roads. roads that remain messy in some areas. the key is the temperatures and what is falling in your neighborhood right now. let's start with chuck bell with how much more rain, sleet and snow we're expected to see here. >> it's all but done. >> good news it's moving out. a lot of it is hitting new england. >> they can have it. as well as everybody around here is done with whatever they were going to get. as far as snow totals are concerned, most everybody that got snow only had between 4 and 8 inches around the city a lot less than that. people and animals alike taking advantage and getting outside and having some fun in the snow. this picture out here rolling around in the snow having a grand old time. dogs are loving the snow. other photos of the snow, look at this. the whole family got in and made the

and then as we get out towards columbia, maryland, the bamboo took it on the chin. the chutes nowen bent over with the freezing rain and ice. >> we are watching the precipitation move out because as we have been talking about all morning, it's been an icy mix. now we're seeing it leave the area and leftover snow showers move through. now some light snow through baltimore and even around the district we could still be seeing some very light snow. you're seeing that as well as leesburg and frederick. very light and this will continue to clear out of the area and

that's as far as i'm going. back to the camera here. that was really a lot of fun. i want to thank you guys for racing with me here. that was a great experience. i want to tell you as you can see out here, the snow is really starting to taper off out here in leesburg. that's a good thing because now the families and kids can come out and enjoy the snow just the way we have just a few moments ago. the good news here is that this snow does have that icy, spongy texture from earlier. but it's got a nice, soft snow on top. it's fun to sled in and play in and all the like. we are seeing clouds sucircle t area as well. temperatures here are close

earlier that was nothe case. look at the crash earlier this morning on route 28. this was right by the dulles toll road. this is why we told everyone to stay home earlier. that was a two-car crash and the driver was still in the car when we got into that area to see that crash. and that backed up traffic. but back out here live as we look behind the storm team 4 by 4 and on the side of our 4 by 4 and in froblt front of the 4 by 4, everything looking good on the beltway in this section. so still gives the road crews more time to do what they need to do buzz there's more chemical they can put down and as. temperatures rise, the roads are are really going to start to improve. next thing we need to worry about is the refreezing tonight. we'll keep an eye on that. things looking good. the storm is over. we have a a good

camera underneath the 4 by 4. >> we don't want a that. >> the main road in gaithersburg will be shut down all day most likely. cameras were on the scene after a snowplow lost control and ran into a traffic cig until pap the pole is still lying on the eastbound side of the road. this is the road to take to merge on to 270. so this will affect anyone driving in that area today. >> we have been seeing icy conditions in germantown. if you look at the grill, it's covered in ice. >> looks like some of that has melted. we saw a lot of freezing rain. we are live with an update on conditions. >> reporter: it's looking great out here now. it's still cold and wind

the sky. take a look at german town road. it's down to pavement. it still has some slush and ice. it may not be. clear to primary roads. be careful is the order of the day. . look out for pedestrians. people are starting to stir here. we haven't seen a lot of folks now. one lady used ski poles. most had had to walk gingerly. we have seen quite a few ride on buss, but nobody on them. barely u anyone on them, if any. so folks that are able to stay home are indeed doing that. d

out seem to be few and far between here. at least those who are on foot. traffic is relatively light right now. that's the situation in german town where we're live. back to you. >> progress. we're making progress. if you need to use public tran sut this morning, there are some changes you should know about today. >> e we just learned that the d.c. streetcar has suspended service today because of ice on overhead wires. metro trains are up and running. metro bus service operating on selected routes today. and in maryland, marked trains are running on an r schedule. most have been cancelled because of the storm. there are hundreds of cancellations and two dozen delays at our aurpts.

road conditions vary across the area. slushy, icy, wet, these are live pictures from the storm it team 4 by 4. we're going to check back in with adam tuss in the next half hour with more on what he's running into on the roads. first though, we want the to head back out to fairfax county. >> mark segraves is keeping an eye on things at the fair oaks mall. he has a good look at 66 from there. how are things looking? >> we haveou

the wind is really kicking up. it's really starting to pick up. that's route 66 you just saw some road crews drive by. traffic is loigt. but road spray is going to be the biggest dangers on these roads today. we had it on route 58. and there are some slushy and icy spots that kind of sneak up on you. we saw two cars that are gone off into the ditch because they hit one of the slushy spots. we are seeing a a lot of road crews out treating the roads and plowing off to the shoulders. people seem to be heeding the warnings of staying off the roads and letting these crews do their work. here's a look at route 66. and that road spray and some of that icy slushy spots that are going to sneak up on you.

>> we're talking whiteout conditions and empty airports across can the area this morning. news 4's jay gray has been camped out in central park all morning long. i'm feel iing for you out there. >> good mid-morning. here's what we have going on right now. mostly sleet. you have seen it. we have had snow from midnight last night through much of the morning. and now it's turned to eet. that's what the national weather service told us is going to happen. we're going to have a a mix throughout the rest of the day of scleet and know. maybe even a lult rain med in. it's going to be quite a mess here. we have seen a few people venture out just to take a look. it's beautiful covered in the snow. not a a lot of fun right now. we have seen people walking the dogs and out jogging.

really. so they are open, but i'm not sure it's worth getting out here and getting in all this mess. >> jay gray live in central park this morning, thank you. and did you see jay had a flaps down on the hat. pat mentioned if flaps are up it's not so bad. in new york it's a flaps down kind of day. >> areas closer to us saw a lot of snow. >> we want to go to scott macfarlane. how are the conditions looking there? >> reporter: if you're looking for traditional snow, this is the place. if you're looking for cars buried e beneath snow, this is the area. we drove up here from durwood. you can see on i-70 west in transition from that heavy, slushy sleet to tradition powder. they have a lot of it here. we're off churchill road. a lot of people who commute.

so my apologies for those who had their hopes up. itten wouldn't be the big one in the d.c. metro area. and nonetheless i'm personally slightly disappointed with the amounts around here. national airport recorded 1.7 inches of snow. it brings us to 3.1 for the whole winter. i really thought the d.c. and baltimore areas would be closer to the 4 or 5 inch amounts. fixtures continue to come in. also on instagram and twitter. the leb ri cans knew about the snow-themed snow stick challenge. thanks for sending that in. this snowman here looks like he's kind of flopped right down there. but ashley haynes and her little one building the snowman up

this is not going to be one of the better years for cherry blossom displays on the basen. good news for transportation issues. temperatures above freezing now will really make the roads quite nice by later on today. there will still be refreezing issues overnight tonight. there's a lot of clouds around and a passing flurry or two. the real issue from here on out will be the wind and the cold. these are wind gusts expecting winds 25 to 35 miles per hour for the remainder of the afternoon. the winds stay. up overnight tonight. still very gusty and cold. here's the next five days. only in the mid-30s today. only around 32 tomorrow. and 36 on thursday. but thursday the meltdown starts and saturday we get some rain and temperatures in the 50s. >> thank you, chuck. a look at capitol hill now and the national mall here. snow-covered as you might expect. e we did not get huge a

delay today. you can also work remotely or take a day of leave. it's running on a saturday schedule. let's go live to our crews. >> did you ditch the sled? >> i gave up the sled so the kids could have some fun. i couldn't hog it all by myself. but one evolution we have seen, when i first saw you this morning, we had all that sideway sleet going. then the snow flakes started falling and it's virtually clear. as we get closer to noon, all the kids are out. they are going down that hill. the snowballs are flying out here. had said now it feels like a snow day. he doesn't like being cold, but he does like snow. so me and a 7-year-old we have that in common. over the course of the day, we have seen lots of work o

ground. people shoveling and plows out here hitting the streets over sand over and over again. now it appears as we have this break in the forecast out here that we're reaping the benefits. it is clear. the plow is going by because there's nothing underneath to plow. however, that's not going to be the case all over loudoun county. we have streets that are quite slushy. they are in the melting zone in terms of the snow, ice mixture. you have seen streets that aren't fully plowed. this is virtually untouched snow.

>> i'm seeing that most of the primary roads have been taken care of in prince georges county. the secondary roads a lot of them have been treated. not all of them yet. it's the neighborhood that the county hasn't gotten to yet. 2 to 4 inches is what we're seeing in prince georges county throughout. the northern part of the county, laurel, this area here, they got some of the most. you can see a tree limb down over here. they have quite a few a trees down. this is kind of a heavy, nasty, slushy kind of snow. right now we're get iting more precipitation. we have seen some rain, snow, and this is what we have

this is what you're lifting and getting out of the driveway. it's not a fun, white snow. prince georges county spokesman saying they are going to have crews working until 9:00 p.m. tonight. e we now how this goes. primary roads is the focus. take a look at the secondary roads throughout the county. most of them have been plowed. they are clear. around the county, but other than that, when i was driving around, really no issues on the road, but you shouldn't be speeding. and also we do see a z you're driving from time to time the large puddles that can overtake your vehicle if you hit them too fast. definitely be careful out there. if your neighborhood has not been plowed, the county is working to get that done.

the overnight hours. we have some snow showers left over there on the way out. we are still seeing lingering to the east of the district close to annapolis and a little bit farther off to the west. winchester, down 81, front royal seeing a an area of snow. developing. we expect some snow showers on the backside of this system. the winds are coming in pretty strong from the north and northwest. but really the brunt of this thing has moved up into new england. that's where they are seeing blizzard like conditions. us so far today cumberland saw 10 inches. some of the highest totals. you get to national zoo at 2.5 inches. temperatures are rising above freezing. so that's good. we go through the next few hours and some snow showers blowing in. even by 5:00 p.m. possibly overnight we are in the 20

another live look at road conditions this morning. >> there are some icy spots. a lot of slush out there. darcy spencer has spent the day in college park. so the main roads look like they are pretty clear so far. is that right? >> that's rugt. you want to say pat collins has a snow stick, i have the darcy spencer snow scraper. you're going to need it today to clean off your car. take a look at the slushes here in college park. that's some pretty thick ice out hoir. if you're trying to get around out here, walking, there's some pretty thuk ice out here on the sidewalks. where they are walking, that was shovelled. but this part through here has not been shovelled yet so there's thick ice. you have to keep that in mind. also if

shopping centers, some have been plowed, but there's still icy conditions. let's lock at route 1 coming south here through college park. not far from the university of maryland campus. a a car going through. the roads at this point are just wet. rlier today there were slick spots. we could see slush on the roads. but now if you look along the outer part of the lane, you can see water coming down. so things are beginning to melt. earlier today, i talked to a guy who worked the overnight shift. he had a creative idea to make that job a lot easier. >> i took a towel and put on my windshield to make it easier to clean off. i have the car warmed up. >> back out live here along route 1. you can see the big truck coming through. it looks like they are scraping the pavement. there's nothing here
