several inches of sleet and snow across our area. the worst is over. but the big concern tonight is refreezing on the roadways. >> here's a look at the storm by the numbers. 120 million people impacted in eight states along the east coast coast. more than 6,000 flights grounded nationwide. and thousands still in the dark after this powerful nor'easter. all the major school districts with the exception of d.c. schools closed today. just moments ago prince william county schools announced they will close tomorrow. we have a team of reporters in virginia, maryland and the district showing you what it looks like now and what you can expect to see when you head to work in the morning. >> taking a look at how we did with the storm, we're still seeing snow showers and now it's all about the cold temperatures. we came on last night and told you who would see what as far as snow is concerned. ke

frederick at 10 inches, martinsburg at eight inches. up to three inches of snow around the d.c. metro area. national zoo coming in around 3. 3-6 from vienna to the west. a lot of sleet mixed in here. that was expected. the one area i'd like to take back, southern maryland did not get hit with the sleet and snow. it was freezing rain down here. that's why we saw a lot of problems down there that was not forecast nearly as well as it could have been. now, still dealing with some snow showers. that's all moving out of the region. behind it, very cold air, some of the coldest air we've seen since a similar storm like this. remember the super storm of 1993? that one brought record cold. this one could bring record cold as well tomorrow. >

virginia are trying to clear out the snow before that hard freeze overnight. time is running out for you. bureau reporter david culver has been looking at the spots that could pose a challenge for drivers tomorrow morning. he's live from ashburn in loudoun county. >> reporter: i can tell you right now doug mentioned that cold breeze. we're feeling that right now. that could certainly factor into some of the wet roads we found. we tracked across northern virginia, here in fairfax county, loudoun county working for you to get you an idea what conditions look like. come with us down sands road in loudoun county. the gravel stretch covered in snow, about to turn to ice. st what doesn't drain will turn into a slick sheet. streets in herndon quickly cleared. sidewalks, not so much. instead folks making the dangerous walk on the streets. if

pedestrians, that could cause problems for some students. some using this day off wisely, clearing their own driveways and helping their neighbors dig out. some welcoming this first taste of winter in march. do you miss the snow? >> i kind of do. this is already. >> reporter: then back to spring, right? >> yeah, right. >> reporter: kids using the day off to burn energy, friendly snowball fights. >> you like squeeze it and it turns into a ball. >> reporter: is it working pretty well? >> yeah. >> reporter: our go pro went downhill with a few sledders in leesburg. some found a nice smooth finish. others not quite. but still having a good time. >> that was so good. >> reporter: they're having a good time today. the question is whether that will continue tomorrow with another day off. many of you may look around and see pavement just like this, clear c

what you have to realize is that when it comes to counties like fairfax, even loudoun, there's a lot of variety from the west to the east portions of those places. when it comes to calling off school, they have to look at everything from school bus lots to the roads of course, also the sidewalks, another problem. howard county and culpepper counties on a two-history delay. if you have the nbc washington app, you already know that. frederick, maryland, got some of the highest snow totals in our area, at least ten inches up there. you can see the accumulation in this neighborhood. scott macfarland spent the day in frederick and joins us now. >> reporter: such a busy day for the snowplows here in frederick county, jim. the snow piles are much higher. this was the light powdery sno

a storm for sledding. a storm for snow blowers. a storm of snow men and some slick spots. a traditional snowstorm in frederick county. matt kiper was excited to break out his gear for the first time this year. >> it took overnight to get the snow blower working. it took a lot of warmup but it did a good job. >> reporter: some snow covered state roads near thurmont but most of the mess was on top of the cars and the driveways. >> it's been easy this winter. this snow isn't that bad. it's light. it's pretty fluffy. >> reporter: an uglier scene south in gaithersburg where a snow removal truck operator mistakenly knocked down a traffic light. in the montgomery county highway services war room they monitored 400 crews grappling with the slushier precipitation. >> one of the plow gets offer

but it still leaves an icy film on the road that requires additional salting. >> reporter: here's a live look at state route 85. this is nothing like the normal rush hour through frederick county. big decisions for frederick and montgomery county schools tomorrow because of that refreeze. both districts telling us they will likely make their announcements tomorrow morning about the status of schools. live tonight, scott macfarland, news4. wendy, back to you. speaking of snow days, most counties had a snow day today, but the district schools along with the federal government decided to open late. tom sherwood is continuing our team coverage at freedom plaza downtown with the city side of the story. >> reporter: let me show you, wendy, right here on 14th street heading to virginia, it's pretty light, very little traffic tonight. it's normally backed up all the way down to constitution and over the bridge. it's been that kind of a

here. some kids in d.c. got up on the hill in northwest for fun. while others trudged off to schools on a two-hour delay. d.c. schools chancellor antwan wilson says city schools open if at all possible for academics, food services for needy students and because so many parents work. what about tomorrow with an icy morning expected? >> we want to coordinate with the city. we'll be making a decision tomorrow as soon as we have all the information in. i would encourage families to do what they feel is right for their children. if they learn that we are pope tomorrow, we'll be ready to serve them. >> reporter: traffic in downtown was light, trucks and buses pretty much double parked like they do on any days. this worker brought her snap-on shoe spikes. did you have to use them? . i did a little bit in my

neighborhood. >> reporter: federal workers had a three-hour delay to get to work. did you take advantage of the three-hour delay? >> of course. especially when the weather is nasty. >> reporter: not too bad now. >> of course. >> reporter: all around town, people pretty much coping with the cold, wet and windy day. and the city will decide either late tonight or early tomorrow morning about schools. vance, before i throw it back to you, this is the benefit of working downtown. look at the sun on the capitol dome down there. these are the pretty pictures that tourists take all day. >> and a picture well worth the taking, tom. this is an absolutely gorgeous city, snow or no. crews are making progress restoring power to those in the dark. 3600 smeco customers are still without power. that's down from 14,000 this

morning. 1,000 dominion customers still need service restored. and about 500 pepco customers are still without power. almost all of the outages are in prince george's county, which has been a problem spot for them all day. some roads look great. some not so much. we sent shomari stone out in the storm team 4 x 4 to take a look. >> reporter: right now we're in a residential neighborhood. i must tell you take a look. there is slush and what appears to be i.c.ce beginning to form e on this street. some people in this neighborhood obviously concerned. now it's worth mentioning that as temperatures drop tonight, even treated roads may be icing and slippery. so people need to be careful, be alert, reduce your speed. worth mentioning that if uh you do find yourself caught in some ice, make sure that you go slow. you can recover faster that way. if you do

always the best move. most vehicles have anti-lock breaks. instead keep your feet off the pedals and your hands on the wheel. that is coming from montgomery county police officer who is a defensive driving technique expert. again, make sure that you be very careful out here, because the slushy roads could freeze tonight. temperatures are expected to dip in the 20s. so just be careful. live here in tomorrow team 4 x 4 i'm shomari stone. let's look at the impact this storm had in other parts of the northeast. a travel ban on the state roads in connecticut expired an hour ago. violators were subject to a fine. most people stayed off the roads. massachusetts, more than 50,000 customers without power. boston schools closed today and they will be closed again tomorrow. schools were closed in

subway lines that are normally underground, the ones aboveground for closed. some people decided to take their skis out into central park. nearly 3300 flights were cancelled in the new york city area today. hundreds of passengers stranded at the airports. the storm caused problems in pennsylvania. you don't have to have a foot of snow on the ground to have buses, cars and trucks sliding around or getting stuck. the storm was a wintery mix when it hit philly. but the poconos got slammed with almost two feet of snow. >> for which the ski resorts are most grateful. much more coverage online. we invite you to use the nbc washington app. please do that during the break to see what the snow totals are in your neighborhood if you don't already know. next, the health care fight

this late winter/early spring storm has created all kinds of problems for people trying to fly tonight. thousands of flights were cancelled and delayed today. darcy spencer has the latest from national airport. >> reporter: cancelled, that's the word you don't want to see or hear when you're planning on flying. but that's what a lot of people are dealing with after the severe weather up and down the east coast. thousands of flights cancelled or delayed. we've been talking to passengers here at reagan national airport about what they're doing with these flight delays and cancellations. we talked to one family trying to get to orlando for a conference and vacation. they decided to drive from providence here to reagan national airport to make sure they made it to florida. >> we

hours to orlando. >> reporter: we spoke to a lot of people today. but i have to say probably the worst case was a woman trying to get back to pittsburgh. she didn't find out that her flight was cancelled last night. she was already on the plane waiting to take off. >> all of a sudden the pilot had to say, i'm so sorry, ladies and gentlemen, because the flight crew, the hours are up. we have to go back to the gate. as we got to the gate, he came back on and said, i'm so sorry to inform you, your plane has been cancelled. >> reporter: airlines are still trying to make up for all those delays and cancellations, trying to rebook everyone's flight. if you're flying today or tomorrow, you want to make sure you call ahead. metro rai is operating on a saturday schedule tonight. but

metro buses will start tomorrow morning on a moderate snow service plan. they'll upgrade service as road conditions allow. metro access service, which was cancelled today, will be running again tomorrow. from the rails to roads, crews spending the day clearing those roads and sidewalks and the national mall. we told you yesterday about president trump's oval office meeting with metro's general manager and d.c. mayor muriel bowser. pat collins asked the mayor about that meeting. >> reporter: did you get a paperwork or souvenir? >> no. we talked about d.c. and metro, how we can have great relationships. >> reporte he wants to make sure that if our city needs anything, that we have the right contacts. >> reporter: nice

do we have that video? here it is. look at this. this is awesome. they got upwards of nine inches of snow. it's still snowing up there right now. they may get a foot before it's all said and done. temperatures today up there right now sitting at 12 degrees. but not all that far away from us back towards snowshoe, west virginia. the ski resorts really having a good time with this snow. this whole thing moves on out. the ski resorts of the poconos, two feet of snow. mt. pocono reporting two feet of snow today. that system moving out. for us, it's on the cold side for sure. 38 degrees right now. temperatures 36 at 7:00. dropping to 29 by 11:00. we're going to see that refreeze pretty quick. notice the wind

44. look at this, this just came in, 49 miles an hour wind gusts in leesburg, 44 in washington. we could see power outages because of the wind tonight. that's a big factor. combine that with the cold temperatures, look at the windchills. already 16 in leesburg, 17 in gaithersburg. 26 in d.c. we get a refreeze a lot with systems, but this time, this is going to be a major refreeze around the area because of automatic moisture with this storm. >> yeah. and the consistency of it with that sort of wet snow and sleet that turned into slush this afternoon. it's already starting to freeze up just to our north. it's going to turn to the consistency of concrete once it freezes up. many cars are looking like this. i took this picture earlier this afternoon. make sure you get your car cleaned off now before the freeze arrives and shovel your sidewalk. don't forget your exterior faucets, make sure you have that turned off and drain

i turned mine onto wash my car last week and forgot to do that. i did do that this morning. the refreeze starts in the metro area by 8:00 p.m. by 11:00 back down to the upper 20s. icy spots through the night for the morning commute as well. we'll stay below freezing all day tomorrow. >> we really will. if you're going to be out and about on the roads, take a look at this. this is going to be the road impacts for the day tomorrow. expect delays to the north. down to the south and east, including i-95, slick side roads. most of the main roads should be okay. the cars providing enough wind that we're seeing some drying in those locations. but to the north and west we expect delays on most roads. this is the best chance for school closings or delays. we've already got a couple out there, including

have power. most of them live in prince george's county. smeco is working to restore power to about 3500 customers. nearly 1600 dominion customers in northern virginia are still without power. we're going to begin with chris gordon. >> reporter: i'm standing next to route 5, leonard town road. this has been a major headache. a major inconvenience for people in charles county because it is closed in both directions for about a mile so work crews can try to restore power. crews are working to replace three utility poles that snapped overnight. the freezing temperatures coated tree branches with ice. they weighed on power lines, tearing down electrical wires and cables. at its height, some 14,000

lost power. smeco is hoping that a refreeze tonight and high winds don't cause more outages. customers without power are bracing for another cold night. >> i won't be able to do the things i've got to do. i've got to get ready for work tomorrow. i can't do that. no hot water for the shower. >> reporter: during our drive around southern maryland we saw miles of glistening tree branches encased in ice. some are sagging over electrical lines. in accokeek we saw this tree in front of a church split right down the middle. icy branches brought down power lines throughout the day. >> a big boom and there was a flash through the window twice. >> reporter: smeco is expecting temperatures in the 20s and wind gusts of up to 30 miles an hour tonight. that could tear down even more lines. smeco is bringing in additional crews to work all night, trying to

are you worried about having power tonight? >> yes. that's our only source of heat. >> reporter: what will you do? >> probably go get a room. that's probably the logical thing to do. >> reporter: well, charles county is offering an alternative, opening an emergency shelter in the department of community services building on port tobacco road. now, they will not be offering ma meals or showers, but they are pet friendly to the degree that you can bring your cat or dog or pet and they have a separate place to accommodate your pet there. smeco hopes to have full power restored tomorrow. and our team coverage continues with bureau chief tracee wilkins live in upper marlboro where a lot of trees

>> reporter: first of all, prince george's county county schools will be on a two-hour they f delay for tomorrow. the branches were much more of an issue than the snow. >> seemed like it's more so just i.c.e. an ice and sleet. it's all heavy and wet and not very fun to shovel. >> reporter: in most of prince george's county, shoveling fallen snow took a back seat to clearing out fallen tree limbs and branches. some of the icy debris found its way on top of power lines, causing outagineoutages. soon plows sent to deal with the snow were also on falling branch duty. >> you actually are seeing the part after the county came and plowed this to the side. but this whole street was covered with just trees all up and down it. >> i heard a loud noise. boom. >> i heard it. boom. i said, oh my goodness. >> reporter:

county -- >> i mean they just falling and pop and you hear them go crack. >> we heard boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: tree limbs and branches were falling left and right with some near misses and some direct hits. >> my husband's truck was parked here and it fell between his truck and the boat. >> my next door neighbor came to knock on my door and was like you've got trees sitting on top of your car. >> reporter: we also saw limbs blocking roads and off ramps. it's the official snow stick challenge. it's under way. our viewers did not disappoint.

apple. >> reporter: yeah, we've seen a few skiers out here today. a few people walking the dog, but very quickly. finally a little break in the snow. we hear it's going to continue, though, for the next few hours here. we haven't seen quite as much snow as forecasts thought we might here. the city is really just a big mess right now. the snow started overnight, the thick blanket covering an area from the mid atlantic through the eastern seaboard. as the white flakes at times mixed with ice continues to pelt the region, daybreak came with a warning from police. >> i advise people to stay home. don't come out unless it's an emergency. >> reporter: the slick conditions have made it nearly impossible to get around. this car spinning its tires. this snowplow spinning out of control. crews are trying to clear away

but in many areas they've been unable to keep pace with the storm. >> we've seen the snowfall pick up. most places are seeing somewhere between 2-4 inches per hour. >> reporter: places like albany and worcester taking the brunt of mother nature's attack. while in manhattan -- >> the storm in the new york city area is not as bad as anticipated. >> reporter: but it's not good either. the city will see about eight inches of snow, half of what was expected. still, things are a mess here. snow and ice has pushed people off the normally packed streets and sidewalks. airports across the region are empty too. more than 6,000 flights have been cancel. the rough conditions leaving millions with a choice. >> it's either a nightmare or a lot of fun. >> reporter: perspective, perhaps the best tool for dealing with this arctic blast. with this littlebr

if your car was not in a garage overnight, you may have had to chisel it out of the snow and ice and this morning. mark segraves talked to some people in northern virginia who got their workouts in with the shovel. >> reporter: winter storm stella didn't dump as much snow as she could have. the icy conditions she left behind made things difficult for some, like these women in manassas whose car got snowed in by a plow. are you having some trouble with the ice? >> a little bit. this is hard. >> i have to go to work later so i had to dig out my car. >> reporter: luckily their neighbor had the day off and was able to lend a helping hand. >> we're on the partly cloulow .

it's a pain. >> reporter: it's all we're getting this year. >> yep. >> reporter: are you working today? >> i'm not working today. i'm a government contractor so i'm off today. i thought we were in the clear. it's almost april so this is a surprise. but it's kind of fun to get snowed in. >> reporter: road crews were out in force in prince william and fairfax county. this man was gassing up his suv. but he told us with the possibility of an overnight freeze, he won't be driving to work tomorrow. >> it's a good day to try to use public transportation, walk if you can. >> reporter: while many of you spent today having fun in the snow or just staying warm and out of the snow, the focus now turns to tomorrow morning, particularly the rush hour and what these roads behind me will look like. officials say they want you to be mindful there could be a freeze-over. so take it easy
