especially by the standards of this winter. >> most definitely guys. obviously the biggest storm we saw so far this winter. we talked about this all night last night and all afternoon that this would mostly be a sleet event in the d.c. area and points west. that's exactly what we saw. we said frederick, maryland would be the big winner and that's exactly what we saw. frederick with ten inches of snow. you all got that. winchester at 8.1. vienna, 3.5. national zoo coming in at three inches. they were definitely held down in some areas because of all of the sleet that we saw across our region. we're seeing some more snow. this is another band forcing its way down in towards montgomery county and may clip into the district here over the next hour or so.
4:02 pm
it's all wrapping around our big nor'easter. look at that storm. it is a monster. 30 inches of snow in upstate portions of pennsylvania. we'll continue to watch that, but the big story tonight is going to be the refreeze and the very cold temperatures. tom kierein outside right now. we could set some records here. >> that's right. you could probably hear the wind whipping through here. we've got gusts of wind around 30 miles per hour. you can see the latest radar that is showing snow showers just off to our west. there are things you need to do with that refreeze coming tonight. make sure, first of all, before you drive your car, clear all of the snow off your car. that includes the roof and of course all your windows and make sure you shovel your sidewalk, because the refreeze we're going to have tonight with that sort of slushy, wet snow and sleet that we still have liin

the need for that warm cup of coffee, strong cold winds making their way through right now. we started early this morning. we were in fairfax county. we then made our way here into loudoun county. we tracked all over the area, found many of you cleaning up for what was this year's first real snowstorm. do you recognize that? it's a scraping sound we've not heard for nearly 12 months. and a motor that in some cases is running for the first time. >> this is the first time we've pulled the snow blower out. it's working great. it's moving that stuff no effort at all. >> reporter: neighbors helping each other today in ashburn farm. winter's been rather easy on us this year. do you miss the

this is all right. >> reporter: back to spring, right? >> right. >> reporter: on loudoun county's main roads you can't miss the vdot crews. they've been working since sunday pretreating and clearing the roads. for the kids, it's their first actual snow day. how are the conditions for making snowballs? >> you have to take snow and you squeeze it. then it turns into a ball. >> reporter: is it working pretty well? >> yeah. >> reporter: they burned some energy, pelting each other, all in good fun. it's not a snow day without some downhill racing. across a lot of our area we're seeing progress. what you see here in this shopping center parking lot, a lot of folks working hard throughout the day to keep it clear and keep from that refreeze causing more treacherous conditions out there. but we did find in our travels today some back roads that are troubpo

a lot of the monuments and pieces of art there coated in the nice snow. a lot of people working hard too to make sure it's safe for everybody who decides to venture out. what looks so great on the grass and trees isn't so great for runways. the winter storm having a huge impact on travel. >> in fact, thousands of flights were cancelled today. how are things looking now darcy? >> reporter: it's actually very quiet here at reagan national airport. thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed up and down the east coast because of this severe weather from washington, new york, boston and also chicago. the airlines are trying to now deal with that, with all those cancellations and delays. if you take a look at video, this does not look like a typical day. there's hardly anyone here. we were able to talk to numerous passengers today. some of them had their flights

them today. many of them are here at the airport because they weren't able to rebook. they're just hoping those new flights are not cancelled. one woman was sitting here waiting for her flight. she was actually happy because she got an early warning about her cancellation. >> we got a call on the cell phone last night before we left for the airport. >> reporter: you knew that your night was cancelled before you got here? >> before i got there, yes. >> reporter: and that seems to make a big difference for a lot of passengers today who told me they received either a phone call or text message letting them know their flight had been cancelled. some people were able to get a hotel last night, then come back to the airport today. that was not the case for everyone. we're going to have more stories from the airport coming up on news4 at 5:00. we know public school students in d.c.,he

six inches of snowfall. >> notice that he did not share the video of you going down the hill. >> i took the baby down once. but i can't shoot and hold the baby at the same time. my wife would kill me. >> really all in all this is kind of like a sloppy winter storm, right? >> big time. we talked about the warmer air coming in. we talked about the changeover to sleet across much of the area. we said this would be mostly a sleet event. that's what we saw, upwards of two inches of sleet. that does not happen very often at all. we had that all the way up i-95 toward baltimore and philadelphia and new york. right now we're dealing with more clouds. those clouds actually do have some snow associated with them. temperatures dropping around freezing by 9:00. that's in the city. most of you will be ow

freezing by that time. 36 miles an hour wind gusts in leesburg. d.c. now, 40 miles an hour winds. this is brutal as far as the winds are concerned. once again, the windchill is going to be such a big factor here. we're going to be really cold tonight. our current windchill, 22 gaithersburg, 27 in manassas. a major refreeze. now, normally we have a refreeze and we know what to expect. this is a lot different. lots of melting during the day today because of the ice and sleet. clean off your cars and sidewalks. do it now. you're still able to get out there because it's still fairly soft in most locations. by tomorrow morning it will be a sheet of ice. it's going to be a mess early tomorrow. yes, i do expect some delays. cancellations possibly up where they saw the 6-10 inches of snow back to the west. but we could still see some delays maybe in montgomery county and fairfax county. snow

30 degrees. windy and cold with a few snow showers. 30 would be a record low high temperature, meaning the coldest we've ever been on march 15th for the date. i think we're going to break that record. if we do, that record goes all the way back to 1932. 36 on your thursday, 48 on friday. 47 on saturday, a chance for some shower activity. it may change over to a little bit of a mix early sunday morning. we get back into the 50s. but no 60s or 70s like we saw back in the month of february. our team coverage of this winter storm just getting started here on news4. from what the roads are like in your neighborhood to ways to prepare your home and car for the cold. we're going to be working for you. >> you can always get the latest forecasts sent straight to your phone. download the nbc i

in prince george's county, the falling snow not the only thing causing problems. falling tree limbs really causing a lot of damage. we have prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins who's been out and about surveying is scene all day long and has the very latest. >> reporter: i'm here in queen elizabeth drive. this is the scene behind me. really all throughout this neighborhood here, a lot of trees that are down. so much of a problem here in prince george's county that a lot of those trucks that were supposed to be plowing snow ended up plowing tree limbs instead. let me show you what it looks like around the county. we starts in beltsville, we ended up in district heights. everywhere we went we were seeing broken tree limbs. some damage, most of it minor. but we did see some roads blocked, some off ramps blocked, some cars that had some damage
4:33 pm
we talked to one resident in this neighborhood who explained the damage of this morning this way. >> you actually are seeing the part after the county came and actually plowed this to the side. but this whole street was covered with trees all up and down it. >> reporter: did you hear them fall? >> yeah. we heard boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: a lot of people saying they're looking at damage done to their yards, fences, small damage done to cars as well, call into their insurance companies to see if they can get this stuff covered. county officials are saying this has really been the problem for them. earlier today when we got the wind blowing like it's blow right now, chunks of ice were coming off of these limbs and pelting us for most of the day. things have really dried up. we're going to take a look at how the storm has progressed here in prince george's county a. >> hard t

whiteout behind that st. patrick's day is this friday. we thought maybe we'd celebrate a little bit early. who better to do that than pat collins. he's got his green scarf on. they tell me you've got some special guests. >> reporter: indeed i do. these are the culkin irish dancers. they were in the st. patrick's day parade on sunday. they're going to be at the white house in kennedy center later this week. they're here today to help us kick off the st. patrick's day snow stick challenge. it's amazing what some people have done to try to win an official pat collins snow stick. here's some of the entries we've received so far. we asked people to go out in the snow or the ice or whatever they had outside and give us their

the snowstorm may be behind us now, but don't expect the roads and sidewalkings to be fine by morning. >> the reason, a hard freeze is on our doorstep. it could cause problems for us tonight and tomorrow. first, we do want to head to fairfax county now. >> that's right. the snow moved north and the kids are enjoying their first and quite possibly only snow day of the year. >> mark segraves is there to see it all. he joins us now from mclean. >> reporter: there are a lot of people who didn't have to go to

we looked at roads in fairfax and prince william countys. and we saw the same thing. while the roads were clear, they were also very slick. winter storm stella caused problems for some drivers in northern virginia today. but for the most part, major roads like route 66 were cleared by mid-morning. because of so many closings and delays, the roads were also free of much of the normal traffic. we did find one pileup today, but it wasn't on the roads. you took out about four kids on your way down. >> that was the goal, yes. >> reporter: this is how you expected to spend your tuesday? >> absolutely not. i teach. this is a welcome day off. any time i can sled with my kids, it's a good day. >> reporter: how do you kids feel about a snow day? >> we bought new sleds this year and haven't had a

them. this has been a fantastic opportunity. >> reporter: one is enough. >> one will be enough this year at this point, yes. >> reporter: while families were getting out to enjoy the day off, road crews kept at it throughout the day, getting ready for tomorrow morning's commute. speaking of tomorrow morning's commute, here is the issue. we just saw the sun peek out just a few minutes ago. that snow is melting. take a look at all this runoff going down these roads. that will be the concern for tomorrow morning that all this melting snow and runoff on these roads that have been cleared will freeze and cause a jam up for tomorrow morning's commute. road crews will be out treating these roads throughout. you hate to see that water just running down the road like that. the question is going to be, is it going to be warm enough for the treatment to actually take effect? >> yeah. and the road me

the issue you've been talking about since yesterday. >> it is warm enough to do an irish jig. >> warm enough to get pat con lyn -- collins to do the jig. >> snow lovers are doing their happy dance finally. finally we did get some accumulating snow last night and sleet. now getting a little bit more snow. we can see that on our storm team 4 live tower camera. see those little dark shafts there? that is snow coming down. it's melting as it hits the surface because we do have temperatures above freezing. it is showing up on storm team 4 radar. there it is, that little patch of gray in montgomery county is just about to move into howard county, pulling out of frederick county, maryland, just up near baltimore. it is tracking a little bit to the east-southeast. right in the immediate metro area we will see s

how snow is so devastating but deep freeze can be as devastating for sure. being proactive now can save you a lot of aggravation later on. let's start with your car. there are four essentials that really should be in your trunk if you have to be on the road tonight or tomorrow. rock salt or kitty litter, an ice scraper, windshield wiper fluid and a first aid kit in the event of a crash. start putting salt or kitty litter on your walkway, driveway or stairs now. while we're not having a prolonged freeze, it is still so smart to follow some safety tips. if you're using space heaters to stay warm, keep them away from your curtains or bedding and shut them off before you go to bed. close your crawl spaces and vents now as well.
4:53 pm
from entering into your crawl space where most of your plumbing lines are located. tomorrow would be a great time to actually consider calling your gas or electric company to get an appointment for an energy audit. they're usually free and it is the first step to assess just how much energy your home is consuming. the whole thing about putting an ice scraper in your car, i know that seems like the duh factor. but guess who didn't have one? my daughter. those are the things, they seem kind of like well of course. but if you have them in there now and you think about it now when you don't need them, this is the best time to get them. if you thought the snow we got here was impressive, it is nothing compared to what they are getting up north. we're going to show you what is happening as millions brace for impact.
