

held today as well and two events will have a noticeable impact on the district. at 11:00 this morning women plan to march from freedom plaza to the white house. then at 3:30 this afternoon supporters plan to march down c from the u.s. department of labor to john marshall park. it has also sparked some local schools to shut down for the day. >> those include prince george's county, center city public schools and alexandria public schools. >> erika is live in prince george's county with a look at why some districts made the call to close as well as those charter schools. >> reporter: that's right. so we're here at pointer ridgel men trischool. this -- elementary school. this is a call based on numbers. when you are missing 1,700 teachers and about 30% of your transportation staff, how do you function? those numbers

by dr. kevin maxwell, ceo of schools in prince george's county. maxwell said the county could not provide safe and productive learning without adequate staff and went on to apologize for the inconvenience. this also impacts some schools in d.c. and northern virginia. a day without a woman boycott organizers, the same ones behind the women's march on washington that happened right after the election are calling for a one-day strike around the world. to spotlight the role women play in society and suggest women take part in rallies and marches near then. the boycott is also expected to have a huge impact on local businesses. for more on that angle, you can read the story on my facebook page. we're live in prince george's county this morning. back to you. all right. thank you. now, the closures have a lot of parents scrambling to find child care today. there is some relief for parents in alexandria. the city's out of school ti

mourn with the people of this tragedy. >> we are hearing from some of the witnesses. >> these were people that were up close, got a personal look at this horrific scene. take a listen. >> the ones who did get deceased, they got stuck in the door and when the train hit it was pretty much -- it was pretty much end of that. they kind of got flung out from there, so it was definitely, you know, it was a disturbing scene. >> one person saying it sounded like a huge explosion. photos of the mangled bus here. that bus being towed away after being struck, pushed 300 feet down the track. four people died. many people on board were hurt. some people were cut from that wreckage and we also know that one person was trapped underneath the train and had to be rescued. officials at this point still not sure why the tour bus got stuck and was

a lot of senior citizens were on this bus. they were taking a trip to a casino. the ntsb going to join the federal railroad administration investigating this. looking at the time in about an hour or so they plan to brief the media before they depart to that scene there. back to you, aaron. >> all right. thank you. it's 5:08. now to president trump's first 100 days. as many women will be taking the day off today the first lady will host a luncheon at the white house. the gathering will mark international women's day. the president has said that his wife will focus on women's issues as part of her platform. in the oval office this afternoon president trump will have a closed door meeting with elijah cummings. the two are expected to discuss ways to make medications more affordable. lawmakers will begin debating the bill meant to replace the affordable care act. some of the toughest opposition could come from other republicans.

why not all conservatives are getting on board. team work helped to catch the man who killed a security guard at potomac mills mall. police say he killed a security guard outside the burlington coat factory. someone spotted him in d.c. jed morning a -- yesterday morning called 911. >> he gave me a description head to toe. i stayed on the line. when i heard an officer in the background, he stated to me, he's running. so i said if he's running that's him. >> sharon jones says she praised the caller for doing the right thing. he'll stay here in d.c. until he's extradited back to virginia. it's been a tough year at west lake high school and today students and staff will honor four seniors who died. two were killed in a crash last friday. the c t

speeding. hicks was shot and killed in a parking lot behind a movie theater in october. and another senior, caleb horn also died suddenly last july. students and staff are planning a vigil from 6:00 to 7:00 tonight in the west lake stadium to remember their classmates. well, this was something you'd see in a movie, but it happened at the viesmo take a look at the scene here. prince george's county police say a burglary suspect tried to avoid getting arrested yesterday evening by climbing into the ceiling of the theater. he came down but not before causing a whole lot of damage. officers say every time he moved pieces of the ceiling tiles would fall. the man's name has not been released. as we mentioned you are going to notice some gusts of wind if you're leaving for work soon. >> that's not all though. some of you might see some rain. >> yeah. if you're anywhere up through the district you've been dealing with rain especially along 95. that's quickly going to clear though and todayre

maybe some wet snow flakes early on sunday. by sunday afternoon windy and cold. temperatures running 20 to 30 degrees below average. it is 5:15 now. manuel noriega is in critical condition after undergoing two brain surgeries. he suffered a hemorrhage from removing a benign brain tumor. they had to do another surgery to stop the bleeding. he was ousted by u.s. invasion and jailed in the u.s. on drug charges. it's been three years since a plane went missing over the sea -- the south china sea. this remains one of the world's strangest modern mysteries. malaysia airlines flight disappeared on march 8, 2014, exactly three years ago today. 239 people were on board.

a lawsuit filed last week claims the plane crashed because of a series of catastrophic failures including a loss of electricity on board. it is impossible to know exactly how the plane crashed because the black boxes were never recovered. you are looking at footage from the 2011 massive magnitude 9 earthquake off japan's coast. it killed more than 15,000 people. japan will commemorate the anniversary of that disaster on saturday. tsunami waves towered 13 to 16 feet high and crashed through homes. thousands of people were left homeless. the earthquake is one of the five most powerful ever recorded in the world. the latest hack of american secrets may hit closer to home than others wikileaks is suggesting all of your devices could be turned into listening devices by the

now with melissa mollet. still a problem on 95? >> still a problem 95 southbound. so take a look at this live picture from the scene. this is 95 southbound here at 619 triangle. still a big response on the right side of the roadway so you can get by on the left side. the problem is, it is still quite slow. bigger than a one-mile backup right now this morning. so you can see that problem there through the quantico area. 66 into town. no problems and 95 northbound is unaffected here. 270 southbound from frederick down to the spur, you're okay. a couple of spots of slowdowns here this morning perhaps because of what's falling from the sky. speaking of that, how are we going to handle this rain this morning? >> the good news is it's nothing all that heavy and it will be out of here before really 7:00 or 8:00 in the morning gets around. so by the time it gets toward the middle and tail end of the morning commute, everything should be drying out quickly. but for now, early risers and early out the door people are going to be dealing with rain

are closed today. so are all six center city public charter schools in the district. angie is here to show us the social media movement that's also growing this morning. >> and a lot of this buzz started in recent days. both international women's day and a day without a woman is trending all over the place now. this is organized by the same people who organized women's march here in washington right after the inauguration. they're saying they do not want you to work or shop today, but if you have to go to the office, that you can show your support by wearing red. also, something that we're seeing a lot online is just this square red box. this, you may notice it today. a lot of celebrities on this and that is the color that symbolizes showing they're not there. so schools say they did not take the decision lightly to close and a lot of people talking about school closings this morning. share your stories

facebook, twitter and instagram. back to you. >> thank you. when we're showing you the school closures all morning at the bottom of your screen. much more on the impact on businesses and restaurants on the nbc washington app. it is 5:34. an argument on the road went too far in maryland and now one man is recovering from shooting injuries. police say two men got out of their cars on the shoulder of the road on u.s. 340. things got heated and police say the 26-year-old man shot the other driver in the leg and foot. it's not really clear how this argument started at this point. here's another reminder to be careful the next time you gas up your car. more credit card skimmers have been found. this time at a shell station in arlington. police say four were discovered on pumps at the station. police don't know whether any credit card information was stolen. metro could vote to raise

service starting july 1st. bus fares would go up a quarter and parking could go up 10 cents. that's not all. your metro bus line could be going away for good. 13 bus lines could be cut to close a budget gap. one of them is the 2t bus. metro says two lines that could be cut would leave riders without another transit option. we're talking about the w 19, indian head highway express line and the 13y arlington to union station line. the metro board will discuss the proposal tomorrow ahead of a final vote on march 23rd. >> now, there is a big catch in a new bill to raise maryland's minimum wage to $15 an hour. it would only continue as long as the state economy is doing well. the proposal raises the minimum wage every year to reach $15 an hour by july of 2022. the democrats sponsoring the bill says the increases could

a florida couple wants answers after a cruise ship ends up so close to their house it had to be put in reverse. can you imagine the homeowner recorded the incident on her phone. it happened in fort lauderdale. the couple says they see cruise ships all the time, but nothing like this. >> never seen anything that close. never to where the ship has had to stop, put itself into reverse, back out into the channel. >> celebrity cruises says the ship was in its assigned channel and operated safely. the couple says

it is a familiar scene. students forced out of classrooms by bomb threats. >> the latest one happened just yesterday at the bender jewish community center in montgomery county. justin finch is live with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: aaron, good morning. the montgomery county council is taking these threats quite seriously. so much so they're considering a measure of some $225,000 to further invest in security here at bender and other jewish centers in the wake of this latest round of threats. let's take you now to video here right now the council is considering that six figure measure which is a grant proposal. the goal here to assist threatened jewish centers including bender jcc in paying for additional security. county executive pitched this measure. it comes at bender gets its sixth bomb threat since january. all

already killed six people and evacuations are in the thousands already. firefighters hoping that calmer winds today will work in their favor in fighting these fires. so far hundreds of homes and properties have been damaged. you can see just how intense it is. in texas the largest fire spreading across two counties was estimated at more than 92,000 acres and right now is only 25% contained. now back to you. thank you. investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked a brush fire near greenbelt national park. chopper 4 flew over the flames yesterday. firefighters say windy conditions helped fuel the fire, but the rain later helped put it out. a college dorm room was on fire in northwest washington. the building was evacuated near m street. one firefighter was hurt in the response. we're told this started on a couch on the fourth floor. a pile of

caught fire but it's not clear how that happened. the fire was quickly contained. today a vigil will be held to remember four charles county students who died this year. all of them were seniors at west lake high school. two were killed in a crash last friday. police say the driver had been speeding. hicks was shot and killed in a parking lot behind the movie theater in october. another senior also died suddenly last july. tonight's vigil will begin at 6:00 at west lake stadium. congress is closer to approving a law to make federal government buildings more mom friendly. last might the u.s. house passed a bill that would require each building to have sufficient lactation spaces for breast-feeding. a recent news 4 iteam investigation found several federal government buildings lacked the spaces required. white house tours are back

president trump surprised the first set of visitors to his new home. he popped out behind a wooded screen just as a group of children was waiting for their tour to start. the president motioned for the kids to gather around him. only one ten-year-old alabama kid was bold enough to go over there and get a hug. maybe we'll see some more surprises on the white house tours. >> secret service can make you a littleant si. do i go or do i stay? >> we are heading into spring with students and parents in loudoun county already thinking about summer. an online petition is asking officials to shorten the school year since loudoun county hasn't used any snow days this winter. the petition has more than 1,400 signatures now. loudoun county public schools say end of year exams and graduation are already set and changing the dismissal date is unlikely. >> we are turning our attention to the windy, windy day we are in store for. >> and because we didn't get any snow at all in the

you might get rerouted if you are driving on the 395 hov lanes in virginia later tonight. vdot crews will start to do road work starting at 8:00 p.m. it will run until 4:00 p.m. the closures will remain through friday and new hours will go in place this weekend and into next week. crews are preparing for summer construction projects. today at the white house, president trump will have a closed door meeting with maryland congressman elijah cumings. they will discuss ways to make medication more affordable. the president has promised to support efforts to stop the skr skyrocketing prices of prescription drugs. today lawmakers will begin debating the plan that will replace the affordable care act. edward lawrence joins us live from capitol hill to explain why some conservatives say the plan is too generous.
