from parking lots and situations like this as we continue to make our way through what has been an extremely cold day. it's only getting colder out here. look at the conditions we found earlier actually in parking lots. this was in gauithersburg with the windchill was 1 degree earlier today and it was slip and sliding all over with the black ice. now we talked to some people who say, winter made an appearance but they want to see more. >> it's about time, we need a little more snow. >> reporter: more snow? you want ood storm? >> of course. >> reporter: i don't think it's happening. >> you didn't think this one was going to happen either. >> reporter: he's right about that. we didn't know this it was going a late season storm but it snuck up on us and we're diealing wit the dig out today. cars having to do a little work to get out of the

continue to send us pictures of what you're seeing @nbcwashington. back to you. >> we're all waiting for this cold blast to end and for spring to finally arrive. justin finch is live in frederick county, maryland where all of that snow we just had is now frozen on the streets and sidewalks. justin, are you seeing melting out there? >> reporter: we're not melting just yet. perhaps you can see in the sky we have flakes flowing in front of our faces right here. despite winter almost being over, we're still reeling from its effects. we have this piled up, packed heavy icy snow here just almost everywhere here in frederick. they got hit with a nice dose of snow here yesterday and sleet as well but the streets are looking clear out here. at this point we're just dealing with cold and it is very bitter out here. we saw 19 degrees at one point this

the feels like being about 4 to 9 degrees at certain points this morning as well, the wind blowing at points at 15 miles per hour because of those conditions, it's building right here, the frederick rescue mission opened the doors as it does all winter to welcome those who need a warm place to stay and conditions like this. inside, they serve all kinds of people. they also provide a place to sleep and keep warm. meals, hot drinks, et cetera. then after that they come back outside and go about their day. i can tell you as someone who has been out here all morning long, what you want to do first before coming outside assess your layers. you want your scarf, coat, hat, gloves, long everything underneath. when the wind blows through it is bitter and cold and will rally your bones. we're all out here today counting down until when spring finally gets here but winter as you can see here just is not letting up. we're live in frederick, i'm justin finch, news 4, bac

you. >> a warning this morning if you do plan to use your fireplace for heat. montgomery county fire officials believe a fire started in the chimney of this home last night. temperatures were the 20s when crews were call out on blue meadow road. no one was hurt but five people had to find another place to stay. good morning, i'm erika gonzales at the live desk. we're expecting to hear from the justice department and handful of indictments on those accused of carrying out the hack attacks on yahoo!. this goes back to 013 and 2014, two separate incidents when in all more than a billion accounts were compromised. the justice department's top official on national security says the hacking to be discussed at today's news conference was quote, done with the backing of a nation state. we understand the accused men live in russia and canada. more on this story as it breaks. back over t

eagle cam. it has a crack and could hatch at any minute now. mr. president and first lady braved elements to protect their eggs. the eggs are supposed to hatch later this month but now that we see the crack we're going to continue to check on them. we'll try to bring that video for you. >> it is tradition for so many of our families going to see the world famous cherry blossoms along the tidal basin. this year we may not see them hit peak bloom. here's more on the reason why. >> a spokes person for the national park service says they are seeing evidence of damage to the cherry blossom trees here along the tidal basin. if you look here, a lot of the damage is affected the trees and already begun to bloom and blossom and have the pink petals. they are especially vulnerable and the magic number,

and opportunity to go and see, it's also a teachable moment. can you tell us about the history of the taiko drums. >> they have been around for a very long time. they've been used in religious ceremonies or folklor e, but we use it as a performance, this kind of performing arts style has been around for i would say something like 50 or 60 years. it's relatively new but we like to bring this cultural and kind of -- we like experimenting with new things and bring it on the stage. >> you have to be in shape to do this. >> yes. >> when you talk about it, just being relatively new in the sense it's decades old, you seem to have constantly be evolving. there's a new show. tell me about that. >> this show is going to be an all male cast, 14 performers and the concept o

drumming men. it translates to men drumming so it's going to be an all percussion show. there are going to be no -- we usually use melodic instruments like the bamboo flute but that won't be involved. men hitting drums for the whole show, masculine and athletic. >> everybody wanted to play the drums, think it was so easy, so fun. also, stress relieving. but what are the tricks there? it's not a matter of guesting up and hitting drums, a little technique. what's the siecret? >> if you think of drums, you think of it as just having one sound like boom or -- how much kind of soul and feeling how much information you can pack into one strike of the drum and

stages, puffy white blooms. what they are going to do now, they are going to take -- trim off a little branches and look at those blooms that are in the earlier stages to determine how much damage there is in those if any. they had said that they were expecting march 19th to the 2 2nd, starting this weekend would be the peak bloom date for the blossoms. they still have that date in place but the concern is with the frigid temperatures, specifically 24 to 27 degrees, which is what we had today and certainly what we had last night, that is a concern for continued damage to these cherry blossoms, a story we'll all be closely monitoring. >> we want to take you back to the live look at the eagle cam. it's at the metropolitan police department. earlier we said it was national arboretum, that's a different eagle cam. the eagle egg has a crack in it and could hatch at me minute. the parents are liberty and

temperature around 30 for a high but the winds will be gusting. it will make it feel about the low 20s, blustery with a few spasing snow showers or flurries and tonight in the 20s but with the wind it will feel like the teens tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon still breezy but sunny and highs in the upper 30s, friday in the upper 40s, we're slowly rising into the weekend. to start your weekend we're going to be closer to 60 degrees, chance of rain showers saturday. upper 40s on sunday. at least not at fridge it and in the next ten days we don't have the frigid weather coming back like today. next week will mostly be in the 40s and 50s, not too bad right now. >> we're busy eating. >> how good are you at reading a teleprompter? you might have to finish the show. >> thanks so much. >> it's so good. >> it's delicious. >> thanks for joining us, we're back on the air this afternoob, first at 4:00. >> get your weather up
