reaction from parents this afternoon. we begin with news 4's meagan fitzgerald. >> reporter: protesters are in front of the department of labor. i'm not sure if you can see all the way down behind us here on 3rd street, but they are protesting and asking for things like work place equality for women, an end to work place discrimination, and asking for equal pay for equal work for women. of course earlier today we were there as protesters made their way to the white house. >> if we don't get it -- >> shut it down. >> reporter: just before noon, hundreds of people started their march to lafayette square. protesters chanting slogans and holding signs which advocate for women's rights. the demonstrations were part of a day without a woman strike which called on women to wear red, stay home from work, and to protest. >> i came out because i wanted to support all the women tha

>> i think it's important that the country know that women are standing together. >> women literally are the backbone of this entire country and this entire world. without women, we wouldn't be here. i need to be here in solidarity. >> reporter: these protesters say they will continue their efforts heading to congress to make sure their congress members understand that women's rights should be a priority. back to you. >> all right, thanks, meagan. for thousands of kids in our area the day without a woman means a day without school, and some parents are mott happy about it. prince george's county decided to cancel classes late in the day tuesday after hundreds of teachers and staff members asked for the day off. school ceo dr. kevin maxwell says they couldn't pull off a normal day with so many teachers out of their classroom. we spoke with a single mom who works for the school system and has a daughter who is a student. >> well, i mean, it's just a day with no school, i guess.

have to take my daughter to school with me. i didn't get the chance to take the day off. why should they? i think the whole thing is stupid. i mean, we already did the march and all that other stuff. why another day for this? >> in d.c. center city public charter schools closed all six of its campuses because of a lack of staffing. schools in the city of alexandria also closed. and yesterday officials tweeted that they didn't make that decision lightly. >> people around the world took part in international women's day. in rome transit workers staged a walkout today bringing buses, trans and metro to a halt. rallies across italy were meant to draw attention to the gender pay gap in that country. and a new bronze statue popped up overnight in the financial capital of the world. the fearless girl statue stands in front of the iconic wall street charging bull in downtown manhattan. a plaque at her feet reads, know the power of women in leadership. our coverage f

over. at 4:30 we'll hear from mark segraves. he spoke with school officials responding to some of the criticism. and you'll hear why they decided to cancel classes. we'll show you how first lady melania trump marked this international day of women. a former maryland delegate has been indicted in the probe of corruption of the prince george's county liquor board. tracee wilkins joins us live now from greenbelt. tracee? >> reporter: the u.s. attorney for maryland said that this corruption probe is about checking people who were abusing power. and now today we've seen another indictment. former maryland state delegate michael vaughn appeared after a grand jury indicted him monday on eight counts of bribery, conspiracy, and wire fraud. according to vaughn's 20-page indictment he took more than $10,000 in payments in exchange for his supporting two bills regulating sunday liquor sales

he's also charged with stealing thousands of dollars from his own campaign account and submitting fraudulent campaign expense reports to the state. the government says vaughn used that money to pay his personal credit card expenses and money owed to the irs. i asked michael vaughn if he had any comment. his attorney said no comment from vaughn and that everything that needs to be said will be said in this courthouse when he has his crime. coming up at 5:00, reaction from annapolis. reporting live in greenbelt, i'm tracee wilkins, news 4. >> all right, it tracee, thank you. pat and i were talking about this next story a couple minutes ago before the show went on the air. just in this afternoon officials are changing the cherry blossom forecast again. >> the national park service released new peak bloom ed

reach peak bloom between march 19 and the 22nd. the original prediction was for them to peak between march 14-17. however, the colder air through the early part of next week is expected to delay the blossoms. and delaying those blossoms because we saw such cold air coming down over the weekend and again coming into the weekend this week, too, as we look outside right now temperatures in the 60s. and those 60s all across our region. temperatures 67 degrees currently at the airport. 68 in richmond. 63 in hagerstown. another very warm day tomorrow. boy, do things come crashing down. the temperatures, that is, as we head into the weekend. we're talking about temperatures well below average, close to 15 degrees to 20 degrees below average. we'll talk about that. yes, still talking snow chances. we'll be back in just a minute. >> thanks, doug. a chilly morning for a run. theo

to settle back in. witnesses say construction workers saw the flames this morning near 15th and u street. the apartments were on fire. someone walking by heard the construction crew screaming and called 911. these ladies tell us everyone kept their cool during the evacuation. >> i was out for a walk and i looked back and the place was on fire. >> the fire alarm rang and i looked at it in the hallway. everybody was rushing out, so i got my coat and came. >> a little scary? >> hmm? >> was it a little scary? >> no. i saw smoke and i got out of there. >> and you're safe. >> i'm good. >> now no one was hurt and paramedics didn't have to take anyone to the hospital. investigators are trying to figure out how it started. well, it's a new twist on an old scam. >> the personal information these crooks used to convince a local couple they were the real deal. ae

last year three members of one family died at that intersection when a man driving 110 miles per hour slammed into their car. the meeting tonight takes place at the walt whitman high school auditorium. it starts at 7:00. first at 4:00, a woman in alexandria is facing several charges after leading police on a chase with two young kids in the car. fairfax county police tried to pull over monique reid for a traffic violation yesterday. instead of stopping officers say she took off. they caught up to her a short time later and found drugs and two kids in the back. now she's accused of drug possession, eluding police, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. the rock 'n' roll washington, d.c., marathon will bring more than 25,000 runners to town this weekend. and with all of those runners here you can bet on travel trouble. news 4's transportation reporter adam tuss is working with you on four things you need to know. adam is live now at f

yes, springtime means a whole slew of new races in the district. this is the first big one here, the rock 'n' roll marathon and the half marathon. here is what you need to know for the race saturday. there's going to be a broad range of street closures mostly around the monuments. most begin between 6:00 and 7:00 saturday morning. all roads should reopen by 1:45 saturday afternoon. now streets along the racecourse will be marked with no parking signs, those no parking zones begin at midnight saturday. they last until about noon. if you park there you could get towed and you might have to pay to get your car out. metro, that's a no go for runne runners. trains start running at 7:00 in the morning, the same time the marathon begins. runners can reserve parking at rfk by going online. and the d.c. street car won't be running the morning of the marathon. service will begin saturday afternoon when the race is over. they haven't given us an exact time but it will likely be afternoon. a premarathon

it started with a phone call -- a local couple swindled out of more than $11,000. they thought their grandson was in trouble. you know, we've warned you about these scams before but this time the thieves unveiled a new trick. >> consumer reporter susan hogan has the story. >> reporter: the couple tells us they are well aware of the so-called grandparents scams that are making the rounds, but they never questioned that they were actually talking to their grandson himself because the caller got personal. >> these are the target cards. >> reporter: sally beaver sorts through the thousands of dollars in gift

husband bought to help their grandson, j.r. >> he called us by our nicknames, which right off the bat we immediately thought it was him. >> reporter: j.r. is in the air force. he was in washington state for training last november when they got the call. >> he said he'd gone into canada to a friend's birthday party and he had wrecked the rental car that he was driving. >> reporter: he told them he needed $4,000 for damage to the car. >> go to target in leesburg and get gift cards, $1,000 gift cards. when he called back again he wanted the numbers off the back of them. >> reporter: later that afternoon another call. more money was needed to pay for the damaged guardrail. >> to the tune of $5,500 this time. >> reporter: the caller sent them to this giant store in leesburg and told them to ask for a sp

>> that she was holding 11 itunes cards, $500 each. >> reporter: they had apparently called ahead and put the cards on hold. and then the next morning -- >> the guy whose car i hit is here and he needs $2,000 in cash, so here we go again. >> reporter: another trip to target to buy more gift cards. the next day when the phone rang again, they'd had it. >> and that's when i said, j.r., we have reached the limit. we have no more money. you have to call your dad. >> reporter: they discovered they'd been conned when they called to check on him the following week and he had no idea what his grandparents were talking about. >> there was never ever one time that i thought that it was someone else. but looking back there probably were times we should have asked other questions. >> even when

across the u.s. as people take a stand to mark a day without a woman. it's also been a day without school for thousands of children across the area and the country. >> yeah, that's right. schools in prince george's county and alexandria decided to close today because so many teachers and staff members requested the day off. nbc's mark segraves say that decision angered parents and local leaders. >> reporter: from a distance it looks like a typical school day in alexandria but it's not. the schools are closed here today because it's a day without a woman, and this school system as well as prince george's county schools and other private schools chose to take the day off to allow the female teachers to participate in the protests. that has angered some local politicians and some parents. >> and how does it become a laudable goal to say i'm not going to go tok

international women's day with a speech tonight at the kennedy center. the former democratic presidential nominee will speak at the 16th annual veital voice global leadership awards. vital voices is a women's leadership group she founded. clinton will also deliver this year's commencement address at her alma mater. elijah cummings just met with president donald trump at the white house. the pair have is had a rocky relationship since mr. trump took office. cummings said he and the president were able to find some common ground. >> i told him that i was glad he was able to meet with the presidents of the black colleges and universities, and i said to them the most important thing for those colleges and universities right now is they need funding. >> mr. cummings said he also spoke with the president about the republican health care plan and the allegat

here are four things to know this afternoon. the cherry blossoms won't reach their peak until march 19th at the earliest. that's the word today from the national park service. it blames the expected delay on the cold that we're tracking for the weekend. and you'll want to stay away from parks in downtown d.c. saturday morning. as many as 25,000 runners are coming to town for the rock 'n' roll washington, d.c., marathon. lawmakers on capitol hill are debating the republican plan to repeal and replace the affordable care act. the american medical association represents about 200,000 physicians. today it rejected the new proposal. people here and across the country are taking part in a day without a woman demonstrations. not everyone is happy

her ex-boyfriend shot her in the parking lot of a target store in germantown. now he was legally able to buy the gun despite having a felony conviction on his record. the push is on to change that. news 4's chris gordon is following developments in annapolis. >> reporter: the mother says it will very difficult for her to come here today to annapolis to testify on behalf of a bill that would close a dangerous maryland gun control loophole. she says that to allow a convicted felon to purchase a replica handgun could be deadly. she cites the case of her daughter whose ex-boyfriend bought a handgun online despite the fact that he had been convicted of a sexual offense previously. >> he's a sex offender, and i guess he used a loophole over the internet to get the replica

we're back in the 30s and looking for snow on tuesday in the area. right now we're in the 60s. 67 in washington. 64 in frederick as well as leesburg. beautiful sunshine. look at these gusts around 30 miles an hour in washington. the winds do die down but throughout the day tomorrow it's breezy once again. but it's a nice afternoon. look at the high, near 70 degrees, mostly sunny skies throughout the day on your thursday. the weather having a low impact on your day. the commute, the biggest concern are the sunglasses. reset for the kids outdoors and nice again for them to run around and get some energy out. outdoor exercise, comfortable for the afternoon and evening walk or jog. and dinner out, really nice for march. i think you can almost find a spot, an outdoor spot that had the heaters on tomorrow evening and it would be very comfortable. as we look to friday here is w future weather at 7:00 a.m., rain in the metro area and then wet snow mixed for areas to the north including montgomery and washington counties. nothing will accumulate. it is

community center is facing threats. this time from someone targeted a center in west hartford, connecticut. police responded to the building after the security director reported a bomb threat was sent via e-mail today. the staff cleared the building before police got there but they found nothing suspicious. no arrests in the case. the feds say it appears a charter bus full of casino customers became stuck on the tracks right before a freight train rammed into it. the wreck left four people dead and dozens injured. nbc has the details. >> reporter: the ill-fated bus moments before being slammed by a freight train in biloxi where buses and trucks have been getting stuck on railroad crossings for years but none ever ended as tragically as tuesday. >> we need an ambulance, headquarters. >> reporter: 49 passengers on the bus, many of them or

accused of taking payments to try and guide the vote for this bill, but he is also accused of intimidating some of his colleagues and making sure that they supported it. former maryland state delegate michael vaughn appeared in greenbelt federal court today after a grand jury indicted him monday on eight counts of bribery, conspiracy and wire fraud. according to vaughn's 20-page indictment he took more than $10,000 in payments in exchange for his supporting two bills regulating sunday liquor sales in prince george's county. he's charged with stealing thousands of dollars from his own campaign account and submitting fraudulent campaign expense reports to the state. the government says vaughn used that money to pay his personal credit card expenses and money owed to the irs. on the first day of this legislative session, vaughn stepped down from his delegate seat. he represented prince george's county's district 26 since 2003. vaughn's is thees
