good morning, i'm chuck bell, winter storm across parts of the great lakes and upper midwest is coming our way and promises accumulating snow before the sun comes up tomorrow. how much and how long it lasts coming up. >> with snow on the way, everyone from road crews to police to schools are on alert. we have new information on when roads will be treated and how you can track the snow plows as soon as they hit the roads. >> this storm will have a big impact, a powerful nor'easter could bring blizzard conditions to the north. how it could affect travel up and down the east coast. >> good mornin

>> we're joined by storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell who gets us started with the latest on the snow forecast. chuck, good morning. >> good morning. yes, indeed, keeping a close eye on radar for a chance for accumulating snow is coming our way and arrives late today into the overnight hours tonight. winter storm warnings are up. skies are mostly sunny for now, that won't be the case for much longer, clouds race in during the afternoon. winter storm warnings, all of these bright pink counties montgomery, arlington, fairfax and everywhere north and west of the corridor winter storm warning. anne arundel, towards fredericksburg, widespread amounts from the northwest suburbs of washington and north and westbound of pennsylvania border. widespread amounts of 6 inches or more are likely. right here in washington, an inch is a sure bet. i'm competent we'll get

to 4 to 5 inches, confidence in more than that is starting to fade as the newer computer guidance is indicating that the rain/snow line may get further north. the longer it is over us, the more impact it has on keeping snow totals down. right now we're in the 30s to around 40 degrees across the area now. precipitation not likely to start and if it does, it will start mostly as light rain across southern maryland, 6 or 7:00 or 8:00 tonight. once the sun goes down, things change over to quickly mostly snow around here, snow likely from 10:00 tonight until about sunrise tomorrow. exactly how much to expect in a few more minutes. >> whether your neighborhood is forecasted to get 1 inch or 12 inches, road crews are getting ready. >> justin finch picks up our coverage out of chantilly. vdot it rolling out the

justin. >> reporter: angie, good morning. trucks coming and going and by this afternoon vdot hopes to have 4,000 pieces of equipment like the trucks over there in place as the snow starts stacking up. vdot hasn't given up either as the tok ticks closer to snowfall, pay loads firmly in place before they hit major northern virginia roads starting today. this weekend vdot crews have been working to get ahead of the storm loading salt and mixing and spreading road brine almost as fast as they can make it. >> we have water added to it and agitator to break it down into a water mixture. >> since last month left us with spring like days many thought we would bypass snowfall but snow or

during their investigation. it is back open now. we do have breaking news the former mayor of the city of fairfax pleaded guilty in court just minutes ago, pleading guilty to the distribution of meth. he was taken back to jail after that plea and silver thorn was arrested in august by fairfax county police after a sting tahoe tell in tyson's corner. he was caught trying to trade drugs for sex and he'll be sentenced in june. the justice department is facing a major deadline today. lawmakers are asking the department to produce evidence backing up president trump's claims that former president obama tapped phones at trump tower last year. counselor to the president kellyanne conway was pressed earlier. >> what jim clapper has said on other networks, not this one, those organizations under his per view did not do this but that didn't include

a hover board fire that killed a little girl is being blamed for the death of a firefighter over the weekend. the hover board caught fire while it was charging and the 2-year-old died inside the home. the firefighter died in a car crash while driving to the fire. this morning two other children are still recovering from serious injuries. today the man accused of jumping the white house fence friday night is expected to be in court. the secret service says jonathan tran from california made it on the south grounds before he was arrested. the incident is raising new concerns over security at the white house. nbc's peter alexander has more. >> reporter: it's another stunning breach of one of the world's most secure residences. the intruder nearly reaching the south entrance of the presidential mansion. the whole episo

president was home. officials say the intruder wearing a back pack scaled a security fence between the white house and treasury building on pennsylvania avenue. hiding behind a pillar before he was spotted and stopped on the south lawn. court documents say the suspect, 26-year-old jonathan tran of california told a secret service officer i'm a friend of the president. i have an appointment. officials say tran was carrying two cans of mace, a u.s. passport and laptop computer and book written by mr. trump and letter to the president about russian hackers. tran also said in the letter he's been called quiz frkiz fr n schizophrenic. >> it was a troubled person. they did a fantastic job. >> reporter: at the white house reception he complimented joe clancy who retired a week ago. >> what a job. from day one, i have felt safe. >> reporter: over the last two years sal

and succeeded getting into the white house grounds including omar gonzalez who was armed with a knife in 2014 when he made his way deep into the white house. gonzalez pled guilty in 2015. last year the secret service added small spikes to the top of the 6-foot fence surrounding the white house and last month federal agency signed off on plans to raise the height of the fence to 11 feet by next year. >> that was peter alexander reporting. there are still a lot of unanswered questions, most significantly how the intruder got so far before he was seen. the court documents do not make any reference to alarms going o off. >> as the white house and congress consider building a new board are wall, the feds are training those right in our area. a chance to go inside a massive facility where border agents are learning how to

well, you know it is serious when snow is falling on the beach. >> that's not right. >> this is video that comes to us out of north carolina. flurries in this resort town, not much of a vacation for a lot of people although that would probably be pretty cool to see. doesn't look like anyone tried to build a snowman or sand castle out there. batds news for cherry blossom lovers the trees are danger from the national cold snap, anything below 27 degrees can damage them. the tidal basin may spare the blossoms by acting as a thermal blanket to the trees. >> absolutely. >> chuck, it's one thing for us winter haters but another thing to mess with cherry blossoms -- >> the blossoms -- right next to the tidal s

down at sea level. since the water isn't frozen, the 40 degree basin temperature of the water does actually help to moderate the air immediately around the basin. so that being said, just know the other thing we'll be working against the blossoms is a heavy wet accumulating snow and a lot of wind. heavy wet snow and wind can be more problematic than the cold for the blossoms. the cherry trees themselves will not be that badly impacted and making it through the winter just fine and putting up color again next spring. for now it's a partly sunny to mostly sunny kind of day. one thing to know about the weather, time to get her done. if you have stuff to do outside, get it done before snow tonight. heavy snow likely late tonight and early tomorrow. no matter really where you live around the immediate d.c. metro area, if you're within a few miles of the beltway, major disruptions for tomorrow and relatively slow td

up. we can get heavy snows in march, even later in march than this. the all time record is march of 1942 and 20 years ago to this day, almost 14 inches at dulles airport. we're climbing above the freezing mark and most will be in the upper 30s and low 40s, things get interesting after the sun goes down tonight. here's the high resolution model which brings light rain showers and it will start as light rain near 7:30 tonight into parts of southern maryland. it stays mostly rain until about 10:00 or 11:00. then changes over to mostly snow. with the lone exception of right there southern calvert and saint mary's county eastern shore, all rain there. around town, the combination of the rain and snow is going to make forecasting the amount very, very dicey. again, above freezing today before the snow really starts to move in. there's radar that shows all of the energy back out to our west, bright shaded areas are all

weather advisories, as far as snowfall amounts, one model says before the sun is up tomorrow morning, a solid 3 to 5 inches around the city. by the time everything is done and down, probably going to be somewhere in that 4 to 8 inch range around most of the d.c. metro area, 5 inches at national airport, my over/underline. it will be a lot more snow in northern maryland and northwest virginia, winchester, lees burg and gaugers burg, big winners or losers for snow, depending how you feel about it. southern maryland, far lower amounts of snow to the south and east. we'll be right on the line. here's a check on that extended forecast. i'll show you my zone by zone forecast for how much i think you should expect. a cold and kind of cloudy and flurry filled stretch of weather for tomorrow and wednesday milder by the weekend with temperatures back to near 50. >> all right, chuck, thank you. team usa is alive

storm team 4 predicting 1 to 2 inches of snow could fall every hour once the storm begins tonight. d.c. plans to fully deploy its snow team. 200 trucks will be around the city ready to lay down salt and clear any accumulating snow. mayor bou bowser will have more at the press conference slated for this afternoon. montgomery county is bracing for some of the largest amounts of snow, 6 to 12 inches could fall. we just received word that state troopers will be reassigned to storm duty to help

>> trucks already out salting the roads and pavement. they started to lay down brine this weekend. the mixture will break down first couple inches of the snow. vdot is asking people who don't have to be out on the roads today and tomorrow to please stay home. we have our first school closing already, northern virginia community college closing at 3:00 today and will be closed tomorrow. when we're expecting snow, you can always expect there's going to be a crowd, a hustle and bustle at the grocery store. >> 100%. >> our cameras caught the crowd inside the trader joe's on 25th street. people stocking up on water and snacks in case they have to spend a few days at home. one customer told us the line was out the door at one point. >> it wasn't until i came in here and saw the line out the door that i realized that the snow is coming and people here are stocking up. >> you do need to stock up. you have a little time after work.

the loss of his home and dog after a massive fire. take a look at the flames here. this was a historic home in river dale park many considered a staple, big house on the corner built by one of riverdale's early mayors. current owner is also a former mayor and wasn't home when the fire started saturday but rushed back when he received news. >> right now i don't even think i can get one item out of my house. everything is gone. but fortunately no people died. and we'll get back. >> so far investigators have not figured out a cause. >> some kids in prince george's might have to ride a different ride after several school buses caught on fire. someone noticed the flames yesterday morning and called firefighters to short cut road in brandy wine, four buses were damage and it could cost a quarter million dollars to replace them. firefighters are trying to figure out how

>> there's concerning news for parents this morning. a new study says there's a growing number of kids who are getting hurt while using infant products, talking about carriers and strollers and cribs. researchers found an average of 128 kids per day had to make a trip to the emergency room and majority of injuries are related to kids falling. some moms say products may have a design flaw. >> at the time of course i was beating myself up and assuming i didn't latch it in correctly, to find out in past week i received a recall. >> we can link you to a list of recalled products in our nbc washington app. >> in just a few more hours, someone is getting ready to have the best monday ever. that person bought the winning powerball ticket in last month's $435 million drawing and that person claimed the prize at 4:00 p.m., a sine

tonight's snow could bring good news for maryland's only ski reort wf plans to reopen after being shut down early due to the lack of snow. they had 4 inches fall friday. about 3 to 4 hours from downtown washington, near deep creek lake. resort hasn't said what day it will start welcoming guests. more snow coming and you can get involved in some snow sports right here in washington tomorrow morning there is a snow ball fight happening at dupont circle. the d.c. snow ball fight association, there is such a thing, said this will be the first and last fight of the season.

washington. little bit milder down to our south. 39 in warring ton and still 31 by the bay in annapolis. looblg at the winter storm warnings from the shenandoah valley to up state new york and new england. one is out here across northeastern missouri and another piece of energy coming upg the coastline, they will merge off the virginia capes and that will be the storm that forms into the big blizzard which gives us significant amounts of snowfall here but a serious blast of snow and winter in new york city and boston. they'll get a lot more than us. here's future weather by 8:00 tonight, likely to be mostly light rain or rain/snow combo but by 11:00 it should be most if not all snow. during the overnight hours, all snow upper montgomery county loudo loudoun, you folks are in the bull's-eye for the most snow. the closer to the beltway and

the pink shading is the rain/snow line. all rain south prince george's into south maryland and by 7:00 in the morning the rain/snow line retreating farther south and clearing across southern maryland and leaving us back into snow for most of the daylight hours tomorrow. nothing heavy but quick bursts could leave an extra inch or two after the morning commute tomorrow. even into tomorrow evening there could be a streamer or two of light snow around. how much snow we get depends on how far north that rain/snow line gets and how much of our snow opportunity window is wasted inside the mixed precip. i still think 5 inches at national airport is a solid over/under number but probably close to 10 at bwi. 4 to 8 in the immediate d.c. metro area, maybe closer to 4 if we get the rain in here, north and west will be the big winners easily 8 to 12 inches of snow or
