>> that's for sure, guys. it will be a major refreeze. we saw so much moisture content with the snow and the sleet that came through. that is why we've seen a little bit in the way of melting during the day, now we're going to see that rephrase. take a look at the snowfall totals. we did a pretty good job. we said back towards the west 6-10 inches. vienna around 3 1/2. and the national zoo coming in at 3.1. just below three inches over toward the airport. most of that sleet and snow mixed in there too. we are tracking snow right on through frederick county. this is making its way towards the area but it's more east than south. so the d.c. area may not get clipped by this boundary but we are going to see

12 hours. really wrapping itself up just off to our east, moving up toward the north and east. a few more snow showers this evening, but the big deal is the cold. we sent tom kierein out to see how cold it is. the winds gusting to 40 already. >> reporter: it's whipping in here. we've had gusts of 30-40 miles an hour out here. you can check all this weather with the new nbc washington app and the upgraded storm team 4 page. feels like temperatures here in tenleytown windchills in the 20s right now. make sure you clear everything off of your car tonight, clear it off your roof as well. because that snow can go flying off your roof when you're up at speed and go flying

behind you. don't forget to shovel your sidewalk before. when this all freezes up tonight, it's going to turn into the consistency of concrete. don't forget, if you opened up the faucets for the outside of your house, the exterior faucets, maybe you washed your car in the last week or so, make sure your turn those faucets off again and drain them, because we're going to have very cold temperatures tonight and staying below freezing here all the way into thursday. so make sure that you do that. otherwise, you could have a burst pipe. that's the way it looks out here on the storm team 4 weather deck. >> we're going to continue to watch this storm system move out. but the colder air, yes, continuing to move in. i'll have more on what you'll wake up to tomorrow morning and when we may see the warmer temperatures. here's a quick look at what you should know about this storm as parts of our region continue to dig out. >> first thing you should know,

so far we have not seen any announcement from opm in terms of government workers for tomorrow, but we have seen anne arundel county schools call for a two-hour delay. page county in virginia also on a two-hour delay. metro access will be back up and running tomorrow. a live look now at reagan national airport where we are seeing some flights in and out right now. so far today we've seen more than 1200 cancellations in and out of our three major airports. that's according to flight aware that shows the worst hit areas, new york city, chicago and boston. and utility crews are working to restore power to,000s in our region. right now, pepco has about 3200 customers without electricity, nearly all of them in prince george's county. bge, 1600.

smeco, 3600. dominion power has about 1200 in northern virginia without power this evening. frederick county, maryland, took the biggest wallop from this winter storm. ten inches of snow fell there. right now folks are still pretty busy cleaning it all up. scott macfarland is live from frederick with a kwlocloser loo. >> reporter: still a bone-chilling wind here in frederick county. you mentioned state route 85. take a look behind me. this is clearly not your afternoon rush. traffic volumes far below what they should be. by tomorrow morning we expect it to pick up significantly. the snow totals are much higher here in frederick. really it might have made things easier for the road crews and for the homeowners who have snow blowers. for the first time in 14 months matt pulled out his snow gear in meyersville and cleared the

street near the elementary school. it took two helpers the afternoon to clear his dad's driveway. >> just a little more slippery than i thought it would be. as you could see our driveway is very sloped. >> reporter: a different problem. a snow removal operator mistakenly smacked down a traffic light, shutting down a busy intersection all day. still so many

woodrow wilson high school. federal workers got a late start today. >> reporter: i think we can all agree it's windy everywhere. there's one good thing about it. we get really nice pictures of the american and d.c. flags with all this wind down here. i have to say it was not the easiest day to be out and about in the nation's capital. emergency vehicles rushed through the city, the roads more clear than many first feared overnight. buses and metro helped carry those making the commute. federal workers on a three-hour delay. how was the commute? >> it was actually good. >> reporter: on the metro? >> yes. >> i came from clinton, maryland. there's a lot of ice on the limbs. >> reporter: how was the commute in? >> the commute was fine because there was nobody on the

>> reporter: the national zoo with its steep walkways was closed for the day. but tourists on spring break lined up for museums that opened at noon. are you surprised by this weather? >> we were prepared. we knew it was going to be this way. >> reporter: is it spring break for you guys? >> it is. >> reporter: why did you pick now? >> you know, that's a good question. if we would have gave it a little more thought, we probably wouldn't have. >> reporter: in southeast like most of the city, main roads were clear, while side roads were a bit more slippery. >> especially on w street the buses wasn't going down. they were still going down the main roads. as the day goes on, i seen a lot of trucks. they've been doing pretty well over here. >> reporter: d.c. schools opened two hours late, just like the city government. but there were no major reported problems except for getting there. >> it was real bad getting to school, wasn't it? our buses weren't running. >> reporter: and there's almost no rush hour inow

the schools will open tomorrow late. we'll know about that later today. northern virginia, the further you travel from i-95 and the closer you come to the blue ridge, the more snow you kasaw. david culver started in fairfax county, trekked across loudoun and now he is live in ashburn. >> reporter: most of the main roads, i can tell you, looking pretty good. looking like this shopping center parking lot here in ashburn. clean, clear, you can see the pavement. but in our driving today we did find some roads that by tomorrow morning could turn tresacherous. >> we actually got this back probably around november and december. and then of course with the weather, it's just been sitting back there. >> reporter: a mild winter

no need for its melting powers. shovels, plenty of those here too. >> we have so much sleds and ice melt and snow shovels because we've had such a mild winter. >> reporter: today they're coming in handy. we drove across the county into hamilton, virginia. we found some gravel back roads looking like this, full of snow and slush. tomorrow they'll be an icy mess. on main roads, vdot's kept them clean and clear. nothing but pavement throughout most of the area. in ashburn farm, neighbors helping neighbors. some finally getting to use their toys. >> this is the first time we've pulled the snow blower out. >> reporter: how's it working? >> it's working great. it's moving that stuff no effort at all. >> reporter: for the kids, this is what really makes a snow day. our go pro went downhill with a few sledders in leesburg. some found a nice

a lot of people stranded today as the airlines forced to cancel thousands of flights. major airports were impacted as the storm moved up the coast. the red circles mean more cancellations and delays. >> reporter: thousands of flights have been cancelled or delayed because of the severe weather up and down the east coast. take a look at the dep

airport. these are the words that people hate to see at the airport, cancelled, cancelled. we have talked to numerous passengers who said their flights were cancelled last night because of this weather. today they've been scrambling to try to get on flights heading to their destinations. >> we got a call on the cell phone last night before we left for the airport. >> reporter: you knew that your flight was cancelled before you got here? >> before i got there, yes. >> reporter: we also ran into a couple of college students here at the airport. they were in washington for spring break. >> we got a call from the aa that we got cancelled because of the weather. so they want to change us to chicago, then chicago to nashville. >> reporter: we talked to one woman from falls church who's trying to go to

okay. hardest working man in show biz. you nailed it, buddy. well done. >> it was such a tough forecast. amelia draper said the rain/snow line would be a big factor. her and i actually on friday had it in our graphics rain/snow line a big change factor here. that's exactly what we saw. that's why we saw those totals with some areas nothing, others with ten inches of snow. this is the easy part of the forecast, though. cold and the wind are really coming in right now. take a look. you notice the cloud cover. notice off in the distance the washington monument, yeah, you see a little bit of sunshine down there. we're trying to get that sun, but that sun is not going to do anything for us over the next couple of days. 39 degrees right now. this will be the warmest

until friday, believe it or not. look at these wind gusts. 31 d.c., 35 gaithersburg, 43 in leesburg. the wind is a major factor as we move on throughout the night tonight. an incredibly cold night tonight. take a look. this is the big deal. by 8:00 we'll be around 31. that's when the refreeze starts. it is going to start quickly. we'll call it a flash freeze almost. the one thing that will keep things a little bit different would be the wind. but again icy spots by 11:00, temperatures around 29. 25 by tomorrow morning in the city. 28 degrees with frigid windchills around 11:00 tomorrow. the refreeze, a big deal. we're still tracking some snow showers. montgomery county, just about the entire

seeing some snow. also howard county, carol county. it's trying to work down into d.c. having a tough time doing it. will skirt across prince george's county, anne arundel and the baltimore area too. here comes the next one coming down. that should be the last one. maybe a couple snow showers, but again northeamost of us are abo. look at these windchills tomorrow morning. 10 in d.c., 5 gaithersburg, 2 in winchester, 7 in manassas. one of the coldest mornings we've seen all winter long. look at the windchill tomorrow afternoon. 12 in gaithersburg and 16 in washington. an incredibly cold day tomorrow. we could see a record low high temperature tomorrow of 30 degrees. the coldest it's ever been during the day on march 15th in d.c. now, we do

thousands of people in charles county are still without power after the storm. we just got word there will be an overnight emergency shelter opening for those who need a warm place to sleep. it's located at the department of community services building. the address is right there on the screen in front of you. in the meantime, the news4's chris gordon drove around the county today checking out the damage from all that ice and snow. >> reporter: well, wendy, people here in charles county have been facing a major inconvenience all day long. this is route 5.

it's a main roadway. it is closed in both directions just behind me. cars have been detoured around about a one mile area, long lines waiting. it's all because of the storm last night. they're trying to allow crews to restore power. last night they didn't have a lot of snow, but they had rain and frigid temperatures and blustery winds. it froze, causing dangerous i.c.e. three utility poles snapped had to be replaced by crews working with smeco. it wasn't the snow that caused this damage. it was the overnight freezing rain that weighed down tree branches, tearing down electric lines. at its height 14,000 customers in charles county lost power. >> we woke up this morning and there was nothing. absolutely nothing. the kids was there. the kids were home, so we couldn't get the kids nothing to eat. we said pu

to eat. >> reporter: power was finally restored. >> i closed the store and stayed inside. that's all. >> reporter: when did the power come back on? >> 11:00. >> reporter: during our drive around southern maryland we saw miles of glistening tree branches encased in ice. some are sagging over electric lines. in accokeek we saw this tree in front of a church split right down the middle, a testament to the force of the ice and wind. we spoke with one motorist whose car was hit by falling ice and then hit again as we interviewed her. >> just a burst of ice just hit the windshield of the car. >> reporter: scare you a little? >> yes. >> reporter: more than a little? >> yes. we just experienced it. >> reporter: just happened again. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: we better move you out of harm's

>> yes, sir. >> reporter: well, the ice is beautiful, but it is dangerous. ahead at 6:00, whether the people here in charles county without power will be facing a cold, dark night as winds pick up and temperatures dive. that's coming up at 6:00. to fairfax county now where road crews have been busy salting and sanding all day long. many folks heeded the advice to stay home. but others had to get out. mark segraves talked to some of those people in mclean today. >> reporter: you're looking at him, jim. we had to get out here today to take a look at the roads. the sun just came out. the wind is still a little bit brisk. take a look at those roads. that's old dominion drive. like many of the major roads, completely clear. look up into the neighborhoods here. these side roads all through fairfax and

midday today. roads were wet and slippery, but passable. in fairfax county, road crews were busy all day, clearing major roads as well as neighborhood roads. this woman braved the icy conditions in her slippers so she could run out for some food. >> reporter: can you ask you about your choice of footwear to come out to do this project here? >> sorry. i didn't know i was going to dig out this much. >> reporter: how come you're not spending the day inside? >> we wanted to get food. >> reporter: while some took to the streets to get their food, others had the food brought to them. >> reporter: delivering pizza on a snow day when everybody's stuck at home? >> busy. it's not bad. tips are tips. >> reporter: are the tips better on a snow day? >> i'm a new guy, so i don't really know that yet.

calling out sick today? >> i did think, but i did not. >> reporter: jim, you know the perfect thing about this melting snow is ice balls. the worst thing about it is that it is going to freeze most likely overnight. that could mean a rough commute. virginia department of transportation is warning drivers if you plan on driving tomorrow, prepare for icy roads. the snow is always nice to look at when you're walking arounds downtown. but this time of year it could spell some bad news for one of our city's most iconic landmarks. the cherry blossoms this morning coated with ice. the national park service tells us temperatures have been warm enough to prevent damage. that could change overnight tonight. storm team 4 says we could see temps in the mid 20s by the tidal basin. about 24 degrees, 90% of

this winter storm not quite done with us yet. it is producing some snow showers passing just north of the metro area now, to be followed by sub-freezing temperatures that are going to last for a couple of days. well, this late season snowstorm may have created a few headaches for people in our region, but it's also brought its own beauty. all day long you've been sending us pictures from across our region, everything from your kids, your pets. mine's on facebook turning snow yellow. waited all season for it. we'd love to see more pics and videos. share them with

instagram using our hand handle @nbcwashington. we may feature them online or right here on the air. today's weather did have an impact. for lawmakers on capitol hill, the house budget committee rescheduled its markup for the republican's health care bill until later this week. today, the white house also had its first response to the analysis released by the nonpartisan congressional budget office. more than 24 million people would be without insurance under this gop plan. press secretary sean spicer had this to say. >> the president's goal is to make insurance available to everybody. if we don't get this through, the goal of repealing obamacare and instituting a system that will be patient centered is going to be unbelievably difficult. >> spicer says despit

i'm shomari stone here in storm team 4 x 4 on a street called celebration way. there is no celebration on this block. no party. why? if you take a look, look at this roadway right here. this is a secondary road in a residential neighborhood. this is slush on this road. people have been operating this street as one lane. you have to be very careful. potentially dangerous for people who live in this neighborhood. chief meteorologist doug kammerer tells me that the temperatures are expected to dip to the 20s. so you see all this slush and snow will freeze overnight. you have to be very careful. right now the maryland department of transportation state highway administration is continuing with winter storm operations throughout the region. more than 1600 state and contract trucks are continuing to treat roads as the temperatures drop later tonight, even treated roads may be icy

so travelers should remain alert and reduce speeds. that's according to sha administrator greg slater. you could come across another road like this one here and you don't see any slush or ice. if you're going to be out, make sure that you're careful. snow blowers and shovels aren't the only tools you're going to need to bounce back from this storm. tracee wilkins has seen the damage across this county. she's in upper marlboro to show you why you need something with more muscle. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. shovels are not going to be enough to deal with the damage we've seen in prince george's county. this is just a small example of the problems we've seen here. tree limbs, branches and in some cases entire trees that have fallen. it st

ice and sleet. it's all heavy and wet and not very fun to shovel. >> reporter: but soon, plows that were supposed to be focused on snow, were more focused on fallen tree limbs and branches. >> you actually are seeing the part after the county came and actually plowed this to the side. but this whole street was covered with trees all up and down it. >> i heard a loud noise, boom. >> i heard it. it just boom. i said, oh my goodness. >> reporter: from the northern part of prince george's county to the southern part of the county -- >> they've just fallen and pop and like you hear them go crack. >> we heard boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: tree limbs and branches were falling left and right with some near miss and some direct hits. >> my husband's truck was parked here and it fell between his truck and the boat

knock on my door and was like you've got trees sitting on top of your car. >> reporter: county officials say fallen trees and limbs have been the biggest problem with this storm that left just 2-4 inches of snow and ice in part of the county. we lost her mike. froze up on us. tom joins us now. boy, you had a wild commute. you were telling me about your drive in from way out. >> i've got a very long driveway. hadn't been plowed. it was mostly sleet. it was like driving on ball bearings. that was an all wheel drive vehicle. it was quite a challenge. and the icing we had in southern maryland, that was the one thing that most forecasters missed yesterday. did not see that coming. we thought temperatures w

would be mostly rain there. unfortunately that was an incredible event, unforecasted unfortunately. look there at prince george's county's camera. it's bouncing around in a gusty wind right there at national harbor. you can see the waves on the potomac getting kicked up by winds gusting around 30 miles an hour. sky looks dark to the north. that's where we've had some snow showers passing. they are continuing to come on through just to our north. wear your warmest winter coat, a warm hat, gloves and even your sunglasses. we have some sun out now in parts of the region. we'll have some tomorrow too. here are snow showers passing just to our nourth there across montgomery county. this is tracking off to the south and east and continuing to pull away from the immediate metro area. that's probably going to be the last one from this storm. it's not quite done with us yet.

it's spinning away here over southern and central new england. it came just close enough to us to bring that warm air in and change that snow over to sleet throughout much of the region. here are our feels-like temperatures right now with the winds gusting around 30 miles an hour. it feels like january, not march. feels-like temperatures are sub-freezing. the current temperatures are now getting down to near freezing. we're starting to see a freeze-up already in frederick and good faithe er ersbur er ee faithersburg the sleet and snow is now freezing right back up there. by contrast fredericksburg is at 43. reagan national 49. those temperatures hour by hour are going to continue to drop. all the way down to near 20 degrees predawn. this is for most of the rural areas. right there at the t

for the cherry blossoms, it may get down to the mid 20s and damage those blossoms again. tomorrow it's only going to be in the upper 20s to just near 30 degrees. that is colder than the average high we get at all during the entire winter during the day on winds. winds gusting 30-40 miles an hour tomorrow. windchills, single digits throughout much of the day on wednesday. then wednesday night, right back down into the low 20s throughout much of the region. maybe mid and upper 30s. then right back down below freezing wednesday night. then finally climbing back up to near the average high on friday in the upper 40s. then above average high on saturday. maybe into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees. then on sunday, getting gusty winds. temperatures back down chilly again into the mid 40s. a little bit milder monday. tuesday maybe right back up around 50

we've seen snow and ice across our region this morning and last night. but the conditions to our north are far worse. from pennsylvania to new england, some people are dealing with flooding as others try to dig out. >> reporter: i'm drew smith in ocean city along the jersey shore where powerful winds mixed with heavy rainfall have led to flooded streets. in atlantic city there have been several high water rescues as drivers have gone right into these flood waters. now that the rain has moved away, that's one good thing, but the high winds have remained. and along with that, the threat for power outages. >>

connecticut where strong winds and heavy snow are wreaking havoc. you're looking at a tree toppled over onto power lines, bringing those power lines down. roads in the area of greenwich are blocked off here as these crews get to work. >> reporter: i'm in allentown, pennsylvania. ten-plus inches already on the ground here. officials are asking people here to stay off of the roads. the plow crews barely able to get into neighborhood streets. some of the highways are looking okay, but with this much snow the cleanup is going to last for a while. folks in this part of pennsylvania actually happy to see these flakes falling. ski season was almost a bust. now up in the pocono mountains they're getting a lot of snow here at the end of winter. news4 begins now with storm team 4. now at 6:00, the cleanup
