it's the ncaa basketball tournament. find out how our local teams did. here we go. storm team4 tracking a major nor'easter. good evening. i am erika gonzalez. you're looking at live pictures from union station. at this time tomorrow it could look very different. amelia draper begins our team coverage from the weather center. >> all the areas along and west of i-95 are under a winter storm warning beginning tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. it will run through tuesday afternoon, coming to an end at 2:00 p.m. washington, arlington, alex andrea. montgomery. fairfax county. everybody in pink. the counties in blue are still under a winter storm watch. what's going to

national weather service will wait to see the track. more information coming in and what the track of the storm will look like. this watch will go to a winter weather advisory or also be upgraded to a winter storm warning. stay tuned for that. looking to the forecast and i will get new information in tonight, we're continuing to see indications of snow accumulations that would support cancelations on tuesday and at least delays on wednesday if not cancelations on wednesday as well. i do have new information about snowfall amounts. i will have that coming up in the full forecast at 11:18. i will walk you through future weather hour by hour, when the snow arrives in your neighborhood and when the event winds down. after the snow winds down, what additional problems we'll be dealing with. it will likely cause power outages and snow covered roads. with that, let's send it out to darcy spencer who is live in arlington where people are getting

what are you seeing tonight? >> reporter: amelia, the kids will be really excited about what you just said about possible school cancelations. we're live across the street from the arlington gym. it's quiet tonight. come tomorrow it will be a different story. on a night like this it may be hard to imagine a snowstorm is on its way. that's what transportation crews are preparing for. interstate 66 in northern virginia among the major roadways treated ahead of the storm. it's expected to start monday evening. crews in arlington county have been pre-treating roads with brine all weekend to prevent the snow from sticking. >> it will give us a start and start to break down the first layer, inch or 2 inches that falls. so it gives us a head-start. this storm looks like it will come in pretty intense, so it will pile up. >> reporter: the trucks and other equipment are

the salt in plentiful supply. >> a lot of the operations guys, this is where they like to shine. some of them have been itching for this and thought that they had been cheated this winter. >> reporter: in montgomery county, the executives say every inch of snow costs almost $1 million to clear. >> we have a plan. i hope we don't have to utilize the plan to the fullest extent because that means we'll be hit with a great deal of snow, ice and wind. >> reporter: in d.c. the team will deploy more than 200 plows by 7:00 monday evening. residents are also getting ready for the first significant snow we have seen in some time. transportation officials are asking people to be off the roads tomorrow afternoon or tomorrow evening before all of this hits. and they're telling us it could take days to get it all cleaned up. erika, back to you. >> while the storm has a bull's eye on our area

probably no snow now that we've waited so long. >> reporter: winter is not done yet. >> because of the snow, metro access is suspending service starting monday at 4:00. and it's not going to run at all on tuesday. metro access service will be restored when it is safe to do so. the metro access call service is contacting affected customers to reschedule the trips. our nbc washington app has everything you need to know to prepare for the snow. just search weather. metro says a d.c. police officer chased a man down part of the green line. the agency briefly stopped trains between branch avenue stations at 7:00 tonight. we are still working to learn what the man was suspected of doing. he is now in custody. train service is back to normal. investigators are trying to figure out how a fire started in a

park. many considered it a staple on oliver street. the big house on the corner built which one of the early mayors. the current owner is also a former mayor. he wasn't home when the fire started last night but rushed back when he got the news. >> right now i don't think i can get even one item out of my house. everything is gone. but fortunately no people died. and we'll get back. >> reporter: herman's dog was home during the fire and did not survive. we're working to learn more about the man who died in this accident. this is video from early this morning on lawrence street nearly kennelworth avenue. you see the car that flipped on its side. we're told the driver is in critical condition. she is 15 years old and missing. police need your help to bring her home. i want you to look at the screen

violent moments caught on a cellphone. the officer you see hitting another man is off the job tonight as investigators consider whether he used excessive force or not. this all started friday afternoon outside a gas station in california. the store clerk says she called the officer for help. she says the man was threatening people. >> at that time he was turning around with his fingers like he was shooting people. i was scared. like, what if he really, you know, has a gun on him, you know? >> the clerk says the same officer has helped in the past, and she was surprised to see him hit the man. the police department released a statement saying in part, quote, it's important that no one make any assumptions without having all the available

just like anyone else. officers are innocent until proven guilty. new at 11:00. somebody made a bomb threat against a jewish community center near rochester, new york, it was just one of six made today. according to the jcc of north america. threats against community centers aren o on the rise. this year centers have received 128 threats. the six cities receiving threats today, houston, indianapolis, vancouver, rochester, milwaukee and chicago. as the fight over health care moves through congress, a top trump administration official claimed today that nobody will be worse off financially under the republican plan. kelly o'donnell has more on the battle over the bill. >> reporter: anxiety over looming changes to the health care law at a town hall meeting held by democratic senator

back to the weather. we know the skiers and snow boarders are excited about the weather headed our way. wisp ski resort says it will reopen this week. it was so warm that the resort had to close a couple weeks ago. the area got 5 inches of snow friday and they've been working overtime to cover the slopes. this is video of the area earlier tonight. it's about a three-hour drive from downtown d.c. they haven't said exactly what day this week they'll reopen. now, your storm team4 forecast. >> love hearing that. great that wisp gets to reopen with the snow heading our way. here is the latest on the winter storm. a lot of it has not changed from earlier. we're starting to see consistency with the computer models. snow continues to arrive between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. tomorrow and continues overnight. the most snow falls from

tuesday. by tuesday evening we are mainly dry. we'll have snow-covered roads north and west of town. this is the heavy, wet snow. great for making snowmen. but it will lead to some power outages across the where area because it weighs down the tree limbs which potentially break bringing down power lines. it's looking like it will stay in southern maryland. your totals there greatly reduced because you're dealing with rain and sleet, the wintery mix. it's the sleets into the district that bring our amounts down more. the forecast is still evolving and changing. chuck is in tomorrow morning with the latest and tom and doug here in the afternoon. we have you covered on wtop 24/7. i start you off at 7:00 p.m. coming home from work, be home by 5:00, 6:00 and you'll be fine. get off the roads if

them on tuesday so crews can clean up. at 7:00 p.m. we see snow moving in from the south. 10:00. it's snowing everywhere. notice the bright blue colors. this is heavy snow. we could see 1 to 2 inches per hour. i wouldn't be surprised if somebody reports thundersnow with the system. also notice, though, at midnight this is the rain/snow line. st. mary's, calvert counties. the totals are so much lower. looking to early tuesday morning, we could see the line sneaking near the district. fairfax, arlington. alexandria and prince george's. in loudoun and montgomer showers throughout the day. after that a wintery mix possible throughout the day. here is the map. i haven't changed it from earlier based on the new in

numbers. washington, arlington, alexandria. southern fairfax, all of prince george's and anne arundel counties picking up 3 to 6 inches. the sweet spot is north and west of town. montgomery. loudoun. northern prince william and fairfax. frederick county, maryland, as well as virginia seeing 6 inches to a foot of snow. some people i think will have a little over a foot of snow. this is one of the areas of low pressure that we will be tracking. another one down here. you can barely see it. they'll merge together and cause a major nor'easter that impacts not just us but new york and boston with potential blizzard conditions up there. tomorrow evening through tuesday, a storm team 4 weather alert. after that, windy and cold and we're dealing with blowing snow tuesday afternoon and wednesday. >> not good news for the

can you spell success. 65 kids from around the county competed in the annual fairfax county spelling bee today. they took turns spelling some pretty tough words. many of which i can't even pronounce. quite the spelling. the winning word, um, also pretty big there. it was bittersweet. take a listen. >> i am excited and a little sad because i really wanted my sister to win. i wanted to be her runner-up because it's her last year. but i am still pretty excited. >> she and other older sister have been practicing spelling together for an hour a day. she'll move on to the scripps national bee in may. adam tuss and i will be hosting the washington spelling
