the cherry blossom delayed. four high school seniors died this school year. i'll show you how their high school is remembering them all new at 11:00. news 4 at 11:00 begins with breaking news. >> that affected at&t wireless customers around the country. they could not dial 911. >> at&t tweeted the problem has been resolved. we've been working to get the latest information from d.c.'s office of unification. >> reporter: what i can tell you is during the three-plus -- and it may have been longer than that -- outage, it's a situation where people who had at&t phones who were trying to dial 911, and just 911, not anything else, got what appeared to be a busy signal, and it has great potential for a very dangerous

a nationwide situation, and, again, as i said, a very serious, very potentially dangerous situation. i am joined now by allen eder, the spokesman for the d.c. office of unified communications. i understand you have not received official word from at&t yet, and it's a difficult situation to verify because, essentially, you don't know it's not working until someone gets through to you and they can't or, tonight, people using at&t couldn't. tell us about the steps going into place when something like this comes to your attention. >> sure, so once we realized that this is a situation, we want to make sure that our community has the proper numbers to reach us if they need us. we immediately put out a 373, 3700 attention 1 when that oc r occurred. so it's hard for us to understand who is trying to call

do investigation, and that will be done. >> that's the most important thing is right now, we've seen this happen before. at&t said it was resolved, but to be safe, the number you gave us, on the nbc washington app, keep that number handy. you probably should have always have it handy if you can't get through. >> i think that that's a great idea. you know, again, we're seeing information that this has been resolved. you know, we're doing the proper steps here in the city to make sure that our residents are kept safe. >> always something to have a backup in your hand in case. thank you, allen, the d.c. office of unified communications, and, again, information on the nbc washington app, and because i've seen the situation before where it presents itself as a busy signal, if you call 911 and get a a busy signal, if you have a land line phone in the house, use that, call the ten digits

call a family member who does not use at&t service, have them call. go through everything. don't just assume if you hear that busy signal that that means everything is okay. live in southeast washington, news 4. >> good advice. thank you. let's hope they figure out why it happened. seniors graduate from west lake high school exactly three months from today, but four students who were supposed to walk across that stage won't be there. >> that's right. four seniors have died since july. two in a violence crash. last friday, we were in waldorf as classmates remembered their friends and supported their families. >> reporter: a candle light vigil to pay tribute to four west lake high school students who died this school year in waldorf, maryland. >> the loss of our children is always a tragedy. these young men were on track to graduate in less than three

many friends. >> reporter: these students, teachers, and parents are saddened. seniors cole and desmond cook died when their car slammed into a pole last friday. >> so i ask for the west lake family and the family of these four young men to please remember that we are here for you, and we will continue to support you through this difficult time. >> reporter: witnesses said the car was speeding and lost control. police have not said what caused the crash. >> may memories comfort you and bring you peace during this difficult time. >> reporter: and then there's 18-year-old reuel hicks shot behind a movie theater and died five months ago. >> sad that it happened so soon, but everything happens for a reason, and i trust in god. >> reporter: horn is the fourth student to pass away. his mother says he died from a heart condition she unselfishly offers love and support to other mothers who lost their sons. >> i want to send my

families. i have been praying for each one of you. >> reporter: tonight, we learned the school is providing grief counselors for the students and staff. news 4. and intersection near walt whitman high school has seen many crashes include ag deadly accident that killed three members of one family last year. now community members want to see significant safety improvements at river road near brayburn parkway, the back entrance, and crews began adding restrictions and overhead flashers last august, but residents said that's not enough. >> in no way adequately addresses the full set of concerns that the community has about how hazardous the existing intersection is. >> a safety improvement projt

last fall is still not complete. according to the "washington post" the maryland state highway administration says the contractor had significant issues in the field, and that's prolonged the project. coming to the end of a a day without a woman, and activists held strikes and marches around the world. thousands of women and men took the day off work to go to the streets hoping that donald trump would hear their cries that everyone should be treated e equally. >> i came out to support all the women that need equal pay. >> this entire country, this entire world, without women, we would not be here. here in solidarity. >> opportunity for people to go out, they need to vote, run, women do more than just to yell about it. we have to do something about it. >> tomorrow morning, it's back to school for students at prince george's

after schools were closed for demonstrations. >> melania trump held her first solo event, a luncheon at the white house, welcoming 50 women to the state dining room including familiar faces, presidential adviser, education secretary, betsy devos, and ivanka trump. michelle obama surprised students in a d.c. school today, posed for photos with the girls at the education campus for international women's day and participated in a round table discussion about education. well, if you're excited to see the cherry blossoms this month, you have to have a little more patience to see them in bloom. officials changed the date and expect to bloom now to fall between march 19th and the 22nd, a difference of five days from the original prediction. colder temperatures are to blame for the change in date. so colder temperatures will

china under president obama and a former governor of utah. trump waonce called him a lightweight, and the governor called his campaign a race to the bottom. the white house meeting enthusiastic to address the high cost of prescription drug. today, the democratic lawmaker facetimed president trump and among other things, he said they talked about the language the president uses when talking about the african-american community. >> when we hear those words about carnage we're living in, depressed situation, i said it was hurtful. i think he got it. you know, where he goes from there, i don't know. >> he says he found commonground with the president on issues like voter suppression and more funding for historically black colleges. the gop's health care bill is coming under fire from lawmakers inside the party. some feel the plan is just too pricey. others say it won't cover engh

the health care of millions of americans hangs in the balance, and president trump is trying to keep congressional members in line. strict conservatives don't like the tax credits in the bill, and moderate republicans want long-term medicaid expansion. democrats are all lined up against the plan, so the president has to get more republican support to get it passed. >> this is an all hands on deck because we all ran on repealing and replacing obamacare. >> president trump's biggest sales job. it's emotional. there are winners and losers. >> the american association of retired persons and the american medical association are among several groups that have come out against this bill. the president is considering using campaign style events to sell the proposal to the public. >> the opium crisis hit hard across the country and right here in our own backyard. three people died from overdoses and 13 more od, but survived within 24

using the u street system. you're getting new escalators. that's the good news. the bad news? it will take some time. they will close the entrance for six months until the work is completed. until then, there's just one entrance on tenth street near the african-american civil war memorial. the project begins april 3rd as part of the transit agency's $150 million project to replace more than 130 escalators system wide. since the recession, cranes are every, a construction project always somewhere in washington, d.c. may be good for business, but folks who live near 295 say it's a nuance. besides all the noise, their homes are paying the price big time. we spoke with a woman who lived near 295 for 20 years and said she took on more home projects now because of all the surrounding construction. >> i had, look, i had -- this plaster once before,
