today. >> it's raining outside. >> i wish i would have brought -- i will say i got a lot of sunshine in florida but we didn't have any rain and now we're back and there's some rain this morning but that's okay. it was a nice weekend and we're dealing with a few sprinkles but for the most part they're really out of the area so i don't think it will be a big deal at all. the rain is mostly south of fredericksburg or now east of annapolis. so it's quickly moving away and clearing the area. as far as the commute this morning expect some damp roads by 7:00 a.m. temperatures around 47 degrees so it's mild. by lunchtime close to 60. by the afternoon, dry roads, low to mid-60s, but colder air moves in tomorrow morning. let's check that with chuck. good morning. >> that's right. enjoy the relatively mild air for today because another shot of seriously cold air is coming our way as we get toward tomorrow night and thursday afternoon and thursday morning. could be the coldest of it. so for tomorrow,

beltway, going 66 miles per hour. it's going to take you 11 minutes so you're good there. same thing outbound. no big worries through that area either. taking a look here bottom of the beltway, charles county rolling along nicely. see you back here in ten minutes. >> thank you. it's 5:02. developing this morning we're told the delays on the red line are over following a fight on a train. you can see metro transit police investigating at the rhode island avenue station last night. two passengers had some kind of fight and one had to be taken to the hospital. that person should be okay. the red line was single tracking, but now it's back to normal. also this morning police in northern virginia are trying to track down dozens of stolen guns that can now be on the streets. >> we're learning two of the men arrested for allegedly stealing the weapons in a series of burglaries are also suspected in a d.c. burglary. over the weekend police arrested three men for burglarizing t

they used surveillance video to connect all the crime. this same white u-haul van showed up in all three surveillance tapes. atf agents tracked down the van, followed the men and arrested them. >> we're impressed that in only a week's timeframe they have the people that broke into our store. every indication that we'd gotten from the atf they feel they'll be able to recover the fire arms stolen. >> matthew jones and daniel quarrels. at the time of the burglaries they were already out on bond for a burglary at a cvs store. they are expected to appear in court today on those charges. in northern virginia a popular principal may soon be reinstated. john brewer was given a termination notice in december. this also stems from brewer writing a recommendation for a former band instructor who was accused of inappropriate conduct. parents, students and teachers

reinstatement. last night the school board upheld his firing but also decided to offer his old job back on a probationary basis. he'd have to agree on special training on child abuse and neglect reporting among other conditions. he has ten days to decide whether to accept those terms. >> and president trump expected to capitol hill today. this all comes as gop leaders are proposing changes to sweeten the deal. it requires most medicaid recipients to work and it delays action on baby boomers who could see premiums jump 700%. also on capitol hill, it is day two of judge neil gorsuch's confirmation hearing for the supreme court. today begins the question and answer portions of the hearing. if confirmed he would replace the late supreme court justice

some well known characters, kids and parents are expected to rally on the hill today. they want congress to reject the budget proposal eliminating federal funding of pbs and npr. they also plan to deliver a petition with 660,000 signatures to the senate. a yesterday maryland congressman and other lawmakers met with the head of the secret service about security incidents. in the past two weeks there have been three scares. in one a man managed to jump the fence and wander around the grounds for 20 minutes before officers took him into custody. >> some of the things that we heard today are very alarming. the response was pathetic at best. and it's almost -- it's just downright embarrassing to watch it. >> the news 4 iteam reports that plans for an

fence will not be changed based on these recent breaches. let's head over to the live desk with some dramatic video of a plane crash. >> take a look at that. look at what happened when a plane crash landed. it's a smoky scene there. this is at an airport in south sudan in a town called wow and that's because all 43 passengers, six crew members, they survived this. 37 of them had to go to the hospital. most though discharged. that accident blamed on poor visibility that led to the plane colliding with a fire truck during the landing. in a town called wow. back to you, adam. >> certainly. thank you. today the department of homeland security is expected to announce new temporary restrictions on overseas flights to the united states. take a look here. the new rules will restrict certain electronic devices from being carried on board. the restrictions only apply to foreign carriers from certain countries. they do not apply to u.s. based airlines or domestic

an advisory saying nonmedical electronics now have to be stowed in checked baggage. don't be alarmed if you hear tornado warnings in virginia this morning. it is only an annual emergency drill. the alerts will go off at 9:45 this morning and will appear on local tv, radio and cable cha e channels. emergency officials have an outline of what you should do to participate as a family. search tornado in the nbc washington app. all right. i really don't want to be the bearer of bad news but apparently a freeze is on the way. let's talk about the warmup first though. >> temperatures in the 30s tomorrow morning, eun so it will be a bit of a shock to the system but today the going to be mild. you see the rain on the radar. it's moving out so you don't need your umbrella today even though we're showing you a little bit of rain that already moved through. it's going to be a mild day but

the cold weather is causing a big loss for local fruit farmers. >> the swings in temperatures have farmers worried about their spring crops of peaches and cherries. some of their crops got confused. they bloomed too early. for some farmers the impact is costing them tens of thousands of dollars. >> the early varieties were actually in flower like the cherry blossoms were downtown and they got blasted. >> local farmers say apple and strawberry crops are holding up well but some fruit varieties may be harder to find. >> you know what it means, we'll end up paying more at the store. >> we're still on a roller coaster. we're going up and down. >> the deep freeze went all the way into the deep south as well. i tweeted this out yesterday. the peach crop down across parts of south carolina could suffer as much as

>> thank you, melissa. we know you're working hard. a look at some other top stories we are following across the country. a candle light vigil will be held tonight for the emt who was killed by her own ambulance. a car jacker took off in the ambulance hitting her as he fled. look at this massive fire in an apartment building in kansas. the good news, no one was live ng that building. the fire did spread to some nearby homes. 17 other homes were destroid but no one was hurt. the house fires are under control but the apartment fire is still burning. this morning we're learning a tennessee teacher who was allowed to stay in the classroom after he was accused of kissing a student is now missing with that same 15-year-old girl. elizabeth thomas' parents say they were not told that another student reported seeing their daughter kissing

cummins. the two have now been missing for more than a week. police have charged cummins with kidnapping and other charges. well, you see in the video and now we're hearing from the woman who made that daring escape from her kidnapper. >> she was captured on video jumping from the trunk of her own car. look at that. the alabama nursing student was kidnapped at gun point and forced to drive around. she said the suspect tried to get cash with her atm card and threatened to kill her multiple times. eventually he locked her in the trunk. that's when she found an unusual item to get out. >> i used my insulin pump light. i popped the trunk, popped the latch and i tried to put it in the back of my head so i can just, you know, like, get through the day. >> most trunks have a latch right there for you to get out. she ran into a gas station for help. the suspect is still on the run. she's trying to move on with her life. she's moving from the home where she was

>> that's really quick thinking. billionaire philanthropist david rockefeller has died. he was 101 years old. rockefeller was the guardian of his family's fortune and the head of their network of family interests. one of his accomplishments was pushing the project that led to the world trade center. and news for your health, fewer babies are dying in our area according to the cdc. mortality rates fell to less than 20% in our area. sudden infant death syndrome had the largest decline of all infant deaths. ask to have your blood pressure taken in both arms and not just one. substantial differences in the readings between arms could signal a blockage or an abnormality. doctors suggest a reading on both arms every couple of years. never done

there's bad guys trying to take your money pretending they're from the dc courts. they lee a voice mail on your phone. it asked you to call a 1-844 number and make a payment. even looks like it's from the courthouse on your caller id. dc court says it will never ask for money over the phone. if you receive one of these calls, do not respond. there's some great reasons to go to baseball obviously, such a great family sport, but the food. i mean, you go to the ballpark for the food. right sf. >> hot dog, beer, whatever. >> we'll get to the nationals in just a second but first here's a reason to visit arizona. usa today putting together a list of the craziest ballpark foods and the chicken funnel cake sandwich was the top. i would love to eat something like that. >> together with the chicken? >> but it has strawberry jam, maple syrup with it. spam grilled cheese sandch

mid-60s and then look at tomorrow morning. look what happens. we're back in the 30s. some areas could be in the low 30s so make sure you dress accordingly early tomorrow morning. as far as that temperature trend goes, we go into the 40s for a high wednesday and thursday, but then we do warm back up as we go into friday with a few morning sprinkles. look at the start of your weekend. this is not the half of the weekend with rain. saturday looks good. chuck will have the ten-day forecast. we'll take a look at sunday, but let's check the roads on this tuesday morning. >> so right now eastbound braddock, still have that crash there in the right lane. we are going to see some slowdowns because of that. so hopefully folks can continue to get around that on the left side of the roadway. north king's highway at route 1, a reminder we still have that crash hanging around as well. the beltway, inner loop and outer loop looking quite good but outbound suitland parkway, a broken down vehicle in the center lane and that one just popped

>> reporter: good morning, guys. montgomery county is not mincing words when it comes to their feelings on this proposed budget. they'll be meeting to introduce a resolution that in their words condemns the proposed budget. they say residents would be hurt by it. nearly 48,000 residents here work for the federal government as well as depend on many programs that face severe cuts. meanwhile concern is also growing for metro. they say they could lose federal funding just when they need it the most. tim kaine was in town riding the metro yesterday. here's what he had to say. >> it's really difficult to govern a system if you don't have a certain investment and that's something that metro struggles with. we ought to provide them more certainty. >> reporter: so a lot of concerns around the region. more coming up at 6:30. we're live in rockville. back in to you. >> thank you very much. meanwhile the final changes to the republican replacement to

the affordable care act were released late last night. we'll check in be tracie potts for more and what it means for your family in just a few minutes. three men are now behind bars accused of burglarizing three gun stores in three days. they were arrested over the weekend. police used surveillance video to connect the crimes. the same white u-haul van showed up in all three surveillance videos. that van led atf agents to the suspects. two of the men were arrested and they were out on bond for a burglary at a cvs store on massachusetts avenue northwest. they're expected to appear in court today on those charges. the man baltimore police called public enemy number one has turned himself in. two people died after antonio wright threw malatov cocktails into a home on saturday morning. one of the victim's mothers said she didn't know that her son had died in the fire until she saw it on

including murder and arsons. before his arrest he recorded a facebook video in which he claims he is not the man responsible. heroin, cocaine, guns, cash off the streets of northern virginia and maryland after a massive drug bust. these are ten of the 11 suspects who have been arrested. a series of overdoses led to a year long investigation. the attorney general says he hasn't tied the suspects to any deaths but the investigation is still open. meanwhile a tennessee man who caused a scare inside the u.s. capitol visitor's center is going to spend close to a year in prison. a judge sentenced larry dayson to 11 months for the confrontation. he aimed what officers thought was a gun at them at a security check point. when he refused to drop it the officer shot him. >> we now know who the terps are going to play in the sweet 16. the women's basketball team will likely

sudan, a town called wow. poor visibility is being blamed. the plane actually crashed into a fire truck. can't even see the fire truck in that video. back to you. well, new details on that deadly house explosion in rockville. an autopsy revealed the man whose body was found inside the ruins shot and killed himself before the blast. authorities say the 61-year-old also killed his dog. still unclear what triggered the explosion early friday morning. ten nearby homes were also damaged and we've learned that the home was illegally hooked up to a gas service since last december. an update now to an ongoing push to find dozens of missing teenagers in our area. we told you about the social media push to bring them home last week. now we've added an interactive map that shows where the teens were last seen and information about case. there is a common theme that many are young black

present with the kids. he tackled the young man that stabbed the young man and was able to get security out right away to arrest the young man. >> today the principal is expected to speak to students about the incident. the victim is expected to be okay. montgomery county executive says if convicted, one or both of the rockville high school students accused of raping a 14-year-old classmate will be deported after serving their sentences. he says this is consistent with the county's long standing policies. the victim says 17-year-old jose mo monotano took turns sexually assaulting her. detainers are issued on individuals arrested on local criminal charges and who could be deported. there is no information on the 17-year-old. a popular loudoun county principal who was fired may soon be back on the job. john brewer was forced out of

house fence won't be changed based on these recent breaches. president trump was back on the road to sell the republican plan to replace the affordable care act. he pushed the bill to supporters in kentucky and today he's going to make the case to house republicans. >> tracie potts live on the hill for us this morning. gop leaders have unveiled some changes to the plan. how could this impact families? >> well, low income families especially. if you're on medicaid you're probably going to have to work to get those benefits. that's something that conservatives are rejoicing now that has been built into the changes of this bill that's going to be voted on thursday. there are some exceptions for pregnant women, disabled medicaid recipients and people taking care of a child under six. other wise that work component is going to be in there. also for families, if you're paying any fees under obamacare, those would end this year not next year so that could put more money in your pocket. the thing that's still up in the air are the baby boomers who

increase up to 700%. the number, the cost of this plan still aren't complete. they've got to rescore it now because of these changes so the house doesn't really want to touch that. they punted it to the senate to deal with about whether or not they're going to offer tax credits for those baby boomer to try to offset these escalating costs of premiums. >> and the other big story is fbi james comey's testimony to the intelligence committee yesterday. what were some of the headlines and how is the white house reacting to all this? >> so two big headlines. he said there's absolutely no proof or evidence within the fbi or within the justice department that president obama tapped president trump's phones. and that was a big blow although the white house response to that is well, they're still looking into other types of surveillance. the other thing is he came public and said they are investigating ties between russians trying to influence our election and people associated with the trump campaign and

obviously this winter that never really happened. we do have a freeze threat coming up once again between now and the weekend. cloudy skies, temperatures are in the 40s. and not a problem at all. tomorrow morning noticeably colder. freeze is not all that likely especially in and around the city and down by the tidal basin but windchills tomorrow morning will be back down in the 20s. burr. and then as we get to thursday morning, a hard freeze likely everywhere. even downtown temperatures by the tidal basin as low as 27 degrees and could be the cherry trees could have to endure four to six hours at least of below freezing temperatures. i was down there yesterday and the blossoms are trying their best to come back out. this could be real trouble for some of the blossoms. by the weekend though, whatever's left should be getting ready to come into peak bloom. a little bit of light rain and sprinkles during the overnight hours. that's all basically come to an end at
